We are always impressed. by the wonderful food, wine & service here. The food was exquisite on our most recent visit. The portions are perfect so you can enjoy all the beautiful extras... a gorgeous billini with beetroot & horseradish.... Perfectly sea salted thin bread stick... the just sharp enough grapefruit jellies & melt in the mouth caramels with coffee at the end of your meal. The menu changes so no guarantees however we loved the mackerel & the blood orange starters, the monkfish & pork mains & what can I day about the desserts... I ate my chocolate torte & most of my husband's financier too! I| wanted to try the ginger cake so much I am going to pop in for coffee & cake one morning too which is something I can highly recommend.... A really lovely place to meet with friends for a cupa & a good chat. The staff are all excellent here. We asked for s recommendation for a wine that would compliment our food & the suggested pinot noir was sublime, matching both the starters & mains perfectly. Al in all I would highly recommend that you make a point of visiting for coffee & cake, brunch, lunch or dinner & book to make sure you do not miss out!

Very good restaurant, service was efficient, discreet and genuine. The menu was very well thought out, good flavour and texture combinations and dishes were attractively presented. We ate venison for main which is easy to get wrong but it was meltingly tender and beautifully flavoursome as well as being a satisfying size including a tiny venison pasty and perfect dauphinoise potatoes, only the jus let it down, far too sticky and it had set solid by the end of the meal.Starter of a squash tartlet was equally impressive.Home made bread and parmesan breadsticks along with a canape were served between courses which were all equally delicious. The wide ranging wine list was excellent with some of the cheaper choices available in half litres, great idea for those who maybe want a mix of red and white.Good table layout with enough space to avoid intruding on other diners. While not overly formal, the overall level of professionalism here meets the expectations of those wanting a quality dining experience.

This restaurant leaves nothing to be desired from start to finish everything was done as it should be polite and efficient staff, taste and textures and presentation of the food second to none. Native oysters to start with a Partridge escabeche, spiced poached pears braised Puy lentils followed by haunch of venison just rounded off the afternoon perfectly. A well presented menu with variations of many dishes. Will be returning within very near future.

We booked a table here before coming to Whitstable, based on the good reviews on Trip. We were therefore a bit concerned when we saw the location, basically a parade of shops in Tankerton. Restaurants in the centre of Whitstable look so much more appealing. But Trip's advice was spot on. The food here was superb, the freshest fish we have had in a long time, interesting and varied menu, and great service even on a busy Saturday night. Oh, and the prices were quite reasonable as well. By comparison, the prices in the restaurants in the centre of Whitstable looked pretty steep.

Our friends had been raving about East Coast Dining Room and so I had been looking forward to our visit. It didn't disappoint. It's certainly not everyday food - dishes are rich, complex and well executed. Imaginative and unusual veggie dishes which gets the thumbs up from me. There is an ambience here. The room is plain - grey and white, with lots of pictures - very tasteful The tables are clad in pristine white cloths with similar crisp napkins. First a wooden board with sourdough and wonderful long biscuits appear with oil and butter, accompanied by a carafe of water with cucumber which is deliciously refreshing. I hate lemon water that most pubs provide. The table d'hote menu has three starters, three main courses and three puddings. You can have two or three courses. The service is discreet. The food is gorgeous. It is a good price too. Highly recommended.

Once again Supper Club last night was excellent. The downside is that it is now so popular you have to book well in advance or risk disappointment! The food was, as always, very full of flavour. For me the standout dish was dessert. Ryan's crab sorbet was a real taste experience. That man is miracle worker with whatever ingredients he uses. This sorbet was up there with his elderflower jelly that we had back in the Summer. How about coming out of the kitchen one Supper Club night and take a bow.

