The best sushi restaurant around, it was named Derby’s hidden secret, also one of the best outside of London in the Times! I’ve been coming for years and it’s just as good now as it always has been. Unassuming from the outside but with great food, a welcoming service and an amazing sushi chef with his many many years of experience who came over from Japan when the restaurant opened.

Amazing little Japanese restaurant in the most humble, unremarkable setting. I think it has all the more character given how profoundly unlikely it seems - I mean, it's about as far from the coast as you can get, yet the seafood is fresh and amazing; it's in one of the most unassumingly non-Oriental cities in the UK, yet when you walk in you're greeted by staff who wouldn't seem out of place in a Tokyo izakaya. I'm told it was set up by (and its chef imported by) Toyota, which has a very large facility in Derby, when their senior staff were unable to find decent Japanese food anywhere nearby. Well -- it's absolutely smashed that problem. It's good value for what it is, but if you're happy with supermarket lunch sushi, or even chain stuff like yo sushi, it will feel very pricey. Wonderful food, lovely staff, hilariously unlikely setting. Don't miss it!

Authentic and consistently scrumptious Japanese food whatever one orders.Exceptionally talented chef. A unique not to be missed experience. We haven't been in Derby since 2019. I first ate here in 2015 and this restaurant is my must Thanks visit on every trip. Last night was no exception. We ordered 14 dishes th for 4 of us and all of it was gobbled down with gusto and gratitude, washed down with hot sake. Each of the dishes was ultra fresh and arrived piping hot, (of course not the sashimi and sushi). I highly recommend this little restaurant to anyone who is an aficionado of real Japanese food. Many thanks to the chef and the lovely lady who served us. We had a glorious time

We attended as a special treat with my son & daughter as they both love Sushi (as do I)… With a carpark straight opposite, we were initially a little concerned about the lack of signage… but upon entering we’re greeted in a friendly manner and noticed the restaurant was 3/4 full with plenty of Asian customers. The sushi bar was stocked with lots of fresh fish and Mr Ebi working away with great care and skill…. We had the deluxe platter, some gyoza, hot sake and WOW it was great… really generous slabs of fresh fish, and some quirky ones including tuna belly, oyster, mackerel… all amazing! A little more expensive than a Yo Sushi! But a world apart in terms of taste, freshness, variety, portion size! Definitely go go go here if you like sushi, want an authentic treat and to be amazed with flavours!

I had the sashimi platter; Scallop, sea bream, salmon belly, flounder, tuna belly and simple tuna loin, and yellowtail. Everything was just as you would have found it served in a high quality restaurant in Tokyo. Absolutely superb food preparation and serving. Arigato Gozaimasu. Oishikata desu.

But today when I tried to make a reservation the lady who answered the phone was not very welcoming, I don't know if she was in a bad mood. The fish tasted fresh and looked sharp. Service was attentive. The only cons would be that some of the dishes are slightly expensive but cost are high for products at the moment and everyone’s got to make a living and like I say they quality’s there. My partner has lived in Derby for many years and was surprised when I told him that I'd found this recommended restaurant on TripAdvisor. We visited on a Tuesday evening - it wasn't too busy, which may have been the result of the heatwave at the time. As other reviews have said, it's unassuming on the outside and inside, but you're here for the food. We tried the deluxe sushi platter, assorted tempura, yakitori and gyoza. All were fresh and tasty, and reminded me of being in Japan. Other diners appeared to be regulars and knew exactly what favourites they wanted to order. We look forward to returning and trying more of the menu. Recommended.

It's an a pretty unprepossing neighbourhood and not much to look at from the outside - but don't be put off. Easy parking in the pay and display right outside. A simple interior, but reminiscent of these kinds of places in Japan. Excellent service. The boss is hard at work at the counter making sushi - which is the main event. I've only ever had sushi this good in Japan. It's more expensive than the chains and when you eat it you will see why, and that it's actually superb value. The other dishes are just as good - we tried the tempura and teriyaki. The clientele are clearly people in the know which explains the minimal online presence for Ebi Sushi as there is no need for it.

Most the reviews online for this place are incredible and I always said when I was in the area that I wanted to visit Ebi Sushi. I have eaten in hundreds of sushi restaurants around the world and I was really very impressed with the food at Ebi sushi. If I was judging just the food I would without a doubt have given it 5 stars however the terrible service let it down for me. It’s a small restaurant but was completely fully booked on a Saturday night. Their were 2 waitresses and one sushi chef catering for everyone. We waited 45 minutes for our sushi and then another 45 minutes for our mains. It was really hard to get hold of a waitress and the staff just seemed to have no urgency they were walking round like snails. Bad service is very frustrating and often a reason not to go again But the food really was outstanding and I see what the fuss is about. I would really recommend their sashimi and the vegetable tempura although everything was so delicious. Would I go again? Because the food was so outstanding I would probably give it one more go. However if the service as bad the second time that would be my final time.

