There was a party on when we arrived at the restaurant, which was fine, however when I requested to sit in the more private part of the restaurant (rather than the table surrounded by people she had originally shown us to), the waitress said that we were better not because 'children would be running around the tables', which I thought strange but anyway. The waitress said the food would be a 'while', which turned out to be a 35 minute wait on one course. The poppadoms we received were not cleared from our table, and the food when it did arrive was very salty but not bad. I queued over 10 minutes to pay for our meal, because they were trying to fix the card machine for the man infront of us, but I wish they had have told us this so we could have lifted cash instead of queueing. When I tried politely to explain that there had been a very long wait on the food and it had left us late for the cinema, the young man I told apologised, however the more mature woman who served us snapped that we 'should have told her when we were ordering that we were in a rush', which I wasn't impressed with, as I thought an hour was plenty of time to allow for one course in a restaurant.

Buena comida y gente encantadora.

We visited this Indian restaurant on a living social deal, even at that I was sorry I went, we decided to make a Saturday night of it so arrived at 7pm to a dead I mean dead place with like one other family in the whole place and its quite big inside so you can imagine what we were thinking when we walked in the door, however we were greeted by a rather over friendly waitress, who was acting more like everyone's friend than a server, now I know its nice to be friendly and that's good but there is a line between customer relations, as I don't find it appropriate to talk about your life story and begin to whip your mobile phone out and show everyone your children.

Hi. We visited once the Gingeroot Restaurant in August 2014. We were greeted by the owner who found a table for us. We ordered one starter and one main course to share. We had lamb with rice. It was very delicious and very well cooked! The only one small drawback is the fact that there was not many meat pieces in the meal. The service was very kind and an Indian waiter reccomended us a nice dessert. I'd love to visit the Gingeroot restaurant again!

We went here on a Saturday and arrived at 2. On arrival the place was empty and we asked if they were serving food. We were told yes, and given some menu's, on the menu's it stated the place was open for lunch until 2.30 so we were fine for time. Once seated we were asked for our food order, to which I replied I would like a couple of minutes and was told 'the kitchen is closing' I insisted on a couple of minutes so I could look. We order a lamb balti, chicken korma for my daughter and the special for my partner, chicken pakora and chicken jalfrezi. The chicken was completely inedible, like rubber - quite positively the worst we have ever had - we told the waiter, he offered to bring more which was definitely not what we wanted, especially knowing that by this time the chef almost positively would have left! All in all, not a nice place, not great service, and the worst indian food we have eaten - and we have eaten and travelled a lot!Would not go back.

He was very rude and said "people like you come here all the time"...not too sure what he was referring to there but he was not one bit nice. Not worth the bother!

My boyfriend I came to Belfast for a few days and were looking for somewhere close to our hotel to eat. Gingeroot was recommended to us by staff at our hotel. When we arrived at around 6.30pm the restaurant was completely empty, bar two members of staff.Despite the lack of atmosphere, our meal was fabulous - and the staff were friendly and attentive. When our bill arrived, we were surprised to see they had added a charge for water. We hadn't actually even asked for the water so slightly perplexed by the addition to the bill since it was brought over to the table. Overall a great meal which deserved 5 stars if it wasn't for the foreign object on our bill.

The offer they had for valentines night three courses and bottle of wine for £38 sounded good. Firstly let me just say some (not all of the staff) are aloof bordering on rude to say the least. When we arrived and were waiting our table a female member of staff carrying plates rammed directly into my husband and did not apologise. This was a sign of things to come. We were seated in a corner and it became obvious that we were forgotten abiut. It took thirty minutes for the food order to be taken and when an hour went by without any food whatsoever not even poppadoms that were on everyone else's table my husband went to see what was going on. Within minutes of this they brought out poppadoms 'to keep us going' and within minutes of that our starter was served. It was obvious to us both that they had just thrown it together as you could see the holes in the meat were they pulled it off some ones kebab. I have attached a pictute. Further more from my vantage point I could see that the majority of the diners ate of that set menu and were served individual starters with dipping sauces not one plate of meat with holes in it. The meat in the starter tasted vile. We hoped the main courses were better. Both chicken Jalfrezis were ok not great. The sauce had a pool of grease on it and there were only a few tiny pieces if chicken. I likened it to a supermarket microwave value meal. The nann bread was ok as was the wine. The restaurant itself was decorated for valentines night and they had some dj playing cheesy tunes right beside us. I noticed that the owner was doing the rounds job nobbing with some of the diners yet never came near us. Upon leaving my husband who never complains explained everything to the owner. The response? He offered £2.50 off the bill....that says it all really. My husband told him to keep it as he obviously needs 2.50 more than we do. I predict this place will be closed this time next year if this is the way they treat new paying customers. I shall be telling the world and his wife yo avoid this Fawlty towers restaurant.

