Food and service were excellent. The roasts we had were delicious with a great selection of vegetables. We're both shielding & felt very safe. Great attention to covid protection measures - plenty of distance between tables, use of handgel etc. Staff wore shields, but still maintained a friendly and helpful manner Will definitely book again.

Love this place the service is 5 star. All staff are so welcoming and attentive. The food is amazing, this is not the first time I have eaten here and I have never been disappointed. The only issue is I never have room for 3 courses making choosing difficult as there are such great dishes on the menu.

I decided to visit this restaurant after reading the good reviews on TripAdvisor. This traditional family run hotel is quite old fashioned looking, decorated in a strange mixture of styles, but the service and food were very good. I could have eaten any of the choices on the three course set menu for £26 and all the food we saw served looked very good. It’s a great place to take an extended family including grandparents who would like the traditional options on the menu. We enjoyed our starters - prawn cocktail, homemade chicken liver parfait and cheese and spinach stuffed mushrooms - and there was a nice choice of four different types of bread served before. The roast dinner options were very tasty with a good selection of veg - two different types of potatoes, roast carrot parsnips and sweet potatoes and a separate bowl of mixed steam veg. Food was hot, tasty and served by polite and friendly staff. Excellent value for money. Not a place for a romantic meal for a young couple - but there were plenty of families and older couples obviously enjoying their lunch.

Firstly I would like to say how lovely it was to be greeted by name by the waiter, who sat us down with our menus in the lounge, and got our drinks. The service was excellent throughout. The food was fine, large portions . Bit suprised when the chef came out to speak to people he obviously knew,as he did not have a hat on ,very dirty oven cloth and apron.I know you can get a bit untidy behind the scenes but surely you should tidy up before coming out into the restaurant

We planned a birthday celebration. Diane was very helpful with menu choices for 3 courses. We had 4 or 5 choices for each of 3 courses and pre-ordered. We had a nice welcome. We had our own bar. The tables were nicely laid out and we sat down punctually at 1pm. The food was great. Everyone commented upon how much they enjoyed what they had. The service was friendly and timely. The decor is a little tired but it didn’t detract from the experience. Nice garden.

No LEDs, no smoked glass, no eating off of stainless-steel coconut shells. Instead you get a comfortable rooms, reasonable seating, good service, well cooked food, and a lovely building - decor attempting to be well suited to its build-date. We were a large group on a freezing Sunday lunchtime in February - so I want to return for an evening, and/or when their a la carte is available. All in all a super place, such a nice change after the chains that get used.

We selected Gilbeys at the Liston Hotel for our pre-Christmas group meal on recommendation. We were not disappointed. From the initial contact with Diane Gilby, the family support whilst she was away to the meal itself; the experience was a really good one.Menu choices were flexible but catered for different tastes and requirements. It is not that usual to have a choice of 4 or 5 for each course for a group meal ... and as it turned out, all great quality and flavours. There were 22 of us, but with only two serving staff the meals came out at the same time, promptly, unobtrusively and tied into our drink requests too.Well done to them and the kitchen staff! The starter of Baked Cheese Souffle was a particular hit. The lamb in terms of taste and quantity was equally appreciated, as was my sea bass with cepes and a chive butter sauce and the vegetarian option of wild mushrooms in thyme and madeira cream sauce. Perhaps the deserts did not quite match the other two courses but at £27.50 per head, we were not about to be upset. We had the restaurant dedicated just to our group and with subtle background music, tasteful decorations and a welcoming bar with a real fire; this made for a lovely ambience and great atmosphere.Certainly one for the 'must-return-to' list.

The themed evening was a 4 course meal accompanied with fine wines from Bordeaux. It was excellent. The atmosphere is always convivial and welcoming and the glass of Dulong Cremant Rose on arrival got the evening off to a good start. The four courses were expertly cooked with excellent presentation. Every mouthful was delicious. The accompanying wines complemented the food expertly and information was supplied on the table and by verbal presentations. We have signed up to their email database as we really look forward to another themed event. We have also enjoyed Sunday lunch at Gilbeys. The meat was tender, full of flavour and delicous. The vegetables were plentiful and as a family dining experience, it was great. Haven fallen in love with this restaurant last year we are now on their mailing list for special themed events. I was delighted to receive one such email recently which coincided with special visitors. We were not disappointed; in fact the restaurant, the staff and the chef excelled themselves. The evening was a 7 course taster menu and came with an additional option of a recommended wine selection with each course. The food was simply gorgeous and the service was faultless - the best I have experienced in Bournemouth; and I would particularly like to highlight Jackie (I believe that was her name) who served the wine selection options to our table and was delightful. If I was to be super super picky the only slight problem for me was that the wine tasting glasses were of such a size that unfortunately by the time the dessert wine and the port arrived I unfortunately could not do them justice and felt a little deprived of the full experience; which is probably more my own fault for not asking for smaller glasses / drinking all of each glass that arrived. You excelled yourselves again guys and I'm looking forward to the next special evening.

