Douro Valley in Castle Point

A belated Valentine's Day dinner, we were made very welcome from start to finish. The staff were very friendly and didn't rush us between courses - nothing worse than being chivvied along to get you out, this certainly wasn't the case here. Yes, the prices may put some off of coming here, but I can honestly say that it was money well spent, and the environment was perfect for a couples meal, although we sat next to a family and they seemed to enjoy themselves too. I think this is a venue for all occasions and the food was exquisite; all of our courses were piping hot, and the flavours were outstanding. The portion sizes were set for comfortably full, rather than needing to have something because you're still hungry. For a good meal out, I would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant and I already have plans to return!!

We walked in at our allotted time. Stood for a couple of minutes while being ignored by staff busying themselves with making up tables etc. Waved toward a table in the corner. Not auspicious but ok. Drinks order taken, we just opted for a litre (should have made more than 1 and a half glasses each of white sangria. Which consisted of some chopped apple and orange some white wine not chilled and Ice. Was a bit underwhelming really. We were not really feeling the love at this point. We had some olives and bread and butter. The butter was the pre packed single portion variety. No oil or vinegar etc. We ordered mains. My partner had the seafood stew special which was served with some rather lifeless bread, but the stew itself was excellent. I had a mixed meat skewer with some extra king prawn. Was asked if I wanted hot piri piri which I did. It came up with a rather disappointing salad a little equally disappointing rice, and some excellent if sparse fried potatoes. The prawns turned up 5 minutes later. The meat was good (the piece of steak was tough and chewy but flavourful, though the piri piri was all but absent. I think with the prawns the cost was around £25. The prawns were over salted We both had a dessert which was OK. A coffee and a Portuguese take on Amaretto ( which was excellent). By this time and having had to fight to get the attention of the lad laying up tables in order to order, and failing we were served by a lady who was pleasant and attentive. Overall for £120 with a tip, for 2 it was underwhelming, it may just have been that night after all the Christmas madness. We will give it another go soon and see how it is. But for now, it’s average service and despite the excellent fish stew. Average food.

Was a fantastic meal very welcoming and a nice atmosphere a bit pricey but very good portion size, will definitely be going back.

Nice relaxed atmosphere and good service. Had the scallops to start which was quite a small portion however tasted nice! The tapas dishes we had were amazing, would definitely return!

This restaurant well deserves its high ranking. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced, while the suggestion of 2-3 "tapas" per person was exactly right for us - the garlicky king prawns were a highlight, but it was all tasty. The restaurant makes some concessions to where it is (see photo), with some fairly standard bar offerings, but the house wine was very drinkable and the staff were excellent, attentive and discreet at the same time. Although our table was at 9 pm and we were easily the last to leave, they didn't put any pressure on us to go, even though they must have been longing to press the ejector seat button. Highly recommended.

Yet another fabulous evening spent in this amazing local family restaurant. They never fail to deliver exceptional portuguese food and service at reasonable prices. Great cocktails, too ! Booked for my wifes Birthday two big partys going on and we are in the middle pretty average meal couldn't wait to get out was like eating on a Tube Train during rush hour ! Should have taken bookings for the two large partys only Not for me very disappointed after all the good reviews

Rocked up, un-annouced and un-booked on a Wednesday evening. Turns out that I was lucky to get a table, they were pretty busy. My meal was great, mussels, Dover Sole and tart. Servce exemplary and smiley. Highly recommended.

First time at the Douro Valley but it won't be the last, we were recommended and I have to say that the food was superb, we mainly ate from the fixed price menu and there was sufficient choice to satisfy us.The staff and surroundings were really nice and nothing was too much trouble, would thoroughly recommend.

Finally tried this restaurant and glad we did , the friendly attentive staff were very welcoming the food was great after looking at the vast menu decided to have the tapas 6 dishes all tasty and reasonably priced . Booked for next week as enjoyed so much .

I had a takeaway from Douro Valley at the end of July for my birthday and was very impressed with the food, including the presentation of it. The seafood paella was was so tasty. Definitely will be back again!

Went here on 5th August on my birthday. There were 7 of us and we all had the set 3 course meal. The starters was very nice and plentiful. The main we had meat and fish scewers. The dessert was so yummy. The staff had full masks they were so good with distancing. In all we had a fabby night and I had a lovely birthday We are definitely going again

This restaurant is a great place to try something different, the food is cooked really well and presentation has been paid to each plate leaving the kitchenThe staff are courteous and friendly, the menu is small but that is good meaning they can produce fresh meals each time, the paella is flavoursome and full of fresh ingredients.

Great meal, wine and service! Had the set 3 course menu for £20 a head and could not fault it. Lily bless her does all the receptionist duties plus waitressing and does a superb job, definitely be going back again, well done keep up the good work all!

