Ellie Mays in Antrim

As a yorkshire lad brought up on real food, Ellie Mays just fits the bill. Had Roast Beef and Yorksire pudding, which hit the mark for taste and satisfaction. On our recent visit, we tried chicken stacks on a bed of champ with tobacco onions and a whiskey and pepper sauce. It was really tasty. If you want good wholesome food, make Ellie Mays a go-to place.

When we arrived we had table booked with high chair waitress not pleasant at all waited 15 mins before food order taken and another 15 mins till we had to ask for dessert menu while staff 3 of them stood at bar wouldn't go back

After reading some of the negative reviews I had to check that I was in the same place as I had an great experience. My welcome, service and food were all excellent. Highly recommended and will definitely visit again when in the area.

The most thing that lets this establishment down is the poor customer service and the absolute rudeness of the waitresses, not family or child friendly, the attitude of some of the female waitress is very off putting and this is widely known, plus dining area is far too cold.

Food was lovely very old fashioned place but enjoyed it

Seated immediately then left 32 minutes for taking the food order, complained twice, was told after drinks order and 20 minutes wait the kitchen was busy, no apology, waited a further 25 mins for food to arrive, counted 11 empty tables, had we not ordered drinks, we would have walked out

Went here on Christmas Day for lunch. Standard of food was excellent. Two of our party were gluten free and they handled this brilliantly

Traditionally styled and homely .. great staff very helpful and the chicken curry is fab ! So too are the chicken Goujons :-)

I booked Boxing Day dinner a few months back I was the first on the list, I booked for 1pm slot for 9 adults and 3 children, we arrived at 12.45pm and we were put next door in a room with no atmosphere cold and floor was filthy, it was a terrible table we waited and waited our dinner arrived at 2.10pm we were freezing so we asked to have the fire lit we were then smoked out we were covered in smoke reduculous, I asked could we be moved and was told no were we were would fill up soon no it didn't nobody came in, food was nice but the experience was terrible we will not be back at Christmas had to pay extras also, not a happy customer. This is so close to my heart,it was where I brought my mother and father on special occasions when younger it never let's me down foods fantastic service amazing and it doesn't cost a body organ,a perfect night out.

Went here for a catch-up with some of my family. We arrived early so sat and had a drink at the bar whilst we waited on everyone else arriving. Got to our table and orders were taken pretty quickly. The food arrived in a decent time as well, maybe around 10 mins for starters then another 5/10 mins for mains after that. I had a Christmas dinner and have to say it was lovely, the only small complaint I would have is that the mashed potatoes were not as creamy as I would have expected, although with gravy on the plate this is only a minor issue. A complimentary bowl of chips for every two dinners was nice to have as well. It took quite some time for the waitress to come and take our dessert order, I am not sure if we were forgotten about but we ended up waiting about 15 mins after getting the dessert menu and placing our order. This was not a big deal as we were all sitting having a drink and a good chat but we did start to get a little impatient. Dessert was lovely, my wife got a chocolate cake and ice cream and it looked fantastic. Would definitely come back here again, but a couple of minor issues mean I would give 4 stars for now.

Been here twice, always an amazing experience, staff amazing and friendly, booked online via there webpage, prompt response and extremely polite. Food portions very generous, sides top notch, and service and food service time was prompt and quick and piping hot

Very good the meal was excellent.

I tried the vegan Thai curry which was good. But the service took almost an hour after we ordered for the food to arrive and also the place we were seated had lots of cobwebs and was unclean.

Pie was chewy. Not tender enough. 2 lumps of gristle . Not happy. Cold and no fire on.

Arrived at Ellie may and was shown to our table beside front door and slot machine.waiter got us drinks then said he would take our order.waited on him to come back only to be told by another waitress I would have to wait till he serves two tables of about six to seven (spoken in an unmannerly way).We paid for our drinks and left and went to dunary inn had a wonderful meal.

First time trying this place out. Felt so un-welcome by waitress, and it was not even busy. Table and my cup were quite dirty and stained, but I cleaned it myself (with baby wipes) as waitress was not to be seen for a while at the time. Food was ok, pepper chicken was too dry, pepper sauce was bland. Beef Guinness pie pastry could have been in the oven a bit longer, could not taste Guinness at all. Rib dinner is ok, but the reason why I gave the two stars review is because the customer service needs to be improved.

