Just a great place with a twist on food, all served in a skillet with a Canadian theme. Well worth a visit for something simple but excellent.

They used to have the best chicken burger (before 2024). They recently changed menu and the chicken burger changed. I’m very sad about it. Disappointed.

Dropped in for a coffee and hopefully a scone or cake, but was surprised to find that they don't offer any baking at all. My latte was very average, but small and overpriced, and although friendly, service was slow and there was little atmosphere.

£3.50 for a coffee and had to use the venues portaloo ... no proper toilets not good enough. Also typical edinburgh hospitality , happy for you spend money but not get comfortable. Coffee was decent.

I have waited such a long time to go here and was bitterly disappointed. I don't know if it was because we went an hour before closing but other than one female member of staff the rest couldn't be bothered helping and within minutes of arriving I actually thought I don't feel welcome here. My partner got the Montreal cheesesteak and it was pathetic, 4 tiny bits of steak, 4! I got the world famous beef dip and it wasn't nice. We eat out a lot, we aren't fussy eaters but this is the worst place I have ever eaten and it's not cheap. I should have said when I was there but the staff were so uninterested avoiding eye contact because it was nearly home time I thought what's the point. There are much nicer places to eat in Queensferry than here. Absolutely gutted, the make their social media posts look amazing but was a big disappointment.

My favourite food spot in the central belt - the best cheesesteak & poutine in Scotland by a country mile, had the pleasure of being served by Matthew who was lovely but the staff in general were all no nice and upbeat that the atmosphere was incredible.

Been here a few times since moving to the area - twice for breakfast and for lunch. Such a great little place! Staff are so friendly and helpful. Food is delicious, always busy when I’ve been which tells a lot - highly recommended! Free parking No toilets on premises

One of our favourite places to have a filling breakfast, throw in a coffee and a juice and its just perfect. The choice to sit inside or outside (overhead heaters in use) makes it ideal for all year round. I definitely recommend the breakfast skillets with the Mexi being a personal favourite.

When it's windy the heaters outside do very little. I'd love to see some sort of windbreak or hoarding at least trying to keep the wind out!

Second visit to this fantastic little restaurant. The food is freshly prepared in the open kitchen, and it comes out piping hot and very tasty. First time trying Poutine today, and yes we will be having it again. Lovely meal and even nicer staff.

Ordered food for takeout, got samurai showdown, carne and the goat. Samurai showdown was amazing, carne and goat were top class too. Young man serving, believe he said his name was Liam, was excellent, very friendly. Will definitely recommend others visit and I will be back myself.

Having been to the Edinburgh Central location during COVID and been disappointed we gave the Queensferry flagship a try. Food and service amazing. GOAT burger was very good, massively appreciate it being dog friendly also!!!

Very friendly helpful staff, we only had coffee and a poutine, highly recommend a poutine, my partner (from Stockport) immediately said it looked like proper Manchester gravy so happily picked at my portion!

Great little spot hidden away down in South Queensferry. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Good range of food on the menu, which arrived quickly. The food was very nice. The seating area is outside, but is covered and the day we visited it was blowy and wet, the heaters were on and it was very pleasant.

Food was extremely dry, £12 for a toastie Very over priced. Cheese on chips was not even melted. Been a few times now just to make sure it a one of bad experience but unfortunately this will be the last time.

Great food and comfortable environment, never had a bad experience here would always recommend for breakfast. Outdoor seating is covered with heaters.

1st thing, no toilets in the building, not sure why they're allowed to operate a restaurant, so before eating you have to go outside (in the rain), unlock a portacabin, & then touch all the outdoor handles again to go back in, so very unhygienic to then be holding your burger. 2nd they DON'T take cash... I'll let that sink in.. Who in the world doesn't take cash?? It's 2024.. Gobsmacked with that one. Food itself was pretty good and service was ok, staff were very friendly and helpful. I certainly won't be back due to the owners complete disregard for hygiene & their utter disdain for cash paying customers.

Brilliant breakfast. It defeated my husband It was a bit chilly sitting there though.

We enjoyed a late lunch here. The poutine is terrific. I loved my maple bacon version and my husband the haggis variety. Always appreciate somewhere that's happy to accommodate my dog. He thoroughly enjoyed his foggy smash burger.

Place was so busy and so understaffed, asked for various things and was advised they were to busy, service wasnt great as we didnt have any cutlery/napkins and wasnt made aware that they didnt accept cash upon arrival when making payment.

