Godfrey's in St Albans

Absolutely love this place, probably the best fish and chips in Hertfordshire. Takeaway downstairs but we always eat in upstairs where they have lovely wooden beamed dining rooms, very afternoon tea feel! The menu is v reasonably priced and the meals come with their homemade tartare sauce and one of curry/mushy peas/coleslaw. Personal favourite is the scampi and chips and I always have it with a cream soda.

Went to Godfrey’s last night for the first time. We opted to sit in the restaurant. It was a warm, cosy atmosphere. The waiting staff were extremely efficient. The fish was cooked to order. It was the best fish and chips we have ever eaten. The batter on the fish wasn’t greasy, and it was very light. The chips were lovely and crispy, again not greasy. You get a good selection of sides - different types of peas, gravy etc. I would recommend booking on a Saturday night. We will return

Great take away. Steep stairs but a quaint old house for the restaurant. Delicious fish and chips but pies and plenty of sides available too. Wine and beer as well as soft drinks. Loo upstairs.

Having been a customer for over a decade, I will still state it is the best fish and chips I've ever had, and wonderful service from very friendly staff. Even when it's busy they manage to get delicious food out in a decent amount of time. Great for a take-away, or to eat in.

We had a fish and chip takeaway tonight and I am sorry to say, it wasn't it's usual good standard. The fish itself was still of good quality, (although it was a smaller piece of fish than usual for a 'regular'), but the batter wasn't it's usual nice crispiness, especially underneath where it was soggy and inedible. The chips too are usually lovely and crispy but tonight they were soft and oily tasting. Noted that Luke nor his mum were not there doing the cooking, so this could have been a factor. It's been our favourite fish and chip shop for many years, since it opened, so hoping this was just a one-off...

Superb take away shop. Food amazing and service always top notch. Recommend pre ordering and collecting 20 minutes later as it can get very busy.

Easily the best fish and chips across St Albans and Harpenden. Quality is always high and so far never been disappointed once.

Great menu, good for eat in upstairs (this time) or takeout. Also had ice-cream afterwards. Came quickly, the peas were wrong kind but were quickly replaced but we noted the next table also had that problem. They do minted mashed garden peas which I've never had elsewhere. The plaice can be huge and we have shared this previously. But you can take what's left home.

Great fish and chip shop/restaurant. The restaurant is on several floors up fairly steep stairs so not the best if you have mobility issues. Food is great. Lots of choice and fairly reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly and look after you well. Can be very busy and parking is very limited outside but there are car parks nearby.

Amazing fish and chips - the place is a bit small though

Fantastic quality of fish and chips. Probably the best you'll have. The batter is light and crispy, the chips perfectly cooked and there's some magic in those peas. Wonderful service and great dining experience.

Never fails to deliver the most excellent tasting fish and chips (and the best garden peas and tartare sauce). There's friendly, helpful and speedy service. Can't fault this place, it's so brilliant we drive 45 minutes just to eat here.

Many years ago I was in Harpenden and tried Godfrey's and the cod was delicious so when they opened their shop in Bushey I used it until it unfortunately closed (I live in Watford). Last Friday evening I decided to travel by bus to Harpenden to Godfrey's so I ordered a medium cod but when I opened the box I thought I had been given a small cod instead on pointing this out I was told it was a medium cod it just looked small because the fish was thicker on leaving the shop and preceding to eat the fish another customer came up to me and laughing at me and said that what I had looked like a fish finger not a medium cod and I should complain which I said to him I had but it had made no difference needles to say I went home feeling somewhat humiliated. In light of your explanation I would like to apologise and amend my review to "excellent service" and look forward to visiting Godfrey's again. Perhaps other customers might refrain from making inappropriate comments on my purchase in future

As a whole the fish and chips wasn't bad but also wasn't anything particularly special. (mostly due to the portion size) The person in front ordered the same size (small) cod and it was double the size, the chips and coleslaw were both very nice but again small portion of chips. Also value for money was not there

Not visited for a year and sadly prices have gone up significantly, but more worryingly the complementary homemade tartare sauce that was included with all fish, is no longer complimentary. And they close early everyday. Seems the golden age of Godfreys is gone.... On the plus side - Cod did taste good and service was prompt

The cod & chips were so delicious with amazing mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce! My Mum had the scampi and she said that too was delicious. The service was efficient and very friendly. The fish is made to order so is very fresh and the batter crispy! We live half an hour from Harpenden but it is well worth the journey.

