visited 10 of us . haven't been for years. After reading reviews was worried about going. It was an absolute delight. Staff were friendly happy and made us feel very welcome. Food was amazing come out quick. staff gave us the right size plates told us how much we would need and wasn't stingy just sensible. its very light now and clean since its got rid of the red upstairs. no complaints... please dont read peoples crap reviews. Had 2 kids that wont eat chinese still let them sit and eat a sunway as long as they didn't touch food... perfect evening xxx

We love The Great Wall. We can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. It’s a great all you can eat buffet. When you order it comes out piping hot and very quickly. They all work so hard, and the staff and restaurant owner are extremely attentive, and provide excellent service. If you want more starters you only have to ask. Don’t let the negative reviews put you off, the food is very very good!

We have just returned from another visit to this really good Chinese Restaurant. We have been many times and have never been disappointed. When we arrived today we found fresh decorations, the overall impression light and airy with white tablecloths and freshly covered chairs. The staff are welcoming and friendly and we had a window table. The service was excellent with drinks and food orders taken and delivered in short time. The starters were hot and delicious and as soon as we needed more they arrived again hot and fresh. We then ordered our main courses which also arrived in really good time considering the restaurant was very busy. It’s always a pleasure to eat in the Great Wall and we look to many more visits in the future. .

Was very disappointed , we've been coming here for years & have always had delicious food & service. We walked in on a Saturday night to a very quiet restaurant, never seen it so empty! The food was very average, portions were very small, I know u can keep ordering but not what we've been used to here. Lemon chicken was awful. Crispy duck wasn't usual standard. It was all edible but not good. Won't be rushing back anytime soon. Shame it's gone downhill after all these years.

The meal was great with very hard working staff who couldn't be more attentive. I was shocked however to learn they don't get to keep the tips and it goes to the owners. When you are paid the minimum wage that really doesn't seem fair

Used to love this place and really enjoy the food- but it has definitely gone down hill and probably would not ever go again now. Staff take ages to take orders and when the food does arrives the portions are ridiculous. I can’t even say we got a rib each it was more 1/4 each and then having to wait 10 mins to re order. Yes we understand it’s all you can eat but waiting so long between being able to order we actually just gave up in the end so didn’t bother with mains. It feels like this this is the plan by staff- take ages and then give the most ridiculous portions.

We went on a Saturday night for the 8.15 p.m "sitting" . The only option seemed to be the buffet menu. On Saturday is £23.99 a head. The place was packed. Service is quick and efficient. The food..... well I dont think its value for money. By the time you have read all the rules, for ordering the buffet, your certainly ready for the food. The portions are very small, if you order chicken sate, you get one each, garlic mushrooms you got 1 mushroom cut in half. Order sweet and sour chicken you get 1 chicken ball each. For mains I ordered lemon chicken. I was shocked when it came. See pictures below. I complained and was given another 3 slices. True you can order as much as you like , but portions are tiny , so you have to! The Great Wall, used to be a great place to go years ago, but nothings changed, not the windows full of condensation or the decor. What has changed is the quality of the food, and the extortionate prices. I wont go again.

Have heard fantastic things about this place for years, and so finally decided to take then plunge. The first thing you notice is the decor. Its authentic, but VERY dated and looks alot like it hasn't changed much since the 80s. Also, there was a certain grubbiness to the place, that should have sent alarm bells ringing. That said, you can't judge a book by its cover. The view is spectacular and the prices for the 'all you can eat' not unreasonable. Unfortunately the view was the highlight of the experience. A lukewarm beer accompanied the mix selection of starters we ordered and all of it was underwhelming and to be honest more befitting of a low standard takeaway delivery. We persevered and if this had been a traditional style restaurant meal (not an all you can eat for £18) I'd have complained. Dishes were either bland, overcooked, borderline undercooked or and I'll be frank, just poor quality. We left within 45minutes and were then the suffers of bad stomach and diarrhoea after which lasted most of the night. We are no strangers to Indian, Thai, Chinese cuisine so it was Definately not a case of weak stomach. I/we won't be returning!

I was extremely surprised when I walked on off the street on a Thursday night, to find every cover taken or booked, as there was only two of us the lady did find us a table, It seemed that it was only an eat all you could menu, so we ordered duck and pancakes to start, it was ok, no as good as a quarter or duck cooked to order. And the starters was ok, the chicken satay skewers were only warm they were also tiny, not even a mouthful of chicken and you only got two per portion and only two tiny squares of prawn toast! We ordered mains the shedded chilli beef was such a small portion I actually laughed, and just three prawn in the prawn curry…. I get it that if people ordered to much , there would be too much waste but it felt more like a taster menu than anything else, I get full very quickly if I wait too long between courses and than is probably a good thing so I don’t get greedy, but as much as the food was ok, and the staff were friendly, it wasn’t for me, but can a packed out restaurant on a Thursday be bad? I think give it a go for yourself !

