Lovely beach front location. Staff very friendly and food was good as usual - lovely big jacket potatoes! We look forward to going back.

Once again, what a lovely lunch we had at Flags. Went for my sister’s birthday & the owners Leslie & Mark could not have been more welcoming, even gave us a bottle of wine & cake for my sister s birthday. The food & drinks are really reasonably priced & the food was home cooked & lovely. Thanks for a great day ☀️

Brilliant food karen is great especially with my dog Molly if I’m not careful she’d take her home. Karen’s a great asset to this cafe. Always a great smile and welcome. Food comes out quickly molly likes the dog sausages. One thing I’d like to see is umbrellas if weathers not windy as now weather is changing there’s always a chance of a shower and then your stuck eating when it’s raining. But I couldn’t fault this place 10/10 not sure when it closes for winter I will ask girls when I next see them Karen here’s a photo of molly I think Karen will know who molly is

We visited again this week with our dog, Quincy. The owner, Lesley, greeted us warmly and treated Quincy to a sausage sundae. There are always sausages and dog friendly cakes for the fur babies. We had a relaxing coffee and bacon sandwich as we looked out to sea. Always a joy to visit the Flags Cafe when we are in the area.

I have to say, this is the best licenced cafe on the beach. Service excellent, with a smile and the food is really good. I've had many a breakfast there and the standard is always high. The coffee is excellent and I would have no problem recommending this place to anyone. Lovely location too.

What a beautiful quirky cafe by the sea. The food and refreshments are as lovely as the staff and stunning sea views.

Flags is amazing - The food is really outstanding, always freshly prepared, hot, tasty and such generous portions sizes. Cakes are all homemade and added bonus the Cafe is licensed for that cheeky bottle of wine. Often there is live music which is fantastic - situated right on the Beach. Dogs are welcome and the owner always makes sure the fur Babies are well looked after with her specially made sausages. They cater for all dietary requirements and nothing is too much trouble in this spotless welcoming establishment.

We visit Flags cafe on a regular basis and have always found it to be welcoming and best of all dog friendly. All the food is lovely and fresh and cooked when ordered. 🍰🍪 The cakes are all homemade and delicious. 🎂 The owner, Lesley is such a sweet lady 💕 We have a rescue dog who is scared of people and will bark at everyone. He has never barked at Lesley, she is the only person he has never barked at. Of course he does know that she makes pup cakes and sausages for all the fur babies that visit. An excellent place to visit on a day out at Holland on Sea 🌊

Freshly prepared food, gorgeous homemade cakes and freshly brewed coffee, perfect. Great choices even for the vegans , great prices, friendly and great banter. Always made to feel welcome, both us and the dogs.

After a nice walk along the beach towards Frinton, we returned to Flags for a welcome lunch, as they say the cafe is not fast food as everything is freshly prepared. Portions were generous, very good value and delicious. Staff were fabulous, would highly recommend and will definitely go back again.

Great little place food always very good Leslie will look after you and on a nice day the views are amazing breakfast is perfect but she will always go out of her way to make it a good experience

having quite severe mobility problems I htought I'd never make it to Flags but a zig zag path was built not far from the café. It took me over half an hour to get down but there are areas at each turn to rest. I had an excellent coffee and the ice cream is the best ever. I haven't made it since because in bad weather the café doesn't open (outdoor seating only) and they're closed on Monday which was the last day I was there with good weather. Just look for the flag flying on the clifftop - 'if the flag's flying, they're frying' and a whole lot more!

After dog walk on the beach we went to the Flags Cafe (easily spot able because of the fluttering flags!) The menu was good but I opted for the all day breakfast which was reasonably priced.When the food came it was well presented and the quality of the ingredients was far superior to any cafe I have been to before. Excellent sausages and bacon especially.Then had a vanilla ice cream again expecting usual cafe ice cream ..but no absolutely delicious ice cream. On top of that the staff were excellent.Definitely a reason to take the dog back to Holland on sea for a walk.

