A real gem of a place. Booked in advance and sat enjoying amazing food and drinks for over 3 hours. Great table service, lovely atmosphere. We'll be back for sure!

I wish they would try a little harder. Poorly shucked oysters, variable service, and not cheap. Miserable - in one word.

A long overdue first visit was a real delight. Delightful food, classy environment and wonderfully friendly service - will definitely be back soon. We are spoilt in Brighton with so many options, but testament to how long English's has been around that it's still packing them in! The team also made my dad's 90th a really special treat - thanks so much.

Was genuinely blown away by the quality of the food, which seems to get better every time I visit. We had the £40 set menu and every dish was thoughtfully put together and incredibly tasty. Together with attentive staff and a intimate but grand dining room and it really was the perfect evening. One of my favourite restaurants in Brighton.

I’m m gluten free so always struggle in new places. Opted for the fish platter and it was amazing- gluten free battered oysters arrived with the platter and was totally delicious! Amazing meal, great house wine and very attentive xx

Lovely restaurant, great food. The Brill sharing main was delicious. A couple of dishes didn't really work though - the gravadlax was more like tartar, you couldn't taste the curing herbs because it was chopped too fine and covered in a mustard mayo and way too many almonds. The oysters were drained. We forgot to pre-order sides for our sharing mains, no one bothered to ask - hence the reduction in a service star. That said, the waitress was great. Overall, good food, love the setting (apart from the wall murals - time to move on from white only, middle aged rich people as decoration?) The food made up for the shortcomings.

Visiting Brighton I decided to treat my friend to some oysters. We ordered from the blackboard in the window. We decided on 6 natives and 2 bloody Mary's, which we believed were going to be £6 each. It transpired that I had misread it and the advertised drinks were just shots. However the bar tender didn't ask me if I wanted shots or full cocktails. We sat at the bar but were then requested to move further down the bar to stools in front of the coat rack. Of course the inevitable happened and the waitress asked us to stand up so she could get some coats from the rack. When the bill arrived it was over £60, including a service charge of over £8. We sat at the bar so service was minimal. When I asked for a refund on the service charge I was only given back £6 because apparently the rest had suddenly become VAT. The waitress, whose only interaction with us had been to ask us to stand, made her displeasure obvious by banging a tray down on the counter. I can only presume that the staff aren't very well paid and have to rely on the service charge. In conclusion, make sure you read the menu carefully and beware of extra charges. There are a lot of better seafood restaurants in Brighton that offer much better value.

First visit to English’s normally go to riddles and finn but was fully booked and English’s were doing a deal for first time visitors a free bottle of wine. We booked for a Saturday night at 7pm we were greeted by very friendly staff and shown to our table upstairs by the window. The staff were young but amazing customer service. The food was delicious and reasonably priced for a treat night. My only view was the restaurant was lacking ambience but as I appreciate some people would prefer the low key quite quiet restaurant. So not a negative but just not our cup of tea but once again food and staff 10/10

went down and had fish and chips and a couple of oysters each - 2 natives from S. Ireland and two rock from Jersey island - delicious bread roll and homemade smoked mackerel pate and a couple of glasses of excellent wine - All was fantastic and could not of asked for better - freshly prepared and cooked food at its best - thank you

We had the winter dinner set menu and unfortunately wasn’t enjoyable, for starters we had the salmon tartare, and the fried basket, both were awful, the tartare had the worst taste ever and the combination of ingredients was just not good, the fried basket was even worst, super oily and it was all butter, wouldn’t recommend, with non- existent pieces of seafood. For mains we decided to go for the dry beef rump as we thought that they couldn’t go wrong with the steak, however was more than average. For the dessert we had the sticky toffe which we could only had a few spoons of because it was way too sweet and heavy, and the pistachio tart, that again, was very average. The service was okay and our waitress was lovely, however the atmosphere was very boring, I like quite and chill places too but this place was way too boring for me, you could barely hear any music in the background and it was hard to have a conversation as you could hear everyone’s conversations. I also made a note on the booking saying that we were celebrating a gender reveal and was expecting something for dessert, just as an advice these notes are really important and sometimes just writing on the dessert congratulations makes a huge difference for any occasion. The place looks nice, but I wouldn’t go back to dine unfortunately

