Garden of India in York

Wow! What a little gem. Absolutely delicious meal with fabulous service thrown in. Plenty of chicken in the tikka and the balti sauce was lovely too, not to mention the fluffy naan bread with butter. Definitely recommend a meal here during a visit to York, especially if going to the Barbican

food was excellent and very large portions, will definitely order again.

The food was fabulous & has been each time we have ordered, however tonight our order was not what we ordered. We received 2 instead of 3 poppodoms & a vegetable instead of Chicken Korma. I have contacted the restaurant online, Am hoping they acknowledge the mistakes made as no one can justify a loss of £10+ Am hoping for a good result.

Authentic music, attentive servers. One star gone for food because the lamb rogan josh sauce wasn't how it usually tastes and I've been to loads of Indian restaurants (admittedly in Ireland and England). The lamb was cooked beautifully though. The chicken ceylon and special Malaya chicken were very good for the very hot and very mild people of the party.

Hiccough with our order... we ordered Chicken Tikka Masalla, we received the vegetable option... my mum has demrntia & stated when she was eating her meal - "there was no chicken" we dismiAs she only manages half at a time, we

they changed the delivery time 3 times had to phone the restaurant and when it came it was cold.

I am a well traveled person who loves Indian food. I have had many Indian meals in different restaurants all over the UK and abroad. The one place I look forward to eating at is, the Garden Of India. If you want good tasting food then the Garden of India is for you….

Brilliant midweek treat, all hot, zingy and fresh - absolutely top and no complaints

We were a little disappointed with this restaurant after reading it had quite good reviews. The restaurant itself is very attractive and decorated for Christmas, it has a good ambience. However, the lamb in the Jalfrezi was overcooked for our liking, the chicken in the Naga wasn't much better, and the rice was cold. Poppadoms were good and the coffee was lovely. They also, very kindly, gave us a delicious complimentary Baileys.

I've been going to the Garden of India for over 15 years but never posted a review before. Chatting to the owner tonight made me realise how hard things are for small businesses (he works so hard as do his team) so - just to say - try it. It's ace. If you live in York or at an event at the Barbican (it's next door), you won't regret it.

EXCELLENT FOOD - AND SERVICE It’s been a couple of years since we came to The Garden - the quality of food has been maintained by Ali in the kitchen - his front of house staff are second to none. Tasty, authentic and not to be missed if you live in York or just visiting. Almost spoilt by a knob on his mobile phone - why would you have a twenty minute conversation whilst in a restaurant? Clearly no mates or full of his self-importance (see you next Tuesday). We will return. 👍😉

Ordered the same 2 meals, but completely different to last week :(

I went along based on Google reviews. Wasn't busy, probably 3 tables. Food was great, tasty and served promptly. Issue was the waiter (I think manager) who was rushing around and seemed very impatient. The scrawl he wrote on the bill says it all. Shame as the other staff seemed fine.

Takeaway, just enjoyed a lovely Chicken Tikka Masala, Mushroom Pilau, fresh Roti and poppadom and pickles.... Beautiful creamy Masala and the roti is AMAZING, warm, soft freshly made 😋 and all for less than 20 quid

We only live down the road but haven't been before as we have a favourite curry house elsewhere that we have visited for 15 years or more, but we've been let down there recently and decided to try somewhere new. The staff here were really friendly, we could see that lots of the customers were regulars and treated like family (hugging the staff as they entered and chatting like old friends). The food and menu was quite typical of what you would expect and all of a high quality, hot, delicious and fresh. They had an alcohol free beer too, which I always appreciate as there are still some places that don't have them on the menu. The place itself is really cosy, nicely decorated and clean and also really lovely and warm. I sometimes find places to be cold lately, as heating costs are so high and places are trying to save money, but this place was genuinely really comfortable and warm. All of this at a really reasonable price too. We will be your newest regulars I think as we thoroughly enjoyed our first visit. Thank you.

Amazing curry, lovely and talkative staff, and this beautifully quaint atmosphere that make me hate I don't live nearby. I feel like I'm in a high end expense restaurant but it's a well priced quaint little restaurant. Will definitely return next I'm in York.

The driver picked the order up 10 mins away and took 50 mins to deliver - cold food

One of the best Indian takeaways and restaurants in York. 1st visit was amazing. No faults at all. All positives and staff were friendly. 2nd was a takeaway and again, spot on. Delivery time was a bit longer than normal, but it was worth the wait. 3rd takeaway not so great. Delivery time was good, however all of the food was crushed in the bag. Curry everywhere in the bag. Lamb Rogan didn't have an ounce of spice. Portion sizes weren't the same as what we've previously had. Nann bread was slightly undercooked. Not sure if the restaurant has different chefs through the week. It's just odd how a restaurant goes from amazing with no faults at all, to racking up several issues on a Tuesday Evening. I'll still be using Garden of India as my number 1 place to go.

