Do make the effort and have a drink and /or bite to eat at this excellent, Latin American Cafe. It’s a little off the main drag, in Dane John Gardens, but still close to the city centre, in a nice park, just below a section of the old city wall. It’s offers something different and really special In just a few years , the Don Juan Cafe has become a regular Canterbury fixture, a popular place to gather especially when the weather is fine. It’s open all year round , from Tuesday to Sunday. There are with tables next to the kiosk and a heater for the cold weather: outdoor seating in the park for when the weather is kinder than it was today. On this very cold, miserable afternoon, I enjoyed a fabulous, warming hot chocolate . The Latin American coffee is very good too, but I really needed a hot choc today. Don Juan is licensed and the Caribbean Hot Chocolate with added rum is highly recommended. A selection of wine cider and lagers are also available as well as sangria, ice cold homemade lemonade in the Summer. The food menu varies from day to day but usually include superior proper burgers and tenderised, chicken Milanese in a bun; delicious home made empanadas are also available, daily, with or without a meat filling. The side orders of chips and home made tapa and their own special ,spicy sauces are delectable .Service is friendly and the atmosphere, fun: there is always a very danceable salsa soundtrack on the speakers.

Canterbury Food Festival this weekend in the Dane John Gardens so lots of stalls offering a wide variety of food. Don Juan is the permanent cafe in the gardens and the barbecue smelled delicious so we opted for the steak baguette with chimmichurri and fresh sardines with bread plus a side order of chips. All the food was cooked to order and was excellent....tender, succulent rib eye and lovely, fresh, well - seasoned sardines. At £26 in total we felt it was good value.

I have had good experiences of this eatery before so it is with some surprise I find myself writing this review. The owner is a great guy but whoever was on cook duty today their attitude stinks. The girl on the till and servery was lovely. It was just the lackadaisical guy doing the cooking. I ordered the Mexican beans for £,8.50 and waited and waited and waited...about 25-30 minutes no information - eventually after other orders are being processed (put in after mine). I am told 'its on the way' - 15 minutes later I tell them I have to go and the food is dumped unceremoniously in front of me. A niggardly portion of beans with half of the portion box taken up by tortilla chips.. These are ingredients that cost pence to produce. But it wasn't just the portion size and cost that upset me. It was the attitude of the person who dropped them onto the counter in front of me. So if you brave the stall over the weekend be prepared to wait and wait and wait...

this is far and away one of the most fantastic eateries I've ever accidentally come across . I was hungry looked at the prices and thought "Hmmm maybe not " but I was hungry so decided It had to be however much it was.I stood a moment pondering my choices (many and varied) whilst waiting another customer was called for her order, and oh my god it looked fabulous. So then it was my turn "I'm having one of them please" It was Just perfect the prices are so worth every penny, my banquet, titled a Suarez (steak sandwich ) but that description doesn't do this veritable feast justice there was so much in this Chiabatta loaf it was the edible version of Joseph's amazing technicolour dream coat . There was cheese rocket bacon egg tomato steak feel like I should be singing this contents list . my kids had a home made lemonade (so refreshing) and a hot dog each and ran and ran on the green by the bench I sat at . So recently stopped here as a Pitstop whilst changing trains to London. Interestingly not my usual sort of place as it is like an old taxi drivers food window style cafe in the Dane John park, decision to go here based on proximity to Canterbury East station. That said, am definitely returning!Ordered a bacon sandwich for £3.50 and have to say was very generous in terms of bacon content and also rustic roll. Impressed me too they asked if I wanted the bacon crispy or not ... Good touch chaps! End product was delicious. What impressed me the most?... They were so friendly. They actually make their own sauces and recommended the chilli one which and with the usual disclaimers on how hot it was. Being the spicy food King I'm always up for a challenge so obliged to try it and in fact them all ... It was hot, but delicious. So much so once he told me he sells it I almost bought some !!!Needless to say rather than traditional sauces for my sandwich, I went with the house hot sauce.Do visit, great place and value served in an excellent atmosphere by the people who run it. Please don't change.

This little gem popped up a while ago in the Dane John park. I first walked past and stopped because of the rich meats smells wafting onto the path as I walked passed. I had no cash on me but had a chat to the guys about their lives and their food.Having spent time in South America I had an immediate connection with the guys. And it reminded me of being back there. Now every time I'm in the area I drop in for an empenada or two. Spicy beef are the best! Great if you're eating on the run. But it's even nicer if you're able to sit in the park, chill out and listen to some music. The food is all home made. And I can only see this place getting busier and busier. The only problem they have currently is getting an alcohol license. While not essential. It's clearly an area for growth. Who wouldn't like an Argentinian Shiraz or Chilean Merlot to accompany such delicious? It's also cash only. So make sure you've got some on you to avoid disappointment! It's a place I adore. And a place I really hope can grow and grow. The owners are great people and their food is a genuine piece of South America magic in the heart of Canterbury.