Our table was directly under the air conditioner which was very cold , the waitress said she would turn if down but she didn't , the crispy duck was cold and had a very odd texture , we were alarmed at the amount of files in this restaurant which makes you question hygiene , the food was very poor we will not be returning

Starters were poor quality. Not all dishes ordered arrived. Crispy duck was like boiled pork. Disjointed service - we ordered 3 portions of rice between 5 people for main course. Only one small bowl turned up. Enough rice for one. We ordered more, but had finished majority of the meal before any more rice delivered. Staff uninterested in resolving issues. Ordered another beer, it was so long coming it arrived with the bill! Portions were all small, and poor quality. Shall not be returning.

Three of us arrived at 1850 without booking. The restaurant was full but we were made welcome on the basis that we would just have a main course and leave by 2000. Just what we wanted and their positive approach meant that they sold three more covers. The restaurant is on the first floor with good views across Portsmouth harbour. Service was good and attentive, the food hot and well cooked and the prices reasonable. I was particularly glad to see that all the staff were continuing to wear masks. Not a “memorable or outstanding “ meal, so 4 stars not 5, but we would return again. Recommended.

Wow, first time in Portsmouth on holiday and we decided to stay in Southsea. However, after searching the internet, we saw this great Chinese across the harbour. But the ferry (which was great as from the countryside we don’t see water) was quick and the restaurant is worth it. The food, service, all you can eat and drinks were delicious. And it’s all fresh. Our server Amy was attentive, with a great sense of humour and recommended some great dishes. 16 quid all you can eat on a Sunday to Thursday, 19 on Friday and Saturday. You will not be disappointed!

Had the all you can eat buffet - although cooked to order - found the menu fairly standard, but the food was nice, the service quick at first, but understandably got slower as the restaurant got busier. Average drinks list, beer wine and soft drinks (extra charge). Booking might be worth considering as it does get busy - a window table is recommended, as there is a great view across to Portsmouth.

Good food, nice and hot. Good selection of all the usual Chinese favourites. No problems with ordering more. Staff friendly.

I cannot praise this restaurant enough. The promptness of service, the quality of the food, the value for money. The portions aren't skimped out on at all, not even the duck which I often thought I'd been given too much by accident!They really are the very best in Gosport and Fareham combined. I say this with total confidence as I have dined at nearly every single place in the area.My only disappointment is they don't deliver. Collection or eat-in only. Mind you, if they did start delivering my wallet would be in serious trouble....!

THE best Chinese all you can eat restaurant ever. Great food, hospitality and atmosphere. All waiter service so you don't even need to leave the comfort of your seat! This place never disappoints. Thanks again all of you x

Always try to visit this place when working in the area,we just turn up without making a booking and always get a table.Food is well cooked and service is fast,Go for the all you can eat menu,very good value.Would recommend,but can get busy.On our last visit we were asked to move tables during our meal,not a problem for us at all,and were given a couple of free beers for our trouble.

Been here a few times. Great location. Fab views of the harbour from the tables. 6pm & 8pm sittings for reservations. Eat as much as you want buffet. SMALL portions so double up. Booze is limited in choice and not cheap. Food ok... Enjoy the experience rather than go for the menu.

just been in for a meal iam coeliac so getting chinese food is quite hard but toning the staff really looked after me even went out of there way and cooke me sweet and sour prawns fantastic it does get busy so worth booking in advance the food is great and the staff are also very good and you can have laugh with them

I went with a large group of people, split into two ordering groups but main meal portion size so small I curry was just sauce etc... sad to write this review because I enjoyed my previous visits.

At here with my family on a Saturday night. Eat a much as you like for £19. Even if the food was good quality this would have been expensive. The starters were adequate, however the mains were positively disgusting. The fried rice was obviously microwaved, the chicken plastic. Really not impressed, we will not revisit, which is a shame as the view is nice. Avoid.

Went here with my family to celebrate a work milestone and we left very disappointed after the first course, having paid the full price for 3 courses 'all you can eat'.

Don't be put off by the look of the place from outside - you have to go through a door between 2 fish & chip shops and upstairs but the food and the service more than makes up for this. The all you can eat menu is great value and was probably some of the best Chinese food we have ever had. The service was very friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. We went on a Friday night and it was busy but this did not affect the service at all and the food we ordered always came out promptly. We were sat in the window so had views across the water.

We had dinner here and chose the place because it looked busy. In fact we had to wait a few minutes for a table.