We went to Gilbey's for Father's Day Sunday lunch. We received a friendly welcome and were seated in the bar to wait for our table, where we were served drinks and then perused the menu. There was a special Father's Day set menu; lots of choice, and it all looked delicious. The decor is Edwardian and it was a very pleasant place to relax in. We stepped out into the garden for a minute; it is delightful. After 10 minutes we were shown to our table. The dinning room is light and airy, and the painted mural on the walls is impressive. We were served bread before the starter; there was a wide selection of flavours to choose from. I had the olive bread, and it was fresh and very tasty. For the starter, my Dad and I had the scallop, prawn & pork belly. The scallop was the best I've ever had, and the pea puree was lovely. My fellow diners were also pleased with their cheese souffles. For mains, they had variations on the roast dinners, which were mostly enjoyable. I had the sea bass with fennel sauce and mushrooms; it was fabulous. I should mention that the staff at Gilbey's are brilliant; very friendly and always eager to help. We then shared puddings as we were very full! My partner and I had the chocolate brownie, which could be improved by adding a few scoops of vanilla ice cream, rather than one scoop of chocolate ice cream which was mostly chunks of chocolate; but this didn't spoil our experience at all. My Dad and his parter enjoyed their fruit sundae. I would definitely return for another occasion. Thank you Gilbey's for making my Dad's day all the more special.

We decided to visit after reading all the good reviews on Tripadvisor. We weren't disappointed. The service is excellent and the traditional Sunday roast was everything you'd expect and more, if I could find a criticism it would be the Yorkshire pudding wasn't a crispy as I like it but that's really splitting hairs. I would comment that the décor of the hotel is from another era (and so were most of the diners) so if you are looking for a modern style restaurant, this won't be for you. If you're looking for a very well cooked traditional Sunday lunch, this is one of the best I've had anywhere.

Hiding in The Liston Hotel between Bournemouth and Boscombe is an amazing restaurant. It was recommended to us and we've been twice before leaving a review, because sometimes the second visit lets you down. IT DIDN'T. What amazing food and wonderful service, it really is as good the second time. The first time we went with four friends down from London and all were very impressed, and they are used to top end London food. Fillet steak was well rested and perfectly cooked. Lamb was perfect, pigeon starter (never had it before and trust of the chef had set in for our second visit, so why not!) was lovely. There's a good choice of meat and fish dishes. All they ordered were perfect. Presentation is 5 star. We had free mini hors d'ouvres etc both times and superb attention from the staff and chef. OK this is not Michelin star, but it's close enough for a superb evening at a third of the price. (3 courses £35) you'll feel guilty only leaving a 10% tip.I've just read this weeks menu and wow! To have our welcome drinks in the beautiful gardens, and then to be shown to a beautifully light and well decorated room for lunch. The canapés were delicious and what followed was three courses of exceptional food. The lamb dish was tender, the chicken was roasted to perfection. Out of the 30-odd of our party there was not one complaint. Everyone was thrilled with the polite staff, the delicious food and the ambience. We retired after lunch for a few more drinks in the garden, and our only regret was that we had to leave to catch the train back to London. Id recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting value for money, attentive service and quality food.

Went to Gilbeys to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Chose it entirely due to great reviews on Trip Adviser. Have to say I was rather disappointed with the restaurant itself - it's joined on to an old-fashioned small hotel in the middle of Boscombe (not one I'd fancy staying in!). After approaching the restaurant through the fusty hotel we wondered what it would be like, and actually it was fine. We had a pleasant time with very nice food, presented beautifully and served by lovely staff. We were offered a seat in the dowdy-looking bar area to peruse the menus but chose to sit in the garden. This was much nicer - a pretty space with lots of flowers and white fairy lights. However, the garden is over-looked by a few blocks of flats (not the nicest looking) and it seemed a slightly strange place to have come for our meal. The decor of the restaurant was slightly strange too - murals of people along the walls etc. That said the service and food were very good indeed - we just couldn't shake off the odd feeling of being in a tired hotel. So if location, architecture, interior design etc are important factors in choosing a restaurant then I would discourage you from dining here. However if you're after good food and service at a reasonable price (3 courses for £35) then this is worth a try.

