Underwhelmed. Amuse Bouche was good but the crab fettuccine was mostly pasta and cream could taste crab but couldn’t find it! Altogether the meal did not represent good value

We generally love this pub, but just lately it's seems to have gone down hill in a big way. We had a large group for roast Sunday lunch, one of the main issues was that the staff could not even provide a decent enough carving knife to actually cut the beef nor indeed the chicken. After 5 attempts, we found a poor knife but all the other food had gone cold, also the vegetable s over salted. We had a nice day and the manager apologised and gave us a nice bottle of sparkling. We won't be rushing back! £600 spent.

I was delighted when friends suggested we went to the Duke of Cumberland for an early lunch on the way somewhere. We were first through the doors and so there was no excuse for the poor service we received. No menus were available and we had to wait 20 minutes for them to be printed. We were told they would be brought out but ended up having to go in again to prompt them. The staff had forgotten as they were too busy discussing their social lives. The food did arrive promptly and was average. The condiments we asked for never arrived because again the staff seemed more interested in their social lives. We left feeling "incidental".

We haven’t eaten here for a while and after an underwhelming Saturday lunch I remember why. The menu was uninspiring and not well executed. The scallop starter was drowned in lettuce balsamic glaze and Parmesan and the bacon wasn’t crispy. The crab and lobster pasta was light on seafood heavy on cream and Parmesan and at £28 was overpriced. Service was not bad but also not great. For the price tag it should have been better. There are better places to eat in the area.

As Londoners we do not hesitate to make the journey here for a very special roast pork and have made it many times,The setting of this centuries old pub is idyllic overlooking South Downs and it is obviously very popular and the seamless service can only be attributed to staff who enjoy their working environment. So why is it so special.Well you reserve your loin of pork in advance and it is served to you on a large wooden board accompanied by pork crackling, cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, selection of vegetables not withstanding Yorkshire pudding. The pork is delicious tender and full of flavour and you carve it.All the vegetables are fresh and aldente and roast potatoes crispy on the outside but soft inside. What is amazing on one of our visits in May meant tables had chosen the advanced booking but some chose beef and chicken all presented for and at each table. It is obviously a military operation carried put seamlessly by affable laid back engaging Simon the chef and Katherine front of house

The food was amazing and presented beautifully (see photos); crayfish and prawn salad to start, steak salad for main and an Eton mess for pudding. Very nice indeed. The menu detailed the dishes more elaborately than I could describe here but I didn't take a photo of it. The service was very good, the dining room was very nicely presented with a nice atmosphere. Very reasonably priced and we will definitely be back soon. I have already been telling my friends and work colleagues about this place.

Love this place and previously had a great experience. Sadly this time got charged for drinks we didn’t have. The Duke of Cumberland is set within glorious extensive gardens with numerous seating areas available outside to enable customers to enjoy the views. They have now added a heated marquee to house extra tables for dining and paid particular care to ensure social distancing is paramount. They provide a table service (the bar area is closed) and this seems to be working very well. There is a gazebo outside which has a wood fire and seating area together with a roaring firepit. The entrance has been changed to provide a one way system and it has been well thought out and designed. We were a table of four eating dinner in the main restaurant area and our food was excellent, as was the accompanying wine. Overall, the team at The Duke of Cumberland are doing their utmost to allow all customers to continue to visit and enjoy the facilities, ambience and good food. However, customers must remember that these are difficult times and adaptations have been put in place to ensure, not only their safety, but that of the pub staff. These changes may mean that you find the service is a little slower than usual but that is only to be expected when they have to work in a different manner whilst continuing to provide high quality dishes. My own view, and that of the rest of our party, is... head to "The Duke", enjoy the great location, excellent food and friendly atmosphere, and most importantly relax and enjoy their hospitality. With the colder months approaching, they are also focused on providing adequate heating (fire pits, heaters inside and out) to allow us all to continue to enjoy visiting their great pub - well done "Team Duke".