Friends and family often recommend pubs and restaurants during our gatherings throughout the year when they recount their own visits to various establishments from the weeks and months previous, painting pictures of beautiful décor, friendly service and outstanding food and drink – and the prices wern’t bad either! However, we listened to no one and headed on a train down to Whitstable for the day on a sunny Saturday. I did have a look “look up” to see what was around and knowing that Whitstable itself is often too busy and can be over-priced for what it is we strolled along to Tankerton after a beer. In contrast to the noise and hustle of Whitstable Tankerton is the sleepy Grandad just taking in the lovely views and breathing in the fresh sea air....with a nice pint of ale within easy reach.Walking along the open sea front road Marine Parade you can see why some may just pass through or reverse out within 50 yards of entering. There just isn’t much going on. A pub, a hotel and many lovely sea front homes with gorgeous views. However, head inland and join the main street just one back and this is where the action is. We’re not talking Whitstable action of packed bars, cafe’s and throngs of bearded hipster types but there’s certainly a healthy pulse.Although we’d booked ahead that wasn’t required on this visit but as is often the case, had we not booked we wouldn’t have got table. We were greeted by the friendly and very personable Nick who offered us a choice of vacant tables to choose from. We opted for a window table so that we could still see some of the rare summer sunshine that was on offer and was soon tucking into the lovely fresh onion bread and bread sticks that were brought over. The weekend menu we were given had around 6 starters and 7-8 mains and all read lovely. There are also oysters available for £3 a pair or £8 for 6 and the starters ranged from £6.50 to £9 and mains from around £16 to £20. Wines and fizz are from around £18-20 upwards with some served by the glass.I opted for the poached eggs and chrorizo whilst my partner had the nectarine and goats curd salad. Although the new potatoes with my dish were slightly undercooked the eggs were perfect and the favours were a sensation together. The nectarine salad although starting off like a dessert soon came back to savoury starter with held from the goats curd and was deemed “delicious”. Washed down by a very lovely Albarino things were so far so very good. The restaurant itself is very smart but without making you feel like you can’t relax. White and grey walls with modern paintings and quality linen on the tables give a great comfortable, light and airy feel. The music added to the atmosphere and was 1) The right kind of music and 2) at the right kind of level. Top marks there. Both mains were also very good indeed. The baked cod with deep fried squid was perfectly cooked and my mullet with lobster and corn tart was one of the best fish dishes i’ve had in the past year or so. Both were beautifully presented but it certainly wasn’t all looks. What was also great to see was good portion sizes – no need for a side order of chips to help fill you up at this place. These left us with room for just one dessert between us, much to my disappointment. Sadly I wouldn’t have done either a dessert or the cheese any justice in ordering it so opted to share the other halfs choice. And boy did she choose well! Ginger financier with lime butterscotch and salted caramel ice cream. My two (small) spoonfuls were delicious and my partner declared it one of the best she had ever had. And at £7 for any of the desserts and £8 for a section of three cheeses the finishers are also well priced. Sadly after 90 minutes or so it was over. We couldn’t eat any more, we had to leave. £83 ex. service and more than enough food and wine to send us on our merry way. We will hopefully be back and next time may try an evening. In the meantime i will look forward to recommending the East Coast Dining Room to friends and family for weeks and months to come.

Had another great meal here on Saturday night. Different front of house staff to when we went last time, but still just as friendly and attentive. I struggled to choose what to have, as it all sounded so nice, but I was really pleased with my choice of Cauliflower Soup with Black Truffle and a little toastie on the side with Taleggio and Pear, followed by Rack of Lamb which came with Pommes Anna, a little crumbed bonbon made from the shoulder, and devilled kidneys. We squeezed dessert in as well (Ginger and Pear Parkin with Salted Treacle Ice cream for me, Panna Cotta for her), and I'm glad we did. The food strikes the perfect balance for me - not showy for the sake of it, but special in a confident and unpretentious way. And no roof tiles for plates! Tankerton was a bit lively on Saturday, swarming with teenage lads going to the fair on the front with crates of beer, but The East Coast Dining Room was a friendly little oasis. I noticed that everyone else in the restaurant was having as good a time as we were. Keep it up!

It takes a rare skill to get the combination right: friendly, polite, classy service; superbly selected dishes with great combinations of ingredients; and then the execution of those dishes. East Coast Dining Room has got it right. I might notch down the best of Frank Sinatra playing in the background, but that's a personal thing. The evening was perfect: oysters and accompaniments were exceptional, like a mouthful of the sea. Delicious blinis and pea soup as amuse bouches. Mains of cod, lamb, pork, mullet all superb, 5-6 components on each plate but nothing out of place. Braised lettuce, pickled courgette, romanesco sauce, chorizo chutney, tempura squid all extra little accents on perfect plates. Desserts of brownie, cheese, strawberry cheesecake and financier (cake...the most incredible cake), again with little twists and accents, such as coconut parfait with the brownie, toasted hazelnut crumb with the cheesecake. And to finish, wonderful petits fours - little chocolate fudges and wonderfully zingy citrus jellies. And all accompanied by a local Kent rose which was light and summery. A great night.

