Farmyard Restaurant in Norwich

Expensive food. No atmosphere. & £25 mark up on bottles of wine. Shocking! As much as it was pleasant to eat here, it was over priced for what you got. Veg/chips/salads all extras nothing as standard. Menu hasn’t changed in 5 years, same as when we previously went. no atmosphere just loud talking, no music no character. Wouldn’t recommend & wouldn’t go again unfortunately especially when they’re cheeky enough to add on £25 pure profit on a £15 bottle of wine given the current climate. Poor show Farm Yard

Food very nice, staff and service very good.

Everything was excellent. It was entirely worth the trip and the price. I had two starters and a bit of baron bigod for dessert.

I can't remember when I last had a meal so good. Relaxed quality. Highly recommend. Unfortunately, we live in New Zealand, so will be a long time before we get to experience again, but will be top of the list if things to do when we are next in the UK, not just next time we are in Norwich.

Great lunch, one of the best pieces of chicken I've ever tasted.

We were impressed. We enjoyed the food. It was obvious the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. We ordered from the set menu, 3 courses for £30pp. I had the ham hock terrine and my wife the French onion soup to start, we both enjoyed these. We had the duck for main, which was cooked perfectly, it fell apart in the mouth. We also shared some chips, they were very good. For dessert we had the dark chocolate and amaretto delice, this was amazing. The service was excellent and the atmosphere quiet and calm. Food is expensive here, but portion sizes are good and food quality is to a good standard. We would recommend.

To be honest this is a very overrated venue. Low end service, no product expertise. The food was poor for what it was trying to portray. If you charge the price or hint Michelin, then walk the walk,if not, stick to the pub grub that you really are ! Went to the 'cottage ', Thorpe St Andrew, on Sunday, fed three more adults and three children with double drinks for £30 more. Value for money, service, and food expertise I'll go to the cottage. I'm still looking for a top end restaurant in Norwich, watch this space X

Lovely atmosphere and service. The food was well below expectations, everything was overly salty. Some of the dishes were confused, like the prawn doughnut. This was my second visit in 6 years, not much has changed and will not be going again unfortunately.

Great food, tasty and well presented

One of Norwich's finest. Fantastic food, great atmosphere. Pricier than your standard restaurant but you get what you pay for and the lunchtime deal offers excellent value if you're on a budget. It's one of our go-to restaurants special occasions.

I purchased a restaurant voucher as a Christmas present. The voucher was supposed to be sent as an email on Christmas Day. The email had still not been received. Incredibly poor from the restaurant.

This is the best restaurant in Norwich by far. We had such excellent food from starter to dessert and the service was outstanding. We think it was excellent value for money too!

At6:30pm the Restuarant was busy and they forgot to lay the table properly - no water glasses. The starters were bland and could have done with more seasoning. The Beef Wellington was great….when it arrived. Due to the wait they offered us snack but it did not come until the BW arrived. The sprouts were under cooked and hard. It will be another year before we try this restaurant again!

Took my husband here for a birthday meal. The food was very well presented and tasted amazing, we were very impressed. All the waiting staff were extremely friendly and helpful, making it a lovely relaxing evening. If you’re ever in Norwich give this restaurant a try, you won’t regret it.

A friend and I went to Farmyard for a mid-week catch up. I’d been before but my friend hadn’t. My first experience had been highly positive and I was hopeful of having an equally delicious meal. The service was superb; friendly attentive, good-humoured, and I can’t praise our waitress enough. However the food was decidedly average. We ate from the Christmas menu which presented as better value (certainly more reasonable than the Wellingtons that appeared on the specials). We both opted for the turkey and shared a side of the potato dish. The potato terrine was very tasty but the turkey was dry and flavourless. It arrived with stuffing, part of an onion and fondant celeriac (or similar). Disappointingly, the celeriac was hard in places and took some chewing. There was a sauce, but nowhere near enough if it, particularly as the meat was dry and might have benefited from a soak. For desert we opted for a profiterole (I thought it was plural on the menu but only one, large profiterole arrived) and the famed chocolate bar. The chocolate bar was rich and sumptuous but far too sweet to be finished by the average diner. The profiterole was filled with a hazelnut crème pat but the texture was oddly thick and dense and somewhat off putting. The chocolate topping was so solid it reminded me of Ice Magic from my youth. Having said this, I ate the entire meal and enjoyed the evening. The company was good, the ambience suited a catch up between friends and, as previously mentioned, the waitress was lovely. However at nearly £85 for two (including two large glasses of red wine), it didn’t feel like good value. I’ll happily pay that amount for exceptional food but I left feeling like we could have eaten better, for less money a few doors away.

