George Street Fish & Chip shop in Argyll & Bute

Went to Oban for Easter weekend March 2024 in the caravan and we arrived late so went into town and we found this chip shop in George Street where you could sit in and I promise you it is the best fish n chips I have EVER had and the service was amazing the staff were so welcoming and friendly I would definitely 100% recommend it. Also I had a wee cheeky wine with it too. Thank you to all the staff in there. X sorry no.pics 😞

We had our lunch at this fabulous fish restaurant. Even though they were short of staff but they still managed to pull it off with the fantastic service throughout and outstanding quality produce food had on offer. I had a young lassie who originally came from poland, she is absolutely lovely and very welcoming and always has a smile on her face which makes our dining experience even more enjoyable. We both had the Haddock fish tea special which was the best fish and chips I ever tasted in Scotland. I highly recommend this restaurant to everybody. Thank You George Street Fish Restaurant.

We are staying in Oban for a couple of days and came in here to avoid the rain but - O.M.G. The food is amazing!!!! We shared appetisers - salt & pepper squid and the scallops and chorizo. We shared scampi and chips then I caved and had the sticky toffee pudding - honestly the best ever and Olga our server was fabulous

Went here for dinner after touring the Oban distillery. Wonderful fish and chips. Welcoming and friendly service. Fish - we had the haddock - was fresh and light. Chips were perfect.

This review for the chip shop only as didn’t eat in the restaurant. The fish and batter tasted amazing as did the haggis. Am aware there are at least another 2 chip shops in Oban but would happily eat here again and again.

My husband and I both had the haddock and chips with a pot of tea and fresh brown buttered bread. The fish and chips were excellent- expertly cooked and beautifully presented. In fact they were the best we’ve had in a long time. The fresh tartare sauce was delicious. We were served by a lovely attentive lady. The atmosphere was cosy on a cold Oban winter’s day. We’ll be back when we visit Oban again in March.

Enjoyed a takeaway from this very good chippy in Oban. Chips, spring rolls, peas all great, my wife's cod was a bit tough, disappointing when the price of fish is so high. Still, as I'm not a fish eater, I would definitely return!

This is a lovely shop to get some fish and chips or some nice fried sausage. The people were working very quick and were respectful. It is mostly a take away shop.

Had a large haddock had to try it must be good for £18, don't bother dreadful,the fish was very greasy under the batter try somewhere else,not very good.

This is some of the best fish and chips we have eaten. Really excellent food. We came here one day and came back the next day. We couldn't get enough.

I phoned to check on the Menu; on 12/10/23. I have to say the person who answered the phone was rude, argumentative, and basically a nasty piece of work.....Judging by that alone I am sure the staff attitude reflects the attitude of the chip-on-the-shoulder owner. The food may be amazing (I don't know) but I don't like to be treated like something off the bottom of his shoe. Advice for Mr Nasty I am not just a cash cow for you I pay you good money earned through my hard work you have lost at least £400 for my 8 family members I asked you nicely to prepare a meal; I was nothing but polite to you I don't need a lecture.

This is our go to restaurant on arrival to Oban. It never disappoints, food is delicious, staff are friendly and the music and atmosphere always delights us, love it.

We were happy with the food and the welcome, as well as the cheerful banter from the lady serving us. The teo other tables downstairs seemed to radiate the same warmth, great given it was howling what felt like a veritable gale outside. A group of Dutch visitors couldn't decide whether to stay or not, left and came back to eat upstairs anyway. As a Dutch speaker I understood they too were very happy, 'nuff said for us...

On holiday near the Glencoe area. Had chips from this fish and chip shop in Oban, very expensive and the ‘large’ portion of chips was far from that. The chips resembled something frozen that had been cooked in your oven. Would not waste your money

Firstly the food is fabulous, loads on the plate. The staff were all super friendly, attentive, full of knowledge and with a terrific sense of humour. I will definitely visit the next time I'm up in Oban. Thank you ladies x

Overpriced for small portions (of the 24.95 mixed grill). Overcooked and not even lightly seasoned. If they didn’t serve the plate 3/4 full of chips, I would have left very hungry. But - the servers were excellent and we enjoyed them. The management and kitchen staff blew this one. I wouldn’t recommend eating here.