Very nice cafe, right on the seafront of Holland on sea, our two large rolls(1 x tuna 1 x cheese n ham) were very well filled, a bit of side salad as garnish would have been nice but nonetheless great value, we enjoyed the coffee too.

Great place with friendly staff right on the beach. Everybody was very helpful even though they were very busy due to the visitors for the Air Show.

Been going here for years, 1 - Proper food, good portions good value good all round proper cafe. no micro deconstructed nonsense, 2 - Warm welcome, with just the right amount of cheeky banter, Lesley and Roy what a duo.3 - Great position away from the busiest parts of the beach and plenty of seating.4 - almost forgot the home made cakes, Just a old proper decent cafe.

Great food on a very busy Saturday afternoon. Jacket potatoes were huge and tasty and came with lovely coleslaw and salad .

I visit flags cafe whenever I visit Holland on sea beach. The food is amazing and fresh. The service I receive is fabulous from each and every member of staff even when they are rushed off their feet. 100% recommend. Xx

What an amazing beach front cafe, we visited here 3 times whilst on our staycation and it was great. Service is really friendly and the food and drinks were spot on - especially the breakfast! The outside space was great and our dog was able to relax by the table while we had a drink. They even bought him a sausage out which was very nice! You should really give this a visit if you are in Holland on sea.

Lesley kindly catered for our Ruby Anniversary. Weather was bad so she prepared and delivered a fantastic spread to our home even though the cafe was shut due to poor weather. So much gorgeous food both hot and cold. Can't recommend this cafe enough. Friendly service and lovely food. The breakfasts are superb and always fleshly cooked and hot. Can I just say a massive thankyou to Lesley and her team. We was there on Sunday afternoon for my Parents 50th Wedding anniversary. Due to Covid our plans were scuppered but thanks to Flags they were rescued. They reserved us 3 tables and could not have been more accommodating, and made us all feel very welcome. The food was excellent and the bottles of Prosecco and range of beers and wine made for a great afternoon. They even made us a lovely cake as a gift. So thankyou again Lesley and the team, we cannot reccomend it highly enough....

We visited Holland on Sea just after lockdown had lifted. My little two were desperate for ice creams, and we stumbled acoss Flags Cafe on our search. The owner informed us that the Cafe was not yet ready to open, however when she noticed two sad faces she said that we could come in and choose an ice cream. When we came to pay, she gave them to us free of charge as she did not have her till up and running. What a lovely lady and such an act of kindness. We will definitely return to Flag Cafe on our next trip and look forward to experiencing the food. Thank you so very much!

because I have very limited mobility I didn't think I'd ever get to Flags but then I found a zig zag path down the cliff and was able to very slowly make my way there. Staff and customers couldn't have been nicer. Beautiful view of the sea - sunshine dancing on the water like diamonds. Hopefully I'll manage it again next summer!

we visited here for lunch and the food was fantastic, i was amazed that they catered for vegans and vegetarians and had plenty of choices available. we ended up returning on many occasions as the value for money and service was 5 star all the way. i would even travel for 2 hours to eat there again it was that good. Thank you for some good breakfasts, lunch and cakes

Whenever I visit Clacton I choose to head to the beaches at Holland on Sea, in part due to the existence of this excellent cafe. Visited during the pandemic and they have had an effective way to ensure SD and a clean safe environment which I appreciated including access to sanitizing gell.As far as the menu is concerned there is an excellent selection of ice creams and sweets etc but also an extensive range of healthy options cooked to order. I'm no drinker but it is a licensed premises too.

Wow what can I say.... about this amazing place that’s situated in the Beautiful location of Holland on Sea. Seafront seating makes the experience even better as you watch the sun going down. The staff are friendly and made sure you felt welcome and the serve was impeccable. On offer is a large range of drinks along with delicious cakes and other treats to sample. I tried the homemade Coffee and Walnut cake- yummy!! My main meal was lamb shanks in mint gravy and Dauphinoise potatoes as I sipped a glass of wine. Well worth a visit. Suzanne and family

We are planning to move to Holland-on-Sea in the near future and stumbled across Flags Cafe whilst walking along the promenade yesterday afternoon. This was their first day of opening following lockdown. We had a hot drink and the cherry bakewell cake which were both excellent. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I'm sure we will be regular customers once we have moved.

