Had a great lunch here today whilst visiting Harrogate, as part of our summer Yorkshire staycation and what a lucky find it was. This is a very traditional seafood restaurant, with super friendly and obviously experienced staff. The menu has something to suit everyone with a wide choice of both shellfish and seafood. I had the queen scallops in garlic butter & melted cheese for a starter whilst my husband had the King scallops with “hen in the woods’ which is a kind of fungus- or delicious wild mushroom! The mains were perfectly cooked fillets of cod with slow cooked oxtail and hake with a lobster and PX sauce. All absolutely delicious. Will definitely return next time we are in Harrogate- might even make a detour!

We visited on Wednesday night and sat in the window upstairs which was lovely. We eat out quite a bit as long-standing residents of Harrogate but we hadn’t eaten here for a while. The food was exceptional… beautifully cooked scallops to start. The main courses of fillet of cod and the hot seafood bowl were also well cooked, just the right size and tasted wonderful. We picked a great bottle of South African white wine to go with it. Couldn’t fault anything if I’m honest. Will definitely come back.. and we won’t leave it so long this time.

Very fulfilling and warming experience at Drum and Monkey. Seated on the second floor with a stunning view of the streets of Harrogate. Recommended a beautiful french white wine from the waitress who couldn’t have given us a better evening or service. From oysters to mackerel and soft hake to toffee pudding the food was emasculate. The evening went so fast we didn’t even realise we’d been there over three hours! We forgot our umbrella there that evening and they managed to hold it for us and give it to us early the next day no questions asked. Thank you!

We visited The Drum and Monkey for the first time this lunchtime. We had a downstairs table in a quiet corner, which was perfect for us. The service was excellent and the waiter discussed the menu with us before ordering. We chose the prawn cocktail starter, Lobster Thermidor, surf and turf and finished with the cheeseboard and honey parfait. Everything we order was absolutely delicious. The Cold Bath lager was also a fantastic addition as was the organic Pinot Grigio. The portions were perfect for us and more than enough for anyone. We will definitely be returning in future and highly recommend it to new customers. The welcome is lovely and the food, out of this world. As for the reviews complaining about the pricing, yes it is more expensive than local reastaurants, but it is completely worth the cost given the exception quality and choice offered.

We visited the Drum and Monkey foir the first time today woth reservations, We were soon put at ease and found the setting to be lovely, in the heart of Harrogate, We were welcomed and shown promptly to our seat, The Food was excellent to say the least, the service also was excellent but not over attentive. We started with two prawn cocktails which were delicious to say the least and i couldnt resist the Lobster Thermador for main course and my Wife settled on the Surf and Turf with half a garlic Lobster both meals were cooked to perfection and well presented. we ate at a leisurely pace and had a couplke of drinks to help the food go down, i had the local cold bath pilsner which was lovely and my wife had a couple of glasses of Pinot Grigio which she enjoyed so much she has bought a bottle from Asda for tonight :D , we ended by having desert, i had the 3 Yorkshire cheese board and my wife had the honey parfait , i finished with a double espresso and finally we asked for the bill, All i can say is Excellent in every way, Food Service and Presentation, this was my first visit although other family members have been before and thoroughly recommended, We will be returning in December on our Wedding Anniversary, but only if i can wait that long.

Came here for dinner. Ordered the king scallops. The scallops were cooked perfect, but the purée was horrible and looked like vomit on a plate. I was very put off. For the mains we had the Salmon dish and Monkfish dish. Monkfish was amazing. Salmon was overcooked and the sauce was very buttery. Menu was overpriced and the chef needs to work on the accompaniments on the dishes. Overall experience was average and we will not be returning. Can find better seafood elsewhere.

We hadn't visited in many years but thought we'd give ourselves a treat, and what a treat we got. A lovely welcome and a great waitress. We had booked and were offered a table by the window, perfect. We both had different choices for starters and mains, really very good fish and seafood. Can't comment re. steaks but the food we ate was really top notch. The wine list offers good choice and value especially compared to many places. Though a birthday treat this time we'll certainly be back next time. I'd suggest booking ahead to ensure you get a table. We went on a Monday evening and it was packed when we left.

