I'm here eating a breakfast omelette so well presented its worthy of quadruple the £4.90 price. This restaurant is perfect in every way and certainly one of the best in its market. Nino and Anna run it and put their all into it.

My family love it here. They offer breakfast which is cheap and has a good selection from toast and spreads, porridge, omelette, big breakfast etc... They do lunch and evening meals. They have a good selection of food from fish, meats, vegetarian, burgers, soups and lots more. Good for couples, families, and large parties, sometimes better to book as the evenings and weekends are very busy. They open for Christmas. They also do bookings for Valentine's Day amongst other celebrations. Nice atmosphere. Staff are very friendly. Would recommend for anyone to go in and try.

The menu can be a little bit complicated here. At certain times you have a breakfast, lunch and a pasta menu along with a chalkboard of specials to consider. Add to this the option of 2 courses for £10, 3 for not much more and their willingness to do starters in main course portions and it can all start to get a bit tricky. However the staff are great and will patiently answer any questions. The food is excellent value for money and I always enjoy visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner (or if I get confused, some combination of all 3)

Living just round the corner, I have eaten here many times over the past year. The food is very reasonably priced for the quality. The set menu of 2 courses for a tenner or 3 for £13 is a bargain! They don't even stick the almost mandatory London 12.5% on top! I think that the waiting staff really make this place, friendly and with a real and sincere sense that nothing is too much trouble. I have experienced meals in Michelin starred establishments were the level of service was miles below what you can expect here. Is this the place to indulge the serious foody in you? No. It is definitely the place to go with a few mates to enjoy an evening that won't cost you the earth.

I've lost count of the number of times that I've eaten at Fifty Six. I live locally so it's easy to visit when I don't feel like shopping/cooking or have visitors and have probably ate there once a month for four years. The food is fresh, simple and tasty. It's very similar to the meals I prepare for myself at home so it suits me. The staff are always accommodating of my children, the service has always been excellent. Anka, the waitress is lovely - she always remembers preferred dishes and nothing is too much trouble. I would happily recommend this neighbourhood bistro.

A group of 8 of us had lunch here and we all really enjoyed it. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive, but not overbearing. There is a set menu (2 courses £10, 3 courses £14), pasta menu and breakfast menu (until 6pm each day), along with daily specials. Nothing is particularly expensive and we all enjoyed our food. The restaurant serves a mixture of dishes - somewhere sort of between British and French food. Portions are on the big side. The staff were great with my friends' 18 month old - they even gave him a homemade chocolate biscuit (as well as lots of cuddles)! Would recommend if you are in Islington/Stoke Newington - plenty of resident parking nearby which is free outside of controlled hours.

The title of my review is an unsolicited comment from one of our party. Interestingly, had I read the Tripadvisor reviews before going in, I probably would have moved on to somewhere else. The ambience was excellent, it was busy but not noisy. Service was just right, attentive without being overwhelming. The menu was great value, £9.95 for two courses, £13.95 for three. Two of us had the lime chicken starter which was excellent, very moist. I had the pork main course, the others had salmon, all very pleasant with first class presentation. Being a fat pig, I had no alternative but to finish with the apple crumble and custard, delicious :) The others were too full for pudding. This was a great find for us, we're not local so will not be regular guests but will definitely visit again in the future. Thank you!

Have eaten Brunch here a few times since I moved into the neighbourhood. Quite a cute little restaurant with friendly staff and very reasonable prices for the portion size. We've tried the porridge, french toast, Omelettes and scrambled eggs. All nicely presented and tasty however recently the french toast was a little dry. One pet peeve; I would recommend that owner covers the cakes/cupcakes that are displayed on the main window in order to protect them from flies and germs in general as customers can sit within hand-reach of these tasty treats when sitting on the podium.

Twenty-one of us visited Fifty-Six for a friend's 60th birthday. Our party were in the small room at the back of the restaurant which was ideal. The food was delicious, the birthday cake lovely and the staff were very friendly and efficient. The food is very reasonably priced at Fifty-Six so the bill wasn't as eye-watering as it would have been in many other places in Stoke Newington. Some of our party are regulars at Fifty-Six and I look forward to going with them again very soon.

I started going this restaurant in 2008 when I first moved to London and it was excellent. I live around the corner so is convenient especially for when my parents come to stay with me. I used to go at least once a month. That was until just over a year ago when it was awful and all because of the service. This happened a few times and vowed to never go back again. I clearly was not the only one as it just seemed to wither into a sad empty place. Having said all this I walked past with a friend, hungry and impatient in late August. To my surprise it was busy again so I took a risk. I decided I'd just get a starter of baked salmon and bottle of bubbly. What a difference, they have a new waitress who understands and excels at what is a very difficult job. (you never notice when done well but so obvious when it is bad). The food was excellent. I found out the reason the previous owner is back. I have been back several times since and it is back to being consistently, charming, rustic restaurant with a warm and friendly atmosphere. All I can say to the owner is keep up the good work and make sure you keep that waitress. The set menu is just under £10 for 2 courses and £13 for 3 courses. This is amazing value for money for well above average food. I am so glad I tried them again and that they have got themselves back to where they were before.

I have eaten here many times so it cannot be so bad. However, it is also very local and if you can lower your expectations enough then occasionally its possible to be pleasantly surprised. The service, however, is genuine and friendly. The menus are confused and the cooking nothing special with a bit too much reliance on the pre-prepared.Having said that, groups always seem to have fun, the food is edible and you can get a two course meal for a tenner.

How I wish I had logged on and read the reviews before booking. I booked this restaurant because it was close to where my mother lives and we wanted a small celebration for her birthday. Perhaps the fact that when we arrived the place was empty was another clue we should have noted. We booked it because their website looked good and the A La Carte menu would have suited all members of our group. When we arrived we were given a set menu sheet and told there was no A La Carte menu available it was just the set menu and a few addition dishes on the blackboard. I won't list all the dishes and what we found poor about them just the highlights. The Prawn and Mango salad turned out to be a small pile of very small frozen prawns with no taste with a scoop of gluey marie rose sauce resting on top. The steak was very tough and chewy. The fries were those "Macdonald" style thin fries which were cold and no taste. The only plus point was the nice east european waitress who met every request with a nice smile and a "You're welcome" I'm in my fifties now and have eaten in many hotels and restaurants and never felt the need to write a reveiw I've always taken the rough with the smooth and put it down to experience. If however reading my review stop at least one person booking then it will be time well spent. I wish it had stopped me booking and wasting £140

Having tried this when it first opened, and not liked it then, we gave it another go as it seems to have gained a good reputation locally.Sadly, it was just as bad as we had remembered. Their menu claims that they have a passion for cooking the best ingredients in a brilliant way (or something similar), but it was so uninspired and uninspiring! More like a restaurant which is at a level slightly above a greasy spoon - but I prefer the food and prices in a good greasy spoon.

We were so disappointed! We used to use this restaurant a lot, when it was run by the owners, Karen and Milan. In those days, I couldn't fault it: good food, great value, nice atmosphere and superb service. We stopped going because everything went downhill in the absence of the owners. However, that was three to four years ago, so we thought we'd give it another try. We waited ages for our order to be taken, then an HOUR for starters. Prices for these ranged from £5.95 to £8.50 and were NOT value for money. They were so small! We then waited another hour for mains. It came up in dribs and drabs, so by the time the veg arrived, we were already halfway through the meat etc. Out of six mains ordered, two were good, one fair, and the other three inedible. Throughout all this we received no apology, explanation or compensation. It was only when I asked for the bill that the manager mumbled an apology. To sum up - don't go there! There are so many good restaurants in Stoke Newington, you don't need to.