Well who'd have thought it. The tea shed in the Dane John gardens has been transformed into a great Uraguayan coffee shop/ bistro. Totally different concept! Specials cooked on the wood fired grill at the weekend. We shared the mixed grill platter for two, £16, short ribs, beef skirt, black pudding, sausage, salad and bread for two. Plus an unexpected sweet potato! Couldn't be better. No licence, but BYO seems de rigeur.

You can't fault this place. Pop along, sit at the counter and chat to the owners while sampling some great South American food.

Went to Dane John gardens with my daughter and came across Don Juan cafè.They had a bbq, which smelt amazing and the staff also let us try some of there food.I shared an arepa with my daughter and also had some paella. Both of which we enjoyed thoroughly and will definitely be visiting again. It's brilliant if you have children as they can have a run around while you enjoy the food. The staff were really friendly, helpful and cheerful :)

This place is great if you have kids who like running around. Due to its location, kids can just run around while you enjoy a nice paella or grilled meat. Yum.The guys who run it are really friendly and kind.I gave it four starts since some of the food is a bit pricey for what it is and it isn't really restaurant standards. but overall would highly recommend it either way!

Why get all smoky slaving over the bbq when the guys at Don Juan will give you amazing flavours from Uraguay. The half chiclen was amazing very juicy and tasty, sweet potato and spare ribs delicious, lovely sitting outside with the backdrop of the park. Excellent coffee too.

Stopped by for a late lunch snack dragged by the smell of the outdoor BBQ. Had some Arepas from Venezuela one with ham and cheese and a special veggie order with cheese and guacamole. Excellent service that came with the chef's special sauce too! Looking forward to my next visit to try the corn on cob and sweet potatoes cooked on the guacho style BBQ...dribbling already by the thought!

I keep coming to Don Juan regularly since I discovered this little cafè in Dane John Gardens. The food is exquisite, proper south-American dishes, plus paella and barbecue in the weekends. It doesn't get much better than a plate of delicious hot food in a beautiful park for lunch!

We were looking to a restroom when we stumbled on this food kiosk. We had quite a very tasty Empanada (mince meat pastry), olives and nice coffee. Most remarkable was the service the was very friendly, funny and welcoming. They were more interested in letting us try all the food they had than worry about selling and surprisingly what we eventually ate was dead cheap.

There is a very good new cafe in the park offering Latin American street food and excellent coffee. It is housed in the old wooden cafe kiosk which previously had only limited opening hours and a very traditional range of food and beverages: straight out of the 1970s really ( tea and filter coffee; brand name ice creams; pre-packaged cakes and biscuits)The new cafe, cleverly named Don Juan, reflecting the area's original name and the Latin American heritage of the cafe's chefs. The staff come from Uruguay, Venezuela and Argentina and their food is a blend of these countries' traditional dishes. It is counter service and there are only a few seats outside. The food on offer includes empanadas; a type of pasty filed with chicken, beef, spicy beef or spinach; filled croissants, homemade brownies. On Sundays there is a barbecue and chicken paella is served. You can hire the BBQ and chefs for a parties in the Park over the Summer.I was unfamiliar with the food from this region previously but what's on offer here is fresh, inexpensive and delicious. The seasonings used in the empanadas and the paella are tasty but not overwhelming and are an interesting blend of Spanish and Latin American influences. The coffee is excellent too and cappuccinos, espressos and lattes are on offer, ice cream is available in small tubs. Service is very friendly.I have the sense that the cafe staff are struggling to establish themselves. I want people ( especially locals) to support this cafe because I want it to stay open! Give it a go!

Quaint and original South American style Cafe/Restaurant with friendly and chatty staff. Been on several occasions, the first time being when I smelt the BBQ from the park entrance. Diverse tasty menu to suit even the fussiest of people. Not expensive at all (especially when you know how much Cafe owners charge in the High Street nearby..) Set in a beautiful park also to relax in before or after your meal. Not to be missed out by visitors or locals, only downside being that I'll have to renew my gym membership as cannot resist a visit when I'm in town!

My husband, my daughter and I went to Dane John gardens and found this little jewel of a cafe just in the middle the gardens. Everything we bought was AMAZING. We had Arepas (a flatbread with pulled beef) and a south American beef patty - both were out of this world. Before going we had 2 espressos and a delicious home-made apple cake. They also serve coffees, and on the weekend they have Paella (seafood paella on Saturday and chicken and chorizo paella on Sunday), which I'll make sure I'll try this weekend.I really recommend it and I would be happy for it to be open all year round.