There are mixed feelings about Gingerroot. The positives include the fact that the staff are very nice and the restaurant is clean and modern. It's location to the city centre is good. Some of the dishes were very nice too. However, the service was very slow to say there were only 4 tables occupied and that sadly added to the poor atmosphere. On a busy night it might be better but not sure how they cope serving when it's busy? Some of the dishes were poor. My friend had a salmon curry? They warned there might be bones in it but it was full of them. They had made no effort to take any out. The portions are small and expensive. Watch out because they accidentally put an extra main course on our bill. To boot they add 10% service charge?Overall disappointing!

Whay a lucky find, we were met with a large asian family just leaving, (I know it's cliched, but if they go there it must be good), and it was, we were made to feel very welcome by (I assume the owner) and his very attentive staff, he advised us on our choice of food, catering for all our differing tastes. We thought so highly of the fare, went back the next nite, again very late, so indulged in some different appetizers, but had same tea, two cups to be exact. This time we had dessert, some wonderful ice cream. The owner and his staff were just wonderful. Very friendly and quite gracious. The restaurant had Wi-Fi, which my daughter used. A short walk from town centre and the university quarter, Gingeroot was very busy the (Friday) night we went there. We got a table by the window, which offers a scenic view of the street and was lighter than the rest of the restaurant. The food quality was good and the portion size was reasonable. The prices were as expected for this region of Europe but still not overly dear for what we ate. Appeared to be very popular with locals and several tables had romantic couples and groups of mature students chatting over a hearty meal. The older staff appeared to be in charge and checked on several occasions that we were happy & that the food was OK/enough. The traditional Indian style food beat any I'd had in London (which is often sadly westernised for British tastes).

I was coaxed out to this restaurant for a "Bollywood Night" - £15.00 all you can eat buffet, Bollywood dancing and disco into the small hours. My friend and I arrived at 7.30pm and we were the only people there. The food had not been set out at that stage. By 8.00pm the food was available and everyone could help themselves. I have never eaten in an Indian restaurant before so I had nothing to compare it to other than a Chinese buffet I had been to once before. I noticed that my options were limited. There was not much of a choice for a buffet (either Tikka Masala or Rogan Josh). In saying that the Tikki Masala was really delicious, as too was the naan bread. There was only one type of dessert, which I didn't try, but my friends didn't seem to like it (most of the dessert was left). The staff were attentive and always made sure you had enough drink. We had to ask for water during our meal and we were brought 2 large jugs for the table...the food was hot! As there were quite alot of children in the restaurant they tended to commandeer the little dancefloor at the top of the room. It felt like a creche at times. It was only when my friend hit the floor with her Zumba moves that the kids eventually moved! There were a few flat screen TVs on the walls showing the Bollywood Bang Bang Channel which did help get you into the party mood. The staff were all beautifully dressed in Saris and were trying to encourage people to get up and dance but as I was stone-cold sober it just was not happening for me.All in all I enjoyed the food and the company I was with but if I was asked to pay £15 again for the same night I would pass next time.

When it comes to Indian restaurants I want good food, swift friendly service in an ambiance akin to the east. I got all of that last night. We were served by charming Asian ladies in traditional dress as piped music from out east oozed out from the sound system and the food was delicious. Handy for the trains and buses too.

I went early evening as part of a group of five for a pre-theatre meal so it was at a quiet time . Everybody thoroughly enjoyed their starters and main courses. We found the portions to be just about right - enough to fill you without leaving you feel bloated. The service wasn't slow but they did take their time which we appreciated as it let us have the opportunity to chat properly and enjoy our drinks too. I don't enjoy service that is too fast. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We came to Gingeroot on recommendation. It is possibly the best Indian meal I've ever had. The portions weren't huge but sufficient. It was so tasty I could have eaten double. It is hard to judge it on atmosphere as it was a midweek visit so it was very quiet and the service was very slow. Too slow for a quiet evening but luckily we were in no hurry. I did think the lack of complimentary popadoms on arrival was a drawback as I've never been to an Indian which didn't offer these. Overall a pleasant enjoyably experience.

