Dog and Gun Knayton in Hambleton

We came here twelve months ago but because of covid could only get drinks, the service then was fantastic. So based on how much we enjoyed our visit last year we came back again. This time we were able to get food and it was very much worth waiting for. The portions are excellent, the food is cooked very well and the service is fabulous. The staff are welcoming and friendly. Its a dog friendly pub with dog dinners available - these in themselves are beautifully presented. We were pleasantly surprised that the majority of the menu has a gluten free option and there are plenty of vegetarian options too. Well worth a visit we would definitely recommend paying this place a visit.

Been a long while since our last visit due to covid. Managed to book a table for today. From the minute we entered to the minute we left we were felt most welcome. We had a roast pork & roast beef dinner, absolutely delicious, highly recommended .

First time visit saw really good reviews on trip advisor & we were not disappointed. The staff were all very welcoming & friendly. Varied menu & steak was served exactly as requested & was very tasty. The cheesecake & crumble dessert were fabulous & rounded off a great meal. Would definitely return & recommend

Honestly the best food we have tasted in a very long time! Visited as a party of 6 after lockdown and had the best meal. Beautifully presented food, freshly cooked, friendly staff, great menu choices to suit all. Who knew cauliflower could taste so good! The starter was one of my favourites. The build a burger menu was also impressive, although it didn’t leave much room for the desserts.

After 9 months we were finally able to eat inside at the Dog and Gun knayton again, we had a party of six to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we certainly went to town with most of us having 3 courses. The starter's were well presented and tasted lovely mine was Prawn cocktail which was well received. For mains I had Sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection and every bit as nice as the last one I had there, the dessert was a rhubarb and ginger cheese cake with cream which finished the meal of well. I was pleased with the care that was taken by the staff to keep us safe and the precautions in place for everyone, the service was first class as usual, and special thanks to Lucy and her team for the quality of the food second to none, finally thanks to Sam and her team for the good service and such a warm welcome it was a pleasure to dine there again after a long break

The reviews for this lovely pub are all true. The atmosphere is so friendly, and the service is excellent. We booked for two evenings whilst on holiday in the area. My husband had the steak which he said was the best he had tasted for a long time. I had the warm goats cheese salad which was really unusual and very tasty. Desserts are lovely too. The meals are very reasonably priced and well worth it. We also enjoyed the Sunday roast. Both the beef and the pork were so tender they melted in the mouth, and the yorkshire puddings were crisp and light.Our compliments to Lucy the chef and everyone at the Dog & Gun. We highly recommend a visit to this lovely pub.

Hands down the best Sunday dinner & I travel an hour for it & never disappointed. If your thinking about booking it. BOOK IT. Trust me.

With pubs closed for eat in meals they have opened up for take away food. We decided to have vegan fish and chips!! As always the chunky chips were to die for. Mushy peas were gorgeous and the home made tartar sauce was great too.. what really amazed me ( and I am under rating it with amazed) was the fish. It tasted exactly like fish. Lovely crispy batter surrounding a banana blossom!!! I’ll say that again a banana blossom. It was brilliant. There really is no need to eat fish when you can eat this. It tasted just like it. I was blown away!! Try it and you’ll understand!

Arrived here after staying locally for a coupleof drinks on a Saturday tea time we were met by the landlady very friendly and made to feel extremely welcome and booked for the Sunday linch the following day... it did not disappoint as every other review! Lovely roast beef plenty of roast potatoes huge Yorkshire and plenty of vegetables. Staff were very friendly would definitely recommend

We have come here many times and it has never failed to disappoint us. The food is always delicious and cooked to perfection. The Cheesecake is one of the best Cheesecakes I have ever had. Unfortunately on this occasion they had none left when I ordered one but I was pleased with the alternative. The meals are always presented with creativity. For example the tea is presented in a unique style teapot accompanied with a beautifully designed cup and saucer. On leaving the premises it was pouring down with rain, my mother in law was concerned we would get wet when going to the car. The young Waiter who attended us throughout our meal ensured we had umbrella cover to avoid getting wet on our way out. He truly went the extra mile and my mother in law and I were so grateful for his help. He is a of great credit to The Dog and Gun. We acknowledge that all the staff members here are always pleasant and helpful but we just wanted to highlight his fantastic customer service.