Went for dinner to celebrate hubby's birthday with our in laws. The restaurant was quiet but this did not detracted from the quality of the service or the food. Starters of calamari were crisp and calamari soft. I am lactose intolerant so chef made a seperate batter for me. Followed by 3 mixed meat skewers and one mixed fish skewer. All beautifully cooked and delicious. Two soft chocolate cake desserts. Lovely. Price very acceptable too. Great service, good food and does not break the bank. (we chose from the set menu)

Came across this restaurant on a Friday night and it was buzzing. The food was amazing! We thought the starters was the best but then came our steaks and they were to die for, so nice and tender! The staff were very attentive and polite always checking to see if everything was ok but not over the top. Wanted to booking for New Years eve but they’re already fully booked. Will definitely be returning.

After a fantastic birthday throughout the day we went here for my birthday dinner.After being to the restaurant before as was impressed we thought right choice...wrong.Starters was lovely..service was rude..t bone steak the worst ever had...absolutely unedible.Wanted to explain to waitress but she had her back to me talking to a regular customer ..about another regular being sick etc obviously not the thing you want to hear in this environment...over 10mins so no I didnt want anything else when my partner was finished!!!!Will not be going back there were empty tables and for a Friday before Christmas ....I now know why really downhill shame in this day and age.

I have been to Douro valley so many times that I’ve probably tried the whole menu by now. Always amazing food, from the meats to the fish it’s always delicious. Have been there with my partner and have been with a big group and couldn’t say one bad thing each time. Really nice people and always helpful, can’t wait to return :)

Managed to get a table without a booking but restaurant was busy. Had very good steak meal and good quality house red wine. Steak cooked as I requested and tender. Service good so no complaints. Would go back there again.

Visited this evening with scollops for starters that unfortunately had lots of gritty bits and no taste then had my mains T bone steak that again was very bland and very tough not a good night for the cheif

Had a lovely meal here tonight from the set menu...Highly recommend this restaurant. Nearly always holiday in Portugal and felt like we were back on holiday. Food excellent and waitress was as well. Wish this restaurant had another in Benfleet as I'm sure it would do really well and compare favourably with the likes of Aspera and Malaya.

Been twice now and can’t fault it.. I travel from London as most of my family live in Essex .. my niece first recommended the restaurant and we came in May and really enjoyed the food and service . Returned again for a family celebration.. highly recommend . Will return before year out for sure .

When I went here I was greeted by friendly staff. When I sat down the staff were fast at taking orders and the food came out quite quick and was very hot. The quiet music makes the place have a good atmosphere

Popped in for a spontaneous dinner one evening. Service was quick and friendly and the food was good quality. Will go again.

This was the first time my husband and I had been here - it was for my birthday with the family - a party of 10 including two children aged 10 and 8. We couldn't have chosen a better venue. The food was superb - loads to choose from and the children were able to pick dishes they liked from the Tapas which made life easier. Service was excellent - very attentive without being too full on which is a delicate balance in my opinion. Prices were very reasonable and portions more than adequate. Can't wait until the next tiime!

Fantastic meal here. Took my dad for an early Father’s Day meal on a Wednesday evening and he absolutely loved it. Great service and very friendly staff. Good choice of food on menu. Set menu in the week is very generous. All 3 courses very tasty - so impressed! We will 100% return.

They didn't let me down. Excellent food, simply excellent. This has to rank as one of my favourite places to eat. Quite small, which is nice. Well furnished with comfortable seats and superb service.

Even though we live local we hadn’t ever tried Douro valley for some reason but finally thought we’d give it a go! Called late on a Saturday and they managed to get us in last minute. Staff friendly. I had variety of tapas and partner had the peri peri chicken skewer with sides. Really lovely food. Big portions! The prawns were a favourite, would just have them and rice next time or try the paella! Only tiny criticism I did ask if could have fish paella for one but this was not possible only the vegetable. However definitely can’t wait to go back and try more! Thank you :)

We had our first visit this evening and loved every minute, it is a family run restaurant, the staff are very welcoming and efficient, food is fantastic.

I work from home most Fridays and if I have an afternoon free of meetings I love to treat the wife and come to Douro Valley for lunch - we like to choose the Meze style small plates because their garlic prawns are literally to die for so we often end up ordering multiple portions.

First visit to Douro Valley High Road Canvey Island, and what a pleasure. Really good food, we had the chicken and pork skewers, it was lovely. We had a bottle of Douro red wine which was superb, reasonable prices too. 1 drawback is no parking, but there are car parks nearby. We will be visiting again soon.

This is probably the best restaurant in Essex let alone Canvey! The food is always excellent. The staff polite, and the prices suit everyone's pocket!!