Great food, but felt the service was somewhat lacking. A party of Indian locals arrived and I was largely ignored, having to get up and go to the bar to ask for more wine, for the desert menu, to place the desert order, and for the bill!

this restaurant was recommended to me do I was ling forward to a nice meal. the food I eventually got was nice, I think buy can't be sure because I was given the wrong meal which killed my taste buds. I asked for a very mild bhuna and was given one that made me sweat after one peice of chicken. I will love the restaurant its dues they did realise and replaced it. once I finished my meal I asked for the bill and whilst I was paying for it was sskef where is the tip. needless to say I only give tips in the UK for good service. givingthe wrong meal does not qualify good service. I can honestly say I will probably not be back here.

I was at Gingeroot with my partner on a Friday evening after work (27 April 2012) - we often treat ourselves to a nice Indian meal after a hard week's work and we thought we'd try somewhere different. Although the staff were lovely, the location in Belfast is sadly quite derelict in the current economic climate, the restaurant was empty and cold and there was no atmosphere - no background music, TV on in the background. We have been lucky to enjoy some lovely Indian meals, unfortunately this wasn't one. I ordered my favourite - chicken tikka pathia. This is traditioanlly a hot dish, however I was advised that it was served mild, but it could be adjusted to my preferred heat. Therefore there chilli was added before serving - the heat therefore was not an integral part of the dish, more an afterthought, and that's how it felt and tasted when I was eating it. My partner had a very bland chicken dhansak. This was a really disappointing experience. In terms of cost, we were charged for poppadoms and condiments the overall cost was not what we would consider to be good value.Sorry Gingeroot - we won't be back.

We live in Edinburgh so cannot pop into this restaurant everyday so try to use it when we are over there. We had our first visit to this restaurant last year (OCTOBER 2011) when we found it in booklet, Belfast in your pocket, and at that visit we had a very enjoyable meal, hence why we returned on this visit (March 2012)However, this time we thought that the service had gone downhill. Maybe, it was, because it was a Monday night and usually a quiet night. However, we were served by what I assume was the owner/manager as he was there when we last visited but at that time he stayed in the background.I was surprised to be served by what I took to be the owner/manager and his lack of care for his customers. There did not appear to be any waiters/servers on duty. I got the impression that we had to hurry up and make a decision. For example, I asked him, which of the menu list was the spiciest and his answer was they all are. I again advised him that I like my food hot and spicy but my wife does not. I got a reply we can make them all hot, very hot or extra hot. We had just spent 14 hours travelling from Edinburgh followed by a hospital visit and this was our first break since 0615hrs that morning so all we wanted was a meal and his advice. This did not suit my wife so we eventfully agreed to go for the standard meal and add a bit of spice extra to my meal.If his attitude had been applied to his staff they would be lucky to in a job tomorrow. It was not what he did but more about how he went about it.We did enjoy the meal but thought we lost the ambiance of this restaurant. We will revisit this restaurant again on our next visit and give it another chance as I hope this was just a bad Monday night. The meal itself was fine and I have no faults with it. However a night out in a restaurant is not just about the meal itself. It is, or should be a night out.We did not go out for a meal and then wait while manager/owner consumes his own meal. We then had to wait and eventually call him for our bill.John Adams

I posted a review of this restaurant before so when we found ourselves back in Belfast the night before the St Patrick's day parade we thought we'd revisit it because we'd been telling everyone about it since. We went very early in the evening this time (in fact, they hadn't even turned the 'closed' sign to 'open') Again the staff were very courteous and we had a little dish of Bombay mix with our drinks. We selected a range of dishes to share to share between my husband, myself and our two children (11 & 13) including chicken biryani, chicken madras, tarka dhal, Bombay potato, garlic naan & paratha. When asked how spicy we would like the food, my husband said that the children well used to Indian food, so they could handle it pretty spicy. Boy did he regret that comment when he took the first mouthful of his Madras. In fact, we were all sitting there with red faces and watering eyes for a while as it really was quite hot. We couldn't stop laughing when my son said it had taken him a minute to eat a piece of chicken but five to recover! However, as he said later, even though that dish was spicy it was so tasty that he kept eating it once it had cooled down a bit physically. I loved everything, but it just goes to show you have to be careful when ordering Indian food. I overhead someone at the next table say to their partner, 'I hope ours isn't as hot as theirs.' But, yes, the food really is lovely in this restaurant. There isn't really much of an atmosphere but that was probably because it was so early.

