Such a great place! Really friendly and helpful staff, nice and chilled environment and such good quality of coffee and food. We only had a brownie and croissant with our drinks but we’re very envious as others had their food brought to them!

Stayed in Stormont Hotel and walked down here for breakfast. Amazing. Lovely pleasant (not over friend;y) professional staff. Best porridge I have ever eaten. My husband had a “build your own” which, by all accounts, was delicious!

I've been coming to GM for the last 4 years, the food never disappoints. I'm a sucker for the huevos rotos but have eaten lots of other smashing dishes. Make sure you save some room for a bun after as the PB balls, salted caramel brownie and Carmelitas are all worth a try. Had my first flat white here years ago and still find they do the best, also love the chai for something different. Staff always extremely friendly and accommodating. Ignore the 1 star below, covid regulations have nothing to do with how fantastic a cafe is.

The service, food, and atmosphere were all amazing! Excellent covid standards and very friendly staff. I had the avo brekkie which was delicious and beautifully presented, and my friend had huevos rotos which was also lovely.

Stylish, friendly, relaxed brunch place that really could have been in Sydney. They have absolutely everything right about the food, design and ambiance. I absolutely loved my “sambo special” veggie sandwich with fries and the brownie to follow it. I’d be back like a shot if I were in Belfast again.

Waiting outside with the rest of east Belfast for an order I placed one hour before, yet waited ten minutes (as long as the others who hadn’t bothered to order online). Thanks for wasting my time.

Fui aquí para almorzar. Conseguí el vendedor ambulante que estaba tan salado. Quiero decir que fue solo sal. Como había tocino, realmente no necesitaba más. ¡Conseguí aguacate extra y también lo habían cubierto con sal! !El personal era amable y el servicio era bueno, pero la comida no era buena.Demasiado caro para lo que obtienes.

¡Estéril ido demasiado lejos! !Tuve que ponerme mascarilla para entrar, una vez dentro, quitarme la mascarilla, desinfectarme las manos, pararme y esperar en el mostrador, dar mi nombre y número de teléfono. Me dijo que mirara un menú de 4 tamaños en una ventana de metacrilato y que ordene mi comida y pague allí y luego. Pedí el Manwich y un té.Cuando me preguntaron si quería azúcar y leche, dije que sí, así que obtuve una taza de papel con bolsita de té, leche y azúcar. Dijo que podía tener la mesa durante 40 minutos. El desayuno era bueno, pero los huevos estaban demasiado cocidos, como era de esperar, el té no estaba muy bien. Se fue cuando me informaron que tenía 10 minutos para irme.Me imagino que si alguna vez fuera a prisión, el proceso sería muy similar.

A lovely spot to visit for a coffee and a cake. My husband and I called in here after a long walk. We had a really good cup of coffee and the most delicious cake. The staff were very friendly, would definitely recommend this place.

4 de nosotros tenemos comida / café / san pellegrino aquí. Fue agradable sentarse afuera y ponerse al día con amigos nuevamente después de meses de aislamiento. La comida era increíble, todos estábamos muy contentos con la comida. El servicio también fue excelente, aunque un poco lento, sin embargo, estaba muy ocupado, así que era de esperar. Definitivamente lo recomendaría y estoy deseando volver.

Tenía muchas ganas de cenar en los Comerciantes Generales, ya que había escuchado buenos informes. Cenamos el sábado por la noche. Estaba ocupado. Ambos pedimos Carne Asasda, que es un filete picana marinado. Desafortunadamente, era carne de muy mala calidad que contenía más grasa que el bistec. Hablé con la directora al respecto. Never disappoints! Always a pleasure to visit when visiting Belfast. Can always guarantee a tasty brunch or lunch. Staff amazing, great vibe, fab coffee and delicious food that arrived promptly even over a busy lunchtime. Will be back again.

The only positive thing about this place is the food. The atmosphere, staff, service and seating arrangement all need re-considered. Won’t be back.

Let’s begin the experience with the painful task of attempting to find a parking space on what is a highly populated street. After locating a space, and walking what feels like 4 miles to the building, you are greeted with a very tight squeeze on opening the door due to the lack of waiting space. After waiting for 5/10 minutes, we were finally spoken to and our name was taken and added to the queue for a table. After waiting, we saw several people walk in and be seated before we were, despite two 2 seater tables becoming free next to eachother (we were a party of 4). When finally, we do get our “table”, it is in fact a bench the width of an ironing board, with seats less comfortable than my stomach after a ropey vindaloo. The staff give off that moody teenager vibe, that makes you actually feel guilty when asking anything of them. As the title states, a truly woeful experience, the only positive is the food, which is lovely, however, not enough to warrant a return visit. A truly pathetic establishment.

