Fredericks Restaurant in Islington

We had not been here for many years, mainly because, as vegetarians there was minimal choice. However , they now have a really quite imaginative separate vegetarian menu. We were impressed, by both the choices and the execution/presentation. We thought the service top notch throughout, with a genuine welcome , and engaged and attentive waiting staff. You feel you are having a relaxed up-market dining experience. There was a really pleasant vibe to the whole evening.

We received a warm welcome. Service was efficient and friendly. We both had the crab salad to start which u wish I had ordered as a main. It was sooo delicious. My friend had the lamb and I had the tuna. Both were devoured. I’ve been here a few times now and it’s always excellent

Excellent food, ambience is lovely and the building is beautiful. There’s plenty of choice on the menu and we’re offered more sides and bread. Staff are friendly and accommodating.

Awful service, mediocre food and long waiting time. Avoid this restaurant. It’s gone down hills. I wish the management team listen to customers’ feedback and respond to it well. I won’t be returning.

Our first time at Fredricks and not a typical experience because it was a friend's milestone birthday and had booked the private room upstairs, for about 20 of us. Consequently we had pre-ordered from a set menu, with a really good selection of fis, veggie and meat options. The scallop starter was apparently amazing. All of the food was excellent and beautifully presented. As we were in the private room we had our own staff who served us all evening and were attentive but not intrusive. It was a super evening, I would love to go back to enjoy the a la carte restaurant downstairs.

Last night was an early birthday celebration for my daughter, and as usual, Frederick’s did not disappoint. As soon as we walked through the door the welcome and service was impeccable. Throughout the evening, as busy as the restaurant was, this service continued. Our meals, from starters to desserts absolutely delicious. I had the scallops to start and salmon en crouet, so tasty. Each course was served at a steady pace, no rush for our perfect evening. Honestly we cannot recommend Frederick:s highly enough. Value wise the bill was what we had expected. Not over the top. Great value for a restaurant that’s excellent in every way!

The menu included a range of options, but for this diner the descriptions of some dishes were incomplete - for example, why not mention that the venison carpaccio includes cheese flakes? The round tables seemed to work well for groups of say six to eight, so good for small parties. The food and service were somewhat perfunctory and table water should have been topped up more frequently.

We have been going to Fredericks for 20 years as a special treat. Unfortunately this time we were really disappointed. We had a 7.30pm booking with friends for a pre Christmas meal. Starters were lovely, main courses disappointing. The fillet of beef was tough and chewy and desert wasn’t very nice at all. All in all a very disappointing evening. Come on Fredericks sort this out !

Excellent lunch with friends. Thought taking our orders was a bit slow but we weren’t in a hurry. Once we’d ordered food served after what seemed like an appropriate gap. Restaurant had filled up and service was efficient and enthusiastic. Two ate from the set lunch menu and two from a la carte, with a bottle of wine total bill £241 which given the good service, room ambience and setting, and high quality of food , was excellent value.Good time had by all. Definitely would go here again.

We hadn’t been to this restaurant for 25 years and had really fond memories of when we lived in Islington. Food and service were fantastic. Stuffed courgette flower was delicious. Was sat at a table where the closed french windows to the garden were behind me - there was a draft and the room was cold. When trying to order a main course the waiter kept telling me everything would take over half an hour to cook. I think this was to get me to order a starter. But I wanted to order a main & a dessert. Finally I chose the lamb chops. One was very pink, the other 2 over cooked. All were tough! When taking the dessert order the waitress didn’t know the difference between an ice cream ‘ a sorbet! She had to call over a waiter to answer the question. Service was very slow. I’ve eaten here many times and it has always been good. In fact I wrote a review only a month ago saying how superb this restaurant was. This visit was very disappointing.

My recent experience was pleasant but didn’t live up to the previous times I’ve eaten at Fredericks, which were outstanding. The service was lovely and most of the food was good, but my duck breast dish was disappointing in flavour and texture and the Club Room was uncomfortably chilly. If I return, I’d ask to be in the main restaurant which feels much more intimate for a date.