I had been here before but they had just had a new floor laid and the place stunk of glue, so I thought I'd give it another go. The place was quite empty, even for a Wednesday night, but at least I got a choice of table! I disagree about the "extensive menu" comment from one of the reviews, for me it was the opposite. If they hadn't have separated the three meats into their own lists it would have been tiny. The poppadoms were 60p each and then the chutneys/pickles were either £1.50 EACH, or £2.75 for the four pot thing. I've seen this before in city centre restaurants and it really irritates me. What irritated me more however was when the owner came over and, without checking, assumed that I wasn't mixing the pickles/chutney - which I always do. Without asking me, he tried to show me how I should mix the pickles! I had to hold my hand up to stop him. When the main course came the sauce had a watery soup-like consistency and tasted as though they'd used an Asda curry powder to make it. When the owner came over and asked if it was good, I just couldn't help myself and told him "no".To his credit he immediately went to the kitchen and got another dish prepped in about 5 minutes with a thicker sauce and this was really nice.I think that maybe they were trying to do "authentic" indian food, which I do not have a problem with - I've been to a few places that do it and they've been great. What I don't like is a tasteless soup instead of a proper (ok, anglicised) curry sauce! Also, it wasn't cheap. The bill for 2 poppadoms and pickles, a chicken Jalfrezi and egg rice and a pint and half of cobra was £21.40OK, for a city centre reastaurant maybe this is average, but this place is not in the centre, just on the side of a main road in a slightly dodgy area.

There is much that is good about this restaurant - starting with the little bowl of spicy peas that were put on the table when I arrived. Service was generally efficient and pleasant without being at all pushy (although I would have had a desert had anyone asked me whether I wanted one). Poppadums were fresh, and the lime pickle that came as part of the pickle set was very good and seemingly home-made. Like a previous reviewer I thought the separate charge for the pickles was quite steep - especially for a lone diner - but it was clearly set out on the menu. Roti were also fresh and crisp, clearly straight from the tandoor, and spinach bhaji was tasty if overcooked (which is all too easy with spinach). The ginger-flavoured rice was interesting and pleasant. But sadly lamb jalfrezi was a stew of rather indeterminate and tastless meat that could have been lamb, mutton, beef or whatever; with a sauce that had no distinctive flavour. I should have been warned by the menu which suggested that spring onions had been substituted for the fresh chillis that should garnish this dish - although in fact neither chillis nor spring onions were evident. When the waiter asked "if everything was alright" I asked him in turn if he really wanted my opinion on the food - or just for me to say yes it was fine, thanks. I was not surprised that it was the latter.Perhaps I'm spoilt, coming from London where the Indian food is the best to be had, but I did not find that Gingeroot lived up to the generally good things that I had heard about it.

We went mid week to try the early bird menu, 3 courses for £11.95 and to compare with Jharna. The food is top notch and no complaints and nice to be asked how hot you want your dish. I went for Madras heat with a warning that Vindahloo might be too hot but actually i think i could have gone for the hottest.Good VFM and a very good VFM wine list with a reasonable sauvignon blanc at 11.95. However they do charge nearly £4.00 for the 2 poppadoms/chutneys on the table whilst at Jharna (and many other Indian restaurants) they are complimentary so price-wise there is really nothing between Jharna and Gingeroot for the early bird. The ginger ice cream was nice but the mango didnt taste of anytthing recognisable, certainly not Mango.I would certainly go back to try the full menu as there is most things at 8 or 9 pounds for a main. I am not one for normally leaving bad reviews but after the service that my friend and I both received last night, I felt I had no choice. This wasn’t my first time at The Naz but unfortunately after last night, it will be my last. So where do I start, myself and my friend had booked a table for the 2 of us, only to arrive and find a table of around 10 men sitting behind us who were shouting so much that we couldn’t hear ourselves think or speak. Now I am all for going out and having a good loud laugh with your mates but there is a time and a place, and The Naz is certainly not it. We politely asked the waiter to see if they could do something about the noise and the request was laughed at and ignored basically! Then another waiter came over to inform us that my friend’s order had been served to another table, instead of offering to cook her up the same meal and apologise for the wait time, he just told her to take a completely different meal. Then when we had just about finished our meal, we were then asked to move to another table as they wanted to use our table for another booking, do bear in mind this was still within our 2 hour booking. All in all it was not a great experience , especially when you work all week, and look forward to a nice relaxing Indian and wine on a Friday night. Fair to say it was far from relaxing last night, as we both left with thumping headaches!
