Some of the worst sushi we've had in London which is what we feared when we saw no Japanese chefs behind the counter. The rice used in the nigiri was cold, hard and chewy. Fish not much better. I left half of it. Vegetables in the signature box also all not fresh and chewy. No cocktails on the menu. Dining space felt more like a food court. The service was the only redemption. All in all the only thing high end about this place is the price

It was a nice place but food wise was disappointed did not tickle my senses. I was super sad as I love Akira so much that I have been there so many times. And to be honest so many good starters and cocktails were not available unlike akira. Service and atmosphere were absolutely wonderful. And can’t fault the beautiful service.

A wonderful experience, I discovered about this restaurant on Vogue and realize now why they were saying that the way they present food is unique and beautiful. Personnel is very kind and the overall experience is really worth. It is also a perfect restaurant to pick for a business lunch.

Remarkable quality of sushi, sashimi and the A5 wagyu. Sashimi box is just full of joy, all of them are fresh and delicious with great decorations too. It makes you think which piece you should try next as there is too many options!! The highlight was wagyu. Normally they service A4 grade Wagyu which is good enough but we upgraded to A5 wagyu with supplements. I can say it was definitely worth it. It comes as rare so you can cook the side bit more on the hot stone and make sure the fat is well melted between the meat and it just melts in your mouth with full of juicy and fatty beefy flavour. It goes so well with other vegetables, rice and soup. Whole course was very satisfied, sake and tea were lovely too and the dessert was delicious. The only problem was that the restaurant and tables are very small, every time someone has to pass they are touching you and you have to pull your chair tightly to make some space and let them pass through. Because of this the waitress spilled water on my trouser by accident. She sincerely apologised so it was understandable.

Different experience, when we got in I was expecting flavors that would be unforgettable but I did not feel that. The products are good quality but ordering the 3 course menu and getting sashimi and sushi you get a bit tired of the same flavors. The service was good but you feel a tension between the waiters and the cooking staff. Otherwise seeing the kitchen and how they worked was nice everything was clean. I just expected more than what I received.

how do i even begin. the 5 course wagyu omakase was a great dining experience. the sashimi course was beautifully presented and every part was delicious. the quality of the fish was outstanding, ranging from the ‘normal’ tuna to the otoro. the scallops were fresh and the freshly grated wasabi was a nice treat. the wagyu had a great marbling and the light sea salt brings out the flavor of the beef. the ambiance was quiet and classy, and our waiter was very friendly. overall a great restaurant for refined japanese cuisine.

We have been coming here since it opened. I haven’t gone since 2017. We sat at the bar and saw the cook. It was SOOO disappointing to see him take out pre packaged Foie Gras balls being served or sauces coming out of commercially made jars or Mochi balls just being cut in half that was not produced AT THE RESTAURANT. sauces from jars?!?!

Attended dinner 2x and did not disappoint. REAL WASABI!

Great location, helpful staff and outstanding food

Warning - Engawa randomly spikes up prices (13.12.23) - We booked the 3 course omakase wagyu set 2 days in advance of attending, but they suddenly jacked-up the price of the set menu by £10 to total £90 pre taxes. Absurd... I should have taken a screenshot of the website showing the menus original level of £80. Such a scam... The waitress gave a weak excuse saying they "swapped out a salad for 2 shreds of beef in a tiny pot, causing the price increase" what a joke. Insulting. If bookings are made within 1 month of a price increase the original price should be honored. But engawa are too greedy and randomly spike prices. Why jack-up the price in mid-Dec? Its so odd and random. BTW - the atmosphere sucks as they have rammed 30 people into a space for 10. The tables are barely big enough for the dishes. The prices are so crazy high that you would assume they catch individual fish from japan and hand deliver them to your plate... lol. They should be ashamed.

Food & ambience is lovely… but waitress asks too many questions and repeats themselves. - also I sat by the counter and waitress kept on bumping into my back the whole evening… this should not be the case - I didn’t say anything because I was on a date but even they made a comment about that..

Great little restaurant - enjoyed the 3 course Omakase which I highly recommend - a little bit of everything plus your choice of sushi or Wagyu. Food was amazing and service was friendly and attentive. We’ll definitely be going back.

Tavolo prenotato alle 21e30 ma arrivati lì ci avvisano che solitamente la cucina chiude a quell'ora. Ci mettono fretta per ordinare da un menù con poca scelta e ripetitivo, qualità mediocre e quantità misere. Prezzi nettamente oltre la media. Praticamente cacciati dopo 40 minuti con un conto di £180 in due senza aver bevuto alcolici. La peggior esperienza londinese mai avuta.

Don’t often give a 5 ⭐️ review but this deserves it. It’s a small restaurant, but nevertheless manages to create a cosy ambiance. The service was fantastic: knowledgeable, professional, and always with a smile. The menu isn’t at the lower end of the price spectrum, but is it worth it? I think so - it’s difficult to find a weakness. The wine list isn’t large but offered a superb range. And the open kitchen works really well, the chefs deserve huge credit. A great evening. Huge thanks.