Rear reader, I wrote this in May 2019 and thought I would copy and paste my review from then because it's still valid and perhaps even better than back then! "After a blissful, relaxed evening of haute cuisine we wondered why we'd never been here before since arriving in Norwich two years ago. Very friendly staff, cool decor, warm vibe ... reminded us of positive LA experiences. As a world travelled authentic foodie I have to give Farmyard the highest praise. The food is superb. To begin we shared a delicious tempura cauliflower 'bite' covered in nam-jin sauce (lime, lemon grass, coriander and chilli) while sipping excellent mojito and negroni (with Antica vermouth!) house made cocktails. Our starters were fresh sardines with caviar and crab with pea mousse. Entrees were wild Cornish sole (fish of the day) and sea bream perfectly cooked and accompanied by a special orange butter sauce. The wine selection was great. My partner had a glass of Viognier while I had a Picpoul and an incredible Romanian pinot. We shared the deconstructed Snickers bar, a mix of chocolate, caramelized peanuts and white milk sorbet for dessert. Heavenly. And washed this down with an amazing dark Jimenez dessert wine. Can't wait to go back!" Fast forward to this month. My old friend Ted and I (first time I had seen him in 46 years after he emigrated to Canada) both had the same dishes. To begin we had the super tasty fresh mussels from Brancaster, soft and juicy, with a sublime sauce that was NOT too salty! The main was chicken cooked sous vide so it was tender and tasty served with a ridiculously special beurre blanc sauce, And we ended with their signature perennial dessert as described in my first review. Wow! What an evening. The place was warm, full and buzzing and the service was so friendly and accommodating. Next time we'll be back sooner than 4 years!

Booked a table here for my wife's birthday. The food was simply stunning. I particularly enjoyed the Binham blue cheese souffle. First time here. Definitely won't be the last.

If you are looking for a Michelle Star experience at half the price then you won't be disappointed ding here.

Very exciting menu that you’d see on MasterChef. All dishes we tried were very tasty and different. My only criticism was the fact that the pork belly was dry, but the sauce tasted great nonetheless. The main dish, sea trout, was exceptional. Desserts were good and well-presented, too. Clearly the customers are mostly adults. The waitress wasn’t sure if they had a children’s menu at first, but they did, and even the sausage and chips were delicious! Service was good, wine was good. Well worth a visit if you are into contemporary British cooking.

We went to celebrate my 30th. The food was lovely, service attentive and simultaneously formal and casual. I had a wonderful time and the rest of the party did too.

Full - literally - as were we when we left! Very casual, friendly atmosphere. I had a prawn dumpling in a creamy soup with broad beans and herbs, which was both filling and also delicious especially the "soup". Then we both fancied some red meat for a change and had rump with chips. Very generous portions of steak beautifully arranged, not just a slab. But it was a mistake both to have chips: one chips and a green veg next time. My husband had a banoffee pudding as it had porcini ice cream with it ( which he loved) but I was defeated so had just coffee with petit fours. A lovely evening and within easy walking distance of the house we're hoping to buy. Couldn't be better.

Great food and service. Definitely a good find and would recommend this restaurant. Probably will order some of their frozen range as I don’t live close by.