The bosses daughter catered for our complicated dietary needs...we had a vegan and a vegan gluten free in our crazy group and they came forward with a few options for us in each course. You could tell the chef was vegan as the food was absolutely delicious :) The waiting staff were brilliant coping with our joking around with them, and made my partner's birthday really special by bringing out her pudding with a firework candle and a happy birthday scrolled in chocolate on the plate. This is a great place!

Like yes. We have just enjoyed Sunday lunch at the Dog and Gun, Knayton. The portions were good and the food was exceptional quality. They even gave us dessert to takeaway and were good with our son. I noticed the next table got meals for their dogs too! Overall it felt like a really safe experience, it was well organised and they weren’t cramming people in. We cannot wait to go back! Thank you.

We booked in advance and were given a time to arrive, which we did and were escorted to our table by staff wearing the PPI gear.. We ordered our meal's 2 Steak pies and 1 Fish pie which were delicious and then 1sweet between 2 of us and then coffee to finish. It was beautifully food again with a friendly atmosphere and safety precautions are correct and easy to understand. Unfortunately we had a family member who was working at our meal time and we were able to get a take away for them which was also delicious another 10 out of 10 from us

Went to the Dog and Gun for a birthday meal and the service was impeccable- Covid restrictions were taken very seriously and the cleanliness of the pub was phenomenal. The food was outstanding and they went above and beyond for a personal birthday wish at the end of the meal. Highly recommend

Myself, my boyfriend and our dog visited here on my birthday weekend, and I am so glad we did ! Our food was amazing , fresh veggies and the portions a great size . We have also been to many pubs that proclaim to be dog friendly but this one exceeds all expectations. Not only can you order your doggo food, it comes out in its own tray and water bowl ready for them to eat ! Well done to the lovely landlady who runs the pub , it is such a great thing to offer. Our food was so tasty , we booked again for the Saturday which was again of high standards. Overall, i would recommend as this place does exceptional food at a great price , and very dog friendly. Thank you so much for having us and if we are ever in the area , we will definitely come again !

Booked for Sunday lunch with my family and will definitely be back. One of the best Sunday lunches we have had. I would struggle to criticise any aspect of it and for anyone who knows me - that’s a surprise!The service was really good and the atmosphere pleasant, safe and welcoming.

Visited today with my parents as it is halfway between us both. Exceptional service as always, food best I’ve ever had and nothing was too much trouble. Felt very safe throughout and just another superb visit. Would highly recommend and looking forward to next visit already!

We enjoyed an evening of exceptional food and superb customer service on our first visit after lockdown. The whole team was so welcoming to both my husband and I and our dog, Ruby. We enjoyed the steak pie, fish pie and doggy beef with mash and vegetables all of which we highly recommend. My dietary requirements were dealt with easily and without issue too.A fabulous evening with excellent Covid precautions in place. Thanks to everyone, we hope to be back very soon.

Visited last Sunday for a long-overdue family lunch. The food was incredible - crispy roast potatoes, veg fresh and cooked to perfection, and I appreciated having two veggie options to choose from on a Sunday dinner. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted incredible. Very good safety measures were in place and strictly enforced - distancing, no touching of the pudding board, fully masked up staff, one-way system for the loos etc. The staff were the best - just so welcoming, obliging and fun, especially the young lad with the floppy hair who served us. The pub is equidistant between the various parts of our family, so we are bound to be back for more family lunches in future. Brilliant find.

We visited tonight and we was made to feel welcome as soon as we walked through the door. The standard of food was brilliant, already planning to see when we can visit next!

