Grannie Annies in Sunderland

Great place to watch the sea the views are fab right on the beach. Food was lovely , staff very pleasant. Dogs were having fun too, there were plenty of dogs in there.

Staff and service eis superb. They are super dog friendly. But unfortunately the food was pathetic, I couldn't eat more than 2 bites, taste wasn't good at all.

We visit here regularly as it as Excellent service, good atmosphere, reasonably priced food and dog friendly....

Paninis are good. They have good beer. The vibe is okay.

Myself and my wife had a stroll about 2 miles to try this place, We both decided to have the fish and chips, The meal was brought to our table where instantly I could smell the fish being a chef myself I know the smell of bad fish and this was putrid, But gave it the benefit of the doubt and cut into the fish and smell of ammonia was overwhelming even the smell of the vinegar was drowned out, The fish itself was mushy but the smell, Any person taking that out of a fridge would have smelt that or they were just incompetent at their job, Absolute disgrace, The staff gave a refund and we left and will not be going back there is no need for off fish when the sea is literally 10 meters away and places to get fresh fish daily locally just a stones throw away up the road

Went for breakfast and coffee - apart from I couldn’t get a coffee because they have zero milk alternatives, I’m not a vegan or doing it to be awkward literally can not have cow milk or I’ll go into anaphylaxis, the bar staff didn’t seem to care less lol. Breakfast was nice enough when it finally arrived but I don’t think we’d rush back here any time soon. It’s a shame as it’s seems a nice eatery and in a lovely location.

Wow. Just Wow. Beer was amazing Food amazing. Right on the beach. You can roll a stone there never mind a stones throw away.

We’ve visited this pub for many years , walking the dog along the front then finishing off there for Sunday Dinner . We haven’t visited in over a year , however called in yesterday and ordered two Roast Beef Sunday lunches . I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get a table , as in the past we’ve had a long wait due to the popularity. When the food arrived , it was clearly evident why the place was half empty . The lunch was truly awful . It was cold , the meat was extremely fatty . The vegetables had been soaking in a huge pan of water , that was clearly transferred to the plate during preparation . The dinner was soaked in the most opaque gravy ( lacked flavour and substance ) . My husband asked for HP sauce ( which indicates how bad the food was ) just to add some flavour . I left 3/4 of my plate the other 1/4 was offered to the dog . The young serving staff didn’t enquire as why our dinners were hardly touched . It’s so sad , as this was once a thriving business in a prime location . The food was excellent as were the staff . I don’t know if it’s changed proprietors but I’m afraid that we won’t be back and won’t be recommending it to friends / family

First time visitors at Roker, stopping in an apartment near the Roker Hotel. Went looking for a breakfast and we found Grannie Annies and we were not disappointed at all. The surroundings are excellent very clean and tidy. The service from walking through the door was very friendly and very welcoming by the staff. Wide range of drinks and meals on the menus along with chef specials. All very reasonable priced. The breakfast was cooked just right and the coffee is superb. The overall experience was brilliant and would certainly return to try a lunch etc. You won’t be disappointed if you call into Grannie Annies.

Very quirky place ,good music .

Only went in for a coffee and it was great. Menu looks really good and we were considering going back for a lunch later in the week. This might not happen as we witnessed dogs not only sitting on the seats, but also with front paws on tables and then one even given food on the table. This was done within two metres of members of staff.

As a regular visitor to Grannie Annie’s I have to say I love everything about the place apart from the ever increasing prices it isn’t so much the food that is fine and always nice but I have to mention the price of the drinks we had a pint of Carling shandy and a medium glass of red wine and it came to &9.20 now I understand prices have gone up but personally I think that is extortionate I know smaller places can’t compete with weatherspoons but it costs &4.89 for a medium red wine and a pint of lager and you can get a bottle of wine for &10.99 that is a huge difference and one that will drive customers away from grannie Annie’s we won’t be returning it is far too expensive for a drink granted it is a fantastic setting with great food and excellent staff that isn’t the issue it simply comes down to finances if you want to go out for a few drinks weatherspoons will win every time I hope the management look at this honest review and do something about it so we can return one day if not well that’s it for us unfortunately

Been for breakfast twice now. Both times were fantastic. The food is amazing and very reasonably priced. Service is friendly and fast. The whole place is very clean even with them being dog friendly. Still brilliant!

Always been nice when I've been

Popped in for lunch while visiting family In Sunderland. The lady that served us lacked customer service skills and the girl that cleaned our table lacked any training with regards to effective cleaning. Food took over 40 mins and when is arrived it was luke warm. There are better place to eat further along the coast in Roker.

Lovely pub , music brilliant, shame there was only about 10 people there to enjoy it !

Quirky place, friendly staff, prices are reasonable, only problem I had was the very large aquarium set in the wall which gave off an odour if you were seated in the vicinity of it, moved seats and problems solved.

My daughter and I had a breakfast burrito each and struggled to finish them, they were huge. It's always fairly busy and I love that it's dog friendly.

Great, lively pub. The food is nice and the atmosphere is homely. It gets a bit noisy when busy, especially since dogs are allowed but all the better, adds to the charm.

I visited here with a couple friends we didn't know what to expect or if it would have options for me since I am a vegetarian (no meat or fish). Their prices were pretty good I ordered a goats cheese tart which was a perfect size chips were very good. We ordered a desserts in a meal getting a biscuit sundae waited a little while for it to arrive but was tasty. The decorations are unique with a lot to look at.

Love this place during g my dog walk but new bar staff not so good. Very polite etc but don't engage with customers except for serving. People waiting for service can be left waiting as they carry on with completing any other cleaning or bar tidying. Used to be more friendly and welcoming, my dog loved getting some attention but new staff not interested.