I have eaten here quite a few times. The ambience is always excellent. This time I ate in the gardens. The food is wonderful especially the fish. The staff are good & friendly.

We've been to Fredericks many times over the last 20 years. The service rates as about average given the prices. It varies quite a lot between visits. On our most recent visit, it took about 30 minutes for our food order to be taken, for which the waiter apologised. The food was above average, though not exceptional. My main criticism is that the restaurant fails to keep up with the times and has a very limited selection of vegan options. And if you want vegan desert, it's sorbet for you.

We hired the club room for 40 people for a work's event. Everyone had such an amazing time. The venue was amazing, with beautiful doors opening onto the garden and terrace making the venue really light and airy as well as having an outdoor space to have drinks on which is difficult to come by in London. The food was amazing, each dish we had was to the highest level despite there being 40 people to prepare them for. Frank and Amina made the whole event run smoothly and effortlessly which just put the cherry on top. I would recommend Frederick's to anyone in the future!

We turned up on spec, as we were staying in Islington and knew of this restaurant by reputation. We were lucky to get a table and it was one of the best dining experiences we have had. We loved the ambiance of the place, the service was superb and the good delicious. Worth every penny!

This is a great place. The staff are lovely the outside space is amazing, especially for somewhere so close to central London. More importantly, the food is fantastic. I had the lamb chops which were some of the best I’ve ever had big well cooked and flavoured on the barbecue. Difficult to fault would highly recommend.

An incredibly night, airy and bright restaurant with a huge glass-topped area at the back, plus small garden. Eclectic menu with some extremely good dishes on par with the fanciest gastro pub you've eaten at. Service isn't the most amazing for the price point (we didn't have a dedicated waiter who was keeping an eye on us, and had to call on various people for various things like ordering desert, getting the bill, getting the card machine). Could be better organised.

Been to Fredricks before, it has a great ambience and is a good location in Islington. This time, it was just OK. We had a sloppy waiter, who got the order wrong, and cost them a Halibut we didn't order, we were offered it to share as the manager didn't want it t go to waste. So when everyone had finished my Duck arrived which I had ordered so I ate it on my own, and it wasn't great, very chewy and the fat uncooked, I ate it anyway as i was starving and couldn't be bothered re ordering. The waiter poured our wine instead of leaving it on the table and was so sloppy it was not true, dripped it all over the place and splashed some on one of our friends. You can do better!

Wonderful warm welcome! We arrived after the theatre on a cold midweek evening, so it was quite late, but there was no sense that we should hurry the meal. Staff were attentive and friendly, we all really enjoyed our food, and - as I had said the meal was part of a birthday celebration - there was an extra candle-lit dessert, a lovely touch. Truly, this place is a gem, staff were lovely, I will certainly return!

After a matinee at the Almeida theatre nearby we went for an early supper at Frederick's. From the moment we entered the Restaurant we were warmly welcomed and made to feel at home. I have wanted to come here for some time and I finally made it. I really liked the setting of the restaurant under the glass roof. I eat fish but not meat and prefer to be vegetarian where possible.We had the prawn and vegetable tempura (beautiful in taste but felt it was more of far eastern dish).The autum menu has only two choice of mains for vegetarians. I had the spinach and filo pastry. The service was good and the food quality is very high but I would liked more vegetarian options.

We eat here three weeks ago (lunch) and came away having had excellent food and service. Last Saturday night with four friends we went back. Something had gone very wrong. The food was either overcooked or cold (one dish sent back for that reason). We did not make a fuss because we wanted a pleasant relaxed evening with friends. We booked a table at Fredericks last Wednesday to take out our daughter who is moving into the area. It was a lovely evening with superb food and wine. The cured salmon was amazing and the lamb melted in the mouth. All of the staff were really friendly and engaging and really added to the ambience. We’ll definitely be back!