We have been before so rang a week ago to book as it is always busy , Because of covid 19 , there is not as much choice as usual but still a good menu , the wife had pate and i had prawns , then to follow we had Stael & Ale pie with chip's and veg , { home made pie } i had ice cream to follow , and also a couple of drinks , The Dog n Gun is on the 50% off deal , The safety was spot on and the Staff explained everything , , tables nice a spaced , Well worth a visit if in the area

Came for Sunday lunch to celebrate my husband’s birthday. From start to finish the staff were so lovely & friendly & tended to our every need! We had the roast beef & it was probably the tastiest & tenderest we’ve ever had 👍

One meal in the restaurant and one takeaway meal later we are very impressed. We ate in the restaurant on Thursday 16th and all four of us chose the build your own burger menu, the choices are easy to follow and the staff really go the extra mile to cater for your every need, we left nothing on any of our plates, and two of us followed with one of the best Cheesecakes, i have ever eaten, home made Apple crumble and Custard was devoured by one other, and a rich chocolate brownie never stood a chance as the choice of the fourth member of our group. We vowed to eat there again, before we left the area, so tried to book for Saturday, but unfortunately, they were fully booked, so ordered four Steak and Ale pies from the takeaway menu, they again hit the spot with hot superb food, in a well thought out tray arrangement, that doubles up as a plate. If you are staying nearby please make the effort to go, you will not be disappointed.

As we have recently purchased a holiday home in Thirsk, we are so glad to have found this absolute Gem of an Eatery.Our first visit, today, certainly won’t be the last.As the website states, the welcome was, indeed, warm and friendly. Lucy and her Staff made us feel at home and provided the most delicious of Sunday Lunches.The quality of the food was fabulous (The pâté starter was exceptional)My only regret was that we had been out in Thirsk for a large meal the night previous, so didn’t have room for desert. This will be rectified next time.The Service was also superb. Both Servers were polite, professional and efficient.We also felt very safe , regarding Covid 19, due to the precautionary measures in place at the Dog and Gun.Great value for money and well worth a visit.Cannot recommend enough.We will be back rack time we are in Thirsk.As for those who have, recently, made bookings but not turned up, you have missed a treat whilst being incredibly discourteous to the owners of an establishment that is thoroughly deserving of support.

I got three takeaway Sunday lunches for Father’s Day and it was a good quality test as between us we tried the beef, the chicken and the pork! They were without exception delicious. Properly cooked veg, two types of spuds, gallons of gravy served separately, and fantastic Yorkshire puddings. And that’s before mentioning the meats, which were all fantastic. This pub is doing takeaways all the time, not just on Sundays. Try it, you won’t be disappointed!

We had heard good things about the Dog and Gun at Knayton and after looking at the menu decided to treat ourselves.My daughter had the double stack burger with bacon and cheese which she said was lovely.My wife had steak pie with chips and veg, she was singing its praises.I had hot shot chicken parmo and fries, it was fantastic, definatley the best parmo I have ever had.We will certainly get food from here again.

I love the Dog and Gun so much because the Sunday lunch is amazing and you can get a kids portion or an adult portion, you don’t have to get Sunday lunch you can get anything off the menu (kids or adults). Normally I’m full but the dessert menu looks incredibly delicious (not the board not the food).

Lovely takeaway Mother’s Day lunch yesterday from our great village pub! We made it a virtual lunch date with a friend who also had a takeaway from the Pub and it was good fun with a delicious meal. We really value our local and this initiative is very supportive of our village community in these challenging times and if you don’t live within delivery distance you can collect!

2 friends and I had booked to eat at the Dog and Gun today in celebration of Mother's Day. With the effect of social meeting caused by the Coronavirus, we converted this to a takeaway (we all live in the village) and had a virtual lunch via video link! Had a meal here 1 evening. Foid was excellentvtge vest union rings I've ever had . Presentation was amazing and service of the staff was very good would recommend anybody eating here.

We visited on a Sunday, only had room for the mains as we’d had a large breakfast.Husband had lamb roast and I had the salmon, both meals were gorgeous, well cooked, hot and tasty. We couldn't eat all the veg that came with it but my husband thought the roast spuds were amazing and again all veg well cooked and hot.The pub was really nice and cosy, clean and as it was full of families and not just people getting drunk at the bar it felt very welcoming and didn’t want to leave. Waitresses were very friendly and kept asking if there was anything else, refills, sauces etc.Will definitely come again and leave room for dessert next time.