A great find. Had a lovely lunch here with my sister. The amazing thing was the different range of food and allergies/intolerances taken into consideration. Will return.

Si bien fue agradable, sentí que era una combinación ligeramente seca. De ninguna manera soy chef, pero sentí que incluso tener la opción de una salsa tipo tomate para acompañarlo podría haber ayudado un poco.En general, el servicio y el ambiente fueron muy buenos y el hecho de que también traiga los suyos ayuda.

Excellent menu. So much to choose from. Kids menu really good and only £3.50. An extra £2.25 for bacon is a bit too expensive and the same Price for avacado doesn’t make sense. Lovely meals. Kids loved eggs and waffles. Pulled pork with potato was so delicious and the steak was yummy too.

Called in for breakfast and was served a real treat, beautiful food, trendy decor, friendly staff as great service. Rather pricey so will need to keep this level of excellence up.i limited parking

Quick stop whilst waiting for the boat home. Sat outside as we had two of the dogs with us. Friendly server put down the awning above us as there were some grey clouds coming over but the rain stayed away.

I love the location of this little coffee shop. It’s close to home and beside stormont for a nice walk. The coffee is great and some of the food is really nice.

First time here and a very different menu, compared to most cafes of this type.Busy, even though we arrived well after the usual lunch rush. Bit, a table for 4 available and water straight to the table. I like that. very pleasant staff. food was great. My wife and our friend had soup, served in a huge bowl with toast sourdough. My son and I had a pulled pork stuffed roll with mustard mayonnaise and it was delicious. The bowl of fry was also excellent. Finished off with the best flat white I've had in a long time.

The service warm and welcoming. The food is delicious with unique twists to the menu. Would 100% recommend.

Stopped in here after a walk round the grounds of stormont. As it was nice weather we sat outside. It says very busy so we had a short wait but the manager greeted us as soon as we arrived and showed us to seats where we could wait. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. We had delicious quirky and unusual meals which we thoroughly enjoyed. Very different but enjoyable Spanish style combinations.

Worst service I’ve ever had in my life!! You walk in and there’s no order to the queue. Walked in to what I assumed was a queue so waited to talk to someone to go on a list to get a seat. After 5 minutes someone does come over and indeed writes my name down on a list. 5 minutes later a seat frees up and I patiently wait to be seated...this doesn’t happen. Instead someone walks in and just sits down. The waiter walks over to, which I presume, move them but instead simply puts a menu down in front of them and walks away. At this moment I’d had enough and left. Go to the other one on Ormeau road. Same food and the staff are actually friendly and not rude or creepy like this one.

Visitamos el domingo por la tarde en el restaurante East Belfast. Al pasar por la puerta nos saludaron unos camareros deslumbrantes con el aspecto de "oh, no otro cliente". Al menos conseguimos una mesa en la parte de atrás, al lado de la cocina, que estaba bien y no tuvimos que esperar. Al observar el menú de desayuno / brunch ofrecido, era evidente que se inclinaban hacia el desayuno y no hacia el almuerzo. Sólo había dos cosas lo suficientemente importantes como para un almuerzo. Uno de ellos fue el MK V cubano que mi compañero y yo ordenamos. Mirando aunque el menú de los niños era bastante grave. No estoy seguro de cuántos padres tendrán hijos menores de 3 años que comerán huevos revueltos / hervidos / escalfados en tostadas para el almuerzo, por lo que nos conformamos con salchichas y frijoles. Pedimos papas fritas y rápidamente nos dijeron que no se puede porque están repartidas para las comidas. De acuerdo, solo tendremos un tazón de papas fritas, no por la misma razón. Que es el toro absoluto en mis ojos. De todos modos nuestras comidas venían con papas fritas, así que planeamos compartirlas. La comida llegó y, para ser honesto, 9 para el cubano era bastante alto para todo lo que recibes. La salchicha de los niños estaba bien, pero los frijoles eran bastante terribles, especialmente como una comida para niños. ¿Cómo no tener frijoles simples en salsa de tomate a los que están acostumbrados todos los niños? Habíamos terminado antes que nuestra hija, pero sintieron la necesidad de limpiar nuestros platos mientras ella seguía comiendo. Sentarse después de comer era bastante evidente las expresiones tristes de los camareros y el personal de cocina que parecían hartos. Poco después, otra familia se sentó a nuestro lado y preguntó si podían pedir prestada la silla que no utilizamos en nuestra mesa. Nosotros, por supuesto, dijimos que sí, pero el camarero dijo que no porque dificultaría el servicio, que era una basura, ya que la mesa y el camino eran fácilmente lo suficientemente grandes como para acomodarlos. Los escuché pasar por la misma rutina "lo que no es chips, a qué te refieres, no hay mucho en el menú para niños, etc." Básicamente, exactamente lo que pasamos. Recibimos la cuenta y rápidamente nos decepcionamos, ya que estoy seguro de que la otra familia lo hizo. Basta con decir que no volveríamos corriendo. Algunos trabajos en servicio y el menú es obligatorio. Todo fue no, no puedes o lo siento no.

