We were visiting Ullapool for one night in our campervan, had a few drinks at the seaforth hotel and ordered a takeaway for collection on our way to the campsite. Absolutely first class, fresh, tasty, portion size etc.Chicken garlic and a chicken pathia, Nan bread, chips, mushroom rice, poppadums and dips. Top notch food!!!!!

I thought from the previous reviews the food would be a little underwhelming. However we were surprised at how different all the dishes were! They were all exactly as described in the menu (not always the case) and the rice and naans were cooked and flavoured perfectly. We were very content with the food and would happily come back here!

As a regular eater of Indian curries in east London (and an experienced curry cook myself), I can quite honest say that this is the best curry I've had the pleasure of wolfing down in a long long time. The lamb in the curry was tender and not dry, its dansak sauce was rich and had the right balance of pineapple sweetness. My partner's keema potato curry was a new culinary delight, with tender chunks of minced beef in a rich gravy alongside chunks of spuds. The naans were a little thick for my personal liking but were cooked well and seasoned properly with coconut, and garlic respectively. A little expensive but the portions are big enough for two and the quality of food and the expertise in cooking are really worth it. Just watch out for the midges who will eat you alive while you wait outside. Cash only.

Takeaway only at present which was lovely. Am always wary of ordering curry in tourist places as the restaurants often cater to the sense that tourists have bland tastes. However the Essence provides tasty, flavoursome and when appropriate spicy food.

After just arriving in Ullapool and both of us starving from a long drive and a missed lunch we decided to try Essence of India. It was quite good, interesting flavors, not like we are use to, but very good.We stopped in early, they had just opened, time was around 5:00. Place was empty, so no problem with finding a table and the service was fine.My partner and I are both vegetarian, and Ullapool offers limited non meat restaurants and the pizza place was closed until later that evening. We ordered 3 side dishes, the spelling of the dishes was very different from what we are use to, ordering Motor Ponair, Chana Masala, and Paneer Mahkani with Basmati rice. Each side dish was £4.95 and the rice was £2.95. Total meal for us was £18.The Motor Ponair had a yellow base sauce that was very fresh tasting, small pieces of cheese, had a light curry flavor and a bite to the dish. The Chana Masala had a red tomato base with the chickpeas and a light curry flavor but a bit hotter. The Paneer Makhani had a yellow base sauce, a coconut milk flavor, small pieces of Paneer, a light curry flavor and mild heat. The rice was fine. The flavors were fine for us, again not what we were expecting but interesting still. The regions of India all cook different, this meal was a treat.Service was fine.

This is the worst Indian restaurant I have ever tried in my life, if I could rate no stars I would! Firstly we entered and asked for a table for 2 however we were told that it would be a 30 minute wait, which is completely fine so we therefore decided to order takeout instead. We ordered 2 curry’s, chicken pakora, nan bread, fried rice and chips! We were told it would be a 30 minute wait for a take away order however we waited 1 hour and 10 minutes. Not only this but we paid £30 and received no naan bread. The curry’s were bland and greasy as was the rice, we received 3 bits of chicken pakora with the tiniest bit of chicken surrounded by lots of inedible greasy batter. The food was inedible and a waste of money I wouldn’t feed my dog this meal. The front of house of house was rude and unhelpful! Overall I would save your money and go else where!

Checked out the reviews and saw that the Essence of India did not serve alcohol but you could bring your own. Purchased a bottle of wine from the nearby Tesco then headed for the restaurant. We got there at about 1730hrs on a Saturday night in June 2019. Fairly uninspiring setting and it was fairly quiet with those eating in, but there were quite a few takeaways being dished out. Friendly enough staff. I ordered a Keenan chili pea chicken/lamb curry with pilaf rice and my wife had a chicken tikka masala with a nan bread to share. We came here hoping for a nice meal and couldn’t have been more disappointed. We endured an excessively long wait for our food but placated ourselves with hopes of what was to come! The waiter finally arrived with some barely warm plates, maybe a sign that food was soon to come? Not! By the time the food did arrive the plates were cold again and the food was very poor value! 12 quid for a runny madras sauce co gaining 8 extremely small morsels of lamb! We pointed out that this was unacceptable value and his response was a dismissive shrug! How disrespectful?! Walking out was the only option! Not a pleasant experience at all! Avoid at all costs!!

A great Indian restaurant in Ullapool. Who would have thought? It is however very true. After checking out the last few reviews on Trip Advisor, we decided to book up. 9 out of 10 were very good with one terrible, clearly someone had had a bad day! "Table for six at 9.00 pm please" I asked. "It will have to be 8.30 if that's ok as we are very busy". Well that sounded good. Knowing that the restaurant was unlicensed, we took some wine and couple of beers to keep us going (no corkage is charged). Soft drinks are available to purchase. The menu was excellent with lots of different Chef's Specials plus all your regular favourites. The service was excellent all the way through. There was also a nice atmosphere in the restaurant. When the food arrived it looked fab. Well presented and good size portions but not ridiculous. My Cham Cham chicken was delicious and I'd never heard of it/tasted it before in my life. Everyone enjoyed their meals and there was little left on our plates for the staff to clear away or take home in their doggy bags. All in all a really good experience.

Given the overall rather mixed Tripadvisor reviews of Essence of India, we entered with trepidation. We were thus surprised by the excellence of the dishes we chose: Lamb Passanda and Chicken Korai. One of us declared that the Passanda was the best they had ever had. The Korai was also fine. The amount of meat in both dishes was generous, and the flavors were rich. The nan bread was very good. And the service was friendly. Yes, as many have pointed out, there is no alcohol served, but there is a Tesco nearby, and the restaurant charges no corkage fee. So your meal will cost less than it would if you paid restaurant prices for alcohol. It is also worth noting that, despite this being a tourist town, there were many local folks present, which is a testament to the underlying excellence of this restaurant. Finally, in view of some comments that the place is expensive, we find that it is not more expensive than the other restaurants we have dined at in tourist-oriented Ullapool. We shall certainly return when next in Ullapool.

