George's Restaurant in Southampton

AMAZING. Family run restaurant. I felt like I was in Cyprus or Greece. The wine was good, service friendly, and the food was phenomenal. Giant garlic prawns and lamb kleftiko. The whole shoulder of lamb, roast potatoes (kleftiko style), rice and salad was all speak fresh. The lamb fell off the bone. The restaurant was clean, spacious and I couldn't fault this place

Sadly we were in a hurry and did not have time to fully enjoy the food and service. We explained to Karen that we were going to a concert and. she ensured our food arrived quickly. My moussaka was delicious,meaty and with good bechamel sauce. My husbands souvlaki was tasty and plentiful and the chips were really hot. We will return

Haven't been here in 30 yrs, my wife and I went for valentines meal, as we discussed and wanted to choose a place where we used to go when we were young. Absolutely Fantastic, super staff, friendly atmosphere and very good food.

I’ve been to George’s a few times, and it’s always a good experience, tonight was no exception. I had the calamari and my girlfriend had the chicken kebab, both really good. The restaurant was very busy, and the waitress was rushed off her feet, but our food came quickly and served with a smile! So lovely to see an independent family run business doing so well!

We went here with a group of friends. The restaurant was recommended to us by a friend. On the surface you might think you might think it's nothing special. However, this place has been a Southampton staple since 1940. The main dishes are Greek but they do other types of food. I had the whitebail and moussaka while my partner had the calamari and George's special kebab. All the food was excellent quality and decent portion sizes. You also get portions of chips on the table. We had a couple of drinks and our bill came to £78 which I thought was decent. The restaurant was lively on a Saturday night with several big groups. It was quite noisy at times but made for a good atmosphere. Overall we were really happy with our night at George's and will look to go again.

We enjoyed a really great taste of authentic greek food. We started with olives & pitta bread & halloumi & lounza followed by delicious moussaka, souvlaki and bifteki, accompanied by a lovely fresh greek salad with feta, village salad and home cooked chips. All beautifully presented & tasted great. The service was also a highlight as very attentive & friendly. Would definitely recommend & we will be returning.

I used to go here years ago when George was still around, but now the standards have dropped unfortunately, I used to love the salad was very disappointed, the food was average no more than I'd expect from a pub menu at green king or hungry horse, of course it would have been alot cheaper there, so fact I spent over 60 quid on this I won't be going back again, which is a shame as I used to go there as a kid and even as my kids were growing, such a shame when good places let there standards slip

Very friendly place. Didn't have to wait to be seated. I have never had a Mixed Fish Grill and it was delicious. Food was served quite quickly even though they were busy.

Such a shame as we have wanted to go here for absolutely ages so so so disappointed food was awful bland absolutely no flavour at all A share bowl of chips which we thought really!!! Service was great if only they put as much effort into the food as they do the service. Not good value for money at all

George's restaurant it's excellent!! We been going there for more than 19 years and it just great. It was 8 of us this time and it's plenty of food choices. One of my mates is Vegan and he was served with a large dish mixed food.

Checked out their reviews and menu online beforehand. Received a warm welcome. Chose the mixed meze option with 14+ hot and cold dishes at £25 per head for my wife and I. The food was lovely and provided a wonderful selection of typical Greek food. The service we received from our waitress was exceptional. We will be returning to try out dishes from the main menu soon.

Our party of 6 friends had excellent dinners at George’s Restaurant. We came across it after we could not get into the Pig in Wall and Duke of Wellington. And we were so happy to have found this place!. Both the food and service was excellent with moderate prices for the food and drinks. They had a nice sized dinner crowd when we arrived. The restaurant is good size so our party of 6 was seated right away. We were staying at a hotel within walking distance waiting for our cruise ship. Next time we are in Southampton we will definitely return to George’s Restaurant.

First visit was ok service was good and the meals that came out looked ok. I did like my mates chicken in a peppercorn sauce. Had the mezze to share was looking forward to it after seeing previous post on google was a bit disappointed. Everyone else enjoyed it so it couldn’t be all bad.

Family owned restaurant, recipes and menu been the same since 1954 (I think). Food is great, worth a visit.

Warning! Do not come here unless you are really hungry!! Food was amazing, fresh and served piping hot! The Meze seemed never ending! Harriet was a delight and so happy smiley! A super meal, so worth the visit!

Really good menu, there's something for everyone. The staff are very friendly and the prices are reasonable.

We have just got back from a fabulous evening and an amazing meal for Grandad’s 85th Birthday. The service was exceptional Pete’s wife served us, so sorry can’t remember her name but she is a credit to the business. I had a fillet steak with salad and chips with George’s famous coleslaw and Cornish crab cakes from the specials starters board ( so good) would absolutely recommend a visit to this lovely, family run restaurant hidden down the bottom end of town.

Went for a friend's 50th meal. Food was amazing and reasonably priced. The staff were very busy but helpful and friendly making the experience a fun and happy time. Would recommend booking before going and worth your while.

LOVE this place! We have visited a few times with various friends and always the service and the food has been excellent. Its a great place to go with friends for a celebration, nothing is too much trouble. BEWARE - arrive within your time slot, they get very busy and understandably will turn you away if you are late.

We had a fantastic experience here for my grandmas birthday lunch we always come here on birthdays with a large table and the service is always fantastic, Harrietta is amazing she always looks after us and nothing is too much trouble for her. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. Thank you for making all our special occasions a great memorable experience.