My fellow diner asked me not to review this restaurant:"Please don't you might make it too busy"But I am compelled to do so.If we can't book a table next time we want one then I'll have to eat more than the best meal out that I've eaten since I moved to Kent in 1976! I wasn't surprised to learn that the current manager (Nick) used to work at my former favorite restaurant in Canterbury. At first glance at the menu I thought - a little pricey. However you get so much more than you expect and I will not spoil it for you.The design and layout of the interior is so clever that I will have to emulate it, next time I design a restaurant. You don't appreciate this until you sit down. You won't appreciate it if you don't go!On studying the menu the main meals look complex but every element of my meal complemented another and as my perfectly cooked rack of lamb melted in my mouth the price pales into insignificance. Our waitress (Kiwi - don't make the mistake I made by guessing South African) was humble and attentive. The chef would not desert his/her kitchen to receive my compliments, in person.Could this be the 'Stig' of fine dining. Please just treat yourself. (But not when I need a table)The Eco Hippy

We've been eating out in Whitstable for 10 years. There's always been a mixture of good, ok and below average restaurants, chains and touristy traps that charge too much but don't live up to it. East Coast Dining Room rates as my absolute favourite for food. I've never had a bad meal here. My mother who's run her own restaurants and has always been super critical to eat out with has always raved about the food here which is not something she does often. The menu is diverse, local, sophisticated and is carried off with skill and style. Situated on Tankerton High Street, it's away from the busyness of the town, and there's plenty in this area to enjoy including a boutique microbrewery and Henry's wine shop where you can have an aperitif and pick up some excellent wine to go.

Came across this by accident but we had a memorable dinner, and excellent value. It is very very close to being one of the best. There are a few things they could do slightly better, all very achievable and this will be a great restaurant. The cooking is ambitious and the standard is very high so it's a great addition to the north Kent scene. Which seems to be going from strength to strength. Since this place opened a few years ago I have visited quite a few times and while always enjoyable something always seemed lacking. The main issue seemed to be an overambitious menu that sounded great but actually lacked pizzazz and cohesion.Service has always been excellent, maybe the best in the area. The wine list, although expensive is very extensive and the atmosphere is both intimate and relaxing. The last couple of visits have shown a much improved menu with more successful flavour combinations and contrasts.Calamari starter and pork tenderloin main stand out as exceptional, well balanced and brilliantly executed. My main criticism is the overarching sweetness in the menu at the expense of zest and seasoning. That's a totally personal view and I still rank this as probably the best modern british restaurant in the area given the sad demise of both The Oxford in whitstable and the ruination of The Oyster & Chop house in Herne Bay.

The food was excellent, a chicken pate with warm peaches was a lovely combination. The main courses (we both had fish - sea bass and mullet) were cooked perfectly. So we are regular visitors to this place and definitely part of the close fan base, yet I still feel it is worth making you all aware in particular of the special thing that is Sunday lunch. It is a little known fact that East Coast Dining room is open for Sunday lunch and that it serves up a special roast dinner for that occasion as only they know how to do. The chef's expertise gives a special touch to the gravy, the roast potatoes and in our case the mint-sauce that complimented the beautifully cooked lamb, that I defy you to get better elsewhere. Even if you have been here before and enjoyed their menu (which changes regularly by the way), I recommend you make a special visit on a Sunday afternoon. You will not regret it.

The menu gave us an interesting and diverse choice suggesting well-sourced local ingredients - certainly enough there to make us consider returning. Our fish was beautifully cooked and this is no mean feat as too often it is just slightly over and rather tired. Some of the accompaniments on the plate did not quite work to complement the dish as a whole and the seasoning was a little flat. It would help if there was salt and pepper on the table as we are all grown up now and can choose to add this as and when we want!

We've been to the East Coast Dining Room a handful of times over the last few years, and it's never let us down. We hadn't been since last February though, so thought a visit was overdue. It was our best meal here yet. The food was excellent throughout, and the little touches like the bread selection, amuse-bouches of Gruyere and Chive doughnuts, and petit fours add that little touch of class. But the main reason it's such an enjoyable restaurant to visit is the effortlessly friendly and attentive service. It seems like a small thing, but we were given a carafe of tap water (nicely flavoured with cucumber) as soon as we sat down, and this was constantly re-filled without us once having to ask. Similarly we weren't left hanging around waving our card in desperation to actually pay the bill and leave, as is so often the case in restaurants. The staff were all exceptionally friendly and chatty, not so much that we felt constantly interrupted, but in a genuinely welcoming and interested way. It makes you want to re-book immediately, and bring your friends. The exterior is now nicely decked out with lights and tables, so it'll be nice to visit in the summer I'd have thought. Thumbs up.

