Godalming Tandoori in Waverley

There is simply nothing to praise about this place, the staff or the food. Avoid. Having served bottles of beer it took over an hour to get any attention and another hour before food was delivered to the table. The rushed and slightly grumpy owner of the place was assisted by a scruffy looking person in a basball hat; a person with a “not my place mate, I’m only helping out” uninterested attitude.

Very friendly and very tasty meal. Looking forward to going again.

At 0930 this morning Booked table through Quandoo for two people for lunchtime today. Decided to call restaurant at 1050, to check they received reservation, phone manner was very abrupt, I was asked when I’d booked it, to which I advised this morning, to be told that’s too late, yet I had confirmation from Quandoo of the booking. When I asked to book a table I was advise no, too late a notice. Definitely will not try and book here again, will take my money elsewhere. Sorry to be such an inconvenience to you!

Don't even think about eating here - under spiced, under-seasoned tasteless food. Tough tasteless lamb and very small quantities of meat. I have honestly not tasted such bland Indian food before. There are much better Asian restaurants in town. TBH if this wasn't a takeaway & I was sitting in the restaurant I would have left - My advice AVOID!

Visited for the first (and only time) recently. Served by the grumpiest waiter/owner ever, several items on the order were wrong, food mediocre (where are these people giving it great reviews going for their curry if they think this food is great!!?) and they massively overcharged us on the bill. Bill was presented as a scribbled bit of paper and, as we were with a relative, I didn't want to be pedantic by checking it, though doing a mental calculation and subsequent check when I got home, realised they had overcharged by around £20 (there were only 3 of us dining) so be aware and ask for a detailed bill. No wonder the server was finally smiling at us when we left - not only had he overcharged us, but we tipped as well!!!! Definitely not visiting again.

Got lamb chops to start with tasted ok but were tiny for £6…. Curry was ok but not much meat, naan bread was small, mushroom-rice was full of onions for some reason good job I like onions I asked for some mint sauce with my starter and they brought me a pickle tray and probably would of charged me for it if I hadn’t have said no. They charged 10% service charge without asking that’s why they didn’t have to be nice to you….my recommendation is find another Indian restaurant

Takeout with a selection of dishes, not the quality I remember at all from previous deliveries or dining in. Salad looked as though it was several days old, very greasy meat and extremely oily sauce. Poppadoms not fresh and overall very disappointing. Think it may be time to look elsewhere.

Great restaurant, fantastic food , excellent service and very friendly. My elderly parents have been concerned about eating out since the pandemic however, they were very pleasantly surprised by the social distancing at Godalming Tandoori and were equally impressed by the extensive menu and great tasting food. We will be back :-)

Been twice as loved the first time so much ! Each time we have been the only people sitting in which seems such a shame as it’s such a nice atmosphere in there and quick service and very lovely food ! Would love to see it more bussling inside instead of just people nipping in to grab a takeaway ! Lovely converted pub. Will be coming again sometime :) only little negative to just add is each time we get the bill does seem terrible expensive for what we are getting for 2 people compared to if you pay that amount at some other places….

I will not come back here anymore, the owner on the bill I can just say that he robbed us! I had 3 people for dinner there! I used a taste card 2 in 1, i.e. we pay for 1 meal and we have 2, the bill is written on a piece of paper by hand! £ 90 I notified him that we had a taste discount, he lowered the price by £ 8 upon reflection! after returning home I used the just eat application, ordering the same things as £ 61 without a taste card !!! I do not recommend this place! food even good but owner cheat

Finest indian food and service I have had anywhere in the UK I live in Wiltshire and have friends in the area and always come here shame I can't find one as good local to me

We have ordered delivery from here for 3years and it’s always been brilliant food, we get on well with them. But tonight it was terrible. Arrived freezing cold, very chewy, not very nice tasting and just didn’t feel fresh, all round very disappointing. Surprising but very let down, not sure whether to order again or not 🙁

Food good. No staff masks or PPE evident. No sign-in or QR code check-in. Won't be returning until requirements in place. I thought this was a requirement by law.

