Gate Of India in Cardiff

Why is their food so spicy, used to come here regularly but started going somewhere else due to the spicy hot nature of the food. Decided it to give a go again due to the convenance of being able to heat it up, but it is still incredibly spicy, the Bagain Bartha was virtually inedible due to the spiciness. Food is always good quality but unfortunately now gives me heartburn, so I’ll be giving it a miss from now on, which is a shame.

Used to be great but going downhill. Priced seems to always be increasing, had a watery curry today, plain biryani (pilau rice and some chicken) and stale poppadoms. Rang to complain about a dish and the person who answered was ridiculously argumentative. Apparently never had any complaints before but seem to be a few here 👀 Last visit for us I'm afraid.

Don’t get it. Picked up some hugely overpriced cold curry to heat up at home. Staff took it ‘out the back’ for 10 minutes to package up for us to take home. Which, for all we could tell, was putting the boxes into a paper bag. What took 10 minutes? Cost us £40. Got home, heated it up and it’s probably the most disappointing curry I’ve ever eaten. Very confused as to the popularity.

We live locally and find ourselves often getting a curry from Gateway of India. The selection is varied, but the premise of being able to simply heat the food when home works well for us. We particularly enjoy getting a selection of curries for parties etc. Top quality food, fair price and convenient.

after wanting to try this spot for many years and hearing great things, i’m happy to say i was blown away. top notch food, one of the best lamb curries i’ve ever had (lamb dopiaza) and the service was amazing; i was impressed to see that the staff had chucked in some chicken lentil pakoras, veg samosas, mint sauce and mango chutney for free. food was ready to collect in 8 minutes which i can’t fault. overall would absolutely recommend to others looking for something different than their usual indian. will be back soon, can’t wait!

We always get the non-vegetarian Thali which is perfect for a family of three. Without fail the food is always amazing and staff are always happy and helpful. Highly recommend.

Ordered a non vegetarian Thalis by phone and as we don’t like lamb asked if this could be substituted with a chicken balti, 35 pence more. When I went to collect they added £2 to the bill for doing this. Did not advise of this on the phone. Told him politely to shove the order and went to the Indian Gate in Whitchurch, excellent curries and very friendly. My new local takeaway now.

Terrible service and food is not as described. Wouldnt really surprise me if there is someone paid to add those great reviews on a regular basis. REALLY DON'T WASTE your money. I paid £35 for 2 mains, a pilau rice, 3 poppadoms and a portion of samosas, and that's to heat it up myself... Main dishes were a simple Lamb bhuna and Chicken curry. These are always mild/medium dishes but they were way,way too hot and more like a madras. I complained as it was a lot of money for a ready made meal that we simply could not eat. I had a lecture from the owner about how they are a real take away and to not compare with any other Indian as compared to them, all others have poor quality ingredients. The gateway of india only uses the finest welsh lamb and Norfolk chicken. Jeez it was like Mick from Gavin and Stacey and the Norfolk Kerry Bronze. He missed the point. I never argued the quality. I argued that the food was too hot and for us, inedible... Therefore it was money down the drain. Maybe fine for some, but that's why they order spicy food. Upshot. Owner totally refused a refund, (although he made me drive back there with the food)stating we had eaten half of the dish. Photos show how much was remained. He expected me to bring our plates in as well🙈!!!! Well, we'll never go again and I won't be recommending but with all their 'fantastic reviews' I'm sure they'll be fine and I'm just a whinge bag who can't handle spice and real quality food...Next time I visit an Indian restaurant I'll ask if there is a large quantity of🌶 in the milder dishes just so I can be put in my place.

I’ve always liked the food especially the samosas which are still great . But my main meal of vegetable tikka masala was just so hot it burnt my mouth and I had to literally suck ice to cool it down . I used to buy regularly until about two or 3 years ago when the food became to hot . I decided to try again and bought to eat Christmas Eve today . But it was so hot I couldn’t eat it put some cream in to try and cool it but that did not work. I’m very disappointed and sad to say I will never buy again .

Following lots of recommendations, we picked up some chilled curries ready to heat and enjoy at home on a Saturday night. Stupidly we didn’t check the ingredients in full and were disappointed to find ‘wheat’ in so many of the dishes. Whilst we expected wheat in the starters & of course the naan which we always avoid, finding a korma, biryani, and pilau rice with wheat was really surprising. In all the Indian restaurants we’ve eaten in ( and it’s a lot!) being a coeliac has never been an issue. And why you’d want to add wheat to rice is beyond me. (The prevalence of additional wheat starch in pre-prepared food is a suggested link to the rise in wheat/ gluten intolerance). Sadly we won’t be using ‘Gateway of India’ ever again.