Really friendly village pub serving good quality food. You won't pass it on the way to anywhere (after the village the road narrows to a single track road to nowhere) BUT it is a very short distance from the main A19, between Thirsk and Osmotherley and very well worth the detour. The pub is very dog friendly and they even have a special doggy menu (scrambled eggs, gravy and mash, cheesy popcorn etc). Our dog had the cheesy popcorn and really enjoyed it. The braised lamb shank with home-made chips was excellent - in fact I'd say the best chips I've had anywhere, ever!Couple of points to note; the pub's not open all day so it's worth phoning ahead to check times - especially if you want to eat as it's very popular so you will need to book.

What a wonderful find. I was looking for somewhere halfway to meet my daughter for Sunday lunch. She was coming from Newcastle and I from Bradford. Found this place easily and was given a lovely friendly welcome on stepping inside. Only small inside but warm and sociable with lovely decor. Even tho we hadn’t booked, a table was found for us and we were quickly seated. We both chose the traditional beef dinner and wow, the beef was plentiful, gorgeously cooked and Melted in the mouth! Accompanied by Yorkshire puds roasties, mash and veggies. Absolutely delicious! We both chose a desert too which was fabulously presented and tasted Devine! A gorgeous Sunday dinner and easily one we will do again soon! Can’t wait to go back!

A classically beautiful Yorkshire pub where friendly staff are quick to serve you. The food was excellent with lots of fresh and well cooked vegetables. The sweets were equally as good. We enjoyed the meal so much that we decided to go there for my wife's 60th birthday next June. We originally intended to go to a London restaurant for this occasion but why bother when there are places of quality nearer home

Having seen so many good reviews for this place, me and my partner decided to visit after the new year celebrations. It was a Saturday evening and quiet (understandably with it being the first weekend of January). The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We both ordered the build your own burgers which were without doubt the best burgers we've had. You could even choose a gluten free bun!

Situated just off the A19 in small village of Knayton. Nice old pub with good menu and very good food. Opening times limited so check before venturing out. Also don't rely on booking on internet---a reply will be late, if at all ! Use the phone, but don't expect a response first time! Popular and busy at weekends.

We had a fantastic trip to the Dog and Gun at Knayton for our party of eleven. Everyone had a wonderful meal and the vegan meals got very high praise. Sam gave us her usual warm welcome and the waitresses did a wonderful job throughout the evening. Thank you for your hospitality and keep up the fantastic work.

Quite a journey for us for a Sunday lunch but it was more than worth it. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The Tim Taylor’s Landlord was superb which was a good sign. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday Lunches. Large portions and everything beautifully cooked. Will definitely return when in the area.

We had been to thirsk on a day out from Penrith and found this gem tucked away but easy to find, there were three of us , They were busy but found us a space with plenty of room , We all chose the Sunday Roast Beef , with Mash , Carrots , Cabbage,Broccoli , Yorkshire's ,Roast Potatoes , and Plenty of Gravy ,and an extra portion of Cauliflower Cheese . WHAT a cracking meal it was , the Beef was cooked to perfection as was everything else and large portion's , One of our group said could we help with her dinner , but when she cut into it , she said , forget the help your having none of this , We have toured the length and breadth of Britain this year , and i can honestly say This is one of the best Sunday dinners yet , We could not manage a dessert as we were quite full , Anyone who reads my posts will know i tell it as it is , well this is one NOT to miss

Wasn't going to turn down a burger... Not when they're as good as these.. Build your own. choice of buns / burgers / cheeses / garnish etc etc.. Turns into a huge tower of delight. Loved it... Time for pudding.... I love toffee so when i saw a yorkshire pudding filled with cinder toffee icecream i thought well the worst thing would be a big bowl of Cinder toffee ice-cream and i really wouldn''t mind that... Out comes a big yorkshire pudding sitting in a toffee sauce with a huge dollop of ice cream and some mixed berries and edible flowers.. It was a thing of beauty and probably the best dessert i've eaten. I will be going back for more...

Its is not often I rate 10 out of 10 but this place, its staff, the food quality, the environment utterly deserve my praise, what I wouldn't give to have this place as my own local. Sadly we were just passing through! The lady behind the bar though we had not booked but hoping to get a nice Sunday roast simply could not do enough for for us. she squeezed us in, actually apologizing for where she had to seat us which incidentally we thought was very nice. The food was fantastic, so remarkable we jokingly said it would be worth moving this way just to be near this lovely pub/restaurant . It has a great atmosphere and we highly recommend it.

