Express Cafe in Powys

Lovely atmosphere, great staff & service. Sausage, egg and chips was excellent and when I fancied a “chip butty” the owner happily brought me a slice of bread and butter! Would recommend this cafe to everyone

Everything is good about this place. You can eat inside or out. The staff have always been friendly and wear PPE. The cafe is very clean. Service is speedy but you don’t feel hurried. A nice relaxing time. Food is good honest food and cooked well. A lot of choice on the menu.

I have been a few times now and as always excellent food, lovely helpful staff and a great atmosphere. Love the new decor and the local pictures. As an elderly lady I am very fussy about COVID requirements and will walk out if I am not 100% happy. Express cafe meets all measures perfectly. Thanks Andy and team.

I visited the other day whilst in the area for the weekend and we stumbled across the cafe. It was busy outside and looked inviting. Our food was delicious and fabulous service from the staff, all very helpful. And such amazing value for money. I was also very happy to see that Covid measures were being taken seriously and the tables were well distanced and all of the staff wee wearing visors. If we are in the area again we will definitely be back. Thank you

I have visited this cafe many times and always had great food and service, the usual staff weren't there so I wondered if there is new owners ,but I went in anyway for lunch . I wish I hadn't !! Firstly half way through taking my order the young waitress walked off , I called her back and told her I hadn't finished giving her my order she replied with "oh what do you want" 5 mins later she returns to ask us our order again? While we were waiting one of the staff dropped a can of coke on the floor , one of the other waitresses laughed and kicked it across the floor then the lad picked it up and put it in the take away order bag, not very hygienic at these present times !! We ordered 3 soups but only two arrived , I asked for Brown bread but got white , I told the waitress we wanted Brown , she then disappeared and came back with brown bread for ONE of the soups, the soup looked awful , it was leek and potato soup, there was so much flour in it that it was a gloopy consistency with absolutely no flavour on it !!! worse soup i have ever had !! None of us ate it unfortunately, we were going to have coffee and cake but paid and left abruptly , prob won't go there again unfortunately, shame as it use to be fantastic!! With nine members of staff present , these issues should not of happened!! I don t like giving bad reviews but on this occasion I felt it appropriate as our meal was a complete waste of money.

Always been excellent food. The takeaway service is brilliant. The lockdown had certainly bought the best out of this cafe.

Passing through Newtown again and decided to pop in on a whim. The cafe has been refurbished beautifully. It was very busy, but with excellent social distancing and I felt really safe. They seem to have a lot more outdoor space now, much of it covered and I love the addition of the little olive trees. I decided to try one of the new specials - the breakfast muffin. Wow! It was absolutely delicious. Well done Express Cafe - you just keep getting better and better :)

Great social distancing, great staff protected, friendly and helpful. It’s an honest cafe with a decent honest menu and not over priced. Inside and outside tables. Excellent!!

Not our first visit, But as always made to feel welcome, Service with a smile and always large portions, could not fault any part of our visit.

In these difficult times had home delivery brill service and lovely food. When phoned gent was helpfull and very polite. Hope the supermarkets think how they can helpand help them to support the community in newtown .

I am a regular at the Express Cafe, there are reasons for this, the always warm welcome from very friendly and efficient staff that actually know my name and use it!! These little things make a difference in my opinion! The food is freshly cooked to order and everything always tastes fresh and hot! Andy has recently launched a new menu with some tasty additions, most of which I have tasted already. The portions are always large and the prices are more than reasonable. The place is always spotlessly clean and tables are cleared quickly! The new Beef Stew is superb with large pieces of diced slow-cooked beef that melts in your mouth in a rich gravy! The coffee is freshly made to order and excellent quality, piping hot and strong! On your departure, you always get a friendly thank you and cheerio!

Was staying near Newtown for a family Christmas and wanted some lunch on Christmas Eve. Express cafe looked busy which is always a sign of good food. Sausage, egg and chips was excellent and very reasonably priced and the staff were lovely giving first rate service. The icing on the cake was that a disabled member of the party found the facilities and ease of access first rate.