Sunday brunch never tasted so good! quirky menu and great atmosphere! staff were friendly and attentive we will definitely be back!

So you may have to wait a few minutes and you may have to share a table but the menu is a refreshing change from the usual offerings and the food is delicious. The service is excellent and that’s why I would recommend this place. We had the real McCoy and the eggs Benny and enjoyed every mouthful.

A classic example of an upmarket coffee/breakfast/brunch spot that gives the hipster vibe but attracts ladies who lunch and couples who want to have a date without the booze.

Visité a los comerciantes generales del este de Belfast un domingo por la tarde. El restaurante estaba lleno de clientes y tenía una corta espera de 10 minutos por una mesa. El personal parecía bastante desinteresado aparte del caballero que tomó nuestra orden (no entendió su nombre, pero notó que era brasileño). Él fue estupendo, respondió a cualquier pregunta que tuviéramos sobre el menú y fue muy útil. La comida estuvo deliciosa (The Real McCoy, Huevos Rotos, Acai Bowl), uno de los mejores almuerzos que he experimentado en mucho tiempo. El único inconveniente es el precio: 8/10 para el desayuno cocinado / brunch es un poco caro para lo que es, considerando que puede obtener una cena a ese precio en el centro de la ciudad y las áreas circundantes. Situación similar con el café, bonito pero muy pequeño por el precio.

Spot of lunch, great little place simply but well appointed, cosy but with a enough room so you don’t feel your in other peoples space. I had the “manwich” (pictured) absolutely Fantastic, a good price for great food. Will definitely be coming again.

Went here for coffee and a scone but went for the waffles that were a special and they were the most amazing waffles I've ever had. Look forward to visiting again

Un lugar encantador para el almuerzo y un gran menú de comida sabrosa en un entorno despojado. Se necesitaba una espera de 10 a 15 minutos, pero eso no fue un problema y el personal manejó la situación muy bien. Pan de masa agria, huevos y hummus fueron regados con buen café en un gran ambiente. Sin duda volveremos y exploraremos más del menú. Un gran descubrimiento!

As always, 5* saved for those who deserve it. General Merchants was recommended by a friend sp i stopped by when passing on route to Derry. I was impressed. The service was great, quirky interior and i didnt feel solo at all sotting at the window watching the world go by. Good music btw! Food, really good. Takeshi Chicken Burger was fresh and full of flavour, just enough zing. The coffee was also brilliant. Could just be my must stop place when passing from now on. Well done!!

The toilet is unisex and not clean. The toilet seat does not fit well. I'll never return. Tea was ok but large cappuccino here was a regular size elsewhere.

Ordered breakfast with my two friends.. one had porridge (no problems) and me and my friend ordered an egg and bacon dish on sourdough. Both of us took one bite and said it didn’t taste right. Told the waitress and she automatically argued with us saying she had it for breakfast and was fine.. said it was our “taste”. No replacement offered at all. For all it would of taken for them to put on some bacon and toast but instead the girl acted like she had personally made the food and took such offence we said it was horrible. I could understand if it was one of us but both of us. They tried to charge us for it and argued for 5 minutes about how it is our taste.. I did not pay because I am not paying for food that is disgusting and topped of with terrible service. tip of advice .. stop being stuck up hippies and just make me a normal breakfast!!!!!!! And get better staff!!!

Came here for breakfast with my pregnant friend, we ordered the chilli eggs and when she stated the breakfast tasted ‘off’ the waitress was extremely rude and said we didn’t know what we were saying as she knew they had been delivered this morning. Both breakfasts sent back without an offer of a replacement (after one bite).

