Donkey Derby in Chesterfield

Food good quality and reasonable price. Staff very helpful and friendly. Atmosphere lost a star because, to me, it's a bit noisy and I'm there to chat as well as eat. That said, the music is good and I'm definitely going again.

This is one of my favourite places in the Chesterfield town centre area. I mainly come for the food, which is good, but sometimes isn't consistent enough on some visits (most times it's bob on, but once or twice it has been sub-par) I will continue dining here as I think it's one of the best places to grab a quick meal considering it is a pub. Obviously, for a more romantic experience there are other places. For what it is, I can't fault it. I just need to remember to come in on Monday-Wednesday and not a weekend (it's Steak night - man has to have a favourite).

Food was nice and good price for a sharer. But only one slice of courgette with the steak. Hidden under the steak. On another visit we all had chicken combos. Everyone enjoyed there food.

Stopped here when collecting goods from town. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. Food was excellent for the price. Wish we had something like this pub local to us.. We'd be using it all the time

Disappointed. Booked a table for 1pm for 4 people to enjoy a lunchtime break with my mum & nephew. When we arrived we were told its an hour wait for food even though we'd booked with a week's notice! Explained that wouldn't work as I needed to be back at work in an hour. Was told nothing they could do. Won't be bothered to try again.

Food is consistently very good, attentive and genuinely friendly staff, recommended.

Really nice food. Clean and tidy. Great choice of menu.. Didn’t like little kids running about when you trying to eat.. apart from that it was great. Will definitely be coming back

What can i say this pub is the best in chesterfield ,great staff ,excellent customer service ,and best of all the food is very very nice,never ever had a bad meal here allways piping hot and very tasty ,chefs need recognition ,Alex served us with a smile he deffinately deserves recognition ,such a gentleman ,a big thankyou to Alex and all the staff at the Donkey Derby ,will be back again this week thankyou team ,.

Visited on Thursday evening, ordered at the bar, went to the loo and back to my table and the food turned up 😮. Lightning fast service and the Hunters Chicken skillet was lovely. I know drop-in seating can be difficult to find at times so if there's a lot of you I'd book ahead. Well worthy of a visit

Group of 6 of us went for food and drinks on Sunday night around 6.30pm. Staff very friendly, service good and the food was very good. Unfortunately 1 in our party asked for a coffee and was told it wasn't available as the machine had been cleaned and 1 of the premium lagers is ridiculously expensive which we didn't know about until it was poured and the staff member was waiting for payment.

I had my favourite. Hunters chicken and it was perfect.

There's not enough bar staff, so you generally have to wait a long while to be served. It doesn't seem to take much for the wait times for food to shoot up, sometimes waiting up to an hour for food. They often have issues with the food supply or something not working in the kitchen, causing parts of the menu not available. If you order your steak to be cooked to your preference, rare, medium rare, etc. You'll get something different, especially as the hot plate continues to overcook your steak once served to you. They asked me to contact them about this review, and I explained my points in more detail, but they ignored to reply to me. That says a lot I think! I'm a local whos been in the town many years, but l have stopped going to the Donkey Derby. I have been to other similar local pubs including some of the same chain, and I never get the same problems, like long waits to be served, excessive wait times for food, food missing from the menu and so on.

Went out for a new year's meal with my kids. It was quiet and peaceful. We shared chicken platters, had pudding and drinks. The pub was closing early but it didn't matter to us. Great service,friendly staff. Perfect evening. Thank you.

Nice food and didn't have to wait long for it, from ordering... Went as a little treat, after axe throwing at a local axe throwing venue. Plenty of parking and pretty local. Was nice 👍

Came last week as a group of 7 for a birthday meal. All had different meals and all were fantastic,great quality and cooked to perfection. Service was friendly and efficient from all who served us . Lovely Xmas meal in a friendly ,clean pub . Highly recommend.