We stopped here on a walk from clacton to frinton. Great location, right on the beach, and plenty to choose from. Friendly staff , good service and reasonable price.

Wonderful views while you either eat, drink tea or coffee or sit watching the world go by with a pint of beer the staff are friendly and all dogs are welcome this has plenty of seats and tables but all are outside , thank you

We often head down here for something to eat & drink.The cakes menu is always changing so it never gets boring & they have cold beers on tap so the kids can play on the new beach while we chill and watch them.Lesley & Mark always make us feel welcome.Definitely a place to take your family time and time again

Headed along last week on a bike ride and decided to stop for a pint. Nice pint of San Miguel on Draught at a decent price.

We eat at this cafe regularly, just being a 10 minute stroll from where we live in Holland. There is no better café in Clacton, freshly cooked food and friendly staff. With the added bonus of being licensed, relaxing in the sun, next to the superb Holland beach, looking out to sea with a cold beer and wine is recommended.The service is outstanding, especially at the busiest of times (and it really does get busy!).Our family visit recently (4 adults and two small boys) was the most enjoyable of afternoons. Spending time on the beach, with food and drink so close to hand was a perfect seaside treat. But not without mishap, when a small boys delicious ham and cheese sandwich ended up face first in the sand, without a bite being taken!On reordering the sandwich, no money was asked for.A special thank you to Lesley for being so generous.
 Mark, his family and staff work so hard in making their customers feel welcome and well looked after.Looking forward to many more visits, which will be even more enjoyable and accessible with the new disabled access path and walkway from Kings Avenue to the lower promenade.

Visited The Flag Cafe on the beach front for an all day breakfast. A long wait but well worth it. All food is cooked fresh to order and served by happy staff. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and they serve a decent hot cup of coffee. Whilst waiting you can enjoy the view of the sea.

I love this place. Some great veggie and vegan options available, reasonably priced. The service is always friendly and the location is lovely, right on the beach. Very popular with locals. I try to avoid single use plastic and they always agree to serve my order in a glass or on a plate instead. Would be great to see them adopt plastic free takeaway packaging.

Had burger and chips ,bacon roll. Very slow long wait. Wasn't worth bothering fatty bacon . Won't go their again clacton has better cafes.

What a great little gem of a place right on the beach. The staff are all very welcoming serving lovely hot & cold food & drinks & as the only place on the beach it was very refreshing to find we were not having to pay a premium for the location. They even put out an extra table so my sister & I could sit in the sun. This place really made our day & we will most definitely be returning...Thanks guys.

Cup of coffee to rib eye steak. Free WiFi. Plenty of outside seating with slopes for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Licensed too. Sit and watch the sea and the passers by.

My boyfriend and I found the flags cafe after a nice walk from clacton station, we decided to walk down to the beach opposite our hotel as we had an hour before check in time, thinking that we could have a nice cup of tea and maybe some lunch if it was decent, I sat down on the bench outside, we took off our bags and my boyfriend just about to go in to order when a women came up to us and demand we leave now! and that "our benches are for our customers" ( we were the only costomers there) turned her back and walked away before I could say anything, so rude, I recommend you order within 2 seconds of glancing at the place or maybe just find somewhere better.

Love this place . When the flag is flying at the top of the cliff then they are open . I usually stop for a coffee when I go to the beach to collect shells to decorate. The food always looks so appealing and reasonably priced.