I’m fed up with this place. Food is good but the manager this morning has convinced me to never go back again. So you can’t sit at any table it has to be the one they want you to sit at. The real McCoy (breakfast) is a real disappointment. Can’t pay for you own breakfast as individuals and your accused of being rude when all your trying to do is pay them money in order to leave. Manager needs to go back to ‘how can we help you sir school’

It's not often you come across a hidden gem like here that simply blows you away. The service was excellent throughout and couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating. We had bread & dips to start and shared this. The spiced hummus dip with pomegranates was delicious. I could probably have devoured one of these on my own (next time). Then for our main we both opted for Bacon & Double Cheeseburger. This was one of the nicest burgers I've had in a long time. The added bonus was the BYO and an unbelievable bill of £33 for a delicious meal with excellent service. Will definitely be back and very soon. Thanks

Ordered the Huevos Rotos, had asked if the Ballymaloe relish was tomato based (as I have a skin sensitivity to tomato’s/based food), it was confirmed that the jalapeño relish, as an alternative, was not tomato based, so I was excited to have my first breakfast at GM.

The Benny has been edited again!! The latest incarnation is delicious and almost as good as the original... just missing the sriracha hollandaise. Now, leave it alone!

I've been here for brunch and more recently dinner, I couldn't fault it. good staff, great food and nice atmosphere. good for kids too- there was a large group of us with two kids and this wasn't a problem. I will return!!

Visité a GM esta mañana con un colega para desayunar y ambos pidieron un Manwich Bap. Como alguien que no come huevos, pregunté si podrían ser sustituidos por otra cosa, posiblemente con tocino o pud. El camarero advirtió que no se les permite reemplazar los artículos sin cobrar extra, pero no pueden eliminar los ingredientes sin ningún problema. Ve a imaginar la lógica en esto. Más tarde, 25 dejaron la sensación de que recibimos una respuesta de 'la computadora dice que no', así que la próxima semana volveremos a Oliver's o Sugar Cane, donde ambos restaurantes pueden atender mi disgusto por los huevos. Vergüenza de verdad.

Coffee is amazing and the food is equally as good. It’s lovely to sit in and staff very attentive and great with kids also.

Really lovely tasty Sunday brunch - great to see local produce show cased and lots of healthy choices available if that’s what you are after but you can go full monty breakfast too. The General Merchants is a great place to eat. The most convenient branch for me is their Upper Newtownards Road, but there are other outlets (equally delicious!).

The food is top, the coffee is fantastic and the staff are lovely! Reasonably priced with specials that change regularly...this is definitely the place for breakfast

I was a regular here and despite finding a shard of plastic in my lunch a few months ago I still like going here.

I have visited here a few times, breakfast, brunch, takeaway coffee and it never disappoints. This time, we secured a quiet table at the side and had a productive meeting over a very enjoyable lunch. My colleagues had soup, generous portion size and well flavoured. I couldn't resist the Benny which, to me, is the top menu item. Coffees all round and my filter was to a high barista standard.

Really nice spot for brunch with friends and family. Vegan options available too. Beautiful interior and presentation of food and their coffee is to die for. Tried a few times in the past to contact them via Facebook messenger with direct questions, only to be read and ignored which is a little disappointing as they are so active on their social media platforms. However, their food is great and I would certainly recommend to anyone looking for good local food.

Called in when passing and immediately loved the decor and atmosphere in the place. Definitely one of the best coffees I have had and the food was just as good. Flavours were amazing-these chefs know how to cook and combine ingredients. Well done!!

Had a lovely meal In lovely surroundings served by very nice people. We stumbled across the restaurant by a recommendation and it was a superb meal at a good price.

We've visited the General Merchant several times and have always enjoyed the menu and staff. The food is interesting with creative combining of textures and flavors. Staff ALWAYS helpful and kind, including the kitchen staff. Always a good smile and laugh. The place is always buzzing.

He desayunado en numerosas ocasiones gm y puedo confirmar que la comida es muy buena, sin embargo el personal no tienen la primera pista sobre servicio al cliente. Llegamos el viernes por la mañana y tomó la última una posición en la parte trasera contiene dos mesas grandes, me preguntó cómo muchos están comiendo 6 respondió, la camarera nos dijo que no podíamos usar estas tablas ya que son para grupos de 2 fours y habría que mover. Cuando les pregunté por esta demanda me recibieron con una actitud hosca casi de insolence! Me preguntó por qué teníamos que mover, que fue contestada con que conseguiré mi supervisor. Nos mudamos a una mesa en el frente, que era un apretado, sin explicación o razón evidente. Personal chocante, mis amigos y yo no volveremos!