We attend this restaurant on a regular basis and can not fault the waiters and chef's. The service and food is always top notch.

I just visited here for the first time tonight after being recommended by a colleague. Was a bit sceptical about paying takeaway prices for something I need to heat up - I was wrong. Service was good, very friendly people working there. I ordered a korma, rice and naan. On top of that I recieved (for free) chicken pakora, samosas, poppadom and mango chutney. The food is so delicious, cooking instructions ruins really simple. Service was great! Will defo go again :)

The Gateway of India has been successfully serving customers for over 25 years and I have to say I still think its a great place. My Prawn Madras was packed with excellent quality prawns. The sauce wasn't to spicy. In fact it was spot on. A great bonus was the free popodum, mint sauce and mango chutney. I can also recommend there Vegetable Samosa's. The prices are a little more expensive than other takeaways but you get real quality and good sized portions. Please note the food is blast chilled after cooking so comes cold and needs to be heated. This has made the Gateway of India hugely successful.

Extremely disappointed. Ordered online had to wait over an hour to get home and find parts of the order missing. Poor service and mediocre food. Will not use again.

I order from here weekly and have done for a while. Phoned up at 5 pm the lady said collection isn't ready intill 7pm . Thought ok fair enough as its new years eve . Went on to place my order but was interrupted by the lady to say no can't make up a korma sauce as they don't have time. Really annoyed as I'm a regular customer and to be told FLAT OUT NO Although sauces are on the menu ruined our new years eve plans. Maybe my £17.00 order wasn't enough for them . Either way disgusting service to a regular .

Absolutely awful. Ordered our food at 7:45pm for delivery… x5 phone calls and 2.5 hours later they still hadn’t left with our food and told us the delivery driver was leaving now and on their way. 1 hour later our order still had not arrived. The owner apologised to us on the phone and stated that he will give a refund or the next order free. We did not receive the refund and he has point blank refused to give our next order free and told us not to come to them again. That night our food arrived just before midnight and then as it comes cold- 25 minutes cooking time. We have been going here for years as well our our family- massive disappointment and most definitely won’t be ordering with them again.

Love this place however the food is a lot spicier than other Indian takeaways. Wish the spice wasn't so strong as no good for a family when kids won't eat spicy food - Even the mild dishes are very spicy

Ordered for the first time this evening, delivery arrived earlier than expected with a very lovely delivery driver. Ordered 2 x chicken tikka masala, 1 chicken bhuna, 1 chicken jalfrezi and 2 naan bread. We were surprised by a selection of extras (chutney, yogurt, veg samosas and little bhaji/daal bites) everything was top quality and beautifully presented, all labelled with use by dates on the off chance you don't demolish it on the day of purchase, and very clear instructions on how to heat each item. We will definitely order again. Thank you for a lovely meal.

This is a simple concept... You buy a cold curry and great if up at home. There is a wide choice of traditional curries available from mild to rather spikey.The USP of The gateway has to be the complimentary extras. Once you order your curry, the staff provide you with a miriad of snacks which are really tasty. There almost no need to order a starter.Great food.

This is my favourite takeaway. Food is cold so you can collect early and just heat up when you’re hungry. The king prawn puri is nothing short of spectacular. Meat is clearly high quality. Really wide selection of delicious vegetarian dishes, cauliflower Bhuna is my favourite veg dish. Always get a bag of amazing complimentary snacks. The mini veg samosa’s are gorgeous. They even do cauli- rice for the new year new me crowd. Staff are lovely. Can’t say a bad word about GOI

Ordered this for delivery at a mates house at his insistence that it was a 'banging' takeaway. I couldn't understand why it was so well priced at first, I was convinced something was wrong with it and I'd be suffering the next day. Only when it arrived did my friend tell me that you have to heat it up yourself. Made a lot more sense then. Seeing as he ordered it, I'm not sure how clear it is on the website that you have to heat the food up, but not a problem for us and I wouldn't have had an issue with it had I been ordering for myself at home. It just takes a little longer when you factor in an hour delivery time, plus about half hour to cook.We ordered the non-vegetarian tasty thali to share, which was tikka masala, lamb curry, chicken curry, mixed tikka starter, pilau rice, naan, yoghurt, chicken and dal pakoras and a poppadum. We ordered a chapati and an extra poppadum to make up the delivery minimum. When it arrived, we had an extra bag of veggie samosas which was great, as well as mango chutney and a minty dip.Heated up the food and dished it out - my friend knew what to expect and was excited to get stuck in. I tried a bit of everything and it was lovely, really good food that wasn't 'tainted' by grease or lukewarm from being the last delivery. It tasted fresh because you heated it yourself. Really enjoyed the chicken dal pakoras in particular, as well as the lamb kebab type thing that was in the mixed tikka starter - so soft it just fell apart which is hard to achieve with lamb.Excellent value for money, I'd absolutely order again just for myself and spread it over two days, money wise it works out great. Would definitely recommend.