I have been coming to this tiny restaurant hidden in Ham Yard ever since it opened and during most of my regular London visits, and I have always loved it and the quality of its dishes and the service team. Yet, the last few times there was always something that wasn't right. When you order the Wagyu beef on the hot stone, you would expect the stone to be really hot, so that you can do the finish to the meat the way you like it. Twice, the stone wasn't hot enough - the first time I just didn't eat the meat and the second time, I gave it back and asked to be served again with a stone that is actually hot. There had always been really good and nice staff that served at the tables but on my most recent visit the head waiters that had been there for a few years (two guys who I always thought were Spanish) were all gone and replaced by new staff and I didn't get the service I was used to at all. This was also the second time when the "hot stone" was served lukewarm. The dishes had generally been great, but things have changed over the course of the last 12 months. For example, the O'Toro Sashimi dish used to be so great with a really good portion of O'Toro fish, but also the way it was prepared like some kind of tower with green veggies. Unfortunately, the last couple of times, the fish became less and the veggies more. Well, I will give this restaurant one more try and if not satisfied, will look for other alternative choices in London.

Menu assez original avec des petites portions de différents plats. Visuellement ça donne envie mais malheureusement le goût ne suit pas… Par ailleurs nous n’avons pas apprécié avoir été forcé de payer par carte bleue (ceci n’ayant été précisé nulle part ni sur la réservation ni à notre arrivée) bien que nous ayons précisé que nous étions des touristes et que nous avions fait spécialement du change.

Very nice neighborhood, with cosy lights and friendly people. Pleasant welcome at the entrance. We took the 5 course Wagyu menu. Very good. Really exceptional. All the little trays, and each bite was prepared with so much attention and care. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and look at the chefs making all this delicious food 👌for us. The service was very good, paying attention to the customer and refilling our water and wine all the time. What an amazing evening. We can recommend this restaurant! Thisnis the most underrated high end sushi gem in London. The restaurant has been here in this little muse in Soho for many years, and I have been visiting it since it opened, the quality NEVER ceases to inpress, the menue changes with the seasons, but yhe quality, atmosphere and value you get here is second to non. An inpecable place for a business meeting, a date or just to go out and eat. It is small, cosy and takes you back to a little restaurant in Kyoto or the alleys of Shibuya in Tokyo, although the food is pretty much from all over Japan. Love it and well done to the chef, staff and hosts for keeping this diamond of a restaurant going without a drop in quality or consistency.

Lovely 3 course sushi omakase at Engawa. A quiet location on Ham yard, I found the service and attention to detail impeccable. The sushi / nigiri was quite good ( the fish were slightly repetitive and perhaps that is the one thing I would like to see changed). Definitely recommend coming here solo (as I did) ; also great for a quiet mid-week date.

We ordered the set dinner and the wagyu was the best I have ever had. Regarding sushi set, it would be much better if salmon roe suhsi and uni sushi are included and the portion of each sushi is a bit small. The staff were very friendly and polite. Overall, the food is execellent and will definitely go again.

Been here for 10 years and love the place. Trying hard to like the new team but am struggling. New manager is super monotone and a lot of amateurs who do not understand how to keep old customers the same way as the old team did.

Having never tried a sushi restaurant or any Kind of Japanese food before I was a bit apprehensive at first but I soon realized how great the food was. The service was effective and friendly. The restaurant was a bit smaller than I had thought but it didn't distract from the culinary experience. It was also my first time trying sake not something that I would try again but still glad I had a go.

The 3 course omaze menu was the perfect anniversary treat. Very nice staff, special food. I appreciated that they had noted my special request about a choice of seating in advance - I have hip issues so can find sitting for longer periods difficult and I found their banquette seating very comfortable.

Engawa is a phenomenal Japanese restaurant with highly trained and skilled chefs. It is an open restaurant so you can book to sit on the normal dining tables or sit in front of the chefs and watch them prepare everything before your eyes. It is a memorable experience and worth the price of admission. The food and service was great as expected, however, failed to exceed my expectations beyond what was delivered. This wouldn’t discourage me from coming back as I enjoyed the experience itself and atmosphere throughout. Every guest was treated with care and they made us feel extremely comfortable. I was amazed at the quality of their ingredients and the how efficient they were with each dish prepared. It felt like something was missing when it came to the food and it could be a fault of my own for not ordering more plates on the day. I highly recommend you visit here and just for the experience and atmosphere alone. The price is on the higher side and you may limit yourself on what you’re willing to spend.

A real hidden gem. The service, atmosphere and authenticity of the restaurant were fantastic. It can be expensive but worth every penny.

It's ok. My friend and I made the reservation on the day so only a counter table was available. I usually enjoy being at a counter table as I enjoy chatting with a chef but none of them didn't look like they wanted to and it was rather disappointing. Also my friend was told off for not giving enough space for the manager to walk pass etc. so we decided to done outside. He didn't come to get our order for a while and we were also slow eating so we felt we were so rushed at the end. The Omakase Five courses had a lot of volume and I think it would have been helpful if they could explain that. We could not eat the dessert as we were so full and we asked to take it back home. This restaurant has a strict policy not let their customer take anything back home. I understand if it was raw sashimi but cake? Such a waste of food.... Food was good but not exceptional. Miso soup in a coffee cup and served lukewarm was no no for the native Japanese like me. Overall the service really let us down. There was only one toilet and I hated the music!

Had the 5 course Wagyu Omakase With a bottle of Riesling. Food was ok, some hot items seemed little cold, such as the rice but the A4 Wagyu was nice and the sashimi course was enjoyable with the variety of items. The place is small but it has a nice atmosphere and the servers were friendly.

This is not a proper omakase, neither for quality and for price. So, if you ever tried a proper omakase I suggest to don’t go there. Normal sushi but so expensive!