I think perhaps I expected too much from my visit. I had the crab starter, tasty but small. Then we shared a cote de beuf. I was surprised neither the waiter nor the kitchen staff knew what breed the steak was. It was cooked to perfection with a great crust but rather grizzly and a bit tough. Can't blame the restaurant for this, but I do think serving balsamic glazed shallots on tops is a mistake as it overly influences the flavour of the meat. The wine was an average tasting malbec, and I have had much better at a similar price point. One further observation, the steak knives were possibly the worst I have ever used. I might have been better off with a butter knife. I'm glad I checked it off my list of places to visit.

We were a group of 10 who visited recently, so had the group fixed menu. The food and wine were absolutely fantastic, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Every dish that was brought out was a wonderful and delicious surprise. At the end of the meal we selected desserts which were just as delicious. And the restaurant itself is lovely, in soft, low light in the evening. The service was fantastic also.

A quiet lunchtime service on a Tuesday, but attentive enough to make the meal a pleasure. Food was good, with great local ingredients and good flavours. Amazing artwork on the wall by local and Scrawl Collective member, Will Barras too, which makes the establishment a visual delight too. Something many establishments cannot claim. A definite recommend, should you be in the vicinity.

We saw good reviews for this place and gave it a go. It was amazing - from the friendly greeting as we stepped in, to the excellent attentive service throughout. You actually feel like they want you there and are glad you came. The menu was simple but inviting - they have a set menu which includes a drink and can be for two or three course. They also have a-la-carte. The place is bright and airy - no dark nooks and musty smells - it's modern and fresh in appearance. Our starters, pre-meal snack, mains and desserts were a taste sensation. My wife and I had the comfit duck and it was excellent. I actually stuck my head into the kitchen and thanked the chef afterwards. My dessert of chocolate gateau is one of the tastiest I have ever had. Not ruined by fruit - it is just chocolate and flavour. They do include a service charge into the bill but I told them it was too little to reflect my enjoyment and so I added more on. We will return.

A little gem a little off the beaten track. We went for lunch a good interesting menu good service. The food was delightful and imaginative. They made a real effort for my mother in laws 93 birthday. Would highly recommend we will go back.

We do like Farmyard, but with all the choices now in the city realised we hadn’t been for nearly a year. It was just as good as always with a fantastic menu with tastes matching the incredible blending of flavours. There is still a decent wine list able to suit all pockets & palates. Service was as always slick and appropriately paced with the open kitchen still very interesting to watch. It was very busy and with the low ceiling quite noisy but it is good to see the restaurant ‘back to normal’. We’ll certainly be back, but sooner than before.

What a spectacular place. The food was faultless every dish absolutely perfect. The service was equally as fabulous. We left full and very happy. A perfect place to celebrate our anniversary.

The best restaurant in the city

Very good food, amazing mixture of flavours. My sirloin was outstanding, very flavorful and tasty. Fish dishes were fantastic. Dessert was beautiful (white chocolate with pecan and blackberry cheesecake) The downside: the coffee and the cappuccino were poor quality. Either change the coffee beans or stop serving coffee. Nevertheless, we highly recommend this restaurant.

Hands down best food I've eaten in Norwich. Fantastic creativity in the cooking and the atmosphere was phenomenal. I had the lamb sweetbreads which was tasty and the curry granola was a exciting new thing to try. The salt cod croquettes where a delicious surprise which everyone should try. The service was good and I would say that the price was a pleasant surprise at the end of the meal. Can't wait to come again with a new menu.

Where do I start? Open kitchen, with 3 very talented and dedicated chefs, the freshest seasonal ingredients I have seen in a too long time, a great choice of wines, and the prices are more than fair. The food, the ideas, the combinations, are exquisite. Who would have thought making a miso caramel? And it works. Everything I tried not only worked, but I couldn't stop being amazed by the tastes: snacks, starters, main, desserts. Bravo!

Consistently very good food and service; highly recommended. There is an interesting and varied wine selection. Service is friendly and unobtrusive. The open kitchen is a nice touch, so you can see the food being cooked and arriving at the pass. I particularly recommend the cote de boeuf which is cooked over charcoal and is delicious; dare I say tastier than the equivalent served at The Gunton Arms!