A really nice Chinese restaurant Great food very friendly staff. Had a table by the large windows a great view of the Spinnaker tower and you can watch the ferries come and go. Food is great as well. Will return.

Not been here before so went with an open mind as it was all you can eat buffet night . Couldnt fault it , polite , attentive staff , great choice available , not huge portions but well presented , tasty and hot and filling , lemon sorbet not available for grandma but server went and found an alternative for her. Will be going again

Booked a table at the last moment because we had something to celebrate. Table for 5 was booked for 8pm On arrival and until leaving everything was rushed and we felt constantly pestered. Could understand if the restaurant was busy but there was only one other table in use. Food was ok but because we were being rushed didn’t enjoy as much as other people who have done reviews. Had we have been given more time we might have been able to enjoy our celebrations. Not somewhere I’d recommend.

We love this restaurant. Great staff, fantastic menu and a lovely setting with a view of Portsmouth from across the harbour. We always leave feeling stuffed and happy.

We are regulars and have never had a bad meal. Great views over harbour. Staff very attentive. They have standard menu or eat as much as you like for set price. Only drawback steep staircase up from pavement not good for elderly or disabled folk.

We visited the area to go to the Southampton boat show, had an evening meal at the Great Wall and it was great, all you can eat but served at the table fresh and hot rather than help yourself style. The staff were friendly and did a great job waiting on table. Portions were modest in size which was great as it meant you could try a greater variety. Open a franchise in northumberland as the only criticism was the 6 hr journey to get there!! Hope to visit again one day!

I really enjoy Chinese food but I absolutely love this restaurant & wish we didn’t live at the other end of the country! I haven’t had a dish I didn’t like yet & I much prefer the table service style of buffet to the helpmyourself kind. Went to the Great Wall for a friends birthday on a Saturday evening. Had eaten there before, a few years ago and couldn't believe the improvements. Staff were friendly, providing advice on ordering. The food was lovely and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Everyone left saying how much they enjoyed things.

This has always been our go-to restaurant for family celebrations, with the children/grandparents. Love sitting in the window seats overlooking the harbour. We had made a reservation but were greeted by an insistent waitress who made sure we understand we had to rush our meal and vacate the table on time. The food was served almost immediately and was shrivelled and unappealing. The chicken used in all the dishes was obviously processed, the texture was sponge-like and flavourless. Most dishes had way too much MSG and were gloopy. We have never returned food in this restaurant but on this occasion even our family "Dustbin" said he wouldn't touch some of the dishes. The Chicken and Cashew contained two cashew nuts, the Chicken in Creamy Pepper Sauce was bland, even our favourite Smoked Chicken was chewy. We felt quite cheated... and we were there for a double birthday too so felt awkward about complaining because we didn't want to spoil the evening. What a shame.

All you can eat, delicious food. Probably worth booking ahead to ensure you don't miss out. My only complaint is when the people I'm with want to leave when I'm still eying up 7 more plates of szechuan chicken some satay skewers and some salt and pepper wings. Basically go with someone with a big appetite and you'll have a great time.

Staff were very attentive & couldn't be faulted at all, but as for the food from the set menus , it was ok & that's About it really.

Me and my boyfriend visited this evening, they were so busy with bookings but managed to squeeze us in (will definitely book next time ).This place was so good I had to write a review straight away. Food came out so quickly, very hot and such good quality!! We had lots of dishes we hadn’t tried before and loved all of them. Staff were very very friendly and welcoming :) we wouldn’t go anywhere else for a Chinese again. So worth the money !!!

What a great all you can eat. I've been here so many times and I always come back happily. The service is always really friendly and the food comes out really quickly but still all tastes amazing! They don't give you more than you can manage so as not to waste food but are more than happy to bring you more if you need it! At £15 per adult during the week, it's fantastic value too

Although staff sometime grumpy, this place always delivers good grub. We tried the new place in Fareham but always come back here.

For the price you pay, the food is good and the service lovely. The appetisers are really the best, make sure you order all the want before ordering mains as you can’t go back once you’re on the next course. Lovely view over the harbour.

I was staying in Portsmouth and had to meat a friend at the ferry, this is the first restaurant you see when you get of so we gave it a try, I had the scallops which were not very good but then to get rushed out as soon as we were finished, not good.

i was here for a quiet meal but the place was far from relaxing, they hoover round and as soon as a bowl or plate is empty its gone.. i felt rushed and very uncomfortable. the food was poor too. i did not enjoy my meal as the meat was tough and the curry not tasty. i give up with this place.. and its not cheap so expect far better.. and who ever runs it is a control freak making staff hoover like that.. very stressful and off putting..

As long as you don't go at the weekend when there is a surcharge then this is a place that offers acceptable value for money. Decent surroundings and attentive efficient staff make for a very pleasant experience. Typical Chinese menu offers something for everyone. Duck particularly recommended.