It is slightly on the higher end of prices for Derby, but if you can treat yourself, I highly recommend it. I know that this kind of meal in London would have costs three times as much for the exact same dishes. I also love the authentic Japanese feel that you get from the restaurant. I believe that the term for a sushi master is ‘Itamae’ and this is definitely what the gentleman in Ebi Sushi is. Finally, the service is excellent due to the size of the restaurant, extremely attentive and received all our drinks and meals in good timing.

After having it on my “To Do” list for what seems like forever, I finally made it to Ebi Sushi last night. For the uninitiated; the restaurant was originally conceived to give workers at the nearby Toyota factory, their families and clients a taste of home. To enter the unassuming facade, through the bead curtain, is to be immediately transported 6000 miles to Japan. The specials board, the TV, the chatter around the room are all Japanese. You can scarcely believe that you’re still in the English East Midlands and it’s wonderful. The sushi and sashimi is prepared by the Itamae (highly trained Japanese chef) at the counter in the corner. You can marvel at his knife skills and dexterity as he prepares maki and nigiri and lavish platters of precisely sliced sashimi. Everything I ate had the same clean, fresh, precise flavours and seasoning that you could expect in high-end restaurants in Tokyo. Ebi is unapologetically Japanese. Few concessions are made to Englishness and the place is all the better for it. For some, it could be a little intimidating at first (especially if you’ve never visited Japan and don’t speak or read Japanese). However, the longer you stay, soaking up the feel of it (and your sake), eating delicious sushi, the more you start to love it. It’s certainly not cheap, but the quality of the fish and its expert preparation more than justify the price. It’s certainly a lot cheaper (and much quicker) than a plane ride to Kyoto.Ebi Sushi is a hidden diamond in the generally sparse rough of Derby’s culinary scene. It’s also a place (along with Tapas bar Lorentes on Friar Gate) that transports you to another world in a truly authentic way.I’ll definitely be back.Kanpai! Domo arigato gozaimasu.

Having tasted sushi and tempura in Japan we couldn't believe to have an exact replica on our door steps, including the spectacle of the chef preparing the dishes, areal treat. The service was so friendly and efficient with explanation about the varieties of fish and how to eat them. The oyster was incredibly fresh, the tempura so light and all the fish so well cooked. We'll be back soon to eat the luxury sushi dish as it looked so appetizing

Not been for a couple of years, nothing’s changed, all the better for it! 4 adults and 4 children, sushi, tempura, sashimi (9 fresh fish in platter) all excellent. One sitting so no racing you through. Very enjoyable

Wow. I’d highly suggest this restaurant to everyone! The fish is extremely fresh at Ebi Sushi! The service is absolutely amazing. I’ve had sushi in London, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Barcelona, so I think I’m more than qualified to give them a five star rating. I’d suggest ordering the salmon and tuna nigiri. Also, the hand rolls were lovely.

Every time we visit Derby we so look forward to eating here. You'd miss this place if you didn't know it existed. Plain decor and patronised by a lot of Japanese people, (Toyota Car factory is in Derby). We've been eating here for the last 5 years and the food is consistently, utterly delicious. One can see that the chef is totally dedicated to his craft/art. It's his vocation. he is in plain sight and meticulous. I think he once worked at Nobu. I prefer the food here. Sake is less expensive and service is superb, albeit slow. We order sake and drink and talk and laugh and the dishes come out 2 or 3 at a time so that one can enjoy a leisurely dinner. We were 4 of us and we ordered and ate all of 16 dishes, everyone of which was worth swooning over. The fish and seafood is fresher and better quality than we've ever eaten. Oysters were on the day's specials and they were enormous, plump and sweet. Age dashi tofu is a must for vegetarians, the dashi is yummy. The service was faultless and they are flexible too. For example we ordered yakitori (3 pieces in a dish) but as we were 4 on our table, she said she'd add an extra skewer to save us ordering 2 dishes.the bill was £206 not including service but including 4 large carafes of sake, very good value considering the feast. Highly recommended.

The sushi were great but we were disappointed that the portion was small and it was quite expensive too. There is a cheap council car park just in front of the restaurant. Nice atmosphere.