We alway go to this Indian. We have been eating this for years as a take away. We find its the best Indian. Would so recommend it.

Have ordered from The Gateway of India a few times. Absolutely delicious food. Always tastes fresh with good quality ingredients. I am vegetarian and they have lots of choice and the meals taste as if they have been thought out rather than just added to the menu to show that vegetarians are catered for begrudgingly. My husband is not not veggie and he loves the food too.We all love the little extras which are complimentary.Normally we collect, but on this occasion we opted for delivery which took too long so we ended up collecting anyway, hence only four stars.

Tried for first time and lovely meals, cold, so heat up at home idea actually works ok, but price a bit steep for a regular visit as others we like do it much cheaper...... Nice for a change now and again i guess.

Been going here for years, they are quite hot but that suits us! The nan breads I think could do with being upgraded as I buy nicer from a supermarket but on the whole the food is delicious and not at all greasy which is why I keep going back. However I do feel that they are very expensive. Hence a pay day treat.

Excellent quality at fair price combined with efficient and friendly service. Had the takeaway instead of going out for a family birthday celebration. With ages ranging from 15 to 80 choice of venue to suit everyone can be tricky -not to mention expensive. The takeaway was a great success. It catered for everyones taste and the extra nibbles and sauces etc complemented the meal beautifully. It definitely "hit the spot' and would highly recommend

He estado yendo aquí durante los últimos años. Incluso cuando están cerrados, no iré a ningún otro lado ya que todo lo demás es inferior, no, en realidad lo es. El personal es maravilloso, muy amable y simpático, especialmente la señora detrás del mostrador. La comida es excelente, no hay aceite horrible o acumulación de grasa en el cartón o en su plato después de calentar, una experiencia maravillosa para las papilas gustativas y su cintura:) Los vales de regalo son fabulosos para regalar y los obsequios que siempre se ofrecen son segundos para ninguna. Siempre se está probando una nueva salsa o golosinas de las que puedes participar y dar tu opinión. Te hacen sentir como un amigo bienvenido aquí, y te tratan como tal.

Un grupo de nosotros tenía comida para llevar la semana pasada, y todos coincidieron en que la comida era fresca y deliciosa. Pedimos en línea, y estaba listo a la hora señalada para la recolección, ¡con algunos extras sorpresa! Había suficiente comida para todos, dos de nosotros cenamos la noche siguiente y la terminé la tercera noche. Elegimos una selección de platos más suaves con su encantador arroz esponjoso, y todos eran suaves pero deliciosamente sabrosos. No me puedo quejar de la comida o el servicio y volveremos.

Comida encantadora . . compre camino a casa desde el trabajo y calor después de que los pequeños se vayan a la cama. Una comida dura 2 noches o fácilmente una comida y naan es suficiente para 2. Had a meal from here with family at the weekend. Have never had food from here before and it was really tasty. We had six different curry’s and all were lovely. They also threw in two dishes of starters for us. The only thing I wasn’t fussed about was the rice. Not much taste at all. Having said that would definitely go there again.

Heard a lot about this place and finally gave it a go. The food was delivered fairly quickly with a friendly driver. The curry and sides were absolutely stunning, however the naan bread was dry and bland but I understand why (as they only serve cold food) . The Dal Chicken Pakora was a thing of dreams! salad was not nice but those two negative does not outweigh the positives. Good food overall.

We recently moved back to the area and returned to GOI which is as good if not better that it was 20 years ago. The flavours are incredible and you can taste the quality. I can not recommend it highly enough. Don’t compare this ‘heat yourself’ takeaway with supermarket ready meals because the food at GOI is in a league of its own! You must try it for yourself (also worth a visit for the pakora tasters while you wait- they’re delicious!)

My expectations were very high and sadly did not live up to them. Veg curry was lacking in runnyness far too dry and just very disappointing. Sorry but not for me £6.75 for a ready meal to microwave is not worth it in my view.

My boyfriend and I ordered 2 mains, 2 naans, one side, poppadums, and a rice to share, which came to £30. We were shocked to find that we had to then heat it ourselves when we got home!!

