Our first post-lockdown visit to a pub and restaurant, and it was a good one! The food was very good - fish and chips and the daily special of chicken in a creamy sauce. Generous portions, piping hot, and on hot plates. Fast, efficient, friendly service and great value for money.

Kept waiting to be greeted for lunch while staff members were present but ignoring us for about 5 minutes. The greeting when it finally came was not rude but verged on the unfriendly. We we were allocated to the marquee at the back of the garden (no inside eating due to covid rules). The path and steps out of the Inn to the garden were dirty and there was a mess round the unused barbeque on the right of the path. We sat down in the marquee, which is dirty, and sited in front of a garage like door, next to old rubbish, including a gas canister. A waitress arrived to tell us in an unfriendly manner we were sitting at the wrong table (when we had not previously been given a table number) and she would have to alter the computer system. All of that was a very bad start. We felt the reverse of being welcomed. The outdoor dining menu was very limited. We ordered lasagne. Then waited patiently for over 50 minutes for it to arrive. No apology for the delay. The lasagne bore no relation to a proper lasagne. It was served in a round dish with a lot of what tasted like a thin cheddar cheese sauce, more like soup. The mince had not been properly cooked, evidenced by a lot of balls of clumped mince that had not been separated out by cooking. The lasagne sheets were so over cooked that they were a mush. The side salad was not very fresh and liberally coated in balsamic. It was very poor food.We will not be re-visiting the Dragon Inn but will pay a return visit to The Bear when it re-opens.

This is a great pub/restaurant with rooms, really well located as a base for hill walking in the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. We thought the restaurant food was tasty, well presented and fairly priced. We particularly felt that the staff (who we met at breakfast, afternoon beer time and at dinner) were always friendly, co-operative and knowledgable and made us feel very welcome. Beer delicious as well.I saw some recent negative reviews of the staff - genuinely I am. very surprised because we felt that the front of house team were a real credit to the place. If you have a car much bigger than a Ford Focus, think twice about trying to access the scarily narrow car park entrance! Park your 4x4 on the street...Bedrooms are, shall we say, "charming", with some occasionally very loud plumbing and creaky floors. But we will certainly be coming back, and you can't say better than that.

We stayed in room 20 which is a two bedroom apartment. Absolutely perfect for the walking and drinking holiday we had taken in place of a biking holiday in Majorca due to the virus. Possibly a little over the top on the virus measures but I understand my conceptions differ to others and that the ultra safe precautions are appreciated by many. We ate here on one of our nights with the lasagne being a highlight. Even better when dipped with the halloumi fries! Breakfast was also very pleasant. Service could have been quicker but we were not in any great rush so fitted our agenda perfectly. The car park has a super tight entrance. Nervous drivers might want to consider parking in the town car park which is only a few minutes walk up the road.Overall excellent pub/B+B. We will be back. Thanks The Dragon. :-)

This used to be an OK alternative to Bear Hotel. Eaten here a couple of times in the past 6 months and very disappointed. We were booked in for dinner and watched most of the unbooked folks turned away. We weren't greeted, we were met by a member of staff with a face mask under her nose, on a lectern, and marked as present on her clipboard. Staff were very busy, reasonably attentive, no time for pleasantries.Steak was just OK, no attempt to make the plate look enticing. Chips were just warm and mushy.Pudding was a poorly presented bought--in. Shame. Lovely building, lovely garden with extra seating, tricky car park entrance through ancient coach way. Should have listened to the locals.

Perfectly cooked & presented and served with a delicious traditional homemade Glamorgan vege sausage.A special mention must go to the amazing restaurant manager Francesca who managed the entire breakfast room and servings for all guests single handedly and always with a smile. Nothing was too much trouble for her & her customer service was exemplary.Another special thank you must go to one of the hotel managers, Beth. We booked a table ahead. We were given a menu but no mention of starters, we guessed it was a mistake we asked the waitress who said, I don’t know if we do starters, eventually she asked another waitress who said they didn’t do them. A little unusual for a pub offering food. We ordered a bottle of wine, which was plonked on the table with the cork still in it. I had to take the bottle to the bar to get it opened. The actual meal eventually arrived and was average I guess. Warning if you have the sausage and mash the sausages are very peppery. We were disappointed with the whole experience, the food and service wasn’t good. Know body can blame COVID, service is service with or without COVID.