Went in and just ordered a korma for takeaway, £10 and it was bland as anything and got about 5 pieces of chicken. We’re young so I think they just wanted us out of the restaurant as fast as possible

The chhole puri chaat was different from what I was expecting. Very tasty nonetheless. Would be back to try their vegetarian dishes. Chef's special Akhini curry served with saffron rice had a generous portion. Though the meat wasn't as tender as one might expect, overall it was yummy.

We visited early evening prior to going to the Barbican. I ordered a beef dopiaza and shami kebabs for starter. My friend had a meat balti dish and chicken chaat as a starter. We also had popadoms and pickle tray. We were the only diners in the restaurant. To put it mildly my shami kebabs were very small, awful, dry and obviously warmed up from the previous day. My fellow diner said the chicken chaat was tasteless. My dopiaza was not up to what I am used to, high on onions very little meat content. My friend said his Balti was bland. To top it all a waiter leaned over me and started to wipe the table down while we were chatting and finishing our. Our bill came to over £70. They wouldn’t survive in my hometown of Bradford.

Take away -1st time ordering from here. Not disappointed, lovely food, still hot enough to eat straight away-a bonus as I don't have a microwave😊 Will definately order again.

I used to frequent this Indian restaurant in the late 90's. It was fabulous then and glad to see that it is still going strong. Well Done, staff were always great. Swift & Sure

My dad used to take me here as a kid and it was so good. I've just moved back to York and thought I'd see if it was still good and the flavours and quality wasn't like i remembered. There was a lot of oil surrounding the curry and the flavours weren't very strong. It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't the best.

The paneer in the saag paneer was sour, so presumably off. The passanda was bland although medium spice ordered. Bhajis tasted good, as did the rice. Quick delivery.

Truly the best curry we've had in a long time, very tasty and good portions. We asked for a timed delivery and it arrived when needed.

Great Indian food , lovely staff

My meal arrived crushed. Sauce all over the bag. No care given by the delivery driver at all. That being said the food was absolutely brilliant. Will definitely use again.

Its been a long while since I was in the Garden . Really, really tasty chicken tikka jalfrezi. After some disappointing curies elsewhere ( Ackbars in Leeds , Mumbai Lounge , York and various so so takeaways ) this reminded me why I like a good curry. I wont be away for so long next time.

Ive be going here since 1996 (not every week though) original people still work there who are so lovely. The food is amazing - glad to see its always busy even early on - had to wait some time for the food so glad the poppadoms had time to go down - but the food is worth the wait

Met up with friends Friday night whilst we were up for a big party on Saturday. The food was amazing. Staff are super friendly. Very good value for money. Will certainly revisit next time we're up in York.

A local favourite - excellent food either eat in or take out.

Unfortunately on this occasion the order was wrong. We were missing a chicken balti and instead there was a second vegetable curry. First time this has happened with Garden of India and we are regular customers. Disappointing.

Visited here recently, delicious food and friendly service, it only loses one star for the layout as not much privacy with the table layout etc but that won't stop us coming back again as everything else was spot on

Excellent. Very tasty Lamb Bhuna, cooked as I requested, on the spicy side. Tender lamb, neatly spiced sauce. Nice portion of pilau rice. Extra poppadum included and great pickle tray. Arrived very quickly, hot and delivered by a friendly female driver. Very impressed. Will be back soon.

We had the most wonderful meal. The food was delicious and the service was brilliant even for a busy Saturday night. We normally have take away which is also excellent but thought we would dine and so glad we did. Can't wait to come back again!

Came late and was cold! Not happy

Its ok, but definiately not a 4 or higher. This is a competent curry house, but again medium is definiately mild. There is simply too much choice on the menu and as a result everything tastes moderately bland. When we should experience a stunning diversity of taste. Disappointed

We hadn't booked and the restaurant was more than happy to find us a table. The staff were polite, food came out in good time and tasted great. Definitely worth a visit if you like a good ole fashioned indian restaurant.

Fantastic evening meal. Food excellent, staff welcoming and pleasant. Lots of returning customers in the restaurant which is always a good sign. Staff also appeared to know everyone and made us all feel like family. Thanks for a lovely evening.

Excellent food as always & quick delivery

Excellent service, friendly and helpful and the drinks and poppadums arrived really quickly. Starters were all good (Onion bhaji, chicken tikka, prawn puree). Main courses were great - the garlic chilli chicken was rated particularly highly. Rice and nan bread also good. We even got a couple of complimentary Baileys!

Group of 4 travellers from Melbourne, Australia who didn’t have a reservation on a busy night. The staff were so accommodating finding us a table. The service was fantastic and the food one of the best Indian meals we have had. If you are ever in York it is well worth the visit

Had just been to the Barbican to see a concert. Although they closed at 10pm, they accomadated us, which we appreciated. Food was lovely and we didt feel rushed. Would recommend.

Absolute top marks ! Used to live near, this used to be my local curry house. It was amazing many years ago. Dropped in tonight on the way home, and if anything it's better than it once was. Myself and my partner have sampled most curry houses in york including Mumbai lounge. This is the best by far, it was years ago and it still is today! Great food , great price and lovely staff. Can't wait to come back !!!!! Thank you 😊