Just arrived back after our second visit after being so impressed the first time by the food. We booked online very easily. We were sat downstairs on quite a small but adequate table with a shelf for wine. We were served a basket of nice bread and butter and then starters arrived. We thoroughly enjoyed a dish of scallops with chicken of the woods mushrooms and sardines with a curried mayo. Mains were hake and cod fillets. The fish were perfectly cooked. We had a bowl of sautéed veg to accompany them. The meal concluded with a cheese board and a coffee. Together with a bottle of wine the meal came to a very reasonable £100 not including tip. Service was excellent.

The Drum and Monkey is a wonderful restaurant , it wasn’t over booked there was enough space between the tables so that it didn’t make us feel uncomfortable. The food was delicious I had prawn cocktail starter which was just enough because I knew I was going to have the hot fish medley/ bowl, it was just large enough to satisfy my appetite and not be over facing . My husband had the surf and turf which comprised of half a lobster and a sirloin steak he said it was the best steak he had in a very long time and the lobster was lovely. The bill was a little on the expensive side but it did include a cocktail and a bottle of white wine.

On the off chance I looked for best fish restaurants for a cheeky wkend away in various places. I saw Drum & Monkey read the reviews and booked it for Saturday. We walked past the restaurant on Friday and it was packed, which was a good sign. When we arrived on Saturday the place was empty. The waiter asked if we had been before, which we hadn't and went through what we needed to do with regards to COVID!! He then went onto say well you have the place to yourselves down here so sit back and relax, which I thought was lovely. He was really helpful when it came to the food helping us to decide etc etc.. Well when the food arrived we could not believe it, it was absolutely amazing. We had starters as well as a main meal and I am so pleased I had the trout as there was no way I would have eaten what my partner had (pictures shown). We will definitely be returning back to this restaurant when we go back to Harrogate and if anyone wants a fish restaurant I can recommend this place. I can seriously say this is my favourite fish restaurant by far ❤

A really lovely restaurant. Quaint setting in a nice part of town. The welcome was a little cool at first but they warmed up. The menu is my wife's dream though the cold platter relies a bit too much on variations of prawn (the menu says this but my wife though there would be more of the anchovies and salmon and crab). She also ordered the lobster tail but there wasn't too much of it sadly. We shared oysters to start in a Worcestershire sauce, which I loved but didn't suit my wife's taste. I also had surf and turf. The lobster was a little small again though the steak was amazing. We will definitely go back though I think we didn't pick correctly. That said we expected more from the lobster being a speciality restaurant

Booked before a 3 day visit to Harrogate, so didn't quite know what to expect. The Eat out to Help out scheme was in full swing and the weather was very good so in order to avoid disappointment we booked this place before leaving our home prior to out stay in Harrogate. Ridiculously convenient for us as we were staying in the Travelodge. The Drum and Monkey is located in a narrow street in an old house and is spread over a couple of floors. I think casual snacks and dining are downstairs with table in the small upper room overlooking the street below. Bar is downstairs, but it feels like someone's house, in a good way. Both the ladies who served us were friendly and had some nice chat, and made you feel they were interested in serving you, not just delivering a plate of food. Excellent NZSB wine, perfectly chilled. Oysters to share for starters, and salmon mousse, all of which was excellent. Hubby had the lobster which he declared delicious and I had the cold mixed shellfish platter. Nice bread to accompany too. Felt cosy and intimate, without being over the top. Really would recommend this for a celebration or special occasion. Yes, a tad pricey, but you can see what you're paying for in the quality of the food, surroundings, ambience and the service. Actually, the wine was good value. The name sounds as if you're looking for a pub, rather than a high end restaurant. Heartily recommend this place.