Called in here had all day breakfast.my wife had burger,both were really nice,cooked by a young man,and were we surprised,wonderful no grease,unbelievable,he is an asset to the business,well done

Called there with family 5 adults and aBaby 6 meals brilliant good portions and hot did not wait long Baby was unwell had a accident staff were brilliant sorting it all so in the mornings they do a deal Coffee and Cup Cake good value staff really help full very friendly

My gran and I went into town to have lunch, and although I have lived in town for a couple of years now I still don’t really know of anywhere in town to go for lunch.We wondered about and decided to try the Express Cafe, as it looked busy and always seems to be so hoped this would be a good indicator of quality.There were no seats inside so we sat outside (still under cover). We ordered a baguette, a tuna jacket potato and two drinks and it came to only £9 something. Great value. My baguette was lovely and just enough, my gran said the jacket was delicious, just a little too big for her. As we were sat down we saw someone have the Lasagne and that looked tasty. I’d recommend having a look at the homemade dishes first as we ordered them noticed the Lasagne and Cottage Pie, and did think we’d have liked to have had them.Also thought it was really nice that dogs were allowed to sit at the outside spots as there’s not many places you can sit round here with dogs allowed now.Lovey little cafe and we will be sure to return.

We’ve been holidaying near Newtown for a couple of weeks and have visited this gem of a cafe 3 times now. 1st time I arrived with my dog and sat outside as I had our dog. Though no table service the waitress saw me and came out and took my order. Big thumbs up. On the 2 other occasions we visited as a family and the food was both excellent and really good value for money. Also, what a fab menu. Hoping to visit again before we go home. Well done Express Cafe.

I have been quite a few times since the new owner Andy has taken over. I take my coffee black and the Americano here is first class, strong with a punchy taste and very hot, just as it should be!!! I have tried the big breakfast which was excellent, filling and very well cooked with nice thick rashers of bacon!! The ham and cheese omelette filled half the plate and was packed with ham and cheese, the rest of the plate was full of freshly cooked chips, excellent!! You must also try the half-pound burger with bacon and cheese. Two succulent burgers, cheese, bacon, salad and relish again the plate was piled high with freshly cooked chips, totally amazing!!! There is always a warm welcome from not only the owner and staff but the other customers are very friendly as well!!!

This was my first visit since the new owners. Cafe seemed very busy on the day that I visited.

I pop in here from time to time whenever I'm in Newtown. They have a huge range of all day breakfasts and the portions are enormous. The staff are really friendly and there seem to be a lot of regulars. It's always busy.

My family have been eating at the Express Cafe for many years. The staff have felt like family and we are always made to feel welcome. The food has always been quick, tasty and very good value. I was quite shocked to find that the cafe has been sold to a new owner. I needn't have worried, food is still good. Don't change anything Andy!

My family moved to the area & I was down visiting them, went into Newtown to have a look around, spotted Express cafe. I had a cooked breakfast it was huge, well cooked & presented, nice latte my sister had a panini. Really nice place will definitely go back next time I visit & my sister will be a regular now I’m sure

Visited here whilst seeing family locally and chanced across this cafe. Had a Mediterranean feel on the outside and had amazing friendly service. The food was tasty and hot and a varied menu. A must next time I am in the area

We were just passing through Newtown and happened to walk past this place, in the middle of a little shopping centre (Bear Lane). It was very busy (always a good sign) but we managed to get a table. The place was really clean and tidy and the food was great. I had one of the many all-day breakfasts on offer, which was excellent, and my friend had a panini, which came with a huge portion of chips and a salad. The service was really quick and friendly and there is a lovely vibe about the place. It was such good value that we will definitely be coming back again when we're in the area. Highly recommend.

Nothing fancy, a greasy spoon really, but the portions are huge and good value. The early riser breakfast must have had at least 3 eggs in the portion of scrambled eggs. The meal was lovely and hot. Others in the group had scampi and chips (proper prawns not reformed as was mentioned in a previous review) and veggie burger and chips (unfortunately with a huge dollop of mayonnaise rather than a chutney). Quick, polite service. Good place to fill up before going for a long walk along the river. Confusingly has two hygiene ratings (4 and 5 star) on the window.