The food here is very good, and we all enjoyed our meal The staff could be more enthusiastic that a party of 4 want to eat in their establishment, but the most memorable part of the evening was that at no point did the waiter or any other member of staff wear a mask this is inexcusable. This is not a choice it is mandatory And for this reason will not be return in the near future

GTR is a very good Indian restaurant, excellent food and friendly service. We are regular customers and always will be. The menu choice is extensive, and it is never a problem for the chef to adjust dishes to taste when requested. Anwar is a good host, and we can recommend this restaurant.

Used the Godalming Tandoori for the first time last Saturday and have to say one of the best curries I’ve had in a longtime. Obviously it was a takeaway, but can’t wait till we can eat there as staff were very friendly and am sure the restaurant experience will be tops.

Well tonight we got a takeaway from there. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. We each had what was meant to be Lamb Rogon Josh a dish we love and have many many time in Goa and other places and normally has a tomatoe base and as a result a delictable sauce. What we got had little sauce three small segments of tomatoe, a total lack of any taste. Added to this they somehow managed to burn the poppadoms and the nan bread was only part cooked and very doughy. What an absolute let down WE WILL DEFINATELY NOT BE GOING BACK THERE AGAIN. Don't waste your time or money!!!

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are lovely. Anwar. The owner greeted me most wholeheartedly on a simple walk in for one. Service which I never expect as restaurants tend to not like single walkins as much as couples or larger groups. The other member of staff on the bar that day was equally welcoming and friendly. I ordered a murgh massalam which was expertly prepared and cooked to perfection. Excellent chefs in this restaurant they really know what they are doing and you can tell that the recepies are traditional and well thought out. I had an onion bhajee starter which came piping hot and the poppadoms are amazing. I have never seen a poppadoms like that and never tasted something so simple that's so good. Main dish as I said earlier was some of the best food I'd ever had. All in all. The food and service is some of the best around. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and has beautiful fairy lights and lovely jazz playing in the background which really makes it a proper evening experience. I've never been to this restaurant before and I really cannot understand some of the comments on their page. It's a truly wonderful experience and as a foodie I eat in alot of places often by myself never been this happy with a meal and service before.

Do not waste your time going here. We have been to many curry restaurants and this is without doubt THE WORST BY FAR in terms of; the food was awful, the atmosphere was non-existent, it was cold and the customer service (if you can call it that) was the worst I have ever experienced. Oh and my partner received mild food poisoning from this meal as well, luckily she didn’t eat much of the chicken or it would have been bad. Waiter also tried to overcharge drinks and lied. Abysmal customer service.

The replies this restaurant posts on here proves they neglect genuine and honest complaints and proves their lack of customer service and explains why the restaurant had absolutely nobody dining in there at the time we went. Before I write the details of the night I’m going to say this; their response shutting down any of my comments will be absolutely false, everything I am about to say is completely true with no fabrication whatsoever. They will claim this is ‘vile and fabricated’ but I can assure you we are very fair with our restaurant reviews and would not do this. After all there is nothing to gain so why lie? We phoned up to book this restaurant to which we were greeted over the phone by a very dull, not rude but certainly not polite voice. We sidelined this as we were there for the food/service not a voice over the phone. We then arrived at the restaurant and could see nobody else was inside which we thought strange for a town like Godalming during peak eating out hours - we were soon to find out why! Anyway it was quite dark and cold inside, had a ghostly feel to the place but was fine. We ordered the popadoms and 2 mint dips with 2 cokes and 2 tap waters. We received 2 cokes, the popadoms, chutney dips, (not the mint dips we specifically ordered), and no tap waters - so I had to go up 10 minutes later to ask for them again, which I didn’t mind as people can forget and we’re not fussy people and are very understanding (even though there was literally nobody else to serve so it was not as if they’re busy and forgot). The mains came, one chicken Korma and one chicken Madras, I thought mine was pretty tasteless, but it wasn’t bad enough for me to complain as I eat pretty much anything when it comes to food. My partner had a Korma and was telling me the chicken didn’t taste cooked properly and the sauce tasted nothing like a Korma (I tried the Korma and can agree it tasted rubbish, nothing like a Korma and the chicken was underdone, and I’m not a fussy eater at all!). Because we’re quite shy/try to avoid confrontation and are too polite with things like this we chose not to complain and there was no point anyway as we were using meerkat meals so one meal was technically free anyway so decided we’d just pay the price and leave. So we asked for the bill, gave him the meerkat meals code and he came over and held the bill next to him, said the price and said cash or card? To which I replied saying “can we see our bill?!”, he then said well it’s ‘X amount’ and I said “okay but we still need to see our bill to check it!?!”, so I eventually receive the bill and I check the prices (as you do) and I noticed the cokes seemed more expensive than what i remember from on the menu so I got the menu back to check and could see he tried to charge nearly £2 extra for each coke and when I asked about this his response was “no that’s because you had a medium glass this price is for a small glass”...I obviously argued back saying well we ordered ‘a coke’ at the displayed price, we didn’t ask for a bigger glass or anything so you can’t just charge us more than what’s displayed so no we are only paying the price on the menu which is what we ordered!?!! So he reluctantly changed the price to the correct price and then said there will also be a 10% service charge. My partner then said we will not be paying that, the food was awful and your service has been very poor and rude and so we are not paying any service charge. We have never refused to pay a service charge before but this service was so abysmal and to have the cheek to ask us for a tip after trying to overcharge us and not solving any of the issues there is a disgrace. We paid and left very frustrated and my partner hungry. Following from their lies in response to my partners review we did not ask for any discount on the ‘food’ other than using our meerkat discount which was always intended and we didn’t get any money off drinks as they claimed, we simply paid the actual price on the menu rather than the made up price inside the shockingly terrible ‘waiters’ head. Do not waste your time going here. This restaurant was extremely disappointing. Awful atmosphere and freezing cold. Food was cold and tasted disgusting. Waiter overcharged us and tried to argue back. When I complained about the food he didn’t try to resolve the issue or give money off- he instead asked us to pay a service charge! He also tried to hide the bill from us! Extremely unprofessional. Do not go!

