Dragon and Phoenix in St. Helens

Still remains my favourite 5 years on from the original review! Plus I love the fish tank. Fantastic food - one of the best Chinese meals I've had.

Arrived and was seated straight away. Lovely starters hot and fresh. Mains arrived hot and delicious. Would recommend. Staff friendly and nothing too much bother. Prised well and good portions.

Friendly service in a comfortable setting. Wide choice of options on menu , had the prawn dumplings , beef curry and egg fried rice which was excellent . Would definitely come back .

This is our go to Chinese and we’ll worth the drive. They cater for us vegans and we have worked our way through everything on the “mock meat menu”. Everything has always been delicious and they make the sweetcorn soup suitable for us and it’s incredibly tasty. The staff are super friendly and helpful and it’s always a pleasure to visit; reasonably priced too. See you soon!

Just had a wonderful takaway from the Dragon and Phoenix in Newton-le-willows. Ruby, the owner is so pleasant. We ordered a takaway and the food was delicious and piping hot. We've had other chinese takeouts but the Dragon and Phoenix win hands down on flavour and value.

We walked in without a reservation and they had plenty of room. The food was delicious and served hot, the staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. The prices were reasonable and it looked a good place for parties and special occasions.

The wine was very reasonably priced but the highlight was definitely the service; really friendly and welcoming. We asked the owner about the rating, she explained everything and, from our point of view, we’ll be back soon. Really great evening. Thanks.

Dont know where to start, noodles were rock hard, the prawns still.looked alive,everything came out of the microwave. The rice was off. Best thing about the place was the fish tank which would probably tasted better.

Not the first Valentine’s Day meal we have had here over the years and it was as good as ever. Never disappoints, the food is the best Chinese we have eaten anywhere and that includes Liverpool and Manchester China towns. Absolutely amazing 😀

Great place to eat in Newton Le Willows - Ruby and Alan are great hosts and the food is always hot, fresh and full of taste and flavour The restaurant and staff are always spotlessly clean We have been coming here for the 7yrs we’ve lived in the village and it’s the best Chinese restaurant in the area

This place has gone downhill big time. In November 2022 it was awarded a Zero food hygiene score avoid

We booked late in the day and so pleased we did. The staff are so friendly and the food was amazing, very tasty and exactly what we all wanted. We had a great meal for my husbands birthday and he was made up with his Birds Nest!!! Won’t hesitate to go back. Thanks very much.

I visit this evening for a meal with my wife, and the whilst food and service are very decent, in my opinion the prices are a bit too high for the kind of food that it is, the food is basically dine in British Chinese takeaway food, none the less we enjoyed what we had. The decor, lighting and menus need bringing into the 20th century, but all of the above said the place does have a quirky charm about it and I think it’s definitely family run so I’m all for supporting these kinds of places. I can’t help but compare it to the slick establishments in the locally area naming no names. So I hope they do give the place a maker over and just jazz the place up a bit.

Lovely, quaint, quiet restaurant on the high street. Wonderful service, great selection of dishes and reasonably priced! Make sure you book at weekend? Just because its such a small (but cosy) restaurant.

This is the best Chinese in the North West. I've visited many. The beef dumplings are my favourite. The crispy chilli beef is also my favourite. The chicken and beef satay skewers...you get the picture. The salt and pepper chips are really good too.

Excellent food and service tonight, couldn't fault it

Absolutely disgusting service from the lady. However the young man was amazing he did everything he could to make our time enjoyable. The food was plain and bland. For the price of £71 isn't worth the price and alot nicer places around with more welcoming services. From the minute I sat down I new we should of left due to the women's body language and attitude towards customers.

Four of us hoped to enjoy a meal at the Dragon and Phoenix but we were disappointed with the service.Our starters arrived at different times instead of being served all at the same time.The soups were enjoyable, the ribs was more like a main course and the scallops was very expensive at £8 and not enjoyable, only 2 servedand one could only be part eaten .The 2 rice containers were put on the table a good ten minutes before the main meals were served and again arrived at different times,the rice was almost cold.

We have made this one of our regular events. The food is really tasty,to the point that nothing tastes the same. A culunary experience every time. The staff is really friendly and helpful. Toilets are a small affair so sadly no room for wheelchairs or baby changing.

Wonderful food and service. Ten of us all had different meals and all were very happy. The starters were brilliant and the mains were large and very tasty. The prices were very reasonable. It was a great evening and a fantastic change from a curry.

Fantastic food with a warm welcome whilst waiting for takeaway. As Saturdays a bit busy would pre-book so no disappointment.

Seems average to me .I wouldn't go again but if you want a sit down Chinese there's no other .It's not terrible but not blown away .