We spent many a late afternoon at Flags in the 2018 summer, and have looked forward to it opening again this year. The food is really nice, a great selection of drinks, great view, and lovely owners and staff. Looking forward to another great year in the sun at Flags

Sitting outside the Flag cafe in the Lovely April sunshine, the kids are playing on the beach after having a delicious lunch and I’m full up on their delicious salted caramel cheesecake (it’s a must, it’s huge and so reasonably priced) the staff in here are so accommodating and will bend over backwards for you, they even provided the kids with buckets for their shells. This place is a true gem and a must if you are going to the beach, I’m a proper foodie and love fresh home cooked food and this definitely ticks all the boxes. We always go to the flag cafe most days in the warmer weather and find staff there very friendly and helpful and the food there is so yummy.

Have been visiting the flag just this year but what a find, weather just a tea or coffee to a full on roast dinner, you can even have a beer or 2

I am currently sat outside Flags cafe on a beautiful late September day. Being Vegan it's very difficult to find tasty food of a high standard. This has not been my experience here. I was served up a hearty meal, with all the trimmings and a hot creamy soya latte to wash it down with. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff here as they are all very accommodating and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend this Cafe.

Love the staff, so friendly. You can't beat the fantastic views, the cafe is situated on the lower promenade. The food is gorgeous. Just started serving Sunday roasts, proper home-cooked food, all fresh, presented lovely and such generous portions. This is living the life, love Flags Cafe. A well-situated sea front café with excellent sea views. Family friendly and easily accessible from the beach. Usual fare of fried foods and/or cream teas. Good service with friendly owners and staff. As it is located on the lower promenade check that the café flag is flying at the head of the steps to the beach. If not flying then café is closed.

Having a walk today along sea front we come across this cafe so we stopped for a coffee. It's a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by on a nice sunny day. They have a large selection of hot or cold food, cakes ect they even sell wine and beer if you fancy a tipple. No where to sit inside but There's plenty of seating outside the cafe, or they do takeaways as well.

My sister and I visited flags 4 x last week for breakfast. The service was second to none, the food was delicious and the prices very reasonable. The staff were very patient when we asked for changes to the set breakfast and were especially tolerant of our two dogs, providing shade and water for them. It really is an idyllic spot to while away a few hours on a sunny morning and I really shouldn't be telling you about this because we want to it to ourselves! Special shout out to the lovely young waiter who made our visits extra special.

Visited last Sunday which was an extremely hot day. Had never been here before and assumed there would just be a selection of sandwiches, crisps, ice creams etc. What a surprise I had in store! Such an extensive menu for such a small place. Yes, it was busy (it was Sunday, baking hot and lunchtime so go figure) but that gave us a chance to decide what to order. My husband decided on the All Day Breakfast and I had the tuna salad with a portion of chips to share. I was delighted to see they had alcohol for sale and ordered a bottle of wine. The bill came to approximately £23, the bottle of wine was an amazing £10. The food came out and the quality was amazing. My salad was so fresh and I reckon I had half a whole tuna (I might be exaggerating but it was huge!) and the other half was impressed with his breakfast. The wine was beautifully chilled and it was nice to have proper glasses to drink from. We were part of a larger group who had ordered separately and they all enjoyed their meals too. I would have no hesitation in recommending Flags Cafe and would love to visit again when I’m in the area. For previous reviews who have mentioned the cafe being closed at times, it is right on the beach so I would imagine it can easily be affected by the weather. The staff we spoke to were great, under very busy circumstances but I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if you phoned ahead to check if they are open when you want to visit.

This was the 2nd visit this weekend, great food sensible prices, great staff especially the 2 young members of the team, boy and girl. They were polite, efficient and sensible. Looking forward to coming back tomorrow

Great location on a lovely beach. Food was very good value for money a very very clean establishment with very helpful owners even down to cutting up the sausage for the Dog as we had a take away. Well done keep up the good work.

This cafe has on offer all you will want if looking for a casual meal or snack in Clacton. It is situated on a quieter part of the seafront at the Holland on Sea end. The menu is varied and everything is cooked on site and to perfection. The bacon, brie and cranberry Panini's are so tasty as were the other meals my family ordered. The staff are friendly, pleasant and obliging. I can not recommend this cafe highly enough. Don't miss it when in Clacton. P.S. The dog loved her sausages served in her own dish!