Delicious food, lovely ambience and friendly, professional service. An oasis of calm set back from the hustle and bustle of the Camden Passage. There's a lot to this place. a bar, the main restaurant, a very pleasant outdoor area, a room for private functions that led out onto it's own small terrace..I hear it is popular for weddings and I can imagine that.

Frederick's has been our Go To Restaurant for special occasions for over 20 years, including weddings, anniversaries, engagements and birthdays. It never disappoints and this time - celebrating the return of friends from Malaga - was no different. The food spoiled us for choice and the sommelier helped us choose delicious wines we would never have discovered on our own. Service and ambience impeccable as ever.

We was having a fantastic family lunch when suddenly a couple started to perform sexual acts on each other at the table, In view of the whole restaurant, there was a table of women out for a pre wedding lunch near to us and this couple, the girls complained which led to know result or resolution, we also see the manager laughing with the man of the couple. This is not the way to deal with the situation and is not something you would expect from such a nice restaurant.

My son and daughter in law chose Fredericks as their venue for their wedding. Everything was perfect. The room ( although difficult to walk up if elderly or infirm) was simple but tasteful, the staff were attentive from arrival to when we left . Offering a coffee or drink when we dropped flowers etc off and returned to collect the cake the following morning. The outside area was great for photographs and the location is fantastic .

First great evening meal out for a group of friends after lockdown. Two tables for 11 of us. Food was great and service excellent - particularly from Jason the person who mostly served us. He was attentive, knowledgeable, personable and our pre-ordered food delivered to us individually as expected. On top of the great food he was a bonus to the evening.

In these difficult times, when it can be hard to meet up with family, Fredericks have organised a great marquee solution. Obviously you can only have the table for 2 hours, which was a slight issue for us as the 1 hour journey from Essex took over 2 hours so we were 30 minutes late. However, the staff were really welcoming, the food was fantastic, cocktails were great but probably the best bit was the somelier. A gentleman called Erwan Gouiffes, who comes along and asks you a list of questions and then recommends a wine for you. He chose a white Portuguese wine for me that I've never had before and it was excellent (Duas Quintas - Douro 2018). He managed to do something similar with a red for my son. I think that Erwan was a great asset to the meal overall. The questions were fun and it was a really good way to try a new wine. Yes, the meal was a bit rushed but that was our fault not theirs. If I had one complaint, it is that the biscuits that came with the cheese were stale but I wouldn't normally eat more than one or two anyway so it wasn't a problem. I would 100% go back to Fredericks either during the pandemic or when life returns to something like normal.

I’ve not sure why this place has rather been beyond my radar for so long. Maybe it’s because it’s been around for so long, judging my my experience. Here today has nothing to prove, and feels like something of an institution whilst so many younger upstarts have successfully vied for attention? Or perhaps the rather cramped and nondescript front reminiscent of an East End boozer which gives no clue as to the rather large modern airy spaces behind, comprising at least three rooms and today a marquee providing repast for all the guests at a wedding reception. I opted for the three-course menu which given its longevity and adaptability - today it doubled up as a special menu for the London restaurant festival - is perhaps something of an institution in itself. Each course has three choices. Mine were salmon rillettes with pickled vegetables, followed by chateaubriand served medium rare as requested with not only chips but also the freshest of broccoli spears. Some nice touches: bearnaise was nicely served on a white soup spoon of the variety usually seen in a Chinese restaurant. Salt beneath a layer of perspex was fully grained sea salt. But for me the piece de resistance wax a panna cotta with fruit on top swimming in a compote. Not only is there an impressive wove selection but also 500ml bottles of beer including the Doom Bar I chose. Service was a well-oiled machine with courses taken to serving stations before being dispatched to table. And there’s even some displays of surprisingly pleasing contemporary art.