I phoned an order in for a small /half portion of porridge to be put in a cup instead of the big box ,,I walked in about 10 mins after thinking it would be ready , I was charged £6 which is for a full porridge I waited a further 20 mins on my porridge which was brought down to me in a box which I had asked for it not to be put in I said to the girl that’s a full porridge I asked for half in a cup and uv give me a full and charged me for a full she said well if y want il give u ur £3 back and U can just take that and her attitude was stinking ,, I said I wanted what I asked for because the box isn’t convenient for me and that’s y I asked for the cup but after waiting for over 20 mins and was now late for work ,,I was so annoyed I just said look it dosnt matter il just get my money back and I don’t want the porridge anymore , General merchant pride themselves on being a top place in Belfast but there staff are completely letting their brand down they really need to clean to their act and start over where the staff are concerned or teach them some basic customer service skills there’s few girls in particular that have real bad attitude and arnt very welcoming at all I don’t think I will be back il go to Oliver’s Coffee Shop from now on where the staff are delightful

Deliberately traveled to Belfast to enjoy the famous Benny here, so a lot to live up to. Beautiful coffee, friendly buzz, fab service - and the Benny was perfection.

We arrived and it was very busy, we were told it would be a 25min wait which is no problem at all, i understand. Whilst standing and awaiting with roughly another 5 customers we were rudely asked by a waitress to move over to the other side of the door which was no problem at all, 1 minute later another waitress told us to move back to where we were originally as we were in the way. Now that is grand but when the second waitress confronted the first about moving us she replied very loudly that it was Because we wouldn't move for her whilst rolling her eyes which is completely a wrong statement or this review wouldn't be here. Now we had no problems with anything until we could hear them saying these issues.

Really need to sort out there hygiene, could believe the dish cloth the waitress was polishing the cutlery with, I have cleaner floor cloths, toilet awful, the waitress apron was filthy, god know what’s happening behind the scenes when this was all done if plain sight of the customers

The Benny is king in my book, great food and worth every penny. This is a busy spot yes, however I feel that one less table for two might give diners a little privacy and comfort as opposed to sitting atop of each other.

The all day brunch menu is inventive and so far (3 visits) every dish tried has been super tasty and well presented. Highly recommended.

I had been wanting to visit General Merchants for lunch for quite some time and was excited to get the chance today. Unfortunately, it didn't quite meet the expectations I had.

Loved the international influences on the brunch menu- flavours are lovely. Great latte, desserts were also bursting with flavour. Service was good.

I had just come from a hospital appointment and unable to walk very far, so I was looking for somewhere open past 5pm where I could get a coffee and work on my laptop while my wife paid a Good Samaritan visit to an ill friend. I looked up GM's website and was informed that they were open until 6. Perfect, I thought. No- I walk in at 4.50 and was met by a young waitress who simply said "We're closing" When I mentioned the website they just shrugged- No apology or explanation- she just said 'No, we're closing". When I mentioned how this had inconvenienced me, I couldn't walk far and my wife had driven off for an hour and I was stranded- she actually laughed- and the bar staff who were listening in at this stage laughed as well. I appreciate that this could have been a genuine mistake and that perhaps nothing could be done about it, but it was the attitude that stank.

I was here for an evening Christmas dinner with a group of friends. The food was excellent and service was really great too! I really enjoyed the way the turkey dinner was cooked and presented. The chocolate torte dessert was really tasty too. The only slight downside was the place was quite cold despite the extra heaters they had put in. It was an exceptionally cold night though. This was my first visit here and I would definitely return again.

We have just returned from 3 days in Belfast and we went to General Merchants every day for brunch. The food was great, the staff very friendly and the atmosphere relaxed and chilled. The service was good and food delicious. Would strongly recommend.

Not much room to swing a cat at the weekends, while the wait is definitely worth it, it can be quite frustrating with the long wait.TIP, on Sundays get there when the god fearing folk are deep in communication with the pulpit or arrive bright an early on Saturday before the savages descend for breakfast.Food recommendations. . . easy, work through the menu, it is intoxicating and additive, once they have you hooked you will yearn to return time again.