We had an excellent lunch here, food was excellent and service as always was friendly!

I had prime rib-eye steak cooked perfectly medium rare with garlic and parmesan fries and they were delicious. Quick service and friendly staff would definitely eat here again

Was here today because we heard good reports. My personal opinion is that the food is nice but very very small portions and defo not worth the money. I had ribs for starters an only got 2 not very much meat on the 2 measly bones an a wee tiny bit of lettuce and onion then I seen a girl sitting at another table an she had the same only she got 4. On to mains tiny steel what I can only describe as dog water bowls. Ask for another drink and when it came to the table the glass was just over half way full. Sorry but won't be back.

I was there with my family my son, daughter in law and my 2 grandchildren. I was very slow service as were were only 2 staff on the floor. We ordered starters which were eventually servedand were fine. However, the mains were served to myself ,my son and my grand children. My granddaughter had finished her meal and my daughter in law was still waiting for her meal. Very bad service as the same thing happened at the table next to us. Its very unlikley we will return.

Sirloin beef 🥩 is just OK. It is too well done cook when order is medium on top with fried onion so the beef taste is gone a bit. Service is a bit slow and close early about 9PM even summer time.

The food is good but IT IS NOT DOG FRIENDLY, in spite of what the headline says. We just got turned away. We have eaten here several times and the food is good and in the past dogs were allowed but not today🤷🏼‍♂️

Not in Ireland much and the 7.30 food cut off for most places was annoying. But 100% worth the wait. Proper good pub.

So went to Ellie mays today for lunch with friends, waited over an hour for our order only to be served luke warm food on a filthy plate! Then we were actually argued with by the "so called manager" a young guy wearing a filthy uniform who was very rude. Whoever the owner is really really needs to educate his or her son about customer service and personal hygiene. The one star is here because there is no way to post this review without it.

Quite large portion for the meal but very tasty. Staff friendly and efficient, would suggest that either wipes or finger bowl be supplied with spicy wings and ribs.

Called in on bank holiday Monday (29th May 2023) at around 8pm. Ordered Chinese chicken with chips, chicken goujons with garlic fries and a pint of bud lite. Where to begin, the Chinese chicken was way to over cooked and hard, the pitta bread was stale, the chips cooled and greasy. My partners goujons were that greasy she removed the batter but still couldn't eat the chicken as it was so overcooked, the garlic fries were swimming in butter with no garlic taste at all. As a chef I don't usually complain and just don't return. Now I wish I had complained and taken pictures as I have been ill for the past 2 days with the little food I did eat. If the manager or management would like to check this out my bill was £29.90 and paid by card at 8.26pm. We were served by a young male server who after seeing the amount of food left on the plate had to as twice if we were finished. Please take notice of this review and as an experienced chef I would never recommend this restaurant for foo

I scraped the batter off and tried to eat the chicke, but it was like goo. The garlic fries were in a bowl of grease. The young waiter who lifted the plates just did that and no more. Foods great but like most places now the charge for a soft drink is going through the roof.. Expect to pay around £25 a head when you include the drinks.

I love eating here, the foods great and the staff are excellent. I recommend the curry.

Me and my friend called in here for lunch as we had been before and it was good, not such a, good experience this time, I had bbq ribs which were dry tough tasteless and had about one tablespoon of bbq sauce on the top, some chips were hard in the middle to, my friends was edible if nothing else, very overpriced £40 for bland boring food, staff weren't overly helpful either or pleasant, so I definitely wouldn't recommend or be returning extremely poor.

Food is amazing, big portions and full of flavour! Only downside is, anytime we've attended Ellie Mays it's been in quite a large group anything from 8-14 people (Family Meal), each time they have forgotten part of someone's order even tho it has been prebooked. Though they have it sorted relatively quickly. Staff are friendly & helpful.

The steak was really very good and the sauce. The vegetables were over cooked and the chips very poor.

Great local pub with excellent food at great prices

Used to run this place 20 years ago and never in my day would we serve this. To call that meatball a kids burger is an absolute disgrace. Steak asked for medium rare and came out overcooked, but no staff came near us to ask if everything was ok, or I would have sent it back. Have ate here a lot of times, hence why we booked a table for my dad's 70th, but utterly disappointed and to be honest, won't be back.