It was by default that we stayed 2 nights at the Dragon Hotel. We rejected a room at the Old Rectory with a filthy ensuite (see separate review) and managed to get into the Dragon at short notice. Thank goodness we did. The room and facilities were absolutely spotless. Thee was a one way system, constant cleaner, copious hand sanitiser and an obliging staff. We had room 11 in the attic. It was a typical attic room with low beams but fine for us. Breakfast was freshly cooked and delicious with a wide option of juices and cold and hot options. Social distancing was strictly adhered to and the one way system made sense. We ate outside for our evening meal. There are lovely areas to eat and drink outside. Service was a bit slow due to its popularity but the food was delicious and worth waiting for. Camembert salad for me and venison for my husband. There was an ample selection of food despite the circumstances. The staff seemed hard working and cheerful. It's great to see the owners mucking in too. We felt safe there. Well done the Dragon!

Not much open on a Monday during Covid restrictions but we managed to book a table for dinner in the outside area. It was in a marquee at the end of a terraced garden and there was a notice with a QR code taped to the table. Luckily I had a smart phone and managed to download a QR code reader after a while, this produced a limited food and drink menu. We ordered drinks, then food afterwards which meant we incurred 2 service charges of 30p and then another for a coffee afterwards. The food took a long time to arrive (although not as long as the email confirming it was coming which arrived about 3 hours later!) and was quite tasty but very cold, perhaps it had been hanging around or perhaps it was just due to the half mile trip from the kitchen. There was no parmesan for the pasta, strangely "due to the covid restrictions", maybe that was the reason for the lack of interest and service from the staff too?

We had a week in Wales and had 2 really good meals. The Dragon Inn was the other side of the coin. It was really poor. The food was below average pub food. However, the really poor part was the service which was atrocious. Staff had obviously not been trained and didn't know how to work. When our food order hadn't arrived after a 50 minute wait we asked a waitress what was happening. She moved away and called the kitchen. It was obvious from what we could see and hear that something was wrong. She didn't speak to us but disappeared back into the Inn. It took a further 15 minutes for our food to start arriving. When the first 2 of our meals were delivered they came without cutlery. We asked the server to bring some. She then went and cleared tables. When the rest of our food was delivered we asked for cutlery again. Nothing came so we had to go and get the cutlery.I really can't recommend anyone eating at the Dragon.

This was our first visit under the new guidelines. All seating is outside, and rightly so. It is table service only using an app which is new for the Dragon although the menu still seems to have enough on it to suit everyone. The food was just as delicious as before, yes we had to wait a little longer than normal but those who know the dragon will appreciate that the distance from inside to the far end of the garden where the seating is, is quite a long way. To complain about the time taken to get food is just selfish. To expect normal service whilst a business it trying to work with new processes, systems and regulations is ridiculous.I think the team are doing a great job at trying to get back to some sense of normality.

Myself and my partner visited The Dragon Inn today and left truly disappointed by our experience in every way. This was our first outing since Covid-19 and was hoping for it to be enjoyable- unfortunately it wasn’t.We arrived and was seated at our table. The table was covered in salt and the chairs covered in chips from the previous table occupants. With Covid-19, this is something that made me anxious to start with and throughout. There were no ‘staff’ available for me to speak to bar young children who I would guess at being 7 and 14 at the very most. I didn’t deem this as being appropriate to complain to a child regarding cleanliness of our table. When ‘staff’ were serving food, masks were not worn properly and didn’t seal the nose as directed. Staff were taking their masks on and off and went from their chins to their mouths but never over their nose sealed. We ordered 2 drinks that arrived over half an hour after we placed the order and had to chase a staff member for this. Our food (2 panini’s) arrived over a hour after order was placed. Something that was advertised as a tuna and red onion melt was very disappointing as the cheese wasn’t melted. My partners steak panini was also cold. Both panini’s were advertised as having crisps with them, neither came with them. Before our food had arrived, we ordered another 2 drinks. 30 minuets later, we had not received any drinks and I asked a young girl, front of house, to cancel and gain a refund. I haven’t received the refund from these drinks nor a confirmation email as requested to confirm this. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience and one that I felt extremely unsafe. Wouldn’t recommended.

