Duke & Rye in Chichester

Beautiful repurposing of an old church. We stopped for a quick refresh after a 10 mile hike - most welcome half a Guinness from a delightful female bar tender.

Excellent visit today. I work as a support worker and we went with a few of the adults that attend the centre where I work. April was at the bar and she was very welcoming and accomdating to all of our group. This meant we all had a nice afternoon out where the attendees were able to play some pool and just be relaxed in the environment. I have passed this on to my managers and we will definitely come back to the Duke and Rye- especially if this bad weather continues!

I love this pub . It’s a converted church and it’s very large and yet cosy at the same time . I think it’s great for all ages and has a wide range of selection for drinks , although I’ve not eaten here yet . It’s my fav pub in Chichester . It’s opposite the cathedral, so easy to find .

The new bartender Thom made us feel so welcome after our team meeting, he was super quick to deal with all the customers. He would make an awesome general manager

I came into with my friend for a few drinks and games of pool and a lovely bar tender called Shannon provided a great atmosphere and was very friendly, giving us advise on other places to visit and even went the extra mile and created a beautiful shamrock on top of our Guinness’s. I would definetly recommend the duke and rye

Fantastic old church converted to a pub retaining many of its original features. Nice selection of beers and friendly service!

Me and my friend walked into the bar and I told the female bartender “Hello, Can I get a desperado?” and then she said I should correct myself and it’s “Please can I get a desperado?” I was surprised and shocked and so was my friend because she was talking like she was our mum or something. I had to even laugh about it and she still gave a cold face and rather asked for our IDs, I mean I am 26 and my friend is 24 and we look way above 18 but I think it was an excuse to kick us out if we forgot it. Very disgusting customer service, quite a shame, I was very disappointed and even my friend who is white and British said it was giving racist vibes towards me and he was disappointed too because he recommended it as a good place to drink. The only reason why I am giving it 2 star is for the good environment but horrible customer service. We even wanted to eat but had to leave cause no one even asked if we needed anything else.

Went in today and was greeted by the lovely Cassie! The pub itself is absolutely stunning and Cassie made me and my partner feel welcomed!

Had a beer here on the weekend and Cassie was really welcoming and friendly with us. Will definitely be returning

Ignored by bar staff. Despite standing at the bar for an extended amount of time the staff seemed to be happier serving louder yobs than the well behaved customers. Not a nice experience. Go elsewhere if you have the opportunity.

Beautiful converted church which makes this the most stunning bar to be in. Good selection of beers, wines and spirits etc... Food is great too. Very friendly and welcoming staff, especially Cass, great service and always a laugh. Had a great night here, definetly recommend.

Converted church with lots of character, however it does give a slight run down spoons vibe. Could probably do with a little refresh and clean again if I'm being honest.

Quirky, fascinating, not to be missed..

Was served by Connor who was lovely. Had a midday Saturday lunch and the food was excellent. Can recommend the cowboy burger but even better was my wife’s veggie burger which also had cauliflower fried wings. Everything was perfect including the freshly baked burger buns and crisp fries were spot on. A very positive lunch experience👌

Came in on a random Tuesday (16th jan) was expecting to stay for 1 drink but ended up staying for hours. The bar tender (Shannon) was incredible. Sat chatting, good service and recommendations while serving all customers and talking to them Individually. Busier than last Friday night when I came in. Would recommend and for only having 1 server, it’s great. She even recommended a game of pool (which I didn’t know they had). Would come with such friendly service, other members have not been so good so well done and will be coming more often!

While the food may not be particularly good, or the service anywhere near spectacular, this pub is in an interesting and eye catching setting and good spot to stop for a pint after visiting the nearby cathedral.

Disappointed, nothing changed from 15 years ago when it was called West's. No food available as busy in kitchen. Staff friendly.

Food is so expensive and the seating is far to close to each table. This is my personal review. Just a little disappointed.

Meal booked for family birthday pre ordered meal off set menu large family group. Starter I had ordered was not available. Two other options given one but not wanted when meals arrived had to ask for condiments on the whole meal was cold gravy already on meal experience felt like a bad fast food restaurant. No personal service. Beautiful setting but service and quality bad. Did not complain at the time as not no want to ruin my time with family

What a fantastic setting. Set in an old church with all the stained glasses windows and structural architecture. Fab service and with a great choice of food and drinks.

Always love a bar inside a former church although when it is empty the echo is particularly noticeable. Good selection of beers, friendly service and comfortable seating. The men's toilets did stink of damp though.