The tables are well spaced and provide reasonable room for diners. The menu looks interesting and is a considerably different from usual pub fare. However the delivery was a little disappointing mainly because of the barely adequate portion sizes. The food is well cooked and presented. I had mussels, my wife had crab and we shared a cheese platter for desert. The main downside is the very slow service - we were seated for about 15 minutes before we were given a menu and then had a further wait (obviously) before we could order. We were told this was because it was only the manger who was authorised to take orders. I do not know how many tables there were in the the dining areas but too many for one person. Our food arrived sooner than expected but only because of our previous experience. There was another long wait between our main course and the cheese board. There were other failings with cutlery not being provided. The prices are not as extortionate (as one writer suggests) but it was a bit more than I would expect to pay for this type of food. It is a pity because this is a spectacular location but maybe that accounts a bit for the price.I do recommend trying it but only if you have a lot of time on your hands. There is a car park but we had booked for 1:00 and it was full meaning we left our car in the lane outside.

We came here for lunch and it was a fantastic experience looking out over the South Downs. The starters squid, tunworth and scallops were all absolutely delicious and the main courses of the seafood salad, pulled pork bap and fish & chips were similarly amazing. Definitely worth a visit and they are prepping themselves for the COVID-19 winter season

Amazing Service from all the staff and excellent food made for a very special Anniversary meal for myself and my Girlfriend. The Pub has a great system in place that follows all gov guidelines. Incredible views of Black down and Thunderstorms from the full covered terrace. The Scollops and Ratatouille made me feel like the food critic from the Film Ratatouille (in case you haven't seen the film, this is a very good thing). We both had the Crab which was so fresh and delicious I'm pretty sure it winked at me (disclaimer: the crab was not alive nor did it have eyes.) Dessert was very Special and deserves its own Paragraph. Before Lockdown myself and my Girlfriend visited Disneyworld for a well deserved break, especially for my Gf. While we were there, every morning we would have Mickey Waffles which are basically waffles in the shape of Mickey Mouse. THE OWNER/HEAD CHEF MADE ME AND MY GF MICKEY WAFFLES. IT WAS AMAZING.I visited the pub the previous week and had asked if a bespoke pudding would be possible. The answer was yes and on arrival not a word was said, the entire staff was in on it and they kept the ruse going so well I almost thought they had forgotten. they even brought out a pudding menu as a distraction. genius.

Setting is lovely. First courses of duck and squid were good, the burger and wedges excellent, lamb tasty and crab nicely dressed, albeit unimaginative. Home made bread was ok, but when we asked for extra, we were told it was strictly rationed at one roll per person. The real let down was the service, which was slow and graceless. Our table was overlooked, we had to ask for menus, it took forever for our order to be taken, and there were lengthy waits between first and main course and then effectively we were ignored once our main course had been served. We asked for desert menus, were forgotten, and then waited another 20 minutes before cancelling the desert and paying the bill. No reduction for Eat out to help out, so it is clear that this is a venue which doesn’t need new custom or cares particularly for its clients.

Just had a perfect lunch, with amazing service in beautiful surroundings. Very efficient setup with adherence to COVID guidelines, whilst making us feel assured and relaxed. The staff were absolutely professional when dealing with an extremely loud, obnoxious and rude customer who had an issue with Mayonnaise! Hats off to all at the Duke- we ll be back soon:-)

We had Dinner here last week Thursday evening . We are 2 adults and 2 children . The boys had a shared starter of pancake roll and then children’s fish and chips , followed by ice cream . I had scallop followed by peppercorn stake . Followed by Irish coffee . The sauce was very watery and tasteless . When mentioned to the waitress she asked if we knew the industry and that they had a chef go socks on them . My husband had ravioli followed. YPork belly The pork was Far over cooked verging On burnt . Followed by ice cream . With drinks the total was a staggering £175 Far overpriced for the quality of the food and service . We would not recommend this place for food . Ok for drinks .
