We almost didn't eat there as we couldn't find it - the reason being there is scaffolding round the door and the restaurant is in the basement. Very pleased we finally found it though. Food was excellent - both taste and presentation, and the staff very friendly and chatty. The restaurant itself is small but atmospheric . The only criticism I would make is that they add 10% to the bill, which is not something that restaurants do in our area of the country and which we find unfair. We always leave a generous tip for good service but feel it should be up to the customer and not automatically added.

We used to visit this restaurant when it was Hewatts and the high standards have been maintained. The setting is smaller and a little more cramped but the atmosphere is warm and friendly. Food is beautifully cooked and presented and of a high standard and the wine is well priced. Staff are helpful and friendly and you are never rushed out of the restaurant. Do not be put off by the scaffolding outside or the fact it is in a tourist area. This is a high quality restaurant at very economical prices. Highly recommended.

Went to Dubh Prais for a special occasion - a dinner with my family for my graduation. The power was down due to problems with the provider. The staff handled the emergency extremely well and turned the venue in a nice and cozy candle-light restaurant. The food was delicious (amazing scallops!) and the desserts were too. Everything was reasonably priced. (starters, main, dessert and wine amounts to £45 per person). Highly recommended!

Living in Edinburgh, we are spoilt for choice with restaurants. Me and a few friends went to this restaurant on the Royal Mile. Some times I have found that having a great location results in lower standards as demand is high - but i was BLOWN AWAY by my starter (scallops and prawns) and the mains were just as delicious. It is proper Scottish food, cooked in an exceptional way! The wine list was impressive and great value! I will certainly be frequenting here and taking guests who are after a true taste of scottish cuisine. Thanks and keep up the great work....

We were invited to eat here. If you want to do the same, booking is essential as there are only 24 seats. The menu, if you peruse on the webpage is not extensive but everything is well thought out, quite original and delicious. I opted for the Cullen Skink, with mussels, rich, tasty and the addition of mussels gave it a novel twist. Collops of Beef with mash and root vegetables is a dish made for red wine. Our group ate the Smoked Salmon, Black Pudding and Mushrooms as starters ,all beautifully cooked, presented and were delicious. Mains we consumed were Chicken, Halibut, & Seabass. All were deemed delicious. The "Gourmet" Cheeseboard was a little underwhelming as were the Baileys Creme Brulee, however they were still reasonable. In all, well worth the money, costs may be regarded as high but that's the cost of being small but well formed.

It was delicious. If it was socially acceptable, I would have picked up the bowl and licked it clean! For dinner I enjoyed The Filet of Aberdeen Angus Beef. All elements on the dish were cooked perfectly and the sauce was excellent! The only low point of the meal was the desert. I ordered the crème brulee. It was obvious that it was prepared well in advance and likely sat in a refrigerator for quite some time. The sugar was overly torched so became a little bitter but I was so full from the rest of the meal I am not even sure why I ordered it in the first place. A great meal – I recommend.

You go down a set of stairs to enter this intimate restaurant. There are maybe 12 tables. Dinner was fabulous. We both had the Filet of Aberdeen Beef. Cooked to perfection and included sides. Portions were just right. Topped off by Sticky Butterscotch Pudding (can't do toffee as that is way too British lol). The restaurant was empty when we started, however we were hurried in making our selection. My friend had never been to Scotland before, so she had a few questions about the menu. The food was good when it arrived, however at the end we asked to split the bill 50/50. The waitress wasn't able to work out half of the bill, and we were asked whether we would like to leave a tip (10% service charge is already added to the bill). We were then asked to pay an extra pound so the waitress 'wouldn't get told off'. Slightly bizarre. Shame, as the food is good.

Dubh Prais means "a black cooking pot" and indeed the one owned by the grandmother of the restaurant's originator James, hangs in the small room which seats around thirty guests. It's hard to find, between scaffolding (though not for long) and down a flight of stairs. Drawn in by the excellent reviews, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I had a Cardhu whisky, smoked salmon starter and a wild mushroom pasta, all of which were first class. My husband loved his pea and leek soup and his mixed seafood. As it turns out, most of the older reviews were for James' restaurant but the restaurant is under new ownership, for less than a month. I would ignore the disgruntled reviewer who complained that their starter came too fast (say what??) ... this is excellent food, beautifully cooked and served, and the place is a welcome little find. It was my first time, but whatever it was before, it is still a gem now. Most of the patrons seemed to be locals, and everyone looked as pleased as we were. I will definitely be back.

She had the Scallop followed by the Sea Bass and I had the Black Pudding and then the Collops of Aberdeen Angus steak. The meal was delicious and the service first rate. It was a refreshing change to be served so politely and with such attention. We drank only water, had no sweet and the bill came to £61.60 (which included their 10% service charge). If this place is under new management (as I'm reliably informed it is), then they are making a very good job of following what appears to have been a class act. We will return.

We have been visiting this restaurant for a long number of years. We have sung lyrically about James's attention to detail, great cooking and use of local ingredients. When we arrived, it was a great disappointment to learn that he had retired and sold the restaurant. We were initially heartened to learn that the Menu looked very similar. However, the attention is in the detail. Where before you could be sure the best of beef, vegetables and sauces, would be excellently prepared, we soon realised that this was now not the case. We had ordered, and consumed our starter and main course within 35 minutes. Starters obviously "ready to go". If we had wished fast food, we would have went for a Pizza. The evening was highlighted by a fellow diner, who chewed and chewed his "collop of beef" before giving up, declaring it inedible. Previously, the "collop" had been a fillet of best scotch beef, now it was a braised shin of beef, at best. Staff were welcoming. What used to be a "destination" restaurant, has been transformed into a "run of the mill" restaurant, where good Scottish fayre is not available. The photographs displayed on TP are not indicative of the current Menu and need to be replaced.

