Glenthorne Country House in South Lakeland

The Quaker Guest House is a great place to stay. The accommodation that we had was in a separate annexe in the grounds and was well appointed. The clientele tend to be of a certain type and it would appear that many have been coming for a good number of years. The food was fine but you do have to share a table with other guests and share in the conversation which may not suit everyone. Afternoon tea is served every afternoon and is complimentary which is a nice feature. There are extensive grounds too for the children.

Glenthorne is run by the Society of Friends and recognises many of their practices and customs. It is a large popular place with great interaction at the afternoon tea and at the evening meal. The single room was small with a shared bathroom, though there was tea / coffee facilities, plenty of power points for gadget charging and excellent wifi. The staff were very polite and helpful. Drying facilities were available. The evening meal and breakfast were excellent, though there was no choice offered for the packed lunch.

Lovely evening meal with plenty of choice plus vegetarian every night. Do try the Eton Mess! If you stay over, the breakfasts are enough to keep you going all day but a packed lunch can be ordered as well. Don't miss afternoon tea with homemade cakes.

A little expensive and we felt uncomfortable at breakfast when a bell was rung for a minutes silence(it is run by Quakers) If you do stay here have an evening meal in Town