We were pleased to see the Dragon reopen for food - dining is currently in the garden where there are undercover tables in a marquee area (open sides so great mountain views) and also tables on the lawn area with large sun umbrellas. All well-spaced so had no concerns on this point.Food was delicious - burger and their wonderful chunky chips. I personally am not a fan of slates (also wondered how hygienic these are as I am not sure if they go in the dish washer) and would have preferred a plate but presentation looked good.It was their first night of opening so there were areas of service that needed improvement but gave what was hoped to be constructive comments to the staff before leaving.Menu is varied - curry, burger, salads, jacket potatoes, panini, fish and chips, steak, lasagne plus a few desserts. Pendragon chocolate tart sounded delicious.I am sure they would welcome a visit if you’re happy to eat outside. You order both meals and drinks via an app which you download when at your table and you pay via the app too - so don’t forget your specs. There is a 30p charge for this service. It was quite busy and a little congested entering/leaving but have since remembered that there is a gate from the garden so if a one-way system was in place, this would reduce the need to pass other diners in the hallway area. Loos are open and inside.Indoor dining should resume in Wales in early August so am sure it will only get busier so give it a whirl soon - hope you enjoy.

We could hear people talking in the next room quite clearly, so I suppose they could hear us. Luckily everyone was early to bed. We had booked an evening meal. Booking seems to be essential, as the restaurant was heaving. Food was definitely a mixed experience, although the parsnip crisps were fab, and the mixed pork “assiette” really very good indeed: that crackling! The fish and chips were ‘not bad’, according to my husband. Again, the manager was charming and helpful. The young staff were rushed off their feet. Breakfast was good, and ample. We stayed here for a couple of nights on a bank holiday weekend, having visited before just for lunch. We booked online which was quick and easy. The car park access is quite narrow and the streaks of paint on the walls show that some people struggle, but my car is quite big and by folding in the mirrors, I had no problem at all. There was a slight wait to check in because, with sunny bank holiday weather, the guy behind the bar was rushed off his feet and there were a few people waiting to be served ahead of us. Once we reached the bar, he quickly got someone to check us in and take us to our room which was lovely. We were on the top floor so the ceiling sloped and you have to squeeze past some supporting beams on the landing at the top of the stairs ... but that's what you get in a very old building. We have been twice for afternoon tea. This has been excellent and I would thoroughly recommend the quality. But booking was an absolute nightmare. The phone just wasn’t answered despite numerous attempts. Booking on line only allowed booking for lunch. I added a supplementary note the first time requesting afternoon tea. I happened to be in Crickhowell two days before our visit and went in to confirm it. I was told that it was fine and we could have afternoon tea. On arriving for the booking we were told that they did not serve afternoon tea on bank holidays! In fairness, however, they did prepare afternoon tea for us. Please sort the booking system out, answer the phone and acknowledge online bookings.

Visited on Tuesday (22/10) thinking that it'd be a quiet night in Crickhowell but we were wrong and the place was packed with a lovely atmosphere. We were greeted by welcoming staff who were all busy at the time we walked in but we were acknowledged and then managed to get us in for dinner. I highly recommend booking as after speaking with staff members, it does fill up rather quickly and booking will guarantee you a table. There was a wide range of draught lagers, two ales on pump and a 'Welsh Shelf' which showcased local spirits such as Brecon gin which is a must try. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the three young members of staff made us feel very welcome and not like we were being rushed at all, they were doing a tremendous job for a Tuesday night which could've been mistaken for a Friday/Saturday night as it was so busy! We leave Crickhowell on Thursday but will most definitely be back in the near future! Thank you for a lovely evening..

Have visited the restaurant on a number of occasions. Frankly, it is hit and miss and tonight was another miss. Waited ages to even place our order, only to be told 30 minutes later that it had been overlooked and it would be another 30 minutes. Asked to speak to the manager, but he / she never arrived.

There is a pub car park and some people park in the street outside. A short walk away is a large free (after 6pm) public car park. Polite pleasant attentive staff. Good quality food. Varied menu. Busy, loud but not rowdy. Separate area for people with dogs. As driving didn't really look at the beers.

So we visited The Dragon twice over a weekend. Our second visit was terrific - a beautifully-presented and tasty lunch, variously of scampi and chips, a salmon ciabatta and (mine) a ploughman’s lunch created with taste and care.

My wife and I were pleasantly surprised on eating at the Dragon Inn. So many places are more like pubs with mostly pub food. But the Dragon Inn is more a fine dining restaurant with some very good dishes. I can only say what we had and both dishes were delicious although my wife's beef pot pie was even better than my venison steak. When traveling through a country it seems that often you get the same dish in place after place but even though the pot pie is traditional and a quite common dish this was a cut above most places. Coupled with a venison dish we had a very nice evening at a very nice restaurant. In addition, the wait staff were very professional and still friendly and welcoming. A nice night out in Crickhowell.