Short but excellent wine list.Wxcellent home made breads and cheese sticks kicked of a real treat. The table was soon full of fantastic local oysters and fish dishes, meat and delicious deserts that would have been at home in some of the top (London) West End restaurants. My family and I had a wonderful visit on a Saturday evening. The staff were friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. The menu was very interesting with dishes we all wanted to try, it made choosing quite difficult - which is a good problem to have! Three of us had oysters which were absolutely delicious, so fresh, clean and pure - among the best we'd all had. We then each had a different starter, main and pudding and all were excellent. Beautiful presentation, sublime flavours and textures. The sort of dishes where you want to savour every mouthful and not rush. The pudding wines are not to be missed either! Well thought out extra touches were a delicious cheese and tomato tartlet as an amuse bouche, homemade breads and petite fours. Our water jug with added cucumber (very refreshing - will have at home!) was constantly kept topped up. The chef and his team certainly know what they are doing. Excellent English food of a very high standard in calm contemporary surroundings. We will return with some of our other family next time, they already want to visit!

This bright clean and welcoming venue is a tret. The lunch menue of two or three courses is too tempting to not have all three. Great Food, Wines, Bottled Beers etc. Great service. Highly recomended.

We had booked a table for two for a birthday lunch and we were not disappointed. The waiter was friendly and attentive. The food was beautifully presented and flavoursome. We enjoyed the parsnip and coconut soup with onion bhajis and the stilton souffle with celery and grape salad. The added touch was the homemade bread and breadsticks served with olive oil and sea salt. We liked the simplicity of the white linen tablecloths and napkins. We will be recommending this restaurant to our friends and we will definitely be returning.

This restaurant ticked most of the boxes. Welcoming twinkling fairy lights, an even warmer welcome by the staff, pristine white linen table cloths, and a great ambience. Everything you could ask for. The service was exceptional, and the muse Bouche and breads etc a great touch. However, we really wanted to say the food matched this, but although it was beautifully presented it just wasn't quite there. My mackerel starter, looked the part, but didn't quite deliver on taste. The liver in the liver and bacon main, was too thick and sinewy, and the twice cooked Stilton soufflé was a let down as the cheese just didn't seem to have the required strength. Having said this we still had an enjoyable evening, Good reasonable wine list.

Lunch here last Sunday which was a delightfully refreshing surprise for the taste buds! The unassuming exterior hides a bright welcoming interior and the equally bright welcoming staff were an encouraging start which was then echoed in the food.Though a Sunday (& only 2 of us) we were able to choose from the a la carte , the Sunday fixed and the special of the day as the variety across all menus was very enticing. From the warm bread and herb-flavoured homemade bread sticks brightly presented with a delicious olive oil and pleasingly fresh salt, to the light crisp skin of the fresh sea bream & equally crispy kale it was clear the chef & kitchen highlight care, craft & flavour across every component of each course either in the individual tastes or in harmony where intended. After succulent sweet rock oysters, the cod beignets & squid ink mayonnaise were a smooth subtle delight & the Sea Bream flesh so fresh, moist & flavourful with prawn & sweet potato cake a pleasant diversion. Roast duck was perfectly pink & soft with beautifully textured vegetables. Dessert was a shared Chocolate & Orange torte, rich & deep with a tangy orange presence. We wanted to delve into so many of the dishes on offer - for me a tasting menu or trio of desserts would have been perfect ! A place to remember and come back to - definitely recommended if you appreciate excellent food where what may appear complicated elsewhere is done naturally & simply with no fuss.

I would have to rate this restaurant certainly in the top ten restaurants of East Kent. The food presentation just added to the wonderful flavours and the freshness of the food - no plastic bags here. Our party sampled both the fish and meat and as there was 11 of us we were able to see the really high quality across the menu. I would recommend this restaurant as not overly expensive for the fine dining we experienced. The staff were very friendly and able to take on everyones expectations for an excellent meal. Ryan the chef and his team are to be congratulated, keeping what you all do its lovely to have such a good restaurant in our area.

We found the East Coast Dining Room very close to our hotel and checked their website to ensure we would have a nice selection to choose from. The menu is not huge but we had no problem deciding on our meals. The tasters were just that - tasty ! Each of the dishes we were presented with were flavoursome with good colour and textures. Sadly we might never visit again as this one visit to Kent was for a very specific reason. But we can highly recommend the 'Dining Room' to any one who cares to read my report. Not overly expensive but well worth every penny ! Well done team.