Visited Brighton for the first time and had a fantastic experience at English's! Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented. My servers were very friendly and attentive

What an amazing experience! Everything was absolutely perfect! The ambience, the service from the wonderful Ella and of course the food. The food was divine. We got the hot sharing platter with loads of seafood and fish. As it was Friday, they had a special offer of 15% discount for the platter. They also ensured that all of our dietary requirements were met. Definitely one of the best and memorable dining experiences we had.

Really enjoyed the food, pricey, but a great evening.

My favourite restaurant in Brighton

English's of Brighton is an iconic seafood restaurant and oyster bar. The food was delicious. I had the fish pie which was divine, beautifully presented, full of fish and flavour. Our group also thoroughly enjoyed the seabass and classic fish and chips. A must go destination for seafood and champagne.

Fantastic food, caring service and great desserts. You can never go wrong with this place. My partner and I go there every time we’re in Brighton. Highly recommend the scallops and the Pannacotta. We always try to get a table with the waitress that speaks a little bit of French as she is the loveliest.

My favourite place in the UK to visit for beautifully cooked fish. Worth a trip down to Brighton just for the experience. Somehow the chef manages to grill the Dover sole and plaice better than anywhere else. Both were absolutely wonderful. As were the enormous scallops. The side dishes are also very good. The staff are warm and friendly and make you feel welcome. We were served by a charming waitress. In my opinion the puddings are not up to the standard of the fish: one had too much balsamic vinegar splashed over it. Nevertheless, I still give it 5 stars and eagerly look forward to my next visit.

Fish at its best. Everything is delicious, the quality and taste of each ingredient is improved with few but balanced and perfectly chosen spices.

The fish was cooked well and was very tasty. The accompanying sauces and dips I found very heavy, salty and overpowering. The olives were terrible, don't bother with these. Overall a good meal as the fish and seafood were fresh, good quality, well cooked and well presented.

This establishment is a hidden gem amongst the sea of sub par restaurants in Brighton! An old school experience with a modern day twist and style, we came here to celebrate my best friends 30th, the oysters served were some of the best I’ve had in the UK, so sweet and fresh! We had half a dozen each with a bottle of chilled Rafferty sparkling English wine and the mixed appetisers. Many thanks again to Jonathan, for his recommendations and lovely presence on the restaurant floor, English’s have just the right balance of classy but not stuffy, casual with an air of formality should the need arise. The Panacotta was out of this world and the portion was huge, we shared and struggled! Thank you again team, we cannot wait to come back

I had one of the best dinners here. The food was great and delicious, they have a lot of different options 🤤 The service was 11/10. Very good! You can feel the level of the restaurant! Also, a special thank you to the waiter who let me take the blanket for a night as I was feeling a bit ill and obviously cold. I did return the blanket back! 😅 Thanks a lot for your care and great experience at this place ❤️

We went to dine there and they luckily had a table for us for 90 minutes as they were busy but that didn’t hinder the service nor the quality of food. This is the second time I go there and the food was so delicious. On the service part, I would like to thank Laura who was very attentive and greeted us with such an infectious smile. What an exceptional service! We will be back and recommend to friends 🙏🏼

Went there last night first time food was good the wine was shocking. The white burgundy was to cold and tanic and the red awful a glass of each came £23 .I would say looking at the wine menu it's most low end supermarket wine you buy from a trip to France. The service wasn't great the staff weren't professional tables left dirty and forgetting basic service like wine with the meal on time. Saturday night I thought quite quiet.

