Durham Ox in Hambleton

We have stayed and eaten her before and it was excellent. This meal was not the best experience. The younger waitressing staff are lovely and really work hard but the older staff-seem uninterested. The food is good. They choose good simple food steak /prawns/scallops and cook them well ( although i could have played tennis with the prawns on my seafood platter they were so rubbery and my caramel sauce tasted burnt ) but quality doesn’t warrant the hefty charge. I am confident if i’d raised any issue -prawns or sauce they would have corrected them. I am more than happy to pay the high prices-but I expect the food and service to match the price.

Fabulous two night break staying in spacious and creatively decorated rooms at the back of the pub. Lovely cosy, separate sitting area and charming extras on hospitality tray including Durham Ox ground coffee and biscuits. Dinner is superb and everything is of a high quality. Portions are generous! Great breakfast especially the Eggs Royale. Lovely ambience throughout.

Spent one night at the Ox on their Supper Club offer. The room is free and you have a generous allowance towards food and drink which we struggled to spend to be honest. We upgraded to the Studio room which was extremely comfortable and had a double aspect view. The food is very good and seemed great value to me. Lots of tempting blackboard specials as well! They have a wide range of wines including some nice surprises. About the best thing is the ambiance in the wood panelled restaurant which is fabulous. On a winters night there's no better place to be. Good breakfast in the morning and then off to walk the woods near Ampleforth and then pick up some herb fed chicken in Easingwold. A great little trip!

We have visited the Ox a number of times for Sunday lunch which is always very good. But as we had a special birthday to celebrate we took advantage of their supper club offer which includes bed and breakfast. What a great decision. The staff were really good and made us feel very welcome. The food was first class and that includes the breakfast. Could not fault anything and the supper club deal is fantastic value. Well done the Ox.

Stayed in the newly launched Pool Cabin - the first guests to spend the night and what an amazing addition to the Durham Ox this is! Completely private space with a spa pool (generously sized) with your own private terraced area, fenced off for complete privacy and a lovely pond, plus the most fantastic views. That's all before you get inside - the outside/inside area as you enter with log burning stove is a great extra space - lovely on a Saturday afternoon to sit and relax. And then to the main cabin - cosy, a little quirky and with everything you could need already there for you - nothing has been forgotten - including ice cream! Having the 1.5 bathrooms is a genius idea especially when you're getting ready to go to the pub for dinner! Which, was also outstanding - the starter of Whitby Crab was delicious! A fantastic stay! Highly recommend!

Stopped for a late lunch after reading very good reviews of the Durham ox. My goodness, true to the reviews, the food was really delicious. We enjoyed a tomahawk pork chop, with mustard mash , veg etc. It was cooked to perfection! Thankyou. We are returning to the area in August, and booked for Sunday lunch.. great place, and credit goes to the staff as well, what an asset to the Durham ox.

We booked a midweek single night here with breakfast before a funeral next day. I am a very restless sleeper so we chose the 2 bedroom cottage with sitting room (Rose). The bedrooms were full of olde worlde charm but the beds were excellent. Watch the low beams in the twin! Huge, well equipped bathroom (downstairs) and comfy sitting area plus the added bonus of a sort of kitchen with fridge. Thoughtful touches like toiletries, proper milk and real ground coffee for the caffetiere set this apart from other placed we have stayed. Breakfast was included and while not the range of bigger places in the continental selection, the cooked breakfasts were the most interesting i have been offered. I opted for the healthy breakfast-poached eggs, tomato, mushroom and an absolutely delicious smashed avocado thing. Cooked to perfection. The advance reservation for dinner wasn't really needed as the restaurant and bar was quiet that night, but it is a good idea in busier periods. The food was well presented and cooked, staff helpful and prices very fair for what we had. Just a couple of minor niggles. Hanging space for clothes is on the tiny landing and quite limited if there were 4 of you staying more than one night. Too many cushions on the beds (a pet peeve of mine-they look great but get thrown on the floor whan you sleep). The "kitchen" was equipped with mugs and glasses, a fridge and a wine cooler. A microwave and some plates, knives and forks would give more options to overnighters and longer stayers. All in all, this was a great place to stay and i am really pleased we opted for it. Would love to stay longer under different circumstances.

A lovely pub and restaurant with a great atmosphere. Warm and friendly staff. The steak was great, abeit pricey. £37 for a 10oz ribeye. Onion rings £4.50 a portion. We also stayed over in the 'blue' room. Very nice. Breakfast was lovely. Would definitely recommend the food and the accomodation. One thing to watch out for. The service charge thats added. You dont have to pay it so why add it in the first place I ask myself. I got them to remove it and left a tip that I wanted to leave.

Excellent ambience from the onset. Lovely village gastro pub with accommodation. This time was a special treat so we stayed in the new Villa lodge with a hot tub for the ‘Sunday supper club’ We had a Fabulous lunch and absolutely excellent evening meal, every meal coming out of the kitchen looked amazing and very well presented, they were very busy so well done chefs… 👏🏼👏🏼 All Staff were very friendly and on the ball cleaning tables etc as soon as people had left them. All in all a great special night away.

We had a family stay in the Durham Ox this weekend for a birthday celebration. We stayed in three of the rooms Blue Room, Field Room and the Studio, all were extremely clean, comfortable and attractively presented with tea/coffee facilities and bottled water. The food was excellent and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. A special thank you to Adam. We have visited the Durham Ox many times over the last 30 years and believe it is at its best!

We first came here over 18 years ago and only returned in late 2022. It was so good we went back again recently and found it just as good. From the moment we arrived the staff were welcoming and helpful, and this extended to the team running the restaurant that night. Highly efficient and every tasty course arrived after a respectable and brief interval. From bar to waiting staff everyone was friendly and we enjoyed talking to them all. The phrase gastro pub usually refers to a more upmarket kind of establishment than many, and although The Durham Ox is in this category in terms of food it edges itself into a more 'fine dining' experience. The menu isn't extensive but what's on it is all excellent. A carefully selected wine list covered most food orientated areas. Our starters of a salmon trio on one hand and salt and pepper squid on another were spot on. Mains of chicken for my wife and fillet steak for myself were cooked to perfection with a glorious square of richly flavoured potato dauphinoise and bright green veg on the side. Absolutely delicious and beautifully cooked. We somehow squeezed in a chocolate brownie for dessert which was about as good as that kind of pudding is. A crunchy exterior with a sumptuously thick chocolate interior made this a spectacular way to end our dinner. A full English breakfast next morning set us off very well for the day ahead and we left thoroughly satisfied. The room we had just over a year ago was luxurious, and on our recent visit we were in a different suite which was just as nice. A super comfortable bed, beautifully appointed bathroom and everything was just right. In terms of what we wanted from out night away we genuinely couldn't fault anything. The key to getting places like this right is employing the right people and delivering food that's as good as it claims to be. The Durham Ox obviously uses meticulously selected local suppliers for its ingredients, all of which tasted superb, but they've obviously got an excellent kitchen team to prepare it all too. Definitely an experience we'll repeat!

Started with a rude bartender who got our table wrong. Food very expensive for the portion size and the halibut was over cooked with very salty bisque. The rosti was just a circle of slimy potatoes and onion, Had to ask twice times for a water and asked for more bread which never arrived. Cutlery was placed on the table by the prongs of the fork. Pestered every 5 minutes if the food was ok and lectured on the burning point of milk when requesting a hot coffee which was undrinkable on arrival. The staff looked sullen. Ambience of the place is lovely but will only return for drinks going forward. Such a shame.