Visiting Crickhowell, decided to try the steaks at the Dragon. We have eaten and enjoyed the food here here before, and I have stayed on fishing trips on the Usk. Good job we booked, the place was rammed at 7pm and, folks being turned away. We ordered 6oz and 8oz Rump steaks which were tasty! Chips, mushrooms etc. The pudding was hearty to say the least, we expected bread and butter style and were served Bread Pudding marmalade flavoured. Slept well. Good ale selection. Good Merlot and SB.

At time of my booking staff were very helpful. Room very comfortable for 5 in the Annexe (Room 20). Booked restaurant becuase of vegetarian options for my daughter which she really enjoyed. Fish ans chips great too. The two burger meals were ok but the cod, prawn and chorizo was overcooked, chewy and a very small meal. I explained to the waitress but she said nothing. Service was incredibly slow with just one person serving the entire room. The three of my children wanted dessert but one gave up and left with my husband. If it wasn't for the children wanting dessert I would not have waited. I had to wait a long time to sign for the bill and eventually gave up and walked to the other bar where I again mentioned the poor cod meal. Nothing was said. I repeated the complaint again in the morning upon leaving but again nothing was done. The quality of the actual produce appeared to be good for breakfast however the mushrooms were undercooked, bacon was overcooked and hard and black pudding raw in the middle. Everyone's black pudding was taking away and was 'recooked' in what seemed like cold oil as they came back oily and mushy. The lack of restaurant service spoiled our stay.

We called into this pub for a nice Gin and Tonic and a cool beer on a hot Sunday afternoon with friends. We ordered our drinks and were told that we had to have our drinks in plastic glasses as we were planning to sit in the beer garden. We said we would take care with the glasses as we would prefer to drink our drinks from glasses. The barmaid insisted we have plastic for safety reasons, we accepted this to be their policy. When we went out to the garden it was apparent that most customers had glasses and bottles. A gin and tonic , a cider and glass of wine is simply not the same from a cheap plastic glass especially at premium prices. The cider was also flat so we returned it to the bar.

Stayed here as part of a walking holiday. When we arrived our twin room had been made up as a double - the person who we spoke to was insistent that that was what we’d booked - we definitely hadn’t and we didn’t feel that the hotel was very welcoming after a day walking. They did change the beds after some discussion. The bath/shower was totally inappropriate- the bath was too small to lie in and the ceiling so low you couldn’t stand up in the shower. The girl serving breakfast was totally uninterested she didn’t explain that you needed to serve tea/coffee yourself and that you had to make your own toast with a toaster that didn’t seem to work properly. We asked for teapots to make tea in as the cups provided were like espresso cups so totally inadequate to make tea in using tea bags! Crickhowell itself is a lovely town and well worth a visit.

Came here for a decent breakfast and we were not disappointed with the food quality or the portion size however service was slow, the staff noisy and our food took a very long time to arrive. Prices were fine and the coffee was unusual, strong and bitter in a way that will not suit everyone. The building is very attractive and the rustic interior compromised with tasteless cheap additions.

Have been regular customers for years at this establishment so called in last Monday for some lunch with my husband. Sat in the garden and on receiving my meal discovered after eating half my chips a dead fly had been cooked in with them and was literally stuck to the one chip. I know there are a lot of flies about in this warm season but surely hygiene levels should be priority. Also disappointing that no longer a vegetarian option on garden menu.

We called in at the Dragon Inn for a late lunch on a weekday, lured in by the attractive exterior and presence of other diners - both good indicators of quality establishments in our experience. We were welcomed by a number of blank expressions and silence upon entering, which continued until who I assume was an experienced waitress greeted us and allocated us a table. I don’t want to dwell too much on the standard of service, as I suspect that the majority (I know at least one member of staff was new) of the waiting on staff were new and were only summer holiday staff. Everybody has to start somewhere. In regards to the food however, it was delicious. I had an open prawn sandwich on sourdough bread with sweet potato fries, and my partner the chicken caesar salad. We devoured the lot and both commented on how tasty both of our choices were. All in all we had an enjoyable afternoon, with good food at good prices, although a bit of air con wouldn’t have gone a miss!

On the spur of the moment, we decided to find somewhere to have lunch. 'The Dragon' was recommended by Alex, the proprietor of Riverside Caravan Park. We took his advice and we're glad we did. I had the Open Prawn Cocktail on sour dough bread with home-made coleslaw and salad. The parsnip crisps were a welcome addition. My husband had Brie and Bacon on Ciabatta, with the garnish as before. We had a window seat and although there were a few Hooray Henrys at the bar, it was a good atmosphere. You could tell the red haired waiter and waitresses had been well trained.