Visited yesterday for lunch. Although we had booked a table when we arrived the booking wasn’t on the system. Showed screen shot of confirmation After a short wait though the lady did find us a table. Five of us. Three adults and two children. Meal was very nice. The King prawns (£25) were attacked with great gusto ! They were delicious. My soup a bit nondescript with only two pieces of fish in. The fresh crab we broke ourselves was good. But the flaked crab meat had several bony bits in. And was flavourless We had four starters. Three mains And then three deserts All were very very good. We asked for two extra spoons so the two children could share the deserts Quite reluctantly given. The bill was £108. Because it was Monday lunch time it qualified for the Chancellor eat out to help out scheme The bill came and only £30 was taken off. We had not had any alcohol. Only food. As we all work in hospitality ourselves. And all three of us were returning back to our own businesses. Very busy this August. But were enjoying lunch out between working with our own guests We queried this. The lady was VERY SNAPPY. You’ve not spent enough. Another earlier review says the same Our food was £108. Five of us. The Gov pay 50% off. Up to £10 per person. Our discount should have been £50 Five of us Another lady said. Oh. Should have been £40 off. We happened upon this restaurant whilst on a 2 night staycation in Harrogate newly emerging from the recently imposed hibernation looking to support home grown local businesses and also for clues following a Murder Mystery Treasure Trail (also good fun). We saw the menu in the window and their re-opening was being celebrated with a lobster festival and were offered a great deal of two courses for £36.50. We called to book not really knowing what to expect in this new socially distanced world of dining out, but we needn't have worried. We were heartily welcomed and given a choice of table. The next nearest customers were easily a good two metres away and we felt completely comfortable. After suffering a two year lobster drought since a holiday abroad, we eagerly ordered the Thermidore and it was well worth the wait! The lobster meat was freshly succulent and laid in that signature luscious creamy white wine sauce hidden under a lightly grilled crocheted blanket of cheese. It was simply devine and a joy to eat. Just gorgeous, and the experience didn't end there, because the desserts were just as impressive. I had the berry pudding with cream and my dining companion had the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and both were equally delicious! All served with perfect timing and a friendly smile. Even the warm bread was comfortingly good!.. The wine recommendation was a perfect accompaniment to an all round fantastic meal and we left vowing to return. If you love seafood this is the place you need to visit!...

Tasty, and cooked to perfection, and presented lovely. Atmosphere very relaxing, and although not a large restaurant we never felt we were being rushed, in fact we were the last to leave. If we return to Harrogate I am sure we will be going back. You must try folks.

Stumbled across the Drum & Monkey by chance while looking for a lunch spot in Harrogate and were glad that we did! This is a fabulous authentic local pub/restaurant serving delicious seafood at good prices. We started with a dozen oysters to share...absolutely fantastic and extremely tasty. We then had a bowl of mussels and a dressed crab. Again, both were simply served and absolutely hit the spot. All washed down with a couple of pints of Guinness/chilled glass of fresh NZ Sauvignon. Good value and great service, with a shout out to the staff and particularly the really friendly waiter who looked after us upstairs. Would definitely recommend.

I have visited the Drum and Monkey 3 or 4 times over the past ten years. I believe it was a Victorian pub, with its bar still retained. It is quite charming and has character, and was fully booked when we went on a Saturday night, so I would advise to book especially at a weekend. We ordered two courses,a bottle of wine, Dover Sole and a dessert and coffees and brandy.(£132.00 The sole was delicious, although I did find it quite dishonest that there was no price on the blackboard, for lobsters, or soles. Only "MP" market price, which could have been marked on the blackboard, so unless you are prepared to ask you could be surprised! I did not ask, and guessed about £25.00 each, it turned out to be £32.00 a fillet. To list the price of lobster and sole at the days market price on the blackboard would be a lot more honest for dinners!. We ordered two brandy's and finished up getting one and an armerretto. But overall the experience was nice and I would return again.

From start to finish, my lunch was superb. Fish soup to start was probably the best I’ve had, then the hot shellfish platter was superb. Service was perfect, and the surroundings were suitably fresh and simple. I recommend this place to anyone with taste!

First time we've visited the Drum and Monkey, despite living in Harrogate for five years (it's taken us so long to pay a visit mainly because there are so many restaurants in the town). The dining room is quite small, which means it's essential to book, but it creates a cosy, friendly atmosphere. The food is of a very high quality, the only slight quibble being that my wife said her whitebait starter was rather too greasy. My seafood linguine was perfect, with just enough sauce but not too much. Our friends were also very impressed, and our only regret was that it has taken so long to get round to eating here, We'll definitely be back.