That is good news for her and all that eat at ECDR.Innovative dishes served in style. Ryan`s soups are as good as they get.I have wide experience of restaurants and eateries in East Kent. This really is a great place to eat (and they now have a fab mini deli too where you can pick-up their wonderful homemade ice cream). On this visit we were here for their great value lunch. Smoked haddock croquettes for one of us and a pickled beetroot, walnut and goats cheese salad for the other as starters followed by hake and a pork tenderloin with black pudding, apples and creamed potato. The standard of cooking is excellent - we also had homemade bread and wafers as nibbles - and the service brilliant. Wine by the glass is good value too with some nice options on offer. We will definitely come again.

My first impression when I arrived, was not great, I couldn't decide from the decor what type of food it would be, it looked really bland, however my opinions changed dramatically. The food was fabulous . Our waiter was brillant and took time to explain all the dishes. There were 4 of us, so between us we tried most of them, all fantastic. Wine choice was good and really affordable , I don't think there was a bottle above £25, which is fantastic. I just wished I lived closer so that I could visit more often, highly recommend

Indian Summer was the theme of the menu for Sptember's Supper Club at the East Coast Dining Room. So we had bhaghi etc starters, and a choice of a curried fish or chicken for our mains, before finishing off with a tropical dessert. The main courses were delicately flavoured, perhaps overly so for me, but then my palate is chilli hardened. But they seemed to go down well with the capacity crowd of fellow diners. As always, the service was friendly and attentive, without being obtrusive. We hope to be there again this week for the October supper club.

Lunch with fab friends on a Sunday! This is by far my favourite local restaurant. Champagne by the glass for me and the house special Negroni for my husband, followed by one of the amazing wines on offer - cleverly laid out on the wine list so that you can choose your price range e.g. push the boat out, or go completely overboard! On this occasion I chose a cod starter followed by roast duck breast with plums - yummy! Because my favourite food (secretly) is all things delivered on bread, I'm always too full for pudding as I cannot forgo the house breadboard on arrival! But, my husband had a fabulous blackberry homemade ice cream and baked apple desert. Finished off with a red pudding wine! The owners are so friendly and welcoming as are all the staff - especially Rob who somehow manages to smile when I do my usual 'could I have this instead of this' (yes I'm one of those). We will be back soon!

It was after 8pm on a bank holiday Sunday and we were struggling to find an establishment still open for dining. Thankfully the lovely people at East Coast Dining Room welcomed us and we opted to sit outside in the cool evening air. We started with Prosecco and Elderflower cocktails and half a dozen delicious oysters. I decided on seared scallops to start, served with cauliflower purée and pickled grapes. They were so good that I was reluctant to share with my partner (it's our thing, we share) and I even refused a taste of his starter. He decided on a sirloin to start, slow roasted with a radish and tomato salad and served with a mustard cream. In a word, he described it as awesome. For our main course, I decided on pork tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto, served with aubergine purée, roast peppers and courgettes and presented on a Parmesan polenta. It was very tasty and the tenderloin was very tender and juicy indeed. I especially liked the aubergine purée. My partner chose the lemon sole, pan fried with scallop roe and seaweed butter and served with spinach and sautéed potatoes. I had a little taste and it was fantastic. All in all, the service was superb and our meal practically perfect. We will definitely return.

We made excellent choices of cod loin and calves liver for our mains, the food and service was spot on and could not be faulted. For puddings we chose the cheese platter, it was not massive, but was more than sufficient, the cheese was delivered at room temperature so full of flavour. We would return to this restaurant at any time we are next in the area.Highly recommended

Great friendly service, lovely food that was clearly fresh and locally sourced. Nice welcome. Jug of tap water provided, good priced wine list. Food was excellent, right sized portions, lovely bread and butter. Fish and shellfish,(this is by the seaside), were beautifully presented and tasty. Wine suitably chilled and desserts also great. Definitely worth a visit. 3 course each and a bottles of wine £80 good value in my book.

Six of us visited the East Coast Dining Room on the 1st Saturday of the Whitstable oyster festival and booked this restaurant because of the good reviews. We were not disappointed! I'm glad we booked because the place was packed. The staff were great; attentive but not intrusive. We liked the fact that we were offered tap water. The amuse-bouche that arrived with our drinks was a nice touch, as was the platter of fresh bread and cheesy straws (both home made). The dipping oil served with the bread was the best I've ever tasted and my friend and I each bought a bottle to take home. The food was inventive and absolutely delicious. The portions were large and none of us had room for dessert. It worked out at about £50 per head which, considering the amount of wine we had (4 bottles I think) we thought was very good value considering the quality of both the food and the wine.