El sommelier nos hizo grandes recomendaciones sobre el vino y nos dejó degustar varias copas por el precio de dos o tres. El servicio del día en sí fue impecable. Todos salieron llenos y entusiasmados con la comida, y el lugar en sí se sintió muy seguro y bien desinfectado con los camareros con máscaras. El gerente del restaurante fue lo suficientemente amable como para permitirnos traer nuestro propio pastel, se nos permitió decorar la habitación con nuestras propias flores y globos y apreciamos mucho las longitudes que hicieron para ser flexibles.

Impromptu idea to have a late summer Saturday lunch in the best alfresco dining spot in Islington. Luckily, they could accommodate an early seating. We loved all the food, the ragu with pappardelle the standout dish. Service was beyond. Service is so professional and warm.

Visited Frederick's with my sisters yet again to celebrate 2 birthdays. As ever staff were friendly and very attentive. Great service! The food was absolutely amazing! And that is the reason we always return. Highly recommend it.

Es perfectamente comprensible que el menú descargable sea muy limitado debido a las restricciones de horario de apertura y de Covid. Esperando personal todo enmascarado y muy atento. Pero me sorprendió que nuestra pequeña mesa rectangular (reservada hace mucho tiempo) no ofreciera la oportunidad de tener el mínimo distanciamiento social. Esta experiencia contrasta mucho con otros restaurantes, ciertamente pequeños, en los que he estado en los últimos meses. Mejor consultar disponibilidad mesa redonda / ovalada para grupos de 3/4 antes de reservar.

Frederick's es uno de los pocos restaurantes europeos modernos consistentemente buenos alrededor de Upper Street, durante los veinte años que he vivido en el área, siempre ha entregado excelente comida, una carta de vinos accesible y un servicio eficiente y amigable. Actualmente durante la pandemia de Coronavirus tiene un menú un poco restringido, pero el ambiente sigue siendo excelente, el personal atento y la comida muy buena.

Voy a cenar con amigos, y la comida es maravillosa. Y luego, a veces, después del trabajo, voy solo, a tomar una copa de champán rosado, con vistas al jardín si puedo. Lo que hace que ambas experiencias sean especiales no es solo la calidad de la comida y la excelencia del vino, sino la calidez del personal y el ambiente del lugar, música fresca, gran jardín y sensación de amplitud, una institución de Islington. ¡Que dure mucho!

Mi primera visita a Frederick's y definitivamente no es la última. Una reserva a las 6 pm nos permitió tener el menú previo al teatro que tiene un valor fantástico. Las primeras impresiones fueron excelentes, la zona del bar es elegante y acogedora. El área del restaurante es hermosa, las mesas están generosamente separadas entre sí. El servicio fue absolutamente de primera categoría, lo mejor que recuerdo haber recibido en mucho tiempo, súper cortés, siempre atento, amable y eficiente. Agua completada, vino completo cuando sea necesario, pan adicional ofrecido. El ambiente era encantador y elegante. La comida también fue fantástica. Es una gran recomendación mía.

Excellent place! The food is excellent, the service too! And la cerise sur le gâteau, there is very good advices by a young french somelier with an excellent card! So many good wines!Food lover, wine lover, or if you just looking for a top service crew don’t hesitate a minute !

My wife and I got the three course Valentine's menu, I had the beef carpiciao, beef Wellington and cheese cake. The beef Wellington was a nice surprise as it was not traditional but more like a steak. All three courses tasted exceptional. Beautiful restaurant inside, we will like to try again but in a different area to where we were seated. Staff very professional also.

I have enjoyed meals here previously but tonight I experienced slow service, a weak starter and over cooked fish fillet served with bones. Wouldn’t recommend

We had dinner at Fredericks for a party of 6 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the who experience. A special mention goes to the sommelier who knew a lot about wines and we asked him to select wines especially good value for money ... and we were surprised how good they were especially for the relative cheap price at around £30.All in all a great experience on that Saturday evening so highly recommend according to all in our party on six.