Went here for lunch and we were not allowed to order as they were too busy. Certainly not all the tables were full and so it was a bit of a surprise. I accept places get more orders than the kitchen can supply straight away, where normally you would be told of the wait time before your order can be filled. It then becomes our decision as to if the wait is acceptable. For us we were in no rush, so a wait would have probably been totally fine. So we had no choice but to leave and probably will not return. In addition, a minor point perhaps but when my wife went to the toilet there was no toilet paper. Clearly the whole place is understaffed.

Music is alright, plenty of varied seating and good layout, drinks are fair, however, there is not sdeignated smoking area so you have to go outside the front.

A pub in an ancient church is awesome. Drinks are reasonably priced, service on point. Friendly locals make it easier to just pop in for a drink.

The venue is amazing. Love the converted church. We met with friends. Two couple had young children and the open space really helped. Food was OK. Nothing special. But typical pub grub and a good range on the menu for everyone to choose. Great venue for chilled drinks.

Always a cool place to chill, have a drink around à good burger. The staff is very welcoming.

Beautiful building, you wouldn't even think it was a pub from the outside. ( renovated church) original features kept, I.e glass stained windows, arches woodwork. Food was good as expected. Group of 4 adults 6 children.

Highly highly recommend especially if you are a dog owner. Excellent pub, very very dog friendly which is always much appreciated. Came in with Wilson a staffy I’m looking after at the moment and the staff and manger welcomed him with open arms and straight away got him a treat and a water bowl. He loved it here and so did I! Will definitely be back in if I’m in the area again.

We stopped here for pre-dinner drinks before heading to dinner elsewhere. The setting is lovely, being in what looks like an old converted church where they have kept a lot of the features. I have to say that the tables were slightly "grubby" and a good clean wouldn't be wasted. I only had one drink before we left which was quite nice. It did remind me of a Weatherspoons with the pictures of the food that was available on the wall.

A big old church turned into a pub, it's always cool inside. The food is okay, nothing fancy just pub food. The staff are friendly and helpful. There are areas that are level enough for wheelchairs but the toilets are up steps.

A former church has been converted into a bar with an extraordinary ambience. We really liked it there. Cozy sofa corners. Cocktails, different spirits, different types of beer. You can go there as a couple or as a group - regardless of whether you are young or old. 👍

This is a beautiful bar. Great food and drink at great prices in an incredible building. First time visiting but I will definitely be going back. 10/10

Shocked to discover unable to serve any hot drinks due to not having milk. Staff did not care, when I asked if they can get some milk, no. Simple no. Not even any cream, no other solution. Very poor service!

The steak and ale pie is delicious. I will warn you it will make you very sleepy after eating.

My friend & I went in, its lovely inside. However they don't do coca cola only pepsi on tap an it was flat as a pancake , absolutely no fizz, returned it an asked for a soda water . Was t offered a refund until I asked for it, for my friend as be was too polite , but at over £3 for a flat pepsi I asked them to refund my friend of which they couldn't really refuse, as they tasted it an pulled a face! I drank the soda water an noticed a huge spider web behind my friend that had gone black, so it must of been there for ages. We were going to eat there but after the drink drama an seeing a huge big black cobweb we left an went somewhere else to have lunch . The place is very nice inside just needs better management.

Why have you got rid of strongbow original? Only for the summer we were told and so we will be back in the winter! Clearly just interested in the younger customers.

Used to come to duke and Rye all the time and since it’s changed managers the new manager with the red hair in a pony tale is SO rude. Cannot take a joke and makes you feel SO unwelcome, like ordering a drink is a pain. I feel like I’ve done something wrong and it’s not a good vibe, it makes me feel very uncomfortable. She’s needs to put a smile on her face and be able to connect with the customers because her service is horrible. The bar man Luke is lovely though and gives off good vibes and makes you feel very welcome.

I booked a cocktail making class for my friends hen party and we were beyond impressed with how amazingly organised, professional and affordable it was. The staff are so friendly and they made it a very fun experience for us all. I will definitely be returning!

Lots of lovely photos already posted in reviews of this amazing converted old church, but also to mention it sets itself apart by being the most dog-friendly pub around. Staff are genuinely professional, friendly and welcoming (and love dogs!).

We visit for the experience, it's an ex church, rather than the drinks as there is only Guinness for me. The transformation appears to have progressed some since our last Chichester visit two years ago. Facinating.