Was passing this place tonight and thought we would try it. Food was OK, nothing special but by no means bad. However the price was shocking. Charged 4 pounds each extra for rice ( main meal was 16 quid) ?? Not surprised it only had 3 other customers Will definitely not be returning sorry.

The food was nice... but I think they over charge for there Dim Sum and you don't get much 4 of us got it we had 1 prawn toast each a rib each 2 chicken wings a spring roll each and a spoon of seaweed each they charge 9 quid a head thought that was too pricy for what u get I have tried it there now I wouldn't go back

The food has always been fabulous here and still is. The reason it doesn't get full 5 stars is due to no pancake course with the banquet. That was a shame and the price of them really means there should be. Other than that yummy food.

First time trying this restaurant as a takeaway treat due to current COVID only collection available. Beautiful fish tank on entrance with guidance for sanitising hands 👏 given time to collect alone 👏 staff friendly and welcoming. Bar present although not serving seemed adequately provided selection - for the future of course. Pleasantly surprised with quantity and quality of food and must admit very tasty and 5 of your 5 a day cooked within food. Overall, definately can’t wait to try other dishes on the menu.

Very poor 😢 we spent all most 30 pound and asked for special fried rice and was not that a tall and ribs we got 4 and was tastless .. we have sat in before and was amazing and were good with little ones

Hadn't been for some time with the pandemic and got a take away this weekend. After all the other delivered takeaways from other places I've had over the last few months it made me appreciate how good this place is. Was well worth the drive.

I've been coming here all my life, never had a bad meal. In fact the food is always perfect. Two meals they do are life changing. Salt and chilli sui mai, and the crispy apple and mango pork.The staff are always lovely and extremely accommodating, weather its making a dish vegan or just asking for no mushrooms, everything is cooked fresh. 10/10

Awful food, poo sack in the prawns, scallops overpowered by thick gluons teriyaki sauce. Salt and pepper squid that salty I will be drinking water for week. Staff hovering by table, felt rushed!Shame as I have attended a few times and it has been fine. Shocking service, raised concerns with staff member, was dismissed and basically called a liar. Very very disappointed, will never attend again.

The food was great as always, however, they forgot an entire corse, they got a main wrong for one of our party. Great service but need better communication in the restaurant. If it doesn’t improve we may have to consider an alternative venue moving forward.

First takeaway for a very long time and it was delicious. We had chicken & cheese spring rolls, fillet steak in Cantonese sauce, egg fried rice & Dragon & Phoenix special chow mein. Thank you 👍

Lovely staff great food great atmosphere

From the outside this restaurant looks a little tired and it's not much different inside, but don't let this put you off, the food was excellent, we had the hot & sour soup & crispy seaweed, main half a crispy duck perfectly cooked with plenty of ho sin sauce, Crispy chilli chicken, salt/pepper chips, Singapore vermachilli, all first class, not forgetting the staff who were very attentive and always checked we were happy with food, we had a nice bottle of yellow label woof-blast Chardonnay, with a large bottle sparkling water all for under £60.00 which I think is good value for money! So please try this place out you will not be disappointed with the food or the service:)

We use this for take out a few times a month. Reasonable prices but nit the cheapest. Great food though Eating in is a great experience as well if you have the time.

Was recommended to try out this long standing traditional Chinese Restaurant on the High Street whilst venturing through Newton-le-Willows.The service was attentive, friendly and we got a table without any reservation.The food we ordered was traditional chinese food from the menu, decent prices and the food was served piping hot and flavoursome.The ambiance was ok, the tables were spaced out enough to give you just that bit of privacy.I noticed it has a separate section for take-away orders and a bar which was good as it doesn't hinder the restaurant ambiance.The place is closed on Tuesdays but is open5.pm - 11.pm every day apart from Friday's and Saturdays when it stays open till 12.am.On Sundays its open 4.pm - 10.pm.Would highly recommend if your in the area and fancy traditional chinese cruisene, cooked fresh so be prepared to wait.

Went to the restaurant under neighbour recommendation, totally satisfied. It’s like a little gem in the high street.My wife ordered the crispy beef from the chef’s speciality, it’s the best one we have ever tried. You could tell it was freshly prepared.I had crispy duck with pancakes and the meat was full of flavour.Excellent value with two glasses of wine.Lovely, welcoming staff and will definitely return again and recommend to others.

Went for a birthday meal, and it was awful. Fish cakes had the consistency of an ice hockey puck and the flavour of rubber. Wife ordered the chefs special chicken... boiled chicken with no flavour. Food arrived in a staggered formation so some had finished food before others got it or it would be cold. Veg in the meals were either frozen cubes or the chef spends far too much time chopping? The decor is of a 70’s restaurant, and slightly dirty. Will not be visiting again.