I am just back home from a walk on the coast of Holland on Sea with two of my grandsons, one is 8 years of age and the other is 14. We stopped at Flags Café for something to eat & drink, our order was brought to the table by a very happy young lady my grandsons do not normally finish a plate full of food but this time they surprised me. My 8 year old grandson said!! Granddad that's the best chicken nuggets I have ever had. Which was very nice to here because that is what he eats a lot of. Anyway all the food & drinks are very good. A very good price. The Flags Café is very clean and well worth sitting there just to look out to sea. Oh yes I forgot its a bonus as you can take your dog(s) there. And the owners were very nice. If your walking up the prom give it a go, its worth a try. Alan G

My sister has been raving about flags for forever now. Today we finally got round to visiting it. Have to say it was lovely and the rock cake was gorgeous! Recommended.

We called on here having seen the advert on the flag flying on the main road. A great little spot, with pleasantly relaxing views of the sea and lovely, polite, young staff. Having travelled most of the day, this was a very welcoming spot and the sandwiches were lovely and fresh and the cold beer wonderful.

Cuando fui a ser servido al miembro del personal dijo que 'bien' y no parecen tener mucha idea acerca de lo que estaba haciendo. No sé los precios. Mi café era débil y los precios eran altos. No es un parche en el café muy agradable a lo largo de la playa más hacia paterna que recomiendo encarecidamente

Este café es precioso, el personal es muy amable, que normalmente vaya aquí para una salchicha sarni tostado y un café o a veces un 99 con un flake! Su agradable para sentarse fuera aquí en un día agradable y tienen vista al mar. El edificio es muy cuidada y un aspecto moderno y fresco con respecto a la mayoría de cafés frente al mar, este sin duda es el mejor!

Came to Clacton to see family stop at flags for a snack and a coffee. First time I've been but will come again. One of the best sausage sandwiches I've had in a long time. Plus friendly staff.

Dos de nosotros llamado hoy, parece haber gente nueva. Muy limpia y agradable para sentarse fuera y disfrutar de té, etc. muy buena ubicación en el paseo marítimo más baja al lado de la playa. Excelente, recomiendo este café.

Great little cafe on the beach. Food excellent very fresh. Staff very friendly and helpful. They serve wine as well as the usual refreshments. Has been very busy since the beach improvements. Such a pity it doesn't open in the winter as I am sure with the new beach there would be plenty of trade.

Such a wonderful cafe in a beautiful part of Holland-on-Sea, Clacton. The food is delicious and the staff warm and friendly. I love their veggie brekkie and they also do other veggie options. Prices are excellent too and what's more it is dog friendly.

Fantastic sea front café with commanding view of lovely beaches. Looked after by the lovely Lesley, Bev and Joe. My Dog Riley and I were made to feel very welcome indeed. Good coffee, food and fine conversation. I will be going back for sure and recommend this establishment

MRS ECCLES CAKE!I was behind you in the cue, you chose mass produced Eccles cakes, because you didn't want to spend more on the home made cakes, you moaned the whole way through your experience, and DID eat most of them before complaining about them, the lady told you she didn't eat fruit, that's why she hadn't tried them, also, the reason you had them from behind the counter, was because fresh ones were kept in a box below, I wonder if you had had a good experience, wether you would of posted a compliment here?I very much doubt it!!!!

We called at Flags Café today for a snack and chose coffee and Eccles Cakes. The service was slow but we could accept that - it was the Eccles Cakes which were horrendous. There was one on the counter which looked fine but we were served with some from under the counter. When we bit into them there wasn't a currant in sight, just a sludge brown paste. We considered taking them back but there was a long queue so we decided to eat as much as we could manage. There was a lady clearing the tables so we asked her why the so called Eccles Cakes didn't have a trace of currants in them and her curt response was she wouldn't know as she never ate anything with fruit in. She then looked at what we had left and commented that we didn't seem to have done too badly and we should leave the rest as the birds would eat it. We weren't asking for a refund or anything, just a reason but the reply was so rude wedrank the rest of our coffee and left.There are any number of cafes and kiosks along this stretch of coast and we suggest you try any of the others!

