Stopped here to get water for our boat and saw this very cute boat cafe. Hubby is a sucker for scones so we promptly bought two and a flapjack to eat later . The scones were I think £1.70 each which is a lot for a takeaway scone but that would have been fine if they’d been freshly made which they clearly were not as they were stale. My flapjack was changed to a caramel flapjack which I didn’t see til took it out of the bag much later. It wasn’t home made and had nuts all over it so I can’t eat it!

The signs promised home made cakes, and the wooden blocks on the table said which cakes they still had left. You can’t see much as the window is too small to display a lot, though I impulse bought some sausage rolls I could see because they looked so nice. There was no mention that several of the options were actually individually plastic wrapped, shop bought items. Unfortunately I only opened the bag they had been placed in before purchase when we had travelled 10 miles down the canal - and discovered that some of the home made treats I bought to share were nothing of the sort. The sausage rolls turned out to be inedible because the puff pastry tasted as if it had been made from out of date lard - with a horribly stale greasy texture. So they were thrown away after just one bite into each. The pieces of ‘real’ cake were nice - but had the person serving told me the rest were shop bought I would have changed the selection completely, as I don’t buy food wrapped in plastic and stuffed with preservatives to increase its shelf life. Everything I saw other people getting (bacon etc.) looked good though, so I think my message has to be - don’t rely on being told which cake is not home made before buying, and eat all purchases nearby in case of problems.

We arranged a collection of a scone treat box during our canal boat day out on Friday, 25/9 and it was definately a treat! The scones were freshly baked (still warm) and the box included 4 large scones (2 cheese/2 plain) plus generous portions of butter, jam and cream. The box was well packaged and presented beautifully, tied with a lovely blue ribbon. These were the best scones we have ever had (and we have tried many...!) Both the cheese and plain jam and cream scones were amazing! The quality of the jam (raspberry) was also amazing too, and by far the best jam we have tasted! The scone treat box made our day even more special and we would thoroughly recommend! Great value for money and we can't wait to visit again!

Was very happy to find that Gongoozlers was still operating albeit with only a takeaway service at the moment. That's not a problem for us as we always take our dog so have to sit in the adjacent garden which has some benches. Everybody was social distancing and wipes and sanitiser were on hand. The food, sausage sarnie with scallops for me and bacon and cheese baguette with those tasty scallops for my wife, was excellent and so tasty. The two young members of staff that I saw were very helpful and provided a good service. Finished off our visit with a walk along the canal. Great way to spend some time.

We visited here before returning home after a narrow boat holiday on 1/11/19. We had four lovely breakfasts including a little vegetarian bits and bobs one for our 8 year old! Nothing was too much trouble for the ladies who work here. They offered a fun treasure type hunt where you fill in answers to questions about the village whilst taking a walk. It was 50p for our daughter to take part. The walk was lovely, we learnt loads and saw what a beautiful area it was and what lovely history it offered. Afterwards she received a goody bag with pencils, sweets and a postcard... I’m sure it’s value was far more than what we paid for the actual treasure hunt but as it was out of season I suppose it was offered as a kind gesture rather than a standard holiday activity. We had had a fantastic holiday and visiting here for breakfast before our walk and return home, it made it the perfect end to the week. The narrow boat seats people two per table. It has narrow steps to navigate onto the boat and may not be overly accessible to anybody with physical disabilities but there’s plenty of outside seating on a grassy area by the canal. It was a wet day when we visited and we had our dog, we sat outside and were given bags to cover any wet seats with. Despite us choosing to sit quite far away from the boat on the grass, the lady serving us was happy to be coming and going to make sure we had everything. We have booked another narrow boat holiday for Easter and so will definitely be coming here again then.

Where do I start! Me and the wife decided on a early valentines walk along the canal. We have heard village roumours of a cafe actually on river boat or barge, but never came across it during our long dog walks and just assumed it was some sort of urban legend or just daventry old women gossip.....but during a walk on the canals around braunston with the sun shining we turned the corner and found this little shinning gem on the riverways crown. We was invited in with the warmest greeting and beautiful smiles and the mouth watering smells of fresh baking mixed with the aroma of the frying of the best pork bangers iv tasted for years.Iv never been on a barge before but what a delight it’s small but quite roomy inside, immaculately clean and the views are breathtaking especially in the amazing spring Sunshine (there’s nothing better than having a great cup of coffee with a family of ducks waddling by).The chef was creating breakfast delights and the food tastes as good as it smells (I should know being a award winning chef keep up the great work) the locals mixed with boat owners first timers mixed with dog walkers with smiles and laughter and I noticed orders for the homemade bread and butter and clotted cream being asked for by every second customer ( I know what I’m trying next ).The lady who took my order was one of the nicest lady’s i have ever met full of life with the warmest smile and the greatest of compliments for every paying customer she graced the serving floor of the rocking boat like she was on rollerscates attached to a cloud with the finesse of a ballerina this must be a proper learn of the job skill top marks for that.In a nut shell if you come across this place you really need to give this place a try actually if you read this review find the address and make a special visit. It has it all, the quirkiness, the cuteness, great people, great setting lovely laughs and great homecooked breakfast and food and cakes trust me it’s a lovely experience and the tomato to bacon ratio is spot on.Five stars and great stuff from gongoozlers breathtaking boat cafe.See you again PAUL and JEN

It was warm and cozy inside while we watched narrow boats glide past on the canal through the rain drops on the window. The people running the cafe offered polite and friendly service.Tip: If the door is shut but you can see people inside, don't be afraid to knock! As we arrived late morning there was only a few people there so we were able to get a table straight away. There was a good selection available for breakfast and our orders were taken quickly. Our food and drinks came as quickly as you would expect from a small kitchen and the service was friendly. The food was good and the portion sizes decent. The boat has just been refurbished and continues to serve excellent food and home made cakes. The food is cooked to order, served piping hot by friendly and helpful staff. In particular, the English breakfast is excellent as well as great omelettes. For an extra 50p you can buy a packet of food and feed the ducks.

