I ordered Chicken Hong Kong style. As it was a takeaway. The dish was quite cold on arrival home. Although we live only 5 minutes away. On trying to eat this half cold tough chicken. It became very obvious it had been heated up. For goodness sake, Could you try a bit harder to make a decent meal for once. I couldn't be bothered to return it to you, but it really is quite unacceptable. After all my husband paid you £19. For your muck. I won't bother with you again. It's fair to say you don't give a damn about your customer's. . You should hang your head in shame. I thought it might have improved but it hasn't...!!!!!!

We turned up without booking, the greeting was friendly and we were quickly seated. The service was prompt as was the food. Clearly freshly cooked and so tasty! Generous sized portions (in fact we had to have half boxed up to take home with us). We heartily recommend and if we were local it would definitely become a regular night out.

Tried this place out after not being for a long time as my last meal wasn't great and hoped they had improved but they haven't. The food was so bland, greasy and flavourless, i tried to add salt but it was so damp none came out. The decor is terrible too, very outdated, the only good poing was the staff who were friendly

Small aging building located quite central to the main street in Kirkwall. Empire Chinese Restaurant quite frankly is just not up to standard. I guess its still standing owing to the fact its the only chinese in Kirkwall. I was in with a group of friends. We were shown to a room with dingy lighting and very stereotypical chinese decorations. We had to walk past towels hanging on the wall, and a good few customers crammed into a tiny waiting area for their takeaway, and bags of random sweeties priced at £9?! On being sat at our table, the waiter was pleasant, he asked us for our drinks order and suggested the tsingtao beer, most of us went for this. I opted for a can of coke. Unfortunately what I received was sweet water. I would be pretty confident in saying it was from a bottle sitting on the shelf. It was replaced with no hassle. The menu was full of your standard chinese items, good variety with a few surprises like lamb. What shocked me was the ridiculous pricing. For example... £13 for a portion of house fried rice? Ive eaten at a good few chinese restaurants and never have I seen rice priced this high. I was so shocked infact that I did not order anything. I struggled to come to terms with my own personal order consisting of a starter, rice and a main coming to over £40. I was allowed by my party to taste food items for the benefit of this review. We ordered ribs for starter. There was no meat on them? You're paying £7 for a plate of bones. They were covered in onions and a small salad. I assume to make the plate look bigger. The meat was tough, and over cooked. Another party member ordered crispy wontons, and when they arrived the majority was pastry, with a small ball of what seemed to be potato inside? Again it's the first I've ever seen of this. Whatever it was it was definitely not chicken or prawn. On the upside the satay chicken was okay and the chicken was cooked. Waiting times for the mains weren't too bad, they came with plates that would probably be quite dangerously hot for a small child. When the mains arrived they looked nice. Presentation wasn't top quality but we weren't expecting fine dining. We had lamb and black bean sauce. The sauce was nice, the lamb was tender and on the whole was a very nice change to have in a chinese resturant, accompanied with egg fried rice. The House special fried rice looked good, good sized portion (which for £13 you would expect) with good chunks of meat on the top. The flavour was lacking, however, and it was very greasy. Kung pow chicken looked good, but had zero flavour, and unfortunatley the meat was described as 'chewing cardboard'. The noodles were good and as a plus not too greasy. We had an issue with one of our dishes, in short someone in the kitchen wasn't wearing a hair net and as a result a strand of hair ended up in a main. Again, main looked nice but unable to comment on the taste. A hair is enough to put you off. I will note the managment were happy enough to cancel this off our bill. Our other main crispy shredded chicken with spicy sauce was a let down as well. It tasted as if the sauce had been sitting in a bain maree for a while and just mixed in as and when the order came on. The chicken itself was fine but nothing to write home about. We begrudgingly paid our bill and left. I do believe that this chinese needs some guidance in the kitchen. It can't keep relying on being the only chinese in Kirkwall. It needs to up it's game if they plan to keep charging the prices they are. I personally will not be back. I believe there is a second chance for most places, but in this instance it will not come from me or my party. I really hope this chinese finds it's rhythm again soon, because Kirkwall deserves a quality chinese. Follow me @the_viking_diner for more in depth reviews.