Service was fantastic. Really polite and checking everything was ok. The gentleman serving and the lady who bought our food, great customer service.

Decided to review Express cafe, rather than just places I eat on holiday.

I really cannot believe they would slice their breakfast sausage a quarter of an inch thick. Obviously you get far less on a sandwich. At their high prices it's a wonder they're still trading. In over 40 years of cafes, I've never seen the like!!

Popped in here in July 2017 and was totally impressed with the food, portion size and service. We have now had meals here over 10 times my husband and I having different things off the menu and every time the standard has been fantastic. The staff are so friendly and happy, makes a lovely change to see happy smiling faces even on a Monday morning when we’ve been in. We have now visited and sat outside and had a meal with our little yorkie dog and she was made just as welcome...

Popped in here while having a break driving from North to South Wales. Only had a ham salad sandwich and a cuppa but the sandwich was packed full and at a great price. As I was sitting at my table I couldn't help noticing the food going to the other tables - huge portions and gorgeous golden chips. Will definitely pop in again when passing.

We went to Cafe Express for lunch for the first time yesterday. I had cottage pie, roast spuds & veg and my boyfriend had liver, onions, bacon & chips.

Called in for a drink with my son. It took ages to get done. Only asked for two milkshakes. Was even more shocked when my drunk arrived in a plastic cup and my sons in glass. However the staff are friendly.

Pedimos gambas, patatas fritas y ensalada, solla, patatas fritas y guisantes. Ante todo, comprobó si la cigalas era genuino y no reformado. La camarera me aseguró que era verdadero. Me explico mis motivos para preguntar y registró con su doble, pero ella insistió en que era todo el scampi. Sin embargo, cuando llegó, estaba claramente reformadas. Pedí ver la bolsa que contenía los scampi, que no sólo indica reformado, pero también tenía un componente vegetal agregado. No podía comer y pidió un reembolso. Tuve apenas ha tocado la comida. Mientras tanto, mi amigo no podía comer su comida y a la izquierda la cafetería en disgusto. Sin embargo, sólo me estaba pidiendo un reembolso para mi comida. Al final, conseguir así frustrado con explicando por qué me requiere un reembolso, considerando que no era lo que habíamos pedido y esta vez era tratar con otra (más personal o miembro senior del chef), pero llegando a ninguna parte. En el mejor de los que era un malentendido, porque el inglés no era su lengua primera, en peor, completa para conseguir el deceitfulness personalizados. Me indicó que me iba a tomar más contacto con las normas y de comercio, y de informes de mi experiencia en Tripadvisor, esperando que iban a ver el sentido, pero no fue así. Me marché enojado, molesto y con hambre. Ni siquiera me ofrecieron una alternativa. Te sugiero que sólo uso este café si quieres comida de baja calidad y preparado para ser servido algo que no pedimos u orden.

No importa cómo su menú, los clientes sabroso no volveremos si tienen malas experiencias con su servicio al cliente. Pero confía en mí con un personal muy agradable y servicial con smalling. Camarera Ewelina pregunte a los clientes acerca de su día, ayudarles opciones de comida y dar a los clientes cumplidos. Ella siempre está sonriendo.

Pedimos un desayuno durante todo el día, una chaqueta de patata y 2 niños. Todos los precios son buenos. Ninguno de terminado toda nuestra comida. No está mal, no es una estrella Michelín, pero mi Dios, es bloody buena relación calidad-precio.

Popped in for a quick lunchtime snack. Food was quickly delivered. Really fresh and tasty. Portion Size's were great. For the price we were impressed. I would fully recommend the cafe for a bite to eat and great coffee.

Plenty of room outside within the covered walkway. The inside tends to get busy. Food can only be described as cheap and cheerful. No Michelin stars I'm afraid.

went here today for a quick cuppa, place relatively quiet, even at 10.30am which I thought strange as most other cafe's are busy.l ordered a hot chocolate and a standard Americano coffee. Once bought and paid for, it was after i recieved them at table i noticed that they were LARGE drinks and were charged accordingly. At no point did i ask for large, in fact I asked for standard.l suggest that if you visit in future, make sure that you specify the size of the drink or meal otherwise you will be secretively charged the higher amount.Not happy to say the best. I felt that I was treated dishonestly.