First time visiting Ellie Mays and will defo be the last. On arrival bar staff were ignorant, unhelpful and looked sad to be working. The girl with the blonde hair and glasses was so unhelpful and ignorant informing us we didnt have time to decide what we wanted as the kitchen was 5 minutes from closing, this immediately put pressure on us. The food was well 2/10 at the most the price didnt reflect the quality nor the presentation. The hole experience was not pleasant and we wont be visiting again. Bar staff should be more welcoming and pleasant this would make a big difference.

My wife and I had never been to Northern Ireland, so on our latest trip we decided to spend a couple of days exploring the Belfast area. Our first night at Templepatrick we looked around for places to eat that were somewhat close to our hotel. We decided on Ellie Mays because the reviews were pretty good and it was only a few miles from our hotel. When we arrived, we walked into the restaurant and stood in the area where you are to wait to be seated. For five minutes we stood there and no one as much as spoke to us. No welcome, no, “I’ll be with you shortly”, no recognition at all that we were even there. Just as we were getting ready to walk out, the lady behind the bar stopped what she was doing and took us to a table. Please advise staff to at least acknowledge people when they come in. My wife and I both had the fish and chips dinner. The food was abysmal. The cod had absolutely no flavor, which is a sure sign that the fish was well past its prime. I can honestly say that the only thing I tasted while eating the fish was the flavor of the oil it was cooked in. Tarter sauce was bland and the peas were barely above room temp. We told our server how bad the food was and she apologized and offered us two free beers, which I declined because I was driving and did not want to chance an encounter with Northern Ireland’s finest law enforcement. So, even though Ellie Mays has a nice atmosphere, I cannot recommend someone eating there. Their food was just not worth the price.

Busy bar restaurant but food came quickly, was hot and tasty. Staff pleasant and friendly. If you want a plate of reasonably priced hot food with no fuss and bother this is your place :)

Great food on a miserable day, just what the doctor ordered

Sat for over 15 mins waiting to give my food order, ended up I just walked out. Not enough staff.

Extremely disappointing! Travelled a considerable distance to have lunch here. Service very slow. Both ordered Cod Fillet & chips. Menu stated cod was crispy beer battered. On arrival food was cold & batter was oily & soggy. Chips tasted like they had been cooked in oil that needed changed! Only 2 waitresses serving a busy restaurant so unable to get their attention. Eventually as one passed we explained the issue. She lifted plates & walked to the kitchen without uttering a word. After she spoke with the chef she returned & stated that as part of the fish on one meal was eaten that we should pay for that meal. We did pay & left but goes without saying we will never be back.

Lovely for all the family and we were made very welcome by staff and food excellent as we always call when we are in there area.👍

Dear folk intending to dine in Ellie May's Dunadry be forewarned you will be wasting your hard earned money. Any self respecting chef or cook would refuse to send out food not fit for human consumption. My family had the most disgusting inedible food, food term used loosely. We will never return. Please keep your money and use it somewhere else. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Great gor food & a night out eith friends

Arrived in a group for an organised quiz night and got told we were not expected and were refused service for 45mins. Staff were dismissive and rude.

Turned up for a school pub quiz last night only to be told twice they knew nothing about it. Let's ignore the calls and emails then. Finally get upstairs, no heat, no bar. Get told by staff they won't serve us for an hour? Some hospitality! Staff and clientele looked miserable!

I’ve no axe to grind here, just giving an honest review. We are not from this area but we were in the vicinity visiting a donkey sanctuary and dropped in for a spot of lunch. Never been before just went on speculation. Wife had a starter of breaded garlic mushrooms then two mains of the house burger with chips. Wasn’t looking haute cuisine or Michelin rated, just a fairly decent tasty lunch. Mushrooms were shop bought, fair enough, but deep fried (probably a number of times or at least partially prior for convenience) to within an inch of devastation. Virtually inedible, some stale salad and garlic sauce thrown on the plate as an afterthought, horrible!!! This unfortunately didn’t bode well for the main course, and we were not disappointed!!! Chips that were obviously fried in oil that hadn’t been changed in some while, it’s obvious to anyone that has sampled that taste before. Reheated, thick tough tasteless burgers thrown together haphazardly with again some pretty poor excuse for salad, partially grilled with some cheese atop, to pass for an edible “cheeseburger”. I managed less than half of burger and chips, my wife passed on everything on the plate after two mouthfuls!!! No chef worth his salt it with any pride in his work would ever send out dishes like that!!! The hay at the donkey sanctuary would have been more appetising. Notched up as a place that will not be visited again, and one that will not be recommended to friends or family. Wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy!!! Stay well clear!