We went for a launch and there were only half a menu, plus waiter was very rude, decline everything we asked told to us to wait and came straight away with terminal asking for payment... Thank you, never again

Went on the Meerkat meal offer, we couldn't fault it, very friendly staff, excellent quality food and the chef obviously knows his spices, great flavour without excessive heat. Lovely meal, would highly recommend.

Best indian food I have had for along time. Very tasty and well cooked and with excellent service.We went on a Sunday night so not that busy but lots of people turned up to get Take Aways. Would definitly go again or order a Take Away.

The owner and staff are pleasant enough. The restaurant is nice and also clean. The thing is you may not get what you ordered. I like a hot curry. I asked for a vindaloo but I got an average curry. It tasted alright but wasn't what I wanted. The owner told me it was the chefs fault. He was new and put in the wrong ingredients. Also there is a fondest of putting coconut in virtually everything, so be warned.

Strange one this. Decor is a bit weird and service decidedly sketchy but the food did taste nice (although the chicken was a little tough). The wine, although extremely limited in choice was drinkable. Worth going if you prepare yourself for the service glitches, I’d definitely eat the food again .. but via a takeaway.

Normally really great food, just occasionally not quite so good. No idea why...

It was difficult to choose 3 or 4, because the food is really good and the service is good. I have meerkat meals which should be on starter, main course and desert. I was only offered the discount on the main. They charged almost £6 for a bottle of sparkling water, and when I got the bill there was a spurious £4, which when questioned, was a service charge. This is what I call trying to get double tips, as I was about to leave a £5 tip, which is what the table next to us did. A meal for 2 that we thought would be good value ended up as nearly £50!

Fabulous food, very friendly and reasonable priced.

Never eaten in, so cannot say what it is like. Have had a few takeaways from here and they have gotten even better. Highly recommend.

We had an excellent time as part of a 50th birthday party night. There were 24 of us and the service and food exceeded our expectations. We paid a deposit which was deducted from the bill as agree. The food was very good and the waiters helpful. We brought our own cake which was brought out (plus sparklers!) at the end of the meal. And we needed help with taxis that was gratefully received. All in all, we had a fun evening and can't thank the guys enough. We thoroughly recommend Godalming Tandoori to you.

Myself and two friends visited Godalming Tandoori last night (25.01.19) and had a great meal.