To say I’m absolutely fuming with George’s Restarunt is an understatement !! We’ve been using this place for over 20 years as have most of the family. If there is an occasion George’s was the go to place … we were going so often at one point that when my wife was Pregnant one time they even done her take away of her favourite starter … but now I guess they don’t want the business. This weekend was supposed to be a special weekend for my youngest son. Back when he was younger he’d sit in there and eat the kids meatballs which were bigger than his head. Now he’s older and this was his delayed birthday weekend, and his first weekend home from the army in a long time. HIS choice of venue was to eat a George’s restaurant. I booked the table online for 18:30. I had a phone call from the restaurant to confirm our booking on the day, I even phoned them back to confirm the birthday part of it so logic says we were going to be there. Due to my sons train arriving late We arrived 13 minutes late to the restaurant to be told we could no longer have our table. What the hell !! The place was t busy and how does 13 minutes make a difference?? It’s a shame time moves on and the younger staff have no idea what loyalty means or even basic customer service for that matter. It’s a shame because the whole family have many many years of good memories here and now I have no desire to return to a place that doesn’t want my business. I’ll also be talking the rest of the family into finding a different venue for all future family events. Maybe George’s will continue as they have for a long time or maybe it’ll be run into the ground and disappear along with the original values this place held

Went here for a cousins 50th birthday. We booked a table for 14 of us. Harriet, our waitress, was amazing. She was the only one serving that evening & she was very accommodating, very polite & friendly. The food came out in good time & everything cooked to perfection. The restaurant has been going for many years, and we're so glad it's still in Southampton. Keep doing what you're doing! We will be returning!

It’s difficult to decide overall how to rate this place. On the one hand some dishes our party had were delicious and authentic. But on the other, some of the salads were bland and tasteless and didn’t seem to be made with decent ingredients. The service was very variable too. From a gruff unfriendly greeting to helpful and attentive at different points in the meal. The restaurant was super hot and the air con did not seem to be working. Overall I would say a very average experience reflecting highs and lows.

First time back to this wonderful place since early 2020...lovely atmosphere and always great service and food. Won't leave it so long next time

This restaurant is hidden right in the city centre of Southampton, you can't tell that it is a greek restaurant. We only knew this restaurant from a friend who recommended it to us. The food was lovely, but I feel like they can do more of the traditional Greek food. The menu is more Italian than greek to me. Also the restaurant can feel a bit seclusive when you're inside, I think it would be good if they open it up a bit, like put chairs and tables outside for people to sit, especially during summer when it's sunny and warm. However, customer service was good.

Lovely staff, fantastic food, very traditional restaurant. We had our wedding reception there 10 years ago and it was absolutely perfect. It was lovely to go there again on our trip back to the uk visiting family.

It was very quiet there when we went on a Friday night. I ordered a 'Chicken Maryland'- it was the weirdest combination of food items I have ever experienced and the menu didn't explain what it was properly. The carbonara my friend had looked OK though. The service from the staff was good though.

Visited George’s on a Friday evening. When the table was booked we were told that there was a big booking for a party around the same time. We arrived a little early but were seated within a few minutes. The restaurant was super busy and there must have been nearly twenty-five people along one table for the party. However, even thought the staff had a busy restaurant and a massive booking to take care of, they were all absolutely brilliant. They were always smiling, friendly, and attentive. Great service. We had warm pitta and tzatziki to start and it was so good. I couldn’t decide what to have (I was torn between a few things) so I asked about the menu, and the bifteki was recommended. I am so pleased I went for it in the end because it was delicious. It was really succulent and tasty. The salad it came with was also delicious. My girlfriend had calamari and really enjoyed it, and my mum said the moussaka was amazing. Had a great evening in George’s, excellent food, excellent service, looking forward to my next visit already.

We loved this restaurant, it was centrally located near the High Street in the Old Town area and was bright and lovely and the food was fantastic, prepared fresh and so delicious. It's run by a very friendly, kind family and the father and daughter work working last night and made our visit so special. I highly recommend for Greek dishes as well as the Italian and the portions are generous.

Went for a last minute lunch today. The spaghetti bolgnese I have been eating there for 35 years was just perfect, wife had a giant old school cooked breakfast which fully hit the spot with some of the classic George's chips. Lovely service attentive, polite and unintrusive. Bill was twenty sheets for enough food to feed probably three people, but we made a dent in it! Still my go to comfort food place and all these years on would recommend to anyone. Southampton's premier old school Greek place and will fight anyone who tells me otherwise. Thanks guys.

Last Sunday evening during the final reunion of my old shipping company 60 of us arranged to have dinner at George's restaurant. In fact 63 turned up, but they coped. 60 of us had pre-ordered, but many forgot what they had ordered, but they coped....

We went to George's as we enjoy Greek food but it was very disappointing. My Souvlaki was cooked so much that it was dry and tough. I have to say that the service was very good but the evening was a disappointment.

Love this place, we are happy it’s back after the pandemic. Truly the best of its kind, food is so fresh and tasty and amazing value for the size of the portions you get. This time we had lunch offer and it was £23 for 2 huge meals and coffee and tea! Peppercorn pork fillet and chicken kebab wrap. Highly recommend to everyone!

This is by far the best Greek restaurant I have visited. The staff are a delight. Genuinely friendly and helpful. The food is perfect and the price is good! My friend and I both had the T-bone steak and it was so tasty. His wife and mine had liver and bacon from their special board! They love it so much that they only order that everytime we go!