What can be better than a traditional breakfast overlooking the canal? In a restricted environment the staff were cheerful and chatty, explaining food would take a little time as they were already cooking for ten others who had arrived shortly before us. The boat has just benefitted from a winter refit and whilst fairly cramped and basic, it provides a welcome place to rest and watch passing boats and ducks, as well as feed. The food is plentiful and well cooked, with a selection of home made cakes available for afternoon tea etc. and they are happy to provide takeaway drinks and food.

A unique situation being a restaurant on a narrow boat. The food is always excellent with super breakfasts all freshly cooked, great sausages, bacon and their signature fried potatoes.Tea or coffee in large mugs. It's great value too and a friendly atmosphere. You won't regret coming whatever time of day. superb

Good basic breakfast menu. The food was cooked to order and arrived at a positive nuclear temperature. So many cafes I go to the food arrives tepid because it's been put on a cold plate... not here. I found the staff to be very friendly, asking me where I was from etc. You're in a narrow boat on the canal and if your lucky, like I was, a swan will look in through the window at you! The cakes looked tempting... definitely will be going back.

I have been here a few times, and every time it is such a treat - my husband is gluten free and they made a fantastic fry up for him using bread he takes along, they made sure to use fresh oil for him. There is a cosy solid fuel stove (could be a hazard for toddlers). I can see it is a real fave with locals and dog-walkers a like.

Our friends had asked if my husband and I would like to go for breakfast but didn't tell us where we would be going, but to our surprise we walk along the canal to find a barge that was the café where we was going to have our breaky. It was great how different it was lovely sitting on the canal watching the other barges going by and having a wonderful cooked breakfast. Staff very friendly we would highly recommend a visit to Gongoozlers.

Firstly it's a very unusual and relaxing setting , I've been several times to this barge on the canal , with family friends and work colleagues. Every time I go , I leave more relaxed than when I arrived, plus really good old fashioned fried bread toboot.

Quintessential & Quirky canal side cafe. Welcoming and cosy inside. There's even a log burner to keep you toasty on cooler days. Great value too. Brilliant cycle pit stop. Spread the word!

My hubby, two boys and I visited this quirky little barge in the summer holidays. Gongoozlers is a beautiful cafe barge, moored up on the canal. The owner, Avril, is a lovely, friendly hostess with the mostest, who cooks the most delicious homemade food. Gongoozlers is surprisingly larger than you think once inside. It comfortably sits around 14 people, without feeling overcrowded. My boys loved waving to passing barges and it was great to watch the ducks swim by. We found the portions very generous and reasonably priced. We opted for toasted sandwiches which came with either salad and coleslaw or fried potatoes.........scrumptious. The hot chocolate with marshmallows were a bit hit with the boys too. Avril also sells homemade slices of cake. Try the lemon and lavender........mouth watering! Just opposite the barge are a few wooden benches on a grassed area, where you can sit out with your food or while you are waiting for your order. Takeaway snacks and drinks are available too, which is handy for food on the move. Duck food is on sale for just 50p a bag which which lasted the boys ages. For something that little bit different, I would strongly recommend Gongoozlers. You won't be disappointed.

I visited Braunston Marina with my partner, his brother and his brothers wife this week. Their Mom grew up on a barge. She was ashamed of this at the time. Barge people were treated at the time like travellers are treated today.....say no more! Their Grandad however became the first coal merchant in Coventry to deliver coal on a lorry! Went to see the plaque dedicated to a lady nee Grantham (their mother maiden name) That aside, we had a unique experience in Gongoozlers Rest!

I visited Gongoozlers with a relative who lives locally. It only seats maybe 14 people, but it's on a canal boat, so space is obviously at a premium. What it lacks in space it makes up for in character. A steaming mug of tea and a really tasty toastie were provided from the tiny galley, and I'm told the breakfasts are rather good too. It was lovely to sit inside out of the rain and watch the ducks swimming by just a few feet away. I'm hoping next time I visit, I'll be taken there again.

We called in for breakfast last Sunday after reading about the restaurant on Tripadvisor. We all enjoyed the food the service was attentive & we sat by the stove keeping cosy & warm. There is a varied menu considering the size of the galley. Prices were affordable food was tasty & freshly cooked for you which makes a change these days. It is a little difficult to find & a nice big sign would help in the marina.

Our grandchildren stay with us every half term and holiday. Their first question is always "Can we go to the barge for breakfast?". We never say "No" because we love it as much as them. We prefer the choice of six items breakfast but many people go for the full monty which is huge, both excellent. The place is popular with boat people and canal walkers as well as local regulars like us.Since there are only twelve seats, you may have to wait to get on board. If the weather is fine there is the alternative of dining in the adjacent garden but the real attraction is to eat on the boat.

Have your breakfast with a difference. its a cafe on a barge and only setas 12 people. The food was good albeit a little bit more expensive than average. We actually went twice for breakfast during our stay. Well worth a walk along the canal and then enjoy some food

We love going to Gongoozelers Rest in fact taking a small group next week but it is our usual favourite to take visitors too for something quite different. Take a walk along the canal, each way for a while before settling in for a super breakfast, they do quite the best bacon butties here.