Regular pub don't know about food had a few beers B4 footy match nice pub plenty of screens bit pricey for beer but where isn't 😭

Came last night with friends and we had the festive menu…it was one of the nicest festive meals I’ve had out… The cranberry nut roast was so moist and had lots of flavor.. The others had the turkey dinner and they said the same as me… The staff were friendly and they couldn’t do more for you.. Highly recommend donkey derby for your Christmas meal out… Well done to all the donkey derby team Merry Christmas 🎄

My old work colleagues who still meet up, been for Christmas 🎄 meal. We had a lovely time, couldn't fault a three course Christmas meal for £17.99, meal was so good, the service and good time was had by all. Thank you to all the staff , A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

I liked it and so did my wife. Long time since I had had 5 pints of Guiness which as an Irishman was perfectly served. All staff very friendly, polite and customer focused and able to interact with us. We met with a number of friends but we were the only ones who ate. The lasagne was great, good quality and fairly priced. I am told steak and ale pie good too. It is probably around 10 years since we last visited as we then lived over the road, well Stonegravels but will definitely return. Also it is nice to be acknowledged by all staff when leaving and them saying "thanks, see you soon", as you feel they want you to back. As a final comment I note that all "negative comments" are replied or as I have met previously in other establishments ignored or met with a nefarious reply. Thanks again Donkey Derby.

I have just been to the donkey derby and have been for years. I was served uncooked gammon just like rubber dreadful after raising an issue with the food i was told wait 5 minutes we will change it . Half hour later no food no apology nothing and when i chased up my replacement order the so called manager who clearly is clueless and demonstrating an aggressive position bounded out the kitchen in my face like a loon really what bad behaviour to which i dismissed him off straight away. I have no time for so called power crazed people like this . He along with the staff needs an education in customer service and interpersonal skills including politeness and how to cook food a key pointer here is serve correctly cooked food also do not make promises you do not keep on replacement orders keeping customers sat waiting waiting waiting waiting . I and we will not be coming here any more and will be in touch with the head office

Mrs booked a table 3:45 for today for my birthday, all reserved correctly. Service was very good everyone served with a smile food was top notch and great value 9 month son loved the pasta too! Good job keep it up.

Decided to visit this pub for a family get together. It has a Nice atmosphere and hard working staff. The burger meal was a good selection of the menu.

Massively overpriced soft drinks, service at a nearly empty bar took forever, and food that obviously went from freezer to fryer served in small portions. The ladies bathroom stank so badly I decided against using it.

Decided to go and try it again last night well what a beautiful meal we had great service from the young girls behind the bar and my steak was cooked just how I like it will definitely be back 😋 xx

Easy access shame about customers using disabled bays without displaying a blue badge though it happens everywhere. The worst of it you see people needing facilitie but can't because of missus-no badge means do not use unless on display. As we witnessed in Shirebrook market, lady parked safely on roadside went in shop and then traffic wardens gave parking ticket ( no badge you get a ticket) later lady come out of shop ran after wardens trying to say badge is in other car sorry but thats a no showing of badge.

Excellent value for money on BOGOF burger Tuesday. Service at the bar was average waiting time, drinks were VERY over priced. Nearly £6 for a pint of Madri!

We visited today for lunch with our toddler, as always the food was fab! I just wanted to give a review acknowledging the amazing service we received from Britt, Lauren and Alona! All 3 ladies were full of smiles and so polite and welcoming 🩷 Britt especially went above and beyond with our toddler! As parents with a toddler going through the terrible 2s we sometimes feel uncomfortable and judged 🫣 however Britt went out of her way to help entertain our boy 💙 and make us feel so comfortable and less anxious! It really is a breath of fresh air to have someone help and do so with a smile rather than judge! All 3 ladies are an asset to your establishment 🩷

I went here last week and the food excellent good quality and very enjoyable I had the gammon on the skillet with all the works, my friend had the same and it was 100% delicious, the staff were very attentive at all times to everyone in there and they was very busy thank you to everyone concerned

Our go to place for a cheapish family meal. Usually good standard and have some good offers on. Worth booking.

A good place to have a family celebration, got a very comprehensive menu, got something for everyone. You can go on spec, but if there's a group of you, then I would advise booking before hand .