The English's is an institution for fine food & wine. If you like your oysters, this place is a must. It's always a real treat to eat there- the service, the menu & atmosphere are superb. Locally sourced ingredients, the best place for seafood lovers. Each dish is delivered to perfection. Their steaks are perfect, melt in the mouth. Considering the quality of the food, it is real value for money and unlike many other restaurants in the Lanes, it never disappoints. Always a treat for your tastebuds, from start to finish. The staff are charming and professional- one of my favourite restaurants in Brighton.

The service was horrible with bad attitude. We ordered the lobster dish with skinny fries, the fries was cold and come late than other table after we asked for the bills and they let us wait for long but in the same time they were not busy at all. Won't recommend and definitely not go back again.

I recently dined at English’s of Brighton, located in the heart of the town center. While they don't offer on-site parking, there are convenient car parks nearby. This is the place to come if you want a bit of sea food. Service was second to none. Probably a bit Iover the top for me but some people like that. Had the mussels. Can't explain how good they were. Defo back here when in town.

The food was immaculate🤩 The lobster is absolutely delicious! The staff wonderfully kind and the decorations/ theme is beautiful! The only minor issue is that the toilets (female) are like 4 floors! Other than that, it’s a lovely place

We ordered six 2 course meal and to begin with the starters are alright, the oysters tasted good and the fried calamari are crispy. However for the mains we ordered 3 mussels dishes (two cream with white wine sauce and one without cream) and to our surprise all the mussels are TINY and very sandy inside. I almost broke my teeth chewing them and I have to spit a lot of them out since it is inedible. Definitely the worst experience I’ve had with a mussel dish. The best main is the steak which is tender and juicy. To conclude I am very disappointed with the quality of the mussels but apart from that all the other dishes tasted alright.

Definitely worth a visit! We’re amazed by the panna cotta and the tuna steak. Oysters are also nice and fresh.

We were greeted by a very polite man who actually spoke to us like human beings it was quite unusual in Brighton. We were then seated in a mirrored room by a very polite man then handed over to a nice lady. We went for the fixed summer menu and had calamari to start with then I had steak and my partner had moules. The food was exceptional and the service was great too. We also had a dessert. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting or living (like ourselves) in Brighton.

Always a pleasure to eat here, we live in Brighton and it’s a guaranteed nice experience. If we have guests we always bring them here. The new dark chocolate desert is amazing!!

This was the best lunch I have had in years. The food was delicious - fresh oysters and perfectly cooked tuna steak. The wine recommendations were spot on. An absolute pleasure to experience and I look forward to going back. We had the set menu and for the price this was absolutely outstanding value. I have paid twice as much for food half as good.

The exterior looked very pretty! My sister came to visit me in Brighton, she loves a good champagne! So of course I thought let's go to that cute little place in the Lanes. We walked up to the door and asked for a table, we wanted to have a drink but of course we would have ordered food as well after a few champagnes, that's what we do! We were told by a very rude elderly man "this is not a bar, it's a restaurant, there's a pub over the road" his tone was so so rude! 😆 he look at us like we were a pair of ... Just a piece of advice, If you want your business to operate well and to be successful do not talk to potential customers like that. I have spoken about this experience to many of my friends and I wasn't going to leave a review but they have all encouraged me too. Maybe the food is wonderful but we did not get to experience it! 0 stars for the service.

Owned by the same family since 1945, this wonderful restaurant is tucked away in a courtyard. With exterior and interior tables, crisp white tablecloths and elegant service, we had a great lunch. The focus is on fresh seafood and they do it so well. The prices are just right, definitely not too high and the service was attentive and humorous. Well done, we’ll return.

Superb food. First English restaurant where we have quality food. It took us 4 years to find anything like this and tried quite a few places 😂😂😂.I guess the cheff is Italian, French or Spanish . Great service and atmosphere !!!