This is a true gem - from the canapé served in the delightful garden, to the faultless, attentive service and wonderful food. Gilbey's clearly has a chef who is passionate about the quality and preparation of his food. My husband I had returned to Bournemouth after many years and wanted to treat some friends who live here. After reading the rave reviews we decided to give it a try and were so glad we did. Our friends couldn't believe they hadn't discovered this place before. This is a Bournemouth restaurant that deserves its accolades. We have already rebooked.

Dined here recently, based on the many recommendations on this site and my only disappointment was the fact that we had not discovered this gem of a restaurant much sooner. We were greeted by attentive, friendly staff and enjoyed delicious canapés whilst browsing the menu. Both the food and the wine are reasonably priced and of exceptional quality. We enjoyed a relaxing evening and will most certainly return. I have one very minor point which did not detract from the dining experience; I thought that the ambience of the dining area could be improved by simply dimming the lights.

Thanks to Tripadvisor we found this restaurant at short notice and what a lovely find it was. Staff were very friendly and attentive without being "oily". Pre dinner drinks with canapés followed by an amuse bouche whilst awaiting the lovely starters then quite possibly the nicest fillet steak I have ever had (53 1/2 yrs so I have eaten a few steaks!). Drinks and wine very reasonably priced and very drinkable. I would recommend this restaurant - the food is exquisite. GBP 35 for three course. With pre dinner drinks and liqueurs total £110.

Fourteen of us celebrated granddad's 87th birthday at Gilbey's. We relaxed in the beautiful flower garden where the staff took our order and then moved into the seaside themed restaurant. The starters and main dishes were all good with plenty of extra Yorkshire puddings and fresh vegetables. The staff were charming and attentive throughout. We were slightly disappointed with the puddings and felt the selection, for instance, strawberries and cream or apple crumble and custard didnt quite live up to the rest of the menu. But the coffee was good! And altogether it was a great way to celebrate.

We visited Gilbey's after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor and were not disappointed. We went on a Saturday evening for an anniversary celebration and were welcomed by the lovely staff in the bar area outside the dinning room. While we tried to decide on which of the tempting courses to chose, we had some lovely aperitifs and nibbles. The 3 course menu is incredibly good value for money (£35) and the food was wonderful. We all had different starters and mains and one was more delicious than the other. The restaurant serves what I would describe as modern British food and has an extensive (yet again very moderately priced) wine list to match the lovely dishes. Our waiter recommended some nice wines to go along with our food and all the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout the evening. We had a wonderful time and were really pleased to have discovered this little gem in the heart of Bournemouth. We will certainly return when we are next in town.

We dined here last week and enjoyed it very much. The set menu which includes canapés, bread and an amuse bouche is wide ranging and imaginative and includes expensive items like scallops and fillet steak. Presentation was exemplary and portion sizes just right. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. The wine list was reasonably priced and included several good wines by the glass. This was a very pleasant experience.

My husband and I saw the good reviews on trip advisor so thought we'd check it out for a Sunday roast. We were not disappointed at all. Firstly we asked whether we could take our 3 month old son Luke and this was not a problem at all. We were warmly greeted on arrival, taken to a nice seating area where we ordered a couple of drinks. I'm not a big drinker and I was driving so I appreciated that there were 'mocktails' on the menu. I loved that we could sit down first, have a drink and a chat then look at our menu and order before we went into the restaurant, it certainly made us feel much more relaxed. There was more than enough room for our pram and the restaurant was very nicely decorated. The waiting staff could not do enough for us and Diane the owner was charming, helpful and very welcoming. It's been such a long time since we've both eaten a meal like this and I feel i've finally found a chef who cares about the quality, taste and appearance of the food. The chicken liver parfait was divine, my husband had the double baked goat's cheese soufflé which looked amazing on the plate and tasted just as good. For main I had the roast beef which melted in your mouth, and came with enough gravy (I do find other restaurants never give you enough gravy!), my husband had the pork belly which again was scrumptious and did not disappoint. I liked the fact that the vegetables and potatoes came in separate dishes left on the table for you to help yourselves with. Our puddings were very yummy too! The chef even came out and talked to us, something which rarely happens these days and it's something I very much appreciated. The food here is superb, the service excellent and I have to say all at a very reasonable price. Clearly this restaurant cares a huge amount for what they do and you can certainly see this when you come here. If anyone reading this review is thinking about going then all I can say is to please go as you will not be disappointed!