They don't give the price when you order for a delivery. Prices are quite high. This does not compare though with the price the driver asked for the delivery. 5.6miles = £15!! We are on holiday so maybe he took advantage of this. Our own take away delivers this distance for £3.50. I know fuel is a bit more here and everything is more expensive so we would have happily paid up to £7.50 to possibly £10. Food was OK, chicken curry was very bland and bulked out with masses of onions.

We popped into Empire for a change of pace from sea food (fish and chips) or beef so prevalent in Scotland. We picky about Chinese food due to the place near our home in Minneapolis (Legendary Spice), but I digress. It smelled like good Chinese food when we walked in, though not in an over-powering-our-ventilation-is-substandard way. The decor was much less Chinese-restauranty than many of its siblings in the U.S. and more comfortable chairs than many restaurants in Scotland. The menu has many of the standards you would expect, with the noticeable absence of tofu or mock duck. Both our dishes, my roast pork Szechuan style, and her crispy shredded beef came in a sort of sweet and our sauce, which I normally don’t care for, but was pretty tasty, if not very spicy. If you like it spice, maybe make a point of it. Both dishes relied on onions more that I care for. The fried rice was fine, just rice fried lightly with egg, nothing else, and not very greasy. The best dish was the side of bean sprouts, crisp, flavorful, but if ordered again, I would hold the onions. Chinese tea was piping hot. Big portions. Could have shared one dish and one side. And did I mention they were fast? Lightning fast service and food prep. A good change of pace. Exercise a little assertiveness, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Probably 3.5 stars is more accurate.

He managed to cook dishes to suit all our needs. The staff were very super friendly and very observant to all our needs... eg. Came here for a takeaway after a busy day. It was myself and two other companions ordering but all ordering separately. My first friend ordered crispy shredded beef in a spicy sauce and noodles with bean sprouts. Overall tasted fine but was extremely concerned about how fast the food was brought out in the restaurant for us to collect. My friend had ordered and the food was out and ready to eat in under 5 minutes. My second friend had salt and chilli chicken (again who ordered after my first friend). The taste was average but would do for tonight’s dinner I had ordered a duck chow mein and was shocked to see that when I started eating the food, there was a thick black hair on a piece of duck right at the top of the meal. (See picture below) I had to leave the meal as I was put off by the hairThe duck chow mein was £7, salt and chilli chicken was £6.50 for not much chicken and over a tenner for the beef and beansprouts. Was far too expensive and just not up to standard at all. Will not be returning. Tourists avoid!

We encountered few other (if any) Chinese restaurants in the Orkneys and while this one was average, we suggest it could be much better if forced to lift its game by strong competition. Perhaps it is mainly patronised by locals as a take-away venue, but as a dine-in experience, it is acceptable, but certainly not exceptional. Very uninviting from the outside, reasonably bland food (although plenty of it), and certainly quite expensive for Chinese dining. However, we experienced excellent service - although initially we were the only ones dining with one other table being occupied later. In all, we suggest it may be a good take-away choice but its emptiness on the night we were there suggests it is not a favoured dine-in.

Ordered take out Friday night and even that sugary standby Sweet and Sour Pork was edible. The Kung Pao chicken was tasty with a nice crunch of cashews...they didn't skimp...and just the right amount of heat. However, the standout dish of the night was a super Salt and Pepper fried squid with pepper strips. Nicely browned, the fat little bite sized nuggets were both tender and spicy. Nothing special, very geared to local bland tastebuds. they pretty much have a captive audience so can get away with it. A little competition would probably see them either out of business or having to try a great deal harder!