Literally the worst seafood we have ever attempted to eat. Born and raised on the Gulf Coast (US), spent teenage summers on the coast of Maine (US) working lobster traps and digging for clams and mussels. Point to a sunny sandy beach loaded with fresh seafood and we’ve probably been there. This was vile. Left the full tower there and went for a burger. Staff was nice, place was quaint. The end.

Lightly battered and fried oysters were delicious. The almost 45 minute wait for main course was unacceptable, no apology, no napkins and a surly manager. Won’t be eating here again

Freshest seafood we have had in England! Everything was tasty and the service was fantastic. We went on a quiet night and had the restaurant to ourselves, which meant we could chat with the manager about our future travels.

Best seafood in Brighton!! I was blown away by the flavours coming from the seafood platter, the chef has done an incredible job at mixing simplicity with a bit of culinary genius to make some really exciting flavours. My personal favourite was the crab pot and the croquettes. The oysters were as fresh as you could ever wish for and the thick chocolate chunks in the brownie were to die for! I can't say enough about how friendly and helpful the staff were! A big thank you to Jonathan, Erik, and Ella for going above and beyond for our table and making this a very special evening 🥂 10/10 will be coming back soon!

Had the 'flashback' menu and was very tasty, would easily give 5/5. Only issue was service was slow at the beginning (up to taking orders) and end (getting bill and payment) of our meal/stay. Would happily go back when next in Brighton.

The first time we have been here for ages. It must be because English's is such a Brighton institution, that it gets forgotten, as new places open. Our lunch was absolutely superb. I am a retired chef, and know what I am talking about. This was as good a meal as I have ever had, I have eaten and worked in many fine eating places and thoroughly recommend English's Great food, excellent wine and reasonable prices. What more could you want?

Very enjoyable lunch here. I had the set lunch, which was excellent value and very tasty. I loved the setting; old fashioned and elegant. Service was friendly and timing good. Fish and chips was as good as I hoped from a specialist fish restaurant. The pear eau de vie was a lovely touch.

We had the battered haddock and chips x2...fish was ok, nothing special, but half the size of any I've ever had before. But, literally, there were under 10 chips on each plate! And charged £20 per plate for the privilege! plus supposed voluntary 12.5% service charge plus 50p per fish dish for the fisherman's something or other...but not voluntary as all added to bill without asking. Would not return, utter rip off...£60 for x2 fish and chips, x1 330ml beer, 1 glass white wine!! Ridiculous

Good food, a great atmosphere and selection on offer. As visitors to Brighton this was our first visit. It will not be our last. Looking forward to our return 😀.

This place never disappoints me. I would probably call it one of the best fish restaurants in Brighton. The only drawback is the restaurant layout it is tiny with tiny stairs and toilets.

A delicious meal with impeccable service. I think the best fish pie I have ever have served with king prawn and scallop on the top. No hesitation whatsoever in recommending this restaurant. I rarely leave reviews but felt I had to for this special place

Very good seafood and very good service. Price is definitely not “££” though; more like “££££”. Still, would recommend.

What's happened to your lobster bisque, little taste, thin, citrussy, little fish taste? Needed cream, brandy, and was too salty, and I love salt. Main course was superb, sea bass with crab beurre blanc and coriander oil, fantastic flavours... as was the sweet, chocolate cake with kiwi,and salted goat ricotta, just great. I've eaten here since the 1960s, your fish soup used to be superb. We are late. Had you run out and topped it up with water? I jest. Wine was very good, and my gluten intolerant friend was very happy as to gf options.

This is a busy pub on Church Street that sells a few real ales but If you are a vegetarian this is where you'll get one of the best meals in Brighton, try the nut roast wellington or the veggie burgher great portions and great value for money you will not be disappointed

Not bad at all really, bar staff seem to have a hearing issue. Ordered, only one meal came had to ask about second 10 minutes after first arrived. Manager, Benji, was great!! Gave us two complimentary drinks to apologise.