My parents' favourite! Food and service were excellent; my folks come here often and love the fish, and my battered halloumi was light and delicious. Chips were the best I've had in years. Only docking a star because a significant amount of menu items turned out to be unavailable.

This place is absolutely amazing! All the staff were kind and helpful, food was GREAT and service overall was a 10/10! Would definitely come back and if I could rate it higher, I certainly would!

Had Luke and his team cater for party with their excellent mobile unit, wow was it a success! Extremely professional and friendly serving superb food, most guests agreed was best fish and chips they have ever had! Good selection of mains, including a vegetarian option, and side dishes. Curry sauce and minted peas were especially appreciated, would highly recommend.

Good quality fish and chips restaurant in Harpenden. Regular size is quite satisfying. Small eating space, good and fast service. You can choose various options next to the main dishes, yet coleslaw is very good.

Best chippy in the area. A bit pricey but the quality is excellent!

Fantastic homemade Chicken & Leek pie, I’d even go as far to say that it was the best pie I’ve ever had!

This is the place if you really want a nice fish and chips. Special made tartar source is a must try. The fish are excellent. And so as the chips. Do remember they close on Sundays now.

Went with a group from South Hertfordshire Coeliac society. Had a room to ourselves. Staff were friendly and courteous, especially with a mixup of order for our large group. Wide range of gluten free options available. Food was perfect and really enjoyable.

Having sampled a wide range of fish and chips around the UK, I rate the ones served at Godfrey's to be among the very best. The food is always freshly cooked and is of a consistently high standard. Service is excellent too.

Eat in upstairs Pleasant atmosphere and nice surroundings. Cannot have a conversation without everyone hearing as it is so quiet. Cod regular size was a good size, incredible batter and really delicious. Chips crisp & yummy. Mushy peas good consistency. Wasn’t a fan of the tartare sauce I’m afraid. Service very good. Recommended.

Visited here , for Fish and Chips,for the first time on recommendation. The fish was average and not very soft, and the condiments saved the day. Coleslaw, curry sauce, halumi fries, mushy peas and the batter were just superb . Nice ambiance with a wood 🔥 place . Coleslaw is worth going back for.

1) Food Quality (5/5) - The fish is generally excellent - juicy and plump with batter that is crispy but not oily. Homemade pies are delicious and would put most pubs to shame. The zingy homemade tartar sauce is a nice touch 2) Food Range (5/5) - Standard chip shop range but since every component is so well executed, they score a full 5/5 3) Service (3/5) - They need to seriously up their game here. The queueing system is a shambles. Customers are not always served in the order in which they arrived. Servers is usually polite but often lacklustre and inattentive 4) Atmosphere (3/5) - The dining-in rooms upstairs are quirky and cosy in this traditional building. However, the takeaway area (while attractively decorated and clean looking) is usually crowded with hungry patrons getting on top of each other, creating an air of palpable tension 5) Value (4/5) - This place is on the expensive side, particularly if adding sundries like sauces. Fishfingers at £1.50 each or sausages at £1.30 really rack up if feeding a family 6) Overall Verdict (4/5) - I want to give this place a 5/5 because the owners of this popular restaurant have brought a touch of fish and chip magic to Harpenden. Went to restaurant. Our “medium” cod and chips much smaller than the table next to us who also ordered “medium”. Consistency is key I’m afraid. Might as well have ordered “small”. Not good enough. Quiet on a Saturday night, says it all really.

The best fish an chips EVER, absolutely outstanding, didn't realize there is seating upstairs an they come an take your order an yes a bit pricey for medium haddock chips an peas but a decent pot of tea that gives you two reasonable mugs of tea roughly £15 but i think well worth it as a treat

Such a delight! The fish and chips were fresh and so yummy! I’d highly recommend the minty peas as a side. A bonus was that yummy homemade tartare sauce. The other fab bonus is the service was excellent! And the shop front is so cute, bright and clean. We will definitely be back after a very enjoyable and cozy dine in experience.

The chips are very soggy, the fish is getting lost in a mountain of deep fried batter. The staff sometimes unceremoniously delegate the addition of salt and vinegar to clients. No delivery options.

The food from Godfrey's is always top notch. However my gripe today is about the lack of heat in the upstairs restaurant. Way too cold! It's now winter and I don't expect to wear a coat when sitting down to eat