Chicken fried rice turned out to be dry tasteless rice, with tiniest amount of chicken.. I think they are taking advantage of being the only Chinese around with their overpriced awful food. Worst Chinese meal ever...

Before the crazy night out at Fusion, The Kwokcrew ventures out for food. We thought we had to try out the only Chinese that Kirkwall could offer. I expected great things from this restaurant however we found that the service did not match how semi-good the food was. I was disgusted at how badly mannered the service was. Example 1: Our Waiter placed the bill at our table as soon as we just finished having our meals without asking us if we wanted the bill in the first place. Unreal!!! Making us feel like being push out! Example 2: Waiter was rushing to get the meals down the table. Quick service however didn't ask if we enjoyed the food and look very annoyed at times. Don't think he enjoys his job. On the other hand, the food was semi-good but as a Chinese loving foodie, I felt disappointed! Not Good Enough! Overall did not live up to my expectation so 4/8... but Orkney trip 8/8 mate.

Arrived without booking on a rainy Sunday evening which was no problem as there was only another three diners. Both the outside and inside of this restaurant look pretty outdated but if you pass by you will miss good Chinese food.We decided to have the set meal for two at £16.00 per head which was very good value indeed. All the dishes were piping hot and tasty and we left very little. The staff were all pleasant and cheerful. You will be glad you gave it a try.

My husband then had banana split which was so thick we couldn't see the banana lol but it was great for him as he loves cream & ice-cream, I had pineapple fritter with cream & ice-cream I know I shouldn't finished it but it was so good I had to.

From the outside this looks like a fairly neglected bland concrete industrial unit. Inside it does improve but I can rate it as no better than average as far as its cuisine goes. Service was OK but nothing special, and nothing about the place makes me want to return in a hurry.

Large order for a hungry party of 6. Food cooked very promptly despite all their telephone problems that day. Food was lush! Prawn crackers the best I've tasted!

My wife and I ordered takeout of pancake rolls, one chicken dish fried rice and 2 drinks and it ended up about the same as we have been paying in this area for full meals. The rolls were quite good while the chicken dish was average at best. If you need takeout Chinese I Kirkwall it is OK, just don't expect excellence

A rather run of the mill restaurant. Furniture and decor very drab. Food was ok, but you got a large serving. Staff seemed a bit disinterested and hurried. Won't be rushing back there.

Are here last name night. It was very quiet. Welcomed in by the staff who were extremely nice. Chicken satay to start. Very nice flavour. Chicken and beansprouts for main. It was nice but tbh it was bland. 2 cans of Diet Coke and bill came to £23. I thought that was expensive.

During our week long stay in Kirkwall we visited this place few times for the evening meal. Overall we had a nice experience dining here. Friendly and welcoming staff, good, if not great, food. With limited family dining options in Kirkwall and with the only Chinese restaurant to choose from we were not at all disappointed. From the second visit onwards the staff and chef became very friendly and used to have long chat with them about family, food, work, London, etc etc. Quality of the food was good with reasonable quantity. We observed that many of the diners were locals and repeat customers which was a good sign. As in Orkney, with no usual high street restaurants around, the prices are slightly high compared to similar places in the mainland UK. It is within walking distance from the Kirkwall harbour along the Junction Road, going past the Kirkwall Visitor Centre and the Orkney Library. Car parking along the side of the road is free in the evenings. If you go further from this restaurant and turn right at the roundabout into Pickaquoy Road you can get to a big TESCO, Lidl and a Co-op store. Will definitely eat here if we ever visit Orkney again!

Smallish restaurant in Kirkwall, have dined here many times both at lunchtime and in the evening. An extensive menu in the evening and special lunches during the day, good food, good value, pleasant enough surroundings not luxurious but clean and adequate. The staff have always been polite and efficient

What can you expect of a Chinese restaurant on a Scottish island? It was exactly what we expected. Decent food, cold Tsingtaos and nice, unintelligibly waiters and waitresses :-)