Really excellent fish and chips. Not cheap, but hey - good things cost money, right? The real treat was the house made tartare sauce. Only £1, and it was the best I’ve had in a long time. Most commercial tartare sauce is too sweet, and really not much more than mayo with a few chopped gherkins. Whoever made this stuff knows what they’re doing!

Best fish we have had all week on touring holiday. My haddock was great, batter light, chip excellent! My wife had mixed grilled fish .. Very good, although bones in the salmon would not work for me! Very nice young man from Edinburgh served us, and made me feel at home!! And Fyne beer was delish!!

Was in Oban after a trip to the Isle of Mull and we all fancied some fish and chips. A quick search on TripAdvisor pointed us to this Fish and Chips bar and we wasn’t disappointed. Clearly a popular local judging by the constant stream of people visiting. We opted for 4 x battered cod and chips take away then went to their nearby bench area to enjoy with spectacular views of the harbour. When we opened the boxes the fish was a decent size we probably could have halved the fish for the kids as portion was a bit too large for them. Chips were tasty and fish batter was light and not too heavy. Price was around £12 for cod and chips which is probably what you would expect to pay these days for good quality fish and chips. Overall I would recommend this place to anyone visiting who fancied some seaside fish and chips. They also batter everything from battered haggis to battered black pudding, white pudding and red pudding if you like your stuff fried in batter.

At nearly £17 for Haddock and chips,clearly catering for the tourist market,service was bizzare to say the least,waitress was struggling to explain on the tradition of Scottish fish and chips etc,fish was fine but portions not enough! It’s not for me but food was fresh!

Been to this chip shop several times over the years 2018 was the last time until August 2023, the food used to be really nice. I don't know if it has changed ownership since 2018, but this is not the same quality as it used to be, price was a bit expensive aswell for the scrappy chips.

Had a sit in meal consisting of cod and chips. Fish was perfectly cooked and tasted lovely, chips were light and fluffy. Washed down with a glass of wine, perfect! Only chippy been to that has a cocktail menu 😃. Scored slightly down on atmosphere as the music was terrible 😆

Good fish and chips and some of the other dishes excellent (langoustines, scallops and chorizo). What slightly let this down was the very slow service. The waiting staff were great but it felt they were somewhat frustrated - it seems the busy kitchen was prioritising take away orders over sit down diners.

Wir waren hier zum Abendessen. Das Essen an sich war in Ordnung, allerdings kann die Tellergestaltung etwas besser sein. Es machte einen etwas lieblosen Eindruck. Das Personal war sehr freundlich und um unser Wohlbefinden besorgt. Das Restaurant macht einen gepflegten aber einfachen Eindruck. Wenn unten voll ist, nicht verzagen. Pretty good, had the haddock supper, the batter was a bit slimy and fell off the fish, and the salt and vinegar was only applied to the fish, not the chips. Otherwise fine, some of the chips were almost crispy.

Ordered a scallop & chorizo appetizer which was remarkably delicious. Perfect balance of spices. The main dish was a selection of fish, squid, prawns all fried perfectly. A pint of beer made it just right.

This is a strange one. Never have I felt like the servers, every one, didn't want to be there. There is something off in the culture of this staff. The food was good, but because the staff give off a vibe of being unhappy, I was happy to leave. Management needs to address this.

I had the best languistines from Oban which were simply presented by friendly staff with a nice glass of wine. The choice of fish is very good and carry outs are available next door.

Batter on cod was worst I,ve ever had. Very soggy. No crispness at all. A waste of a nice piece of cod. There are plenty other places that do much better. Don't waste your money or appetite. Ugghh!

While the portion of chips was large, they were soggy and greasy. The fish, a cod was battered but the batter was not crispy and 1 and half fillets. Since we are all aware there's two fillets on a fish, chip shops ripping of public at 1.5 fillets. The cost of a take away fish and chips, normal was £9.75, rather expensive for not great quality and cut back on the fish. That said, it filled a space. Having not had a fish supper for a while and really looking forward to enjoying it in the self professed "sea food capital of Scotland" it was very disappointing and I certainly wouldn't rush back.
