My husband and I ordered food earlier today and after more than 1 HOUR WAITING we decided to phone to see when it was coming. The woman who took the phone call said that they tried to phone us (though we didn't receive any calls) and for this reason they didn't start even to make our order, that if we wanted the food, we needed to wait 1 HOUR MORE. Not happy with that, I have to say she had no manners whatsoever, and when I asked to speak with the manager, she denied the request and hung up on us 3 TIMES!!! After years and years ordering food here I can say they lost a regular costumer.

We were the only non-Chinese in the place again, always a good sign. The decor is hardly salubrious and the draft from the front door that does not shut properly is a real nuisance, even in summer, but the food always trumps those niggles.

Having read several reviews, and realising this was close to our hotel, we decided to give it a go - and were very glad we did! Yes it doesn't look much from the outside, and the interior is quite café-style, but that's not why we came. The food is absolutely delicious and huge portions; with a Chinese menu at the front (complete with pictures) and also an English "Chinese" menu at the back, everyone is catered for! It's always a good sign when a Chinese restaurant actually has lots of Chinese people in it, and this one very much did when we went, but at no point did we feel awkward or unwelcome - they really are catering for a mixed clientele here. The servers were really friendly and helpful and the meal was excellent value for money.

Eating in the restaurant is still very competitive price wise but ordering take out is so cheap it’s quite astonishing, especially given how much of a good quality the food is.

Freshly prepared and hot on the table. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The service itself was adequate but kitchen staff must have been very busy cooking considering the intervals. If you want real Chinese food in Cardiff, this is the place to visit. When you come in, the first thing you notice is the number of Chinese people eating here, always a good sign. They have 2 menus, standard food you'd find in any Chinese take away in the country and the Chinese menu. The Chinese menu has plenty of pictures so it's easy to know what you ate getting. On my last visit we ordered the sea bass in BBQ STYLE SAUCE, the lamb with green and red pepper, kailan in garlic sauce (all from the Chinese menu) and the crispy seaweed off the standard menu. The fish is cooked whole, so there are bones in it, but with a little bit of effort I got them all out in one piece. Food was fantastic as always and packed with flavour. It wasn't the best looking rest aunt, rather plain but we got our food and head de back to the hotel were staying to eat it, never in my life have I seen such weird looking food. We both tried the curry and it was awful, just watery with bits of veg and other things which i cant say what they were. the rice was soggy. Now the chips were ok and a large bag of them but when it came to the chicken on a skewer and a rib (in the same tray) it looked awful. I was the one that got brave to try the one rib and to be honest it tasted like a pork sausage, it looked like some kind of a sausage ,that's the best way to describe it. I couldn't eat more than the one mouthful. The so called chicken on the skewer with it was so bad ,we were not brave enough to even try that so it all went in the bin. The Chinese menu (with pictures) is not for the faint hearted and would probably not suit western tastes. We ate a little more conservatively from another menu however we were fascinated by a young couple building their own "hot pot" selecting their own items including mussels, prawns chicken vegetables etc and cooking it on their table in a stock pot. Very popular with the local Chinese community - and even visiting Chinese tourists - who were all eating what appeared to be a Chinese equivalent of a fondue. We stayed with the set menu, which was piping hot, plentiful and tasty. Banana fritters were cooked to perfection - the ice cream alternative was a Cornetto, which felt a bit out of place, but we really couldn't fault it. Ate here Wednesday. Asked taxi driver for a good Chinese restaurant. He did well. Only one other western couple apart from ourselves so always think it bodes well. Cash only but that is ok. Plenty to chose from. Wish had been more courageous with choosing. Next time. Opted for set menu for 2. It was lovely and tasty. I just wish they had given us hot or at least warm plates to put the food on. Bit dated decor wise but food made up for it. Would visit again

Traveling alone to Wales for a business meeting I felt like having chinese, so a quick search online for places to eat near the Premier Inn (Queen Street) the Golden Corner aka No 23, came up on the list. After settling in I headed off to the Golden Corner a cool 2 minute walk from the Premier Inn.I ordered the Set Menu for One:The Egg Fried Rice was well cooked, it tasted fresh & had a nice fragrant smell. The Beef in Black Bean Sauce was the highlight, the beef was tender, succulent & well cooked & the flavours well balanced. The spring rolls were okay, could not manage even one of the 5 chicken balls, as I was feeling quite full at this stage.Compliments to the chef(s) for using quality ingredients to prep their food. All the dishes werefresh , colourful, flavoursome & the portions were generous!Good value for money, would definitely recommend. The staff was friendly and chatted whilst I waited for my food.