Dog walking on Saturday with a friend, walked past Flags when the shop woman came and asked if we'd like any water for the dog (we hadn't even come in, just walking by). Lovely to be noticed and asked, I didn't need any but such a nice gesture. We walked by then on way back decide to stop for chips, I didn't go in but my friend did (I had the dog). We had our chips outside, lots of other friendly and chatty guests in and around the cafe. Yummy chips! I'd defo go again :)

Flags sits in a fabulous location on the lower promenade overlooking the beach. On a sunny day, you feel as though you could be sitting in the Med, soaking up the sunshine.The cafe offers a great food selection and can become extremely busy, particularly around lunchtimes (it also offers take-away cooked food).We visited every day over the bank holiday weekend and sampled a good range of dishes from the menu - all of which were freshly cooked. Superb!Have tried all of the cafes along the seafront and this one is by fay the best located, friendliest and serves the best food and drink.It's great to have such a fantastic place on our doorstep - long may you reign supreme!

Popped in for lunch on Tuesday, ordered scampi and chips and pie mash and liquor. Waitress came and apologised but no mash potatoe available so my husband opted for chips instead. Food arrived and it was lovely. Staff are so friendly and we were amazed that other customers were allowed to have their dogs with them which as dog owners ourselves we thought was great. This is a lovely cafe, nice and clean with friendly staff and great location. Would recommend to friends.

Great food and great staff. The best cafe food in Essex. Nothing is to much trouble. Will continue to go there regularly.just go down the steps opposite York road and turn right 100 yards. You will not regret eating there.

There is nothing I like more than a walk along the seafront in Holland-on-Sea, with a coffee stop along the way. I rarely get to enjoy this place though as it is never open when I go past at 10.30am - even if the seafront is heaving with walkers and buggies, and the sun has been up since 6am. They must miss out on so much business, but then it's likely that, like me, many just expect it not to be open so go to the cafe further towards the haven.The afternoon when we did go down, and it was open, we were disappointed with how many ice creams they had left - the forecast had been scorching for days, but they had failed to prepare adequately for this.

Four of us had breakfast, lovely sunny day, great new beach to look out onto, felt just like being on holiday! Very busy, but well worth the wait for freshly cooked homestyle food. Staff are efficient, attentive and polite. Thank you guys!

Lovely cafe, lovely food, lovely staff, apart form the chef who seems abit grumpy best cafe in Clacton by far & looking forward to our next visit.

The Flags Cafe is absolutely wonderful. Great location for chilling out. Food and service are top notch. Les, Mark and Joe are extremely friendly, polite and professional.

Nice to get The Flags Cafe back after Prom closed due to new Beach work but well worth it as sitting there in the Sun you could be in Spain ! Such a friendly place where dogs are welcome and the fresh cooked food is amazing & lots of it . Just a short walk from our Beach Hut we love The Flag !

It's great to see Flags open again after being forced to close by the local council during the beach rebuild last year. By far the best location along the sea front, the feeling is Mediterranean on a good sunny day. The food is as good as ever, all cooked freshly to order. Well worth a visit.

great little cafe, has a nice cafe menu, nothing fancy but tasty brit food, cakes and things also, even sells little bags of dog biscuits so you dont have to share your cake.sells flip flops and has an outside terrace looking over the sea, thought I was in Marbs for a minute. perfect after a nice walk on the beach.

Well at last we finally got to eat there again. Excellent breakfast, good quality food all freshly cooked. The downside is of course that means a bit of a wait. I do think they lose a lot of trade by not opening until around 11 on a Sunday morning

Beautiful view from the Flags Cafe. The owners Les and Mark are absolutely wonderful, nothing is too much for their customers. We have spent many hours sitting outside having tea, coffee, cold drinks and the cakes are absolutely the best I have ever tasted.