Was honestly so shocked by the way they spoke to me on the phone then treated us all in the restaurant. From insulting us to trying to sneak it add extras to the bill-it was a shambles. Naan was burnt black. Not good value for money would definitely not come again

We made the mistake of arriving at 7pm clearly too early for a Friday evening as we were the first to arrive and it was some time before the next guests added to the the silence apart from a steady trickle of take away customers

I had booked a table but was late but I didn't call to say I am running bit late..when I arrived was met with very rude person..waiter guided me to the table but a person behind the bar was so rude and abrupt..I wanted to order starter so that kids can start eating but was told off " it will take time how much it usually takes. He also said , you're already late and we are fully booked". We were there till 8 the place was basically empty..we asked for water they gave us jug of water with only two glasses for 4 adults and three children.. pathetic..food was tasteless , absolute disgrace to Indian food..not very welcoming, not very professional while treating us...only name is indian restaurant but it's not. I will not recommend it to anyone.. other people may have good experience but me and my family had one of the worse and will never go there..

I have driven past this restaurant many many times over the years and finally paid a visit to it last week. The food quality was exceptional, even down to the wondrous poppadoms. All members of our group enjoyed it immensely and agreed it was one of the best curry culinary experiences we had ever had.

We used to live in Godalming many years ago and were regular diners at the old location of this restaurant. Whenever we return home from the US we try to fit in as many curries as possible, this time we managed to get back to our old haunt. So good to see the same friendly faces and to our huge relief the food was as good as we remembered. Certainly the best of the Indians we went to this time. Location is a little out of town but spacious, comfortable and well decorated. And then to the food: great multi-layered, deep flavors, good quality meat,all in all still putting out wonderful food after all these years.

The staff were constantly hanging around to make sure that everything is ok, asking you every few minutes, which was very annoying when you're trying to have this nice meal together. However the food was tasty and apart from the constant interruptions the service was good however I would say the meat was very tough like it had been cooked that day and then reheated that evening.

This is a very good Indian ,food is excellent and you are spoiled for choice if you are driving it can be a bit challenging when it’s really busy

This is a fabulous Indian restaurant within a spacious environment. The food is simply perfect and Suleiman and the staff do everything they can to accommodate. Super friendly people and a great menu.

This is the best Indian I have ever had! The food is never greasy and even the hotter curries are full of flavour and not just out to make you sweat!! We have eaten here both in the restaurant and as takeaway for the last 8 years and we have never had a duff curry! Can’t recommend it enough!!

Godalming has a good range of places to eat and the only one we visit repeatedly is the Godalming Tandoori in Ockford Road. Our last visit ensured we had very full stomachs from a selection of extremely tasty meat and vegetable dishes as well as appetisers. The service was excellent and all of the staff were helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble and I know our next visit will be very soon. Very highly recommended!

A friend and I dined here on a Tuesday evening and had the place almost to ourselves. This really is the best curry for miles around and GTR as it is affectionately known, deserves to be full every night. The welcome is genuine and each dish freshly cooked and individually spiced-each dish had its own distinctive flavour. The highly experienced chef really knows what he is doing and consistently turns out fabulous food. My friend had never eaten here before and couldn t believe how delicious it all was. We will be coming back soon! Go for the Chef's Recommended dishes.

Visited here on spur of moment as we wanted to try somewhere different for a curry. I was hesitant as it is right on outskirts and from Farncombe is a good 20 min walk (though from Godalming not too far). But I’m so glad we did! It’s an unpretentious place: still very much has feel of a pub (which it used to be). So, if you’re after glam it’s not the place. But if you’re after the most delicious curry in Godalming (a place coming down with curry houses) it’s very much the place! Every aspect of the meal was a cut above: right down to the crispy poppadoms. The butterfly king prawn was non-greasy, juicy and tasty; the king prawn pathia was succulent and thick and spicy; the peshwari nan was filled with spicy coconut and had an almost crispy quality rather than thick, doughy texture. Food A1 and the staff were lovely. I’ll go again.

Best curry I have had in ages aside from the Ashuka in Merrow which is equally good. Fresh ingredients, lashings of fresh herbs and tasty spices. Atmosphere is quaintly informal and the staff are friendly. Highly recommended for a casual night out. Only criticism - side dish portions a bit small.

Visited here with a good friend, after using a discount voucher from Eagle Radio, I must say not disappointed @ all; the food was tasty, well cooked, just the right side of hot & the staff were very helpful with giving advice on the dishes & what level of hotness they had. Thoroughly enjoyable evening; well done 1 and all. Def. come back 4 a special occasion.