I went in here and I went up to the counter and I was told sharply "sit down" i thought whatever and sat down but you would of got excellent if it wasn't for the sit down comment like a dog and because it does look a bit like a café inside the placeI think its the tables that do it (or it needs a little bit of brightening up and has probably stayed in the same style for 15 years without any refurbishmentAnyway while I sat down I waited for my chicken chow meinIt was one of these days when it was raining and I couldn't decide where to eat so I ended up hereMy chicken chow mein arrived quite quickly really and I enjoyed it to the point that it filled me up and I would eat here again but hopefully with "please take a seat" this time instead of "sit down"When I paid for the meal I got told cash onlyI do think this place is big on cash but the food is niceGo in here and try it for yourself but ignore the dated café Chinese look

There aren't that many true Chinese restaurants in the UK outside of Soho, and this is one of the best. Always packed full of Chinese customers (a good sign), and the menu is comprehensive and good value. I've only ever had take out from here, however, this is some the best Chinese food I have ever had; comparable with some of the best food I have had in Asia. Service is friendly and fast, and food is always fresh and tasty. Highly recommended.

We decided to give this place a try as it is just along the road from the premier inn we were staying at.It looks a little bit tired from the outside but it is spotlessly clean and the food was some of the best Chinese we have ever had!!Plenty of choice on the menu, we had a mixed platter of Vietnamese spring rolls, seaweed, prawn toast and chicken satay skewers to share, followed by chicken and green pepper with black bean sauce for me and king prawn with black bean sauce for hubby both with egg fried rice and it was gorgeous!! With a bottle of wine the bill came to £35, worth every penny! They only take cash but you are told this when you go in but we had no problem with this. Don't let the outside put you off, go in and give it a try, you won't regret it!!

6 of us had a meal at this place yesterday. Initially we were going to walk past as reviews were very mixed. I'm glad we didn't as the food was very good indeed. 6 of us had the £23.50 perhead buffet (dropping the soup in favour of more mixed starters). The food was very good indeed (all 6 of us agreed). The surroundings are not too salubrious but it was comfortable enough. English was spoken by some staff (not all) but that was not a problem. We were the only non-asians in the restaraunt. In summary - don't be put off by the reviews, the food is really very good indeed, the girls that served us were very pleasent and keen to please. I'm sure we will go back.note - they only take cash!!

3 of us popped in here for meal , greeted by a very young waiter with a welcoming words saying cash only cash only cash only , sat a a table in this dreary place wondering if we should leave straight away , but fingers crossed we stayed , what a bad decision. the waiter brought taty dirty menus to us and said cash only twice to us , ordered drinks then food , food came and looked tempting swimming in grease and water, chicken chow mien, crispy beef , half roast duck (still half frozen) satay pork and rice . the rice you could not get out of bowl as it had been over microwaved and was a giant sticky ball . 3 small bits of what I hoped was chicken .crispy beef was defiantly crispy , more like dirty toe nails fried in stale dirty oil , need I say any more about the rest of the food ,so disappointed with the whole experience , complained politely but with futile rude responses , such a shame as had good food here a while ago ,avoid this place until they learn how to be restauranteurs

I walk past this place almost every day, and having already had a take away from here (which was lovely) me and my partner were keen to dine in. On arrival we were sat down and given a menu each. We were given a standard "Westernised Chinese menu" e.g sweet and sour chicken. Anybody of their own Chinese community were given another menu and were concentrated on more than "western customers". I found this very rude and I felt segregated from other dinners and with the staff being extremely intimating and rude I didn't feel comfortable asking to look at the other menu. We asked for a set menu for two, and to make sure I checked with the the waitress that it was £18.50 for two people and in broken English she assured me it was. As we went through the courses they got worse. The starters were edible but the main sweet and sour was terrible and overly sweet. The beef in black bean was like eating fairy liquid and the egg fried rice was a joke. It was gloopy and stuck together in the bowl. They made us wait for dessert even though I said We had to go which was annoying. An extremely fatty deep fried banana. To top this experience off the waitress gave us the bill and had charged us 2x £18.50! I said to her that we only wanted 1 and she aggressively said "it's 18.50 per person!" I can't believe how awkward and unpleasant this experience was! I urge anyone reading this to not go there!

I visited on a cold Monday evening in November but was completely cheered by this place. When I looked around I saw I was the only non-Chinese person in a mainly full restaurant. That says a lot, and looking across at some of the other tables I wish I knew a bit more about what they had ordered. It looked great but generally it is for larger groups of people, although there were quite a few 2's and 3's present enjoying good food and conversation with a warm and lively atmosphere.I went for chicken curry boiled rice and Vietnamese spring rolls (lovely and spicy). Boring maybe, but gorgeous and hit the spot! And a glass of house white. Again good quality and value - all delicious. Maybe I was in a good mood, but is this place was anywhere near where I live, I would be in there at least once a week!Oh, its next door to the Premier Inn on Churchill Way and is also known as 23 Chinese Restaurant as it is at 23, Churchill Way.

Even though staff can be either lovely or unhelpful, the food is still wonderful - huge portions of great tasting food. Will keep coming back. Had the hot and sour soup this time so much content for a soup, yummy. Had duck with ginger and spring onion which was lovely and closest to more traditional fare but really enjoyed.