I have worked in hospitality most of my life, and I can hand on heart say this was one of the nicest meals I have ever had the pleasure of eating, in quirky but lovely surroundings, served by a small, but wonderfully attentive and caring staff. My partner and I had dined the night previously at an up market/ over priced restaurant in Edinburgh (The Witchery by the Castle - see previous review), and had been thoroughly disappointed by the lack of interest by the staff, and the bland dishes that they put in front of us. THANK THE STARS for Gilbeys and redeeming what was turning out to be a sad 30th!We arrived at the hotel and were sat at a table in the bar where a member of staff promptly furnished us with menus and took a drinks order. When the drinks have arrived and you've ordered (it might have been before we ordered) we were served with alittle dish of olives to nibble on, some lovely warm sesame seed, honey and soy chicken pieces, and cold melon soup samples. Mmmmmm - delicious!!!When our starters were ready we were shown to our table, and we were promptly served a little amuse bouche (i've no idea how to spell that!); of mussels in a creamy safron sauce - delightful! From that moment on the evening was a delicious mix of creamy sauces, sumptuous souffles, ravishing risottos and delicious duck dishes! As a party of 4 we all had to stop short of licking our plates - it is that delicious! I won't go into too much detail about the exact dishes we had, because they might not be there if you go - and I urge you to go, and go quickly before other realise how wonderful this little restaurant is, as I doubt it will stay Bournemouths best kept secret for long!Thank you to all the staff for making this birthday meal one to remember (and in a good way)! Next time we are in Bournemouth we will absolutley be coming back. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't believe this restaurant wasn't packed on a Saturday night! I hope that they keep on getting fabulous reviews as they absolutely deserve the praise and recognition for both the service and the food. Well done Gilbeys!

Disappointing is the best word to describe our Sunday lunch at Gilbeys. The food simply was not up to the standard we expected. Maybe the chef was having an off day, who knows. A flat, albeit quite tasty cheese souffle, followed by over cooked beef, watery gravy/sauce, underseasoned vegatables, the roast potatos were ok though. The creme brulee pretty much saved the meal, lovely consistency with plenty of raspberries and a wonderful biscuit on the side.We could not fault the service, however the overall quality of the food was no where near good enough, or close to what we have experienced in a certain other Bournemouth hotel's restaurant.

After 8 years away from Bournemouth we returned on 22nd February to eat at Gilbey's Further we stayed in one of the hotel's wonderful balcony rooms to fully enjoy our experience. Diane was as welcoming as ever and made us feel at home. Having spent the afternoon walking along the wind swept promenade into town and back we were ready for our dinner.Everything was as before..sewing machines and all! The staff were informed and attentive. The amuse bouche a delightful tid bit to nibble with our aperitifs. It is always difficult to decide on which of the well constructed and tantalising dishes to choose from. Our choices were excellently made and presented. I recommend the smoked mashed potato which was incredible. Home smoked too. The ratatouille was excellent served in Steve's signature small copper pan. We were greedy and went for the desserts too which was a course too far but had to be done. You will not be hungry eating at Gilbey's!It was a delight to return and find the same class act that Steve produces in his kitchen and we throughly recommend this restaurant to all especially discerning diners. Well done to all at Gilbey's and The Liston Hotel.

The welcome was warm, the hors d'oeuvres & amuse bouches were a real treat before we even sat down at our table. The menu worked for everyone, the food was excellent and the wine list did what we needed it to. Those looking after us made us feel as though they really appreciated our being there and the price was very reasonable. We're looking forward to returning when the weather improves so we can experience the terrace.

My wife was celebrating her latest birthday and as we had attended another occasion at the hotel which contains Gilbey's Restaurant a couple of months earlier, we decided to have dinner there and see what was on offer. Due to the day being mid-week, we were the only couple in the restaurant that evening, but the member of staff on duty could not have been more accommodating and attentive. From the moment we ordered a drink to start in the lounge, to the canapes and being presented with the menu, we were made very welcome. The meals were of the highest standard and we felt they compared to the very best meals we have enjoyed at another Bournemouth hotel in the past. During the main course, the chef came and asked how we were enjoying the cuisine, which was a nice touch. The quality of the food for all the courses was exceptional,as was the simple fact that the plates, where necessary, were very hot. Not something you have at all restaurants. The evening ended with coffee in the lounge. We were informed that the fog had descended again and we should take care as we drove home. Again, another care approach by the staff. We will be returning fo sample another meal in the not too distant future.