After a long day of travel from London, we wanted something more than a quick bite. There were so many to choose from and I'm glad that we went to Dubh Prais. We came in around 7pm and didn't have a reservation, but the restaurant accommodated us (they advised us that they would need the table by 9 pm for a big group coming in and this was not a problem for us). Service was fast but we didn't feel rushed. And our meal was excellent! There were something for everyone in the menu; even our kids enjoyed their meal (the portions were big enough for our two boys to share an entree).

Was in Edinburgh for 3 days tried a lot of the local fair, nothing compares to this place. Hidden gem with only 8-10 tables with a very pleasant ambiance, and amazing food. Had the venison, it was cooked perfectly with a port wine sauce so good i wanted to lick the plate clean. The wife is vegetarian and they had a wonderful veggie and nut cutlet cooked in a mix of spices that was also delicious, truly an unexpected bonus as Edinburgh is very short on good vegetarian options. Wonderful place if you are in old town Edinburgh you have to try it

Been here a couple of times now, and is our favourite restaurant in the city. Good quality Scottish food, well presented and attentive service. Not the cheapest but worth it. Decent selection of quality malts to finish off. Yes, you need to book and worth coming back another night if they're full!

It is small restaurant on the Royal Mile. You must book to ensure a table. AND if you book please make sure you all actually turn up! It is not fair to staff or other customers if you don't honour your booking. The food was sensational, authentic Scottish fare. The owners/ staff were welcoming and experienced. A great find in Edinburgh.

Even though we reserved a seat only earlier that day (and got one because we were willing to dine at a particularly early time), once we realized how small this place was we were glad we had done so. Located on the Royal Mile, and in a busy area, but down in a basement, with the front of the building under construction, it took some faith on our part to go ahead with our plan. Faith rewarded! Friendly waitresses serving Scottish style food, this place provided a perfect introduction to the country's tastes. Menu is limited, but everything that my wife and I tried was quite good (including a haggis appetizer!). A particularly helpful place if your hotel is near the Royal Mile. Prices were not inexpensive, but worth what we were served.

We visited this very small restaurant (maybe 24 seats) below street level about midway on the Royal Mile. We called ahead and were able to get reservations for 5:45pm the day of our arrival in town. Otherwise the restaurant was booked. It must be a vey popular place as it was full by 6:15pm. The menu selection was limited but the food was very good and the service attentive. The kitchen which is visible upon arrival down the stairs is incredibly small. It is amazing that they can cook so well in such a tiny place. The home made ice cream desert was exceptional. A very nice place for dinner.

We found this restaurant using TripAdvisor and the reviews. We decided to make reservations, 2 weeks ahead and you must call, to dine here for my wife's birthday. All I can say is wow!! The dinner experience was amazing. Do not expect to get in and get out, it is a slow service meal. You begin with a starter, then have your dinner, desert, and finally your after dinner drink. This was worth every penny and more. We will come back here the next time we are in Edinburgh.

This restaurant is small (below street level just off the Royal Mile); it serves traditional Scottish food (haggis, venison, salmon etc.); service is high quality; wine selection excellent. Apparently their whiskey choice is also good for an after dinner drink (but I don't drink that !). We had to make a reservation as there were 10 of us on a Saturday evening; as I said its a small place. Fabulous atmosphere and great evening

This is a terrific, small nondescript restaurant off the Royal Mile. In an area with enough tourist trap type places, this restaurant is a breath of fresh air. Friendly staff and excellent food. I don't think you can go wrong with any menu option - each dish we ordered was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the sole, and the lamb was a winner as well. Definitely a great choice for a high quality Scottish meal in Old Town.

Arriving without a reservation we were delighted to be seated without delay and to begin perusing the comprehensive menu.Having never tasted haggis I opted for it as starter. It plus the mushroom pie were very tasty. Next we had fillet of Angus steak and lemon sole. Accompanied by refreshing Belhaven 80 Shilling beer, all were delicious. The staff were great, friendly, helpful and attentive. A very enjoyable and relaxing introduction to Edinburgh dining.

A quaint and quiet place in the rush of the Royal Mile. You almost miss the entrance. YOu go down the stairs, the noise of the busy street behind you becomes less and less and than you are in a very cozy, charming little restaurant with just 8 tables you´d never expected to find there. We were lucky to get the last not reserved table. Enjoyed excellent food, haggis on a phenomenal Whiskey sauce and a steak that was perfectly done the way I wanted it. It was so good! The service is attentive without being intrusive. It was the perfect location the celebrate the last evening of our trip to Edinburgh!I´d go there again. You should make reservations and ask for a table in the corner!

My husband and I were looking for a non "touristy" place close to our hotel ( just off the Royal Mile) . We found that in this small intimate restaurant. We had appetizers, main course ( tornadoes of beef you could cut with a fork and the lamb was excellent) as well as dessert. We will remember our experience at Dubh Prais!! Food and service were excellent! Suggest making a reservation.

We were there to try Scottish food. So we ordered 3 starters, 2 desert and one main dish for two of us to share. We were told only after settling down that everyone must order main dish and can't share. So we chose the next door instead. We didn't try the food but the price is obviously higher than the neighbours.

We arrived for Mother's Day and was given a table at the door on a very cold day. Asked for a warmer seat but was told all tables reserved. But there were empty tables all the time we were. Waited 20mins for drinks order then advised that the wine we ordered was out stock. Duck was over cooked and couldn't cut thru one portion. Was so miserable with the coldness couldn't be bothered to complain. Will not be back. Although I feel the staff who were having a nice chat behind the bar wouldn't care.