My partner had visited a few times and couldn't wait to take me. I was not disappointed, the food was so good. I had one of the burgers and he had the buffalo sandwich both were very tasty. We also got two milkshakes, nice and thick American style ones, lovely but can be a job to drink. He got the maple poutine he said tasted good not too sweet. I had the haggis poutine which worked so well together the spices from the haggis gave an extra dimension to it. I highly recommend it. Can't wait to go back and take our kid along with us.

Service was amazing. Burger were tasty and juicy and the Poutine is the real deal, I say this as a Quebecer. Dog friendly , quick to get your food and very tasty coffee. Beautiful area. Can’t recommend more

We came from Dundee the special, but they had run out the day before. No mention of this on social media. We selected alternative burgers, which were nice.

Not a lot of healthy options. Food tasted good, but a bit expensive for what it was. Felt like the waitress was keen for us to leave quickly once we were finished eating.

Seriously one of the best full breakfasts in the UK. Been fed up with food and restaurants in general since lockdown. But have to say this is one worth getting in the car for. Thought they were a bit mad looking for reservations but it’s busy, staff are great. Food is fantastic.

A little bit of Canada on the coast of Scotland. One may say the Nova Nova Scotia..Great tasting food at reasonable prices. Inside has a cafe vibe, there is also a nice outdoor area for the better weather.

Tried to book on the phone but someone hung up on my husband so we booked a table via the app. Got completely ignored when we arrived by the male working outside today at 1615 and eventually show to our table by a female member of staff who was working outside. Food came really quickly and was nice but the portion sizes are really small, got a large poutine, chimichurri fries, a milkshake and a can of juice for just under £30 and came away from the meal feeling hungry and ripped off. The food was nice but not worth the money and the staff were really miserable.

We arrived at port Edgar after a boat ride and there isn't a great deal to choose from to eat that is elderly friendly. We found DOWN THE HATCH and it was great it's run by a lot of young people who are very efficient and friendly and ready to help no matter what you want. xx

First time, found it after a morning walk. Didn't realise the need to book, but they found a table for us. We will definitely return.

When we arrived the waitress said you should have booked a table before coming in case it was busy in a rude manner. We looked around and it was clearly quiet then she overed us two tables to which we were happy with 1 just in case it got busy for them. When we asked for the bill the waitress asked us cash or card to which we replied card. We were two families so we asked to split the bill in two equally to which we were told they could not do. It had to be one card payment for the whole bill. Not sure if this was due to the 20p transaction fee needing to be paid twice haha, but i honestly could not get my head around it. Not really one to leave bad reviews but the two scenarios above could have been very easily avoided by the staff but were clearly not willing to go out their way to do so. Could not fault the food at all, nothing special, but nothing to fault.

Mix up with booking after we confirmed twice and was unable to let us pay individually. Menu looked good but we left.

First time on Saturday. Heard great things and read good reviews unfortunately the few less good seem the most accurate based on my first visit. Firstly we booked easily and opted to sit inside as it was breakfast and quite cold outside. The restaurant door was constantly open and i kept jacket on throughout it was freezing inside. We were told we had one hour and there was no toilets in the building but a short walk away. The staff were pleasant enough but the price for the food was high for the quality of most of the ingredients. I found the food at my local greasy spoon at half the price better cooked and better quality. Even the toast was not toasted. Haggis worst i have ever had. That is not Haggis. Link Sausage, poor quality and not evenly browned. Hash browns were greasy. All Just like cheap supermarket fayre Tea was extra. £3 ! Handed a mug of hot water and a tea bag. We were hoping for good food based on the high reviews marks but all things taken into consideration was not a great experience. I dont think this is close to Canadian food. Just disappointed really.

Brilliant food. Daily specials, amazing milkshakes. Lovely location with beautiful views of the 3 bridges. Only downside is no on site toilets although puplic toilets aren't far away.

Went to down the hatch this morning and was trying to enjoy my breakfast when a customer kick off about coffee I mean come on just sit down and enjoy your food. Other than his swearing at a polite member of staff it was great I would love to give more that a five star but i really really enjoyed the food and hospitality Hopefully grumpy wont be back to disrupt breakfast again

Great place for breakfast and massive portions if you are really hungry. Booking almost always necessary which can be a pain if you fancy and impromptu.

My first time at Down the Hatch… most certainly won’t be my last. Awesome breakfast.

I'd heard some stories of this place being good so decided to give it a try. As an added bonus we were able to sit inside with the dog. The food was even better than I expected and the staff were good for recommendations on what to get and portion sizes. Very dog friendly, I'll definitely be back.