Whatever the food's like (and it's pretty good), the experience of Frederick's is reliable - you feel spoiled, and you feel as if you're somewhere much more expensive, with wine waiters, and truffles with the coffee and all that shtick. I was a little disappointed in my venison main, which tasted just a bit too gamey for my taste, but my companion's duck looked wonderful. Decent value house wine, too.

A huge thank you to Frederick's for holding and organising our recent wedding. It was a truly memorable and perfect day from the ceremony, drinks reception, dinner and party afterwards. We were fortunate enough to have the whole place to ourselves. Everything was perfect and we couldn't fault anything. Such an amazing venue with different spaces for different needs. There is plenty of space for dancing and also quieter areas and comfortable areas for chatting. Perfect as ideal for all age ranges from young to elderly. And the food was fantastic too.

We chose Fredericks for dinner with 12 friends to kick off Christmas. Great service from the moment we arrived, the menu was perfect and satisfied everyone. The food & wine never disappoints.

Superb service, excellent food, and amazingly the staff have time to chat so that rather than being anonymous figures rushing between kitchen and table, they become acquaintences one is glad to meet. General impression is of eating with family (only the food is probably better !) I can't recommend Frederick's more highly.

We went there once again with friends just before Christmas. We try to eat here at least three or four times a year. I cannot fault the service, food or ambience of the place. We are always warmly welcomed and made to feel at home by the staff.

Fredericks is an Islington institution and we have been several times over the years. The room is lovely and service was friendly without being intrusive and the food average to good. Your bill can soon mount up and our meal for 4 came in at £125 per head though you can eat here for a lot less. It is the champagne and wine what does it with London markups!! Oh well we had a great evening and recommend this place if you are in the area. As I said food was average to good and at £125 a head including service not a steal. Still it was a great night out.

I'm sure that the business event profited from me more than the restaurant. The ambience is very good and the service was well organised. Very modern and well lit interior. I had a broccoli and quinoa (or spelt? - can't remember) starter which was very average and bland - for mains, I has some fish which was average - I think that it was sea bass; it was accompanied by a glutinous and extremely buttery potato dish which I left. It wasn't a great business/event experience from a culinary point of view, but many people at the event had eaten at Fredericks before and recommended that I go there as a private diner, as apparently it's very good.

A truly excellent meal in a relaxed yet fine dining setting. Very tasty food served by professionals. This is a long established family restaurant & it exudes the very best of that gendre. Great !

This was my first visit to Fredericks since 2003 and it was a pleasure to have lunch here once again. The staff were friendly and attentive and the seating area is still as bright and charming as I remembered. Four of us attended and all had the '50th Birthday Menu' which was on offer for the celebration of 50 years of the restaurant. The menu had a choice of wine to accompany each course, which was excellent. The food was very good, I had the Lamb and Cheese to follow. Need to visit here again soon.

Lovely place to eat with friendly and helpful staff. Food is great and reasonably priced but portions on the fixed courses menu are rather small.

Went here for dinner with colleagues. Good selection of choices, possibility to get a 2 or 3 course menu as well. Good wines and pleasant staff. Food quality was good, I had the fried shrimp for starter, delicious. Moon fish filet for main matched that.

Thank you all for providing the wonderful food, vino and service at the private 70th birthday party we attended on Sunday 10th.

My wife and I were treated to dinner here by my brother in law and what a fantastic night we had. The food was of a very high standard, the service was superb everything about the place oozed quality. Each of us had different meals and each of us were extremely happy with their choices. My lamb was cooked to perfection,as was the beef dish my wife had. I could not find fault with this place, well only one, it is a tad expensive and would not be a restaurant to eat in regularly unless you are very well paid. However as a treat it's absolutely perfect.

Good food, most attentive service, impressive wine list. We recently had a family lunch here and can’t fault the service nor the food. We’ll be returning soon. On the side note: The manager also informed us that it is the 50th anniversaire of the restaurant this year which makes it even more impressive to stand through times in this cut throat business. That in itself tells you that these guys know something.