Service is only so so. Sunday Lunch Terrible. Yorkshire Puds Burnt and the rest, cold food . We as a family will not return for any meal not just Sunday Lunch . Must say there is plenty of variety regarding a good pint or a spirit . Staff are friendly though

We popped in for a drink, what a great place to sit and watch the waves. Friendly atmosphere, we didn't eat but the food looked awesome. Dog friendly. We wanted to go back but it was closed. Never mind, we'll make a visit next time we are in the area.

To our shame and disappointment this was the first time we've been. We've just taken ownership of a dog and now rediscovering parts of Sunderland. Great place in a great location. This is now one of our destination eateries.

This is a nice place. Unfortunately, the service is incredibly slow. The food was OK when it finally arrived. Staff are friendly, and the pub is relatively clean. It's also pretty cheap. They just need to speed up a bit. You shouldn't wait 45 minutes for a microwaved jacket potato.

We visited here as a family, on Sunday 20/08/23, after taking our dog for a walk down the beach. Myself, partner and children we’re absolutely starving, so we decided to order Sunday Lunch and the kids had chicken nuggets. It’s came in a very timely manner, however, unfortunately to say all 4 meals we’re absolutely awful. Myself and partner ate 70% of ours, due to how hungry we were and because we wouldn’t be able to get anything else to eat for several hours. The kids however refused. We told our daughter that she had to eat something and she begrudgingly ate 1.5 of her nuggets. At this point me and partner tried them and we understood why should didn’t want to eat. The batter that surrounded the chicken was not cooked and seemed soggy in the middle. Our youngest son, at this point just would not eat anything at all. I approached the bar and asked for the Manager, to which is was pointed in his direction. In fairness, once I was with the Manager, I did state “that was the worst dinner I had ever had”, which i probably could if handled better, however I was upset that we had spent nearly £50 on an meal (including a couple of drinks) and it was awful. The Manager responded with “I’ve done loads of these today, with no complaints”. I explained the dinners we’re absolutely tasteless and the kids meals we’re absolutely awful. The Manager went over to the bar area and all the staff were looking and sniggering at us. My partner hates anything remotely like this, so kept telling me about it. The Manager came and collect the plates and in a rude manner said “well for someone who didn’t like the food (relating to children’s meals) has made a good go of it”. There was 4 nuggets. We made her ate 1.5 and had half each to clarify how disgusting they were. Our daughter hadn’t touched the chips or beans and our son had ate absolutely nothing. Back to the bar the Manager went and more sniggering and black looks we got. Finally, the Manager came with card reader and offer to refund the children’s meals. To clarify, I wasn’t expecting a refund for our dinners, as we begrudgingly ate them (reason mentioned above), but what upset us, was the attitude of the staff. Mangers lead by example, so if his attitude is bad, then I suppose staffs will be too. Because of this we would never return - customer service and food is - 1 from us :-(

Have not been here for a while but as we had our dog with us we called in late morning. Our food was varied and most products were on the well cooked side. My fish and chips were awful to look at and tasted odd. The wedge like chips looked and tasted like reheated and the fish was in some soggy mustard coloured coating. Not sure it was meant to be battered or crumbed. Not at all as our previous visit last year.

Place is so relaxed and friendly, nice big portions of tasty food and really good value for money. We had cod bites which were very tasty and my partner had steak which he couldn't fault. They do proper home made chips which I love. Highly recommended

Tried here for the first time. Great seafront location. Felt like the service on bar on this particular location wasnt brilliant as the barman was a little irritable the way he asked whether we were taking drinks inside or outside... Other than this the visit went smoothly and would return as it is a great bar to visit on a hot summers day .

Unfortunately after writing a great review last year, this year the food was bad. I had the Rump steak which was cold as well as the chips ( they did put it in microwave). The wife had mince and dumpling which was luke warm. So we're not happy

Ordered fish and chips which looked awful and tasted awful. Chips were dark brown . I have been Ill since eating them . Service wasn’t good at all . Shame as we have noticed a decline in this restaurant lately . I will think twice about returning unless it’s just for coffee.

Attended a private function in the upstairs bar area. Great venue, lovely food (catered buffet) and excellent service from the staff. One lady in particular very friendly and helpful. Didn't catch her name but Irish lady with dark hair. Would recommend.

Went in today about midday and ordered some food. Went back 45 mins later to ask where my food was. There was a notice up, saying food orders were subject to an hour delay. If I'd been advised at the time of ordering there was a delay, I'd have went elsewhere. It took 1hr 30 for my food to come, which was luke warm, average at best & certainly not worthy of an hour and a half wait....and the staff didn't even offer an apology for the waiting time. Not impressed. First and last visit 😡

Ended up having to walk out as our table wasn’t seen to after 20 minutes even for a drink order. Man that was ‘serving’ us or at least that had seated us was so laid back floating about chatting to other men that were drinking...

Clearly short staffed on our mid afternoon visit. Dirty tables left uncleared even though it was easy to get a table. Ordered food that was only average at best. The place was invaded by flies which put us off today. Doubt we'd go back.

Visited with friends with our 3 month baby and 2 year old , breakfast burritos was lush and reasonably priced could really shared it with my partner as it was massive , sat upstairs as no room downstairs, some staff were friendly others clearly didn’t...

Love this place so much. Its right on the beach front. The food is very nice and staff all lovely. You can sit downstairs if you take your dogs in to eat. The staff will bring you water over for the dogs and make a fuss of them. Alwasy had good experience here