Used regularly because its very welcoming, the food excellent and freshly cooked, portions more than ample. Can be busy at peak times, but deservedly so. A lot of other cafe owners should visit here and see an example of a first class cafe, and hopefully learn from it. In need of a good breakfast? Try the number 5 on the menu. Obviously a local hub. The combination of positives engender brand loyalty. Long may it continue.

Called in on our way home from holiday for lunch, and what a great lunch it was, the food was nice and hot, very nice and the portions what a size. The staff are also very nice and quick service, Highly recommend this Café if you are hungry.

Travelling from our holiday in south Wales up to North Wales we (my husband and myself and 3 kids) stopped off for food and a stretch of our legs, thank heavens we stopped here to eat! Great menu and prices and most of all customer service. A big thank-you to all the staff.

Really fantastic fresh cooked food in gigantic portions, super friendly staff who always aim to please, large menu choice, will accommodate any appetite or request, inside and outside eating so having a dog no problem. Large mugs of fantastic tea,coffee,chocolate etc. All undercover outside so weather not a problem either. Always busy but tables are cleared straight away and very clean. Also a toilet available.(bonus !!) Also a super range of delicious cakes. would highly recommend.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this little cafe but to my surprise our food was freshly made and quick! Staff were all very attentive and always happy to help! I now go here every Wednesday lunch time with my mum. And all of the staff members say thank you to you when you leave and and make you feel welcomed!

Come in quite a lot with family, coffee is lovely and so quick, brilliant portions of food. Everything is lovely.

My sister and I visit every Saturday morning, with my 4 year old granddaughter and sometimes other family. We can honestly say the food is wonderful but most especially the service. The owners and staff make you feel so special and we really look forward to seeing them all. If you are a visitor to the town be sure to look in you wont be disappointed. Many Thanks to you all!

Came across this cafe by chance when we broke our journey from south to north Wales and glad we did. Food was very good and piping hot. The big breakfast was enormous as was the jacket potato with chilli. Coffee was made on a proper machine, and both that and the tea came in lovely big mugs.Service was very quick and efficient, and the cafe itself was spotless with plates cleared quickly and tables wiped down after every customer.Would certainly visit again.

Stopped into this Cafe' just before leaving Newtown after our week at Kerry Farm, wish we had found it earlier !! The food was cooked freshly, served and presented First Class. The staff were all so polite and helpful. While there people who had stopped on holiday earlier in the year had returned to eat again, that says it all.

Always visit on our trips to West Wales. Staff always friendly and breakfasts always first class. Had a change on our latest visit and had a sandwich which was also enjoyable. What strikes me about the cafe it is always so busy which is recommendation enough.

This cafe is in the Bear Lane arcade in Newtown. Simple, well-presented food, with pleasant staff. Huge portions!Very good for tea or coffee at other times of the day.

I use this cafe on a regular basis one main reason besides the friendly staff is the 5 rating for cleanliness, it is always spotless and other cafes in Newtown and out could learn from them,tables are cleared and wiped as soon as vacated, the food is always good basic hot fresh and quick piled plates no skimpy portions here, plenty of outside tables lovely in the summer all be it in an arcade the middle roof section is open to the fresh air, if you want a quick tasty lunch in a friendly environment this is the place for you

I had lunch with a girlfriend at this cafe and it was perfect, just what it says on the tin. My friend had sausage egg and chips.. perfectly cooked albeit the chips were frozen ones, but for the price you cannot go wrong. I had a jacket potato with cheese and homemade coleslaw and it was delicious, the side salad that came with it filled half the plate and was very crisp and fresh. The whole meal including 2 cups of tea came in at under a tenner. The surroundings were clean and the service was great too and even though it was busy we did not have to wait long for our food. Im really impressed and will return.

Whenever we visit Newtown in mid wales we always make a point of visiting this lovely café, where the service is always spot on and the café is always busy with customers. The staff are always pleasant to chat to, very friendly, make a lovely cup of coffee and the choice for snacks and food is great value. Truly recommend this in a delightful precinct.