Slightly odd review I guess, but ... the food here is really nice and the service good, but the two times I have been it has been empty apart from our group, which means there is really no atmosphere.

Just had an excellent meal at the Godalming Tandoori. Food was excellent, the service was friendly and efficient and Hogstar lager a real bonus. Thoroughly recommend with no reservations at all. Will definitely go again.

The food is authentic and consistently amazing. Great flavors, great portions, and very good service. The owner and server were very pleasant and wanted to genuunely ensure I was enjoying the food. Mango lassi was awesome...the put fennel seed in it, which is just the extra touch it needed. Very happy, highly recommended!

Had a good meal here served by friendly staff. The parking is awkward on the street as the passenger door has to be up against a wall. There is however a parking space right outside the restaurant which can be reached by mounting the pavement.

Our experience of eating at Anwar's Godalming Tandoori gets better and better. The Ada Lamb and Chicken Shashlik are always a treat and our first choice off the impressive menu. Service is attentive and speedy. This has to be the best Indian restaurant in Godalming.

I used to like this place, but it's been hit and miss for a while now. Often the curry is much spicer than it was the last time I ordered the same one from here. Prefer getting a delivery from here as the restaurant is very quiet most of the time.

Went for takeaway there last Saturday night as were passing and didn't fancy cooking. Really poor. My wife and I left half of it even though both hungry. I see others are fans - fair play - but can only speak from personal experience. Best avoided,

Great little restaurant with a talented chef. The spices are just right and each dish is completely different. Just can't fault the food or its presentation and served swiftly and with pleasure. A place to return to on my next visit south

We've been going to the GTR for many years, and although other curry houses have appeared on the scene, such as the Wharf (bland food, slow service) it's worth the effort to return here despite now living on the other side of town. It's a traditional curry house and the flavours are lovely, 'ada chicken' is particularly good. The service is great too, with the manager always happy to chat when we go in. The parking can be tricky but it's easily solved by using the Inn on the Lake carpark a few yards down the road.

We ordered a vegetarian main and side and some mango lassi. The curries were all anglicised and not authentic but tasted reasonable. But the mango lassi was atrocious (yogurt was off) and the manager had the audacity to justify thats how it's made and how it is in most restaurants. The replacement lassi was a bit sour and wasn't up to the mark. Never going back!

We all need a range of restaurants choices to choose from depending upon what we fancy. If you want a curry, haven't booked ahead, aren't looking for somewhere posh, perhaps you are eating with your family or mates and you just want good decent food with a smile... then this place fits the bill.I've been hear quite a few times now and enjoyed every one. The owner and waiters are always friendly and helpful. The portion sizes are reasonable, well presented and well cooked. I've never had a poor dish and everything is always eaten, no exceptions and you can't say that about every restaurant you go to.The decor is a bit loud but I don't mind. Like I said, we all need a range of restaurant options and this one is my 'reliable curry house'. I rather like it's not had a make over by some interior designer in grey with dim lighting and posh pictures.There a regular steam of people collecting take ways but this doesn't bother me. Parking is a bit of a pain but the Inn on the Lake is 2 minutes away or you can try street parking.So in summary, this isn't a posh dining experience you'd take someone on a first date but if you are dying for a good curry and a beer in a friendly relaxed environment then I think this is a very good choice.

As this is fairly close to our house we used to visit or get a take away fairly regularly. However on the last two occasions the food has been very poor indeed. on the first occasion the curry was bland and watery and arrived to table VERY quickly, poppadoms burnt and clearly old as they were soft and rubbery and the portions have shrunk. The service was terrible, I am not a fan of being starred at whilst I eat, they even tried to take my plate away before I have finished.We visited again after this thinking it could have been a one off but we had the same experience again and now we prefer to travel further away.Shame, these guys seems to be trying to cut costs but instead are losing customers. I will not get a meal from here again.

We arrived and order drinks at the table. We needed to wait for a friend and the staff helped to advise him what to order. I like a very hot curry and they made what I wanted to order.As someone who is very particular about their curry I was concerned to order so hot. Naim the server tweaked the order to my requirements.I can't recommend this establishment enough for people that are curry lovers!!!