Been coming to Harrogate for a number of years but had somehow avoided the Drum and Monkey. Not anymore and I can't imagine visiting the area and not wanting to dine here every time. The food is absolutely delicious. As a fan of all things from then sea this place is a dream with a fantastic range of beautifully prepared dishes with perfectly matched flavours. The staff, one particular waitress in particular (sure anyone who has eaten there will know who she is) are amongst the most passionate and knowledgable I've ever experienced with incredible detail to offer on not just the food but the history of the local area. Top class wine menu also and not unreasonably priced. Nothing but positives to say.

The food was pretty good, although we got off to a bad start because we were attracted by the special menu advertised both online and in the menu window onsite. Upon asking about this, we were told that this menu was not offered during the holiday season (it was between Christmas and new year). This is their prerogative of course, but it struck us as poor practice not to remove the menu from their listings or even have a disclaimer. The first waiter who took our order was actually pretty rude and was replaced by another staff member. During the whole experience, we were “entertained” by the staff standing behind the bar talking loudly about their personal business. This is not a cheap restaurant but, although the food was good, the overall experience was poor.

The lovely staff so kindly fitted us in for a last minute lunch booking on Christmas Eve. Very efficient service where nothing was too much trouble and even though the restaurant was packed, we were so welcomed. All the dishes we had were exquisite, seafood perfectly cooked and so fresh, you can see why this restaurant is so popular. Definitely worth a visit when you are in Harrogate. Can’t wait to return in April!

Three of us enjoyed dinner at this lovely restaurant that specialised in fish/seafood dishes. The food was outstanding. Starters: My fish soup was delicious. My friends ordered the trio of smoked salmon/prawn/crab with rocket and the salt and chilli calamari (portion on the small side). I ordered from the daily menu the rock Bass served with puréed celeriac and carrots - I ordered a side salad with it: once again so good. My friends loved their mains as well - cod and fish pie. No desert this time. The service was good. Will definitely be back when I am back in Harrogate

Excellent seafood for our table of four although the squid starter was rather small. We had a wide variety of different fish and all were served we’ll be it monkfish, whole trout or seafood plate. The staff were warm and affable, we did wait for almost an hour between starter and main however.

A real Treat. Unfortunately, you will probably have to book weeks in advance as it is so popular. Have been for over 40 years. Only downside is that my late father is no longer here to enjoy those sumptuous long lunches! Pricey but very well worth it.

We took our two week old baby out for dinner with friends last night and the Drum and Monkey couldn’t have been more accommodating. They moved tables around so we could fit the pram in, they looked after us and generally made us feel really welcome. Every member of staff was keen to be help, suggesting wine choices and advising us on sides etc. The place feels family run and it was a completely relaxing first venture out as new parents. Thank you!

This particular restaurant is only a few yards from where we were staying overnight. Although it is a seafood restaurant there are also meat and vegetable options on the menu. There is a very large choice of dishes which are obviously fresh and not from some catering company. It is difficult to say any more about the food other than that it was all served in a reasonable time and was delicious.

We stumbled across this restaurant by accident as it was raining and very close to our hotel. We booked in for an early sitting and had a three course meal done comfortably in 2 hours by 8pm. The restaurant is small but beautiful. The waiter was fantastic and very helpful. He recommended a few dishes for me and I ended up trying the lobster!! Never eaten lobster before and was excited to try it. My word it was delicious! Also had the crab and avocado to start which again was beautiful. My partner had muscles and sea bass. All the dishes were amazing. We had some lovely white wine and port with the creme brûlée to finish. Overall so happy with our visit here and definitely need to return soon. Next time I will be ordering a full lobster and not just half!!!

My mum and I drove to Harrogate for an impromptu lunch, without a plan of where to go. We parked close by and the wonderful aromas coming from the restaurant were too enticing to ignore. I've been here once before, for dinner, but this was my first lunchtime visit. Crispy tempura octopus to start, and the fattest sea bream I've ever seen to follow. Everything just cooked to perfection. My partner had the queen scallops to start and the plaice from the specials board, and that, too, was to die for. A lovely crisp bottle of Muscadet to accompany, as much water as you wanted, and bread (left on the table throughout - so many places take it away after your starters). The waiting staff could not have been more attentive, or knowledgeable.