Recently tried here whilst visiting cardiff from scotland and was the best chinese i have had in a long time. The peking ribs to start were delicious the sauce was incredible and the quality of the meat was brilliant, and was a big portion. The mains were also big portions and the food was of a high quality and overall the food here was brilliant. The only negatives here was there was no card payments cash only and the drinks seemed poured out of a bottle into a glass rather than a can of pop.Even though with these small negatives the positives of the food made the meal brilliant and would recommend anyone in the area to try here as they are reasonably priced for the lovely food and big portions

We ordered a mix of roast pork and duck, rice, drinks and prawn dumplings. We always order the roast mix as it is hard to find this authentic, crispy, Chinese dish. It's just a shame that the waitress is rude and the service is terrible. They speak bad, broken English (luckily I can speak Chinese to them), they also ask every time why I am not ordering more food. The amount I ordered is more than enough for us but they make us feel like we're being stingy when I can very well afford to order the whole menu. I've been eating Asian food my whole life as I come from Singapore. I'm a real foodie and I've eaten in hawker centres, high end restaurants, street food stalls and more. I can confirm that the food is delicious and authentic, but the terrible attitude of the staff puts me off going here more often. They should really replace their staff. What a shame.

First impressions, the decor is strange. It's not modern or fancy and the look is dated. Essentially it's a mishmash. I've been to restaurants which are far more fancier looking, so I wasn't sure what to expect. When you visit you'll know what I mean. The service is hit and miss. Some members of staff are friendly others are not. When we visited the staff we having dinner at the top end of the restaurant and no one explained what the fridges and freezers filled with various items on the side of the restaurant were. We were given a menu this was helpful as it contained pictures of what the dishes looked like. I know that sounds really stupid, but given that the staff didn't explain anything to us we found that it came in handy. The food was slow to come to our table, but actually well worth the wait. Given how things were going this was completely unexpected as by this point I thought we were going to regret coming here. However, the food was lovely in particular the pork belly selection. It was delicious. In fact, it was the best I've ever had. The pork belly platter came in three distinct styles normal deep friend, BBQ and sweet one. The noodles and rice were good too. This place is definitely worth visiting in spite of the initial drawbacks. Oh and the fridges and freezers contain a variety of different foods including dessert. This is because the restaurant charges I think £17.00 per person and you cook and eat as much as you want in a pot. This is mainly for large groups of people.

Whilst in town looking for somewhere to eat, we found this fantastic place. A mix of people enjoying their meals including families. There are two menus, one of which was the authentic chinese. Our favourite was house special rice and hong kong sweet and sour king prawns. Don't be put off by the negative comments here, the food is delicious, freshly prepared and delivered by a lovely waitress. We will call back next month to try other dishes.

I cannot understand the negative review of 6th July!!!!! My wife and I sat down in a fairly empty restraunt, bar a couple of tables occupied by Chinese, a good advert for the food and price. The menus were bought very quickly and advised that we could only pay cash as cards are not accepted. More groups came in, each including Chinese people. There is an extensive range of options, mainly Szechuan. The portion sizes were value for money. The hot and sour soup was the best I have had ever, even having lived in Hong Kong for 15 years. You can hear the roar of the wok burners when the kitchen door is opened, which is reassuring that the food cooked in the best traditions. The dishes were served very hot temperature. We over ordered, and where offered take away boxes but we were in a hotel. We were given a complentary mouth cleanser at the end of the meal, consisting of melon. The refrigerators were in full view of diners, and we saw a kitchen staff perform temperature checks, and best buy dates. We were very lucky to have such an enjoyable, relaxing filling meal. Two menus, one the traditional list, and the other a book with accompanying meal pictures.A good place for traditional dim sums etc.

We waited about 15 mins for food to arrive-even though the place was empty! English seemed to be a major problem for the girl who "served" us. The staff seemed to be more interested in their own conversations than attending customers. Although the prices were not cheap, this was without question the worst asian food we had ever had the misfortune to be served. Communication limitations prompted us to leave without dinner or fuss. The lethargic and apathetic attitude of the waitress was pretty reflective of the empty restaurant. A miserable and costly experience.

Food tastes good, not a lot of it for the price which is disappointing. My order has come wrong a few times, or something has been missing. When you ring back up and try to explain, they aren't very interested in helping you come to a solution. But it does depend on what staff are in as some of them are very helpful. The food does come quickly and hot which is good. Overpriced for what you receive as its mostly filled with sauce or rice with little meat/fillings as it saves money filling up containers with cheaper items.

Food is reasonably price and quality is good. My favourite is the Special Fried Rice which comes with extra pork meat with sweet plum sauce on top and a fried egg. This restaurant has been around for the past 40 years and the food still taste the same as back then which is a winning formula. Lady owner is very helpful and very polite in person and over the phone which you can ring ahead your orders.