Ordered the chilli chicken pasta after the Thai green curry wasn't available. As horrible as it sounds, the only way I can describe the taste of this is sweet cheese. There were 5 tiny chicken bits to which I ate 3. I asked for no parmesan cheese and when the waitress came over to clear the table, I asked if there was cheese in the sauce, her reply was no, only cheese on top, so I'm wondering why it tasted like a cheese sauce with sweet chilli when on the menu it states something like "creamy sauce with spicy chilli" in no way was it spicy at all. I actually asked if I had received the wrong dish. Apparently the sauce has a "mix of sweet and spicy" which isn't stated in the menu, I wouldn't have ordered what came as a sweet creamy sauce if I had known this. The foccacia that came with it was lovely tho I would definitely recommend it. I also read a few other reviews and a lot of the responses say "you should have mentioned it to the staff" what would have come from that? I ate maybe a quarter of my dish and got nothing from it, if they had taken a bit of money off the bill or maybe gave me my drink free I would have left a bit happier. Unfortunately won't be back. *in response to the restaurant's response ** I didn't try "so hard" to get a refund, I merely stated it tasted like cheese and then asked If had received the right dish. The majority of the food was not consumed, less than half of it was consumed you obviously think your portion sizes are bigger than they are. I agree that the dish shouldn't have tasted like "CHEESE" but it 100% did taste like "CHEESE". It won't be due to the lack of discount, the food didnt taste nice it's as simple as that, there was no need for the defensive take.

Food was good but it closed early and the atmosphere was a little dead.

We were at a birthday party tonight. Well looked after and soft background music. Buffet supper, well prepared and served. Good parking and I think suitable for wheel chairs. Went back and had a lovely evening meal. Their gammon steak is wonderfull.

Food was bland but eatable. ribs were v fatty. Chips were excellent but garlic chips v oily. Menu options like was i was transported back to the 90's. Staff did not want to be there. I had the delight of being tailgatted on the way there, she over took me right before the entrance to restaurant - she arrived 1 minute late for work.

Went today for a birthday lunch and after the server in top of the town was horrible we left and stumbled across Ellie May’s. I’ve never been as delighted to have bad service in top of the town as it worked out great by finding us Ellie May’s. The service was fantastic and staff friendly and fast. The restaurant has little nooks to sit which I prefer, it has a warm and friendly feel and lighting that’s perfect and isn’t too bright like many other places. My lasagne was beautiful and served with my choice of salad which was plentiful and had a delicious dressing. My husband had a chicken dish which he said was lovely. The portion sizes are brilliant and reasonably priced. I really can’t wait to visit again as their menu has wonderful choices. Ellie May’s will be my new go to place and I’ve already recommended to friends and family. If you’re reading this review and looking for something tasty in a comfortable / friendly setting then please; stop reading and try it - you won’t be disappointed.

Was here tonight with my family, for the first time and all I can say is beautiful. Our meals where delicious, puddings to die for. Staff are great, helpful, friendly. I had a couple of French martinis and believe me if your here definitely get one. All round friendly atmosphere, great service, beautiful food and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend and will be back soon. Thanks all at Ellie Mays for making our family's New Year's eve meal fab 👌

Food was very bad staff where lovely

Christmas day lunch was lovely, and we all enjoyed it very much. My mum said it was the best Christmas pudding she had ever tasted. The service was great, and we appreciated the chocolate and miniature whiskeys on the table. Only down side is my mum struggles with her mobility, and climbing the stairs was very difficult. A lift or dining downstairs would be more helpful for disabled guests.