First time ordering tonight for a delivery. I was nearly put off because I had to heat it myself (which sounds ridiculous now) but I’m so glad I took a gamble. Fantastic flavours and bigger portions than I expected it was only for me but could easily feed 2/3. How many times have we ordered a hot takeaway only to be disappointed so heating ourselves and knowing it will be delicious is a no brainier. Oh and they added some Un requested side dishes which I thought was a nice touch as a new customer.

The curry here is absolutely fantastic, great service when picking up and it's such a nice little shop. The chicken tikka masala is out of this world! The portion sizes are really good as well, plenty of food so that you're almost too full to move.

We have eaten here many times and most of the time had a good meal.

Food is always good and good portions, but now you paying restaurant prices for a takeaway, that you heat up yourself. Would now rather go for a sit down meal and relax with a few cobras.

My family and I have been regular customers for many years. I work away from home for weeks at a time and on my return, it is a usual treat to have a takeaway from here. However, we have noticed that since the transition initally to the polystyrene type containers, the qaulity AND quantity of the food has declined. We thought it may just be the chef at the time etc. Unfortunately, for us, it has not improved. The meat and sauces are very dry. The poppadoms that are provided are always soft too! The amount of food awards that they win do not reflect the standard expected! It is expensive too. Sorry, but you have lost us as customers!

Have been going here for years which tells its own story. Food is always excellent, freshly cooked and using quality ingredients, menu has plenty of variety with weekly specials, always plenty of choice for everyone. Service is quick and friendly and staff always happy to help. Look forward to returning many more times.

Really love the self service selection in the new fridges. Portion sizes are good and you don’t get a load of oil on top like you do with some take aways. Bit more expensive than others but the quality is superb and when you count the free extras you get I think it’s good value. Would recommend

I’m not someone who normally comments on products/services but had to after my ‘solo’ meal tonight!

This takeaway is always winning awards and quite rightly so. It’s is always serving up delicious food and has a menu that is regularly reviewed with weekly specials added. It’s no more expensive than any other takeaway but of a very much high quality. Am so thankful I live locally.

Can’t understand the few negative reviews - have they got the wrong take-away? This place is THE BEST in Cardiff, and by a very wide margin. Had the salmon special tonight, and it was superb. Have been coming here since it opened, and it gets better and better. A wide and imaginative selection, something for everyone. The quality has been unfailingly outstanding in my experience, and the system is slick and efficient. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. What more could you want?

Having been a resident of Rhiwbina for 20 years I have only just ventured to the Gateway Of India in the last 2 months or so. I cannot recommend the home made chutney made by Ellen enough. You are always treated as a friend and the takeaway feels very personal. The heating instructions are slightly off on the packets but I feel that quality of the food is top notch.

I don’t really want to write this review, as I do not want everyone to know about it and how excellent it is....haha. It’s the best curry in the land and they are so lovely and friendly and can’t do enough for you in the gateway to India. The concept is different and great for us but more importantly fresh super tasty and a joy every time! And don’t. Get me started on there samosa and chicken pakoras to die for!!!

I had heard good things about Gateway of India. We parked round the corner and could smell it a hundred metres away. It was delightful. We went in and there were onion bhajees and samosas out to just eat. They had a huge range of dishes. Lamb, chicken, fish and vegetable curries and sides and starters. Everything was out in the fridges, (if you didn't know they cook the curries then put them in fridges then you heat them up at home) very systematically so everything was easy to find. They had a list of the different curry types, rogan josh, vindaloo ect, and what they generally had, and how spicy they were. e.g. rogan Josh- tomato and pepper-4. The staff were lovely in helping us get what we needed. We even got some free samosas and onion bahjees in our bag at the end. Fairly generous portions and decent prices. Definitely recommended.

The staff here are lovely, berry accommodating of larger parties, you even receive a call on the day to check everything is ok for the booking! The food is brilliant, just slightly to heavy on the spice for my taste buds, probably down to the fact that I've never really ventured past a Korma, which of course no fault of the restaurant! The house white wine is also lovely, and the bar is well stocked and reasonably priced.

As always excellent food - the whole family was visiting and they all look forward to sit down to Moslaur's food.

I live in London, but the call of the Gateway of India is almost as strong as the one of visiting my family at home in Cardiff. My mother is an awful chef, so we keep on coming back. Thankfully Moslaur and his family who run the restaurant have been knocking it out of the park consistently for so long, that there is nowhere else I'd rather get Indian food from. Keep up the good work!

Lamb madras, chicken tikka side and as much pakora as I could carry! All of it was stunning, the lamb was to perfection!!