Had an enjoyable meal in this restaurant while in Ullapool. Food was good and service efficient and unlike other restaurants we had looked at, it was serving food before 6pm which was the main reason we chose it, however glad we did. It does not...

We ate here twice during a recent visit to Ullapool. The restaurant is clean and well presented, serving a wide range of Indian and other dishes. The restaurant was suprisingly quiet which was slightly worrying, however the meals were excellent and served promptly. The table service was efficient but not as friendly as it might have been.

If you're fond of Indian food you'll be very pleased with Essence of India. There is an extensive menu and the selections we had were very good. The decor is quite nice, and the service was excellent. While they do not have a license,we brought our own wine and enjoyed it with our dinner. It was one of the better meals we've had in Ullapool.

sorry, i hate doing bad reviews, and maybe we are biased as we come from Yorkshire, home of some of the best Curry restaurants ever... but just don't visit this place. Eat haggis, eat steak, eat chips, just don't decide on a curry whilst in Ullapool.

Myself and my partner turned up an hour before the restaurant was due to close and asked for a table. The restaurant was about half full but we were told that there weren't any tables available. We thought he was joking, and asked whether the free tables were booked; he said no, but there were not any tables free for us to eat. No apology, no explanations, just dead eyes and dismissive, one-word answers. The rudest, most miserable man we've ever come across. As we were really hungry and desperate, we asked if we could take food away we were thrust a menu in an offhand manner, with no words or eye contact. Even the mute waitress standing next to him looked embarrassed. My partner and I looked at each other and I think we both knew we'd rather go and get sandwiches for dinner from the supermarket than give any money to this utterly awful man. We left in disbelief at how we'd been treated. Utterly awful experience that left a sour taste in our mouths all evening. I suggest the man goes on a how-to-speak human-being course. Dire.

Dated restaurant, no license so make sure you take a bottle along with you. Reasonably friendly staff but the food wasn't overly exciting, maybe where I'm from there is a lot of competition so the standards are higher at home, no food heaters on table and the food served was not exactly piping hot so by time had got half way thru curry it was going cold too quickly. The baskets the popadoms served in where filthy. Naan bread was actually really really good. Basically it was like an eat in takeaway... more than a proper restaurant. Wasn't poorly afterwards and the food was reasonably tasty. I wouldn't say don't go there.. I would just not get your hopes up if you do.

We had a lovely take away from this restaurant. Very well priced and an excellent curry. Staff were friendly but please note it is cash only which was a surprise.

This was our second visit to the Essence of India and the difference to our first visit twelve months ago was that they had stopped serving alcohol which was disappointing to start. The other thing that hadn't changed was the staff...come on guys try and crack a smile or look happy in your work? The food was just about ok but each dish we ordered were very much the same..On a positive note the popadoms we're fresh and crispy and the toilets were clean..One other thing which may seem a bit trivial but was annoying... go and buy some new cd's cause listening to James Blunt on repeat all through our meal was a bit depressing......Let's hope it improves for next year....

We visited in July and as my wife is vegetarian, Indian food is always a good idea. We really enjoyed the food but they are not licensed which is a bit of a disappointment. It's not that I want to get drunk while having a meal but it's very unusual to have a dry restaurant in a tourist town like Ullapool. Food was good though.

OK. Slightly harsh headline BUT what I mean is that the place just felt awkward. The food was a mixed bag - we were a group of 5. Starters. A few of us ordered pakora (veg and chicken). It came with no Pakora sauce - never seen that before. When we asked for some, the waiter told us that they don't do pakora sauce. OK then. And then the head waiter (I presume) wandered over and told us to just use the sauces still on the table from our poppadums. Really? So not a great start. The main courses, well mine was great in all honesty. The Dopiaza did not hit the spot. Tandoori Mixed Grill kept its recipient happy. We asked for desert menu - it was that 70s and 80s laminated sheet with pictures of rock hard frozen oranges. They didn't seem surprised that we decided not to partake. If you know your desert menu is basically rubbish, why not walk the hundred yards to Tesco so you can offer your customers a few scoops of vanilla ice cream. So disappointing overall. But given the lack of choice in town, we might go again - albeit straight to the main course and then down to the ice cream shop.

We had been to this place before for a takeaway a couple of years ago. I do not know what has happened. We had looked forward to going again. The chicken madras was inedible with a strange overpowering taste of lime. The tandoori chicken tikka was dry and didn't taste fresh at all. We got onion bahjis instead of chips. The restaurant was very quiet for a Friday night, maybe that was a give away. What a shame!!!Still not accepting cards or selling alcohol.Right on the edge of a very busy campsite, they really should be cashing in, in the middle of August!

The food was really excellent - full of flavour and very tasty. Was touring with our caravan and noticed the Indian Restaurant at the entrance to the Caravan Park we were staying at so decided to have a carryout meal. It may not look any fancy from outside but the sit down restaurant looks nice inside, and the food was excellent. Well worth a try.

Was just about beside myself with hunger when I was still waiting for my dinner after an hour but when it came I was glad I had waited. The food was much better than I expected nan bread light and pillowy just as it should be, and my lamb chicken prawn and spinach curry delicately spiced and delicious.A word of warning when they say hot they mean hot, as one of our number discovered.4 Stars for food but 2 stars for service.