3 weeks ago couldn't fault it this week with Canadian relations felt like we went wanted disappointing

Removed my previous review Only got five stars for food due to past visits. We have been coming here at least two three times a year for the last twenty years always good food and great service. However a previous visit showed up the service wasn't great still great food so why the bad review. Last Saturday we arrived after booking by phone on the Monday evening told the girl on the phone it was for the Xmas dinner X two But when we arrived were told that there was no booking when I showed the call log on my phone was told it was the wrong number My wife looked it up there and then and showed I had the right number whereas the girl changed her tune then tried to say I hadn't mentioned Xmas dinner and couldn't be served. At this point we walked out and found elsewhere that even though we should have booked found us a table and salvaged our afternoon date Top of the town if anyone is interested . After this last visit we don't think we will be back not if arguing with customers and trying to gaslight them is their reward for being long standing patrons

Great food, service and nice environment

We where seated right beside the door, with such a breeze coming through. We where asked what we wanted to drink before we even got the chance to get our coats off. It was another 10/15 minutes later than someone came to take our food order. No follow up checks. We had to go and get our own dessert menu fed up waiting again so we got the bill. To top it off tow of of the four of us got food poisoning from the BBQ ribs and roast beef. Overall the food was very poor and recommend much better places in Antrim to go for a good meal. Very disappointing

Very disappointing. Husband booked on Monday night for the Xmas dinner on Sat 10th Dec. When we arrived, after a wait, we were shown to a table. Staff seemed distracted, even though when we arrived the bar appeared to be quiet. We were then told we had not booked a Christmas dinner. My husband tried to explain that he had called on Monday night and booked a Christmas dinner. The waitress was argumentative and told my husband it was not the correct number, even though it was the number off the website. It was only after I pulled both the number on the website and number on my husbands phone, that she went and produced a book from behind the bar, which showed my husband's phone number scribbled in. She then became extremely defensive saying I took the order and you never booked the Xmas Dinner, even though when he booked on Monday night, I was with him and the phone was on speaker and he specifically asked to book the Xmas Dinner for two people. As her attitude was extremely defensive and argumentative, I knew there was no point in arguing so we both left and ended up having a lovely meal elsewhere. It is such a shame as we would regularly eat in Ellie Mays and the food and service in our experience was always been 5 star. We have noticed however since the pandemic the service has been a bit under par, with rushed service, at times. While I completely understand that bar staff are under immense pressure, particularly at this time of the year, I still don't believe that excuses staff being rude and argumentative towards what would have been, paying customers. Today's experience was the last straw and sadly we won't be back.

Visited yesterday evening . A few tables taken. Waitress asked had we booked. Said no and that wasn't an issue.. shown to table and immediately asked what drinks we would like. Reached us menu and 'specials'. Personally I was disappointed with menu choices and the fact that there was no Sunday roast on menu. That may only now be on offer at lunchtime I dont know. This has always been our favourite here as we ate here a lot and continued through covid with takeaway Sunday roast . Personally, I found the altered menu not very varied for us but that is personal choice. Changing times call for challenging decisions in hospitality. We ordered haddock and peppered chicken stack. Firstly the haddock had obviously been defrosted and thrown into cook. It looked ok until you cut through batter only to find fish very wet inside which soaked through to underside of batter leaving it soggy. Although edible it was very wet with water on plate not juices of fish. Add to this a portion of hand cooked chips which were underdone and a small spoonful of tinned peas. Not forgetting the lovely tartare sauce (best bit of it) and a dried up piece of lemon. Moving on to peppers chicken. A lot of lukewarm mad with a breast of chicken escalope slightly overdone (brown) on outside and dry on inside. A handful of fried onions certainly not crispy. Whilst edible it was bland. No one asked if food was ok at any stage. Add to that kitchen staff out talking to people at bar whilst obviously not busy. Food was edible only just so didn't warrant a complaint as such. Used to love this place as on our doorstep but won't be rushing back. In current climes one would think it would be a good idea to improve customer expectation with better cooked food, better service and a thank you on payment. Maybe you also need to update the cocktail prices on your website also. All in all a poor experience

Quickest meal in history!!! Table booked for 7.15pm meal ordered by 7.30pm. At just after 8.30pm the music was turned off and bill placed on table. If I'd wanted fast-food and service i would have gone to McDonald's, no wonder the place was dead!!! If I'd known place closed so early i would have gone elsewhere, won't be back.

Lovely meal here really enjoyed it .lots of nice dishes to choose from .

Got a burger was burnt and tasted real bad and the chips were greasy an just didn’t taste good probably due to old oil in the fryer would not recommend, and the waiting staff had the same personality as a fence post really bad experience not be near the place again

Great food and service was excellent. The staff were so friendly and accomodating. Only issue for me is that there were only 2 gluten free options on menu Dogs are allowed but only at the outside seating area