My wife and I have now visited Gilbey's 3 times whilst staying in Bournemouth. On Saturday 1st March we had a table booked for the evening. They do a fixed price 2 course dinner for £ 30 and 3 courses for £ 35. The wine list was very reasonably priced also. The menu is small but varied enough for any taste (The table next to us had called ahead and asked for a Vegan meal which they were given). The quality is 100%!The service from Lupe, Isaac and Steve was warm and efficient. At the end of the evening Jason, the chef, visited each table for feedback - a nice touch. As I have said in previous reviews don't be put off by the "Off the beaten Track" situation. It is close to town and seafront without being manic.

Having had lunch at Gilbey's a few times, I was prepared for dinner to be of a similar high standard but in fact it far exceeded expectations. This really is the best meal that I have ever eaten - at the end of each course I wanted to be able to go back to have it again but at the same time anticipating the next. I loved it all (photo of my dessert choice of passion fruit parfait). The restaurant staff really added to the enjoyment - unobtrusive but attentive and happy that we were happy. Fantastic value even without all the extras. Desperately trying to find an excuse to go back soon.

Visited Gilbeys on the 7th Feb while in the Boscombe area on a weekend break. Chose the restaurant based on the reviews on Tripadvisor and must admit most of them were spot on! The exterior of the hotel does not look appealing and we walked into a deserted entrance hall. However, the restaurant staff quickly came out to greet us and made us feel very welcome. We started with drinks and nibbles in the vintage bar. Menu looked lovely and when the food was served it was delicious. Turned out that we were the only people booked in that night (horrible wet & windy evening) which is a shame as the food was lovely, the wine reasonable priced and the serving staff very friendly and efficient. When the coffee came round, the chef came out and seemed genuinely interested in how we enjoyed the meal. Would definitely visit again!

We had been warned not to be put off by outward appearance of the hotel which is just as well as this could easily happen. Our greeting was welcoming and relaxing. The restaurant has character, the decor sets an unusual scene and table laid with white linen cloths and serviettes. Service was considerate and attentive. Food was well presented and tasty and certainly exceeded my expectations. Sunday lunch was great, good selection of fresh vegetables that were not over cooked and the meat was tender. The deserts were lovely with the exception of 2 out of the 3 trio of deserts. The trifle and creme caramel were bland. To their credit, the waitress picked up on the fact that not all the desert had been eaten and asked the reason why and responded well to our observation. The menu was mid price range. Would definitely go there again.

We booked in for the New Year Banquet Meal for a change as we normally end up trying to find somewhere last minute that is overpriced and bad quality. I can say that Gilbey's is neither! The waiting staff were very attentive and in my rush to book a table and the crisis of Xmas I forgot to mention that I was Gluten intolerant....it only came to light when the lovely homemade bread tray came round....not a problem some gluten free bread rustled up and toasted in minutes and then this was remembered for the cheese course and some rice crackers arrived! Amazing. Diane the hostess was most attentive and even managed to book us a taxi home (although it failed to show - shame on you Start Cabs) We had a fabulous evening with great wine, great food and even managed some dancing! I booked Gilbey's Restaurant this year for my Company Christmas meal mainly because of my Warehouse Managers aversion to the traditional style events usually held in a local hotel. Mass produced, low quality, food (turkey roll!!) and overpriced drinks, followed by a loud, birdy song/agadoo, playing Disco. Well, for probably the second time ever.. he was right. At Gilbey's we enjoyed some beautiful Crement de Alsace with canapes in the lounge area, before being invited through to our table in the restaurant. The whole, 4 course, meal was wonderful but a special mention must go to the Scallop dish that was served in a sauce within a pastry sealed shell. Hard to describe but gorgeous. Our favourite wines were the South African Grenache Blanc Viognier and the stunning Argentinian Cabernet Franc. The waiting staff were friendly, knowledgeable and very attentive. Despite our conversation going on 'til quite late we were not put under any pressure to leave. Thanks to everyone at Gilbey's for a Superb night out that I know my staff and I will remember for a long time. Sometimes it pays to spend a little bit more and do things with style.