Worst ever. Completely unclear online that you have to cook it yourself. Food arrived an hour late and the driver had the cheek to say it's better to cook the food by oven instead of microwave for taste. If that's the case send it hot yourselves! No apology for the wait, seems they're just bothered about the people who don't complain. Didn't end up eating until 11pm after ordering at 8pm. Absolute shambles. The food itself was alright but not fantastic, naan was meant to be garlic but tasted plain. Would never order from here again.

I must say that I'm not a huge fan of takeaways as I find them just about average. We were treated to a meal from your establishment a few weeks ago and I must say that we were blown away by the taste and quality of our choices. We had the lamb pasanda and dhansak along with the chicken phatia and all the onion bhagis, pakoras and samosas with rice. Everything tasted great and there was enough for two meals so that was good value. What we noticed most was the quality of the ingredients. It's one of the best bought curry we've had and it's one of those times where the price reflects that. We also liked the convenience of the meals being packed and chilled ready to be collected or delivered and just to heat up when needed. We liked everything we had and would definitely buy again.

It's not clear that you have to heat the food at home. Luckily we were pre warned by a friend who was joining us for dinner but hadn't been there when we ordered (by this point it was too late to cancel otherwise we would have).The meal for five people cost £84 - that is incredibly expensive for a takeaway you essentially have to cook yourself! We'd ordered in plenty of time to eat before the Klitschko Joshua fight, the time of delivery was due to be 9.15 - it arrived at 10 just as the fight started. The driver (who was the manager) was very unapologetic.Between the five of us there were mixed reviews over the quality of the food, personally I found the starters greasy. The chicken pakora was just tiny scraps of greasy chicken. I will say the samosas were quite tasty. The lamb saag was poor and the meat was fatty and tough. Our garlic naans had no flavour, certainly not garlic. The majority of us described it as an average ready meal - I'd have rather gone to Tesco and paid £20 rather than waste £84 on this.

We found this company through Trip Advisor and saw all of the fabulous reviews. Tonight we thought we would give this company a go. I can honestly say I have never ever had such a beautifully prepared meal and the food was Devine.The food arrived within about 15-20mins and we had the oven on ready to cook.All of the packaging tells you how long you need to cook the meals for depending on what you order and we received extras.I cannot recommend this company highly enough and I will most definitely be ordering from here again.I think I have been spoiled now and will find it hard going anywhere else.It is slightly more expensive but so worth it.

My partner and i recently visited Cardiff and searched for an Indian that catered well to Vegetarians.. what a gem we came across, the menu is extensive and the food is authentic and delicious ! Although we found it to be quite pricey, you get what you pay for and it was worth every penny, not to mention we got several free items ! Highly recommended.

The customer service was absolutely outstanding and the food was phenomenal. Recommend to anyone! We will be returning weekly!

Being vegan it's normally never too difficult to find Indian food which suits our diet and the Gateway of India is no different. Indian chefs to a great extent understand veganism (and vegetarianism) better than traditional UK (or western) chefs. I accept many if not most UK based Indian restaurant chefs may themselves be U.K. born and bred but it remains a cultural appreciation within the Indian community based upon their traditional diet much of which is meat free and animal friendly.A quick telephone discussion resulted in a whole host of options including meals not listed as vegan which they suggested could easily be modified- great customer care!A novel way to serve up a Take Away I've not previously experienced - the meal is prepared fresh but served cold ready for the customer heat and eat so no worry about your meal getting cold....it already is!!Quality of food is excellent; flavours are delicious and quantity is sufficient for the hungriest appetite. This is a bit of a gem to find and is well recommended

We ordered takeaway from the gateway of India through their website and it was easy and simple to use. We chose to have our order delivered and it arrived quickly by a friendly delivery person. The food was fresh and delicious really good quality. Having arrived chilled was great as it was easy to heat & serve. We will definitely be ordering again

Gateway recently catered for a birthday party and the service and food were fantastic. Excellent range of dishes enjoyed by all the guests.

We were staying with friends and were fortunate enough to pick up food here. Delicious and a very nice group running the store as well.

Had a take away yesterday evening from here and credit to them the food was delicious. The guy that served me was really really helpful and explained everything to me very well. Would I go back - most definitely and next time I'll be buying more so I can freeze it for another time.

I always felt a little bit snooty about 'heat and eat' and always maintained I wanted my takeaways hot on arrival. However this establishment proved me completely wrong. The food is exquisite, and that's not an exaggeration. I thought the prices were high, but thrown in are poppodums, samosas, chutneys and the best chicken pakoras I've ever tasted. The slightly higher price though is justified as everything is sooooo good. If you haven't tried it before, give it a go. You won't be disappointed.