Our friends were staying with us to celebrate an upcoming 21st birthday and a 24th birthday. We all like Chinese so booked the great wall on Friday evening.

Great food with lovely friendly staff..........being a Saturday night very busy!!! Set amount of money for the meal but eat as much as you want!!! Food was delicious and being brought to share or individually you can try so many different dishes and then reorder your favourites again! We all had a greatest evening definitely a place we will visit again.........highly recommended would like to try during the week when hopefully won't be as busy

It's an average restaurant. The staff are friendly enough, but didn't seem to communicate with each other and so kept being asked the same questions over again. The food was nice enough, but we felt that we were being rushed all the time. Can't say I would jump at going back.

This restaurant has a nice outlook and the proprietors are very friendly. I like the buffet arrangement where they just keep bringing dishes out as you request. Duck especially good. Menu choice is not as wide as some places, but tasty and served swiftly. I have been a few times now and the quality is consistent.

Used to be great but food is awful now. Crispy beef is just crisp and no beef. Chicken is slimy and not real. Beef was raw and was not beef. Not sure what it was.I complained and they refused to reduce the Bill and were quite unpleasant about it. Finally they agreed to knock £5 off. Finally I got 10 off after I threatened to walk out leaving a small fee and my name and address.Worst Chinese slop I've ever tasted.

Quite expensive considering it's not all you can eat including the desserts. You never get that elsewhere normally desserts are included! They make you eat within 2 hours and they will charge you if you leave a considerate amount of waste. Not the best quality food either - waiting around for food and they try to tell you to order starters before mains even if you want main first! It's better when you can get up and choose from a Buffett. The portions are pretty small and waited ages for the bill! Going to my local co-op on the way home for some chocolate!

Service was slow and poor. Forgot to bring out dishes that were ordered and needed to ask for them several times. Had to ask 4 different times for the bill and then to ask several more times to pay. Not even the spring rolls could save my disappointment, as good as they were.

visited this restaurant was very pleased with the whole caboodle. very pleasant staff, attentive and polite. this was a buffet with a difference as you still ordered the food. so you could have as many starters as you liked and main meals etc. the food was brilliant, good quality cooked fresh and served at the table. excellent service, even poured your drinks for you. couldn't fault it and will be visiting again next weekend with more customers.

First visit, the interior could do with an upgrade. The food was decent and portion sizes were good for an all you can eat. This isnt the typical serve yourself buffet, you take your seat and the food is prepared fresh and brought to you. Friendly and polite staff

I just wanted a quick bite before retiring to rest, I ordered the Hot and Sour soup that I must have eaten in hundreds of Chinese restaurants around the world. It was small inportion size and the chilli was almost undetectable.For a main I had Chciken inspring onions and ginger. Nothing wrong with the onions and ginger but the chicken was insipid. It may not have had soya or be reconstitutedchicken but it sure tasted like it.

Haven't been for a couple of years but used to love it. The chicken satay was to die for with a dish of tasty satay sauce with chicken kebabs in it, and the BBQ beef ribs were melt in the mouth. This time the chicken satay was very dry with a measly drizzle of satay sauce on top. The BBQ sauce wasn't as it used to be, quite tasteless and the ribs which used to be melt in the mouth now had to be chewed to get them off the bone. The beef in the beef curry was weirdly soft and the chicken chow mien was mainly a pile of chow mien which went cold very quickly and very little chicken. The staff were as lovely and friendly as ever but it did begin to get annoying to find a waiter hovering behind us every few minutes to see if they could clear away a plate. I'm sure they just want to table to look nice for us but it does get annoying. Nice meal on the whole but not as good as it used to be.

We called in on our way back home from an evening out, we hadn't booked but called in on the off chance we could get a table. Staff were very accommodating, we were seated within minutes. The restaurant was very busy but our food was with us quickly and hot. We tried several dishes as it's eat as much as you like, all were very nice. We would visit again.

Came here with my friend last night and even though the food is good, I counted 21 visits from waitresses checking if we hadFinished eating in the hour we were there! And by checking I mean coming up to the table, stopping next To it, looking and then walking away... before a couple of minutes later another waiter or waitress doing the same thing! During the starter course, two plates were taken away Unfinished with food still on (despite less than 1 min before telling another member of staff we weren't finished!). Taking out the rushed, intrusive customer service, the food is good. A lot of the sauces taste the same (kung po chicken and crispy chilli beef was the same). I wouldn't say this was the place for a date, as you'd spend more time talking to the staff telling them "I haven't finished yet" than talking to your date. But a lot ofBig tables were in so I guess the service works better for large groups!