I have regularly been coming to this restaurant for many years; first as a child with my parents and now I bring my children. Really friendly atmosphere and child friendly. Fantastic vegetarian and vegan food. I hope to keep coming here for many years to come.

Used to come here often years ago.. decided to re-visit and just go for the teatime special set menu.. which we had to ask for.. very disappointed with what we got.. the soup was tasteless.. we paid extra for aromatic duck which was good.. the main was spot the meat and a plate of onions with sauce over.. sauce was tasty.. then for dessert ice cream (one scoop) with a battered pineapple ring between us.. we left feeling disappointed as definately not good value for money at all.. could have had better food elsewhere for the £16.50 each we paid.. will not be going back !!

Very friendly, good service, lovely food.

I’ve been a few times this year and forgotten to leave a review - sorry! We are usually a family of six diners - 3 vegans and 3 vegetarians. They do fake chicken which is amazing and do the soup for us vegans egg free and it’s delicious. I’ve worked my way through the vegan menu and enjoyed everything and so have my family. The service is excellent too, the staff are friendly and welcoming and the service is prompt. We will keep going back!

Fantastic family restaurant that offers a fab range of skillfully crafted Dim sum, even when we get takeaway we always go to The Dragon & Phoenix as the standard is so much better. The crispy duck we had last time we visited was some of the best I can remember ever having, the manager told us it had been slowly cooked for 3 hours, and you could tell. Very friendly, and great food. One of our favourite places to eat out locally.

Ordered food to go. The place was filthy so was already off to a bad start. Once we got home and plated up the food you could tell from the get go that it was microwaved and very poor in quality. Chicken chow mein was slimey and cold, veggie spring rolls were cold and hard. It didn't taste/smell or look fresh or appetising. To top it all off it was really expensive! Wouldn't go back here. The staff were really friendly though :)

Again, another fantastic meal at Dragon and Phoenix. Amazing, fresh food and the best crispy duck I have ever had. 5* service as always. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody - the best Chinese I’ve ever had, bar none!

Polite, friendly staff and good food make this a nice restaurant up eat at. The four course set menu was reasonable and the drinks were not expensive.

After visiting Liverpool for the day we got off the train at Newton le willows. We arrived in Newton earlier than planned as with numerous train strikes we didn’t eat in Liverpool and just wanted to get nearer home. We stumbled upon this place after walking down the high street from the train. Lovely little place, old fashioned in decor but we liked that. Food yummy and very good service. Will definitely visit again and probably return with our children. The place was busy but they managed to get us a table. All food passing looked delicious too.

Expensive,sticky carpets, microwaved warm up food no longer Authentic Chinese food here. Extra long wait between courses as there's only yourselves in the place on a Friday evening you have to ask yourself why this is such a shame come on this place should be booked up so far in advance for a wee little town !

I was outside of iceland when I seen the lady that owns this restaurant with a trolley load of chinese starters thought nothing of it. I was invited to go out for a family meal here a few days after which I have been going to on and off for 30 years but it went very down hill recently within the last 12 months its has had a really basic renovation that includes very poorly papered wallpaper and a clean to the toilets. The food was ultra slow for the banquet the chicken was raw inside pink the sharing starters you guessed it were cheap super market bought when a chinese has to purchase its food from a supermarket you know they are doing terrible and there is only yourselves in the restaurant the carpets are very dirty the toilets are not great if you can fit through the extra narrow doorway ! The taps are manky you certainly do not want to touch them the liquid soap is watered down there are no paper towels. The taste and quality from a £200 pounds meal for us with drinks is terrible for the one and only chinese on the high street if they spent money on this place and brought in a good chef it would be like it was 25 years ago absolutely booming ! Sadly wont be returning here the kirkfield across the road has just reopened and its very very nice a little pricey but great food,service and everything you want.

We have been going there for 4 years now absolutely amazing, food is always lovely and fresh and so tasty. The staff really care and give an amazing service. Was my father in law s 70th birthday today and they made him feel so special had balloons on the table and brought his cake out with a birthday song. Made his night. Thank you guys !!!!

Went in here and the staff were sort of helpful telling us everything is cooked in sesame oil. Which is no good for my wife with her nut allergy. In this day and age come on everyone knows about this. We had to walk out after paying for an expensive beverage which you don't mind when you have actually had food. Get in 2018

Excellent service and delicious food.

After being a regular visitor here over 20 years ago I went back for a nostalgic visit ... I'm not sure what I was expecting but the place hadn't changed much, the decor was basic and rustic but not necessarily shabby, in fairness I'm more interested in the food so the decor is incidental. The food was unfortunately just OK, nothing to write home about but nothing dire either. Average is the best I can say but hey ho it was nice to have a change of scenery.

Excellent food and brilliant atmosphere. Staff are super friendly. Can't recommend highly enough. We will be back to work our way through the menu.