This is one of our favourite restaurants which we visit fairly regularly. We recently returned from a trip to Portugal and paid the Douro Valley a visit. The food is as good as we had in Portugal; authentic, tasty and plentiful. We went again with two friends on a very busy Saturday evening and the service was faultless.

I last visited this restaurant in 2016, and I am pleased to say, the experience was even better than last time. We were a family of 8 with a 5.30p[m booking. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was tasty, plentiful and varied. My partner and I couldn't finish the excellent MISTA paella, so the leftover was boxed up and eaten the next day. We all enjoyed our meals, and the Portuguese custard tart was superb as was the Portuguese almond flavored trifle.

What to write -the staff are absolutely fantastic will cater to your every need nothing seems to much, food is excellent and the service is fantastic highly recommend the paella 🥘

What can I say, this place is a real gem. This wasn’t our first visit and again we had a perfect evening. Food was amazing and not a scrap left on our plates. I’m going on holiday soon and trying to lose a bit of weight, so asked for some of my dishes to come without any dressing, oil or butter. They were more than happy to oblige and were very helpful. Waiting stall very friendly and nothing was too much for them even thought they were extremely busy. Highly recommend.

The restaurant was very busy so we were taken to our table straight away. the menu is quite large with a good selection of meals. my starter ... sardines cooked in that Portuguese way was a big reminder of summer holidays on the Algarve. all the dishes ordered were good . The service was good and the prices were reasonable. We will be going again soon.

The staff could have smiled a little I know it was fairly busy it did make me feel uncomfortable at times. There is a lot to choose from on the menu the prawns are excellent the best part of the dining experience.

We were looking for a restaurant on canvey and came across this one. Never been in it before and didn't know anyone who had mentioned eating there.

Visited in October as a party of 15, we were requested to preorder our meals, due to the number of people in the party to ensure that they were able to provide what we required.

Been wanting to come here for a while now and I’m so glad I did! The whole experience was wonderful, nice welcoming staff very attentive but not over the top and the food was delicious. Couldn’t fault the food at all very tasty and well presented! We will be back!!

We were passing this restaurant and thought that we would try it as we have never been there before. The food and wine was excellent and we will be visiting again.

High expectations for this Portuguese restaurant, however on the whole it was pretty average. Pleasant atmosphere and cosy seating but overall the experience left me wanting just that little more. The food in general was O.K. but some additional cooking on the products would have resulted in a better presentation and taste. Our friends love this restaurant but myself not so smitten.

Just got back from a meal here tonight. We had the piri piri prawns to start. Then I had salted cod for main and my partner had the mixed grill. Can’t fault the food or staff. It was all brilliant. Will definitely be back.

So glad that Douro has opened again. I don't get to visit often but I love eating here with the great food, Fado in the background and a bica to finish, a taste of Portugal on Canvey. The food is very varied with some wonderful Portuguese dishes and great wine with good, friendly service.

Went for a birthday meal, excellent food and service, ordered from set menu. Fantastic variety of different foods. Ordered fish skewers, lamb and clams and veggie paella. Would definitely return for a second visit.

a birthday celebration meal with office colleagues . Menu has a wide choice of foods with many special Portuguese dishes. 4 of us selected from the set menu which we thought was excellent value for money at approx. £ 21. two of us chose from the a la carte menu.There were four other lots of diners that evening and the staff was very good and not intrusive. the ambiance of the restaurant was very nice with background music playing. the Douro wines on offer where smooth and very enjoyable. We all enjoyed our choice of starters and mains very much, the almond tart dessert was a little difficult to eat and it was a shame that we did not have the full selection of desserts available

A friend & I visited Duoro Valley on the off chance. We had paella for 2 and it was excellent. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We will be going back for the tapas!!

The staff were really welcoming. We should have got advice on what to order, as we ordered food that was all quite seafood and fish related as it was what we liked but didn’t think of it all being served together. The individual dishes were really tasty and lovely, although it all became a bit too salty and fishy and rich for us. Our fault though and we know for next time. We want to go back to try it again and order some different dishes and actually think about what we select next time.

Had a lovely meal here yesterday with two locals who didn’t even know it was there! Ordered lots of different tapas dishes and all were delicious, accompanied with some of the nicest Portuguese wine I’ve ever had. Highly recommend a visit!

Went to Douro Valley tonight for the first time with some friends and I can only say will definitely go back! The whole experience was nice and easy, from booking the table to the staff always helpful, knowledgeable and with a smile on their face, from the great ambient music to the cleanliness, from the variety of dishes to suit any taste available to the great selection of Portuguese wines. It was, in all a great experience.

If you're looking for a really tasty Mediterranean meal look no further. I can't remember the fish dish I ordered, but it was delicious...

Went on a Saturday night (definitely need to book) restaurant was 3/4 full . Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable, The food was served quickly and no long waits between courses although not rushed. quality of food was excellent with a very wide range of food