Staying at the local caravan park we decided to try the Dog & Gun. So glad we did. 2 adults and 2 children & we all thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. Great range of beverages, excellent varied menu. Service was excellent and the kids were given colouring books to keep them entertained. The food was fantastic. Children had their own menu too at a very reasonable price. Would highly recommend and will certainly return.

We were on route home from a weekend in Robin Hoods Bay and stopped by this place completely by accident and thought to break the trip up we would call in. The place was busy and the atmosphere was beautiful, we asked if they had a table for 4 even though we hadn’t booked and she managed to fit us in even though it was busy, we were made to feel welcome and the food was absolutely stunning, an absolute gem and would recommend to everyone!

Such a lovely welcoming pub and really dog friendly with a doggie menu too so they can eat while you do! My pup loved his salmon dinner and all the fuss he got. A great choice of really delicious food on the menu and also a specials board too. The best hand cooked chips I’ve ever had! Look forward to eating here often from now on.

Varied menu and excellent service. Although pub/restaurant was busy, we weren't hurried and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Food was freshly prepared and we would happily dine here again.

Called in for lunch to this pub in Knayton just off the A19. Warm welcome for us and the dog. Clean, tidy, pleasant locals well stocked bar and most importantly good food. Will be happy to return to this well run pub.

Visited Dog and Gun for the first time today for Sunday lunch. We were warmly greeted by the lady behind the bar and the lovely waitress Kate. I had the Roast beef which came with a large Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes and a selection of fresh vegetables. The meal was beautifully presented, tasted delicious and was piping hot,,could not fault it at all! For dessert, I had the best Eton mess I have ever tasted.

Can't believe that I have passed this turn off on the A19 hundreds of times and not been to this restaurant. Absolutely superb Sunday lunch today. Staff, service and food faultless. Birthday meet up with my daughter and fiance. Can't wait to go back again

Visited for Sunday Roast. Excellent food and pet friendly. The owners having the same breed of dog. Hungarian Vizzla. Brilliant service, next time we are in the area will pay another visit.

We were staying in Thirsk and booked to eat here one night. It was well worth the visit. The service, atmosphere and the food were all excellent. There is a great menu, three of us chose Fish Pie and one Steak Pie which we all thoroughly enjoyed. The Fish Pie was the best I’ve ever tasted! Would recommend here to anyone.

What can I say, this place is a total gem! We popped in for ‘build your own burger’ Wednesday. There were many choices of meat, cheese, salad, buns and types of chips. I went for a double steak stack in a brioche, with lettuce, gherkins, portobello mushroom, Brie, BBQ sauce and skin on fries, they were absolutely delicious!

We brought a school party for an early dinner on return from the Great Yorkshire Show. The staff were excellent, from our initial phone contact, via email to send and confirm meal choices and again on the day when we were delayed by traffic. When we arrived the children were blown away by the experience. The staff were kind, friendly and helpful. The children were treated as special, individual customers - each meal being delivered to a specifically named child. Extra sides were also offered. All of the staff were so helpful and allowed us to stick to our very tight schedule.

Came here for a pre-birthday meal after reading TA reviews. What a good choice! The server was very friendly and helpful. We all chose different meals (I had the steak pie and it was delicious!) and everyone sent back empty plates! We weren’t rushed at all and everything was lovely. Would have no hesitation in returning here again!

Called in for Sunday lunch after reading the reviews. We were not disappointed, simply the best pub Sunday lunch I have had for years. We both had slow cooked beef mm. the veg, roast and mashed potatoes were perfect. Better half had a chocolate brownie for pud, verdict delicious. Just two minutes off the A19 near Thirsk

Four of us had a nice meal on Friday night. I am vegetarian and there was plenty of choice. My companions all enjoyed their food. My only complaints were that my chick pea curry was more of a mixed veg curry with a few chick peas and the waiter was a little over friendly chatting to us for ages. Apart from that, good food, drink and atmosphere.

Had a late Sunday lunch here for Father’s Day. It’s a proper pub inside with friendly staff. It always appears to be popular as we have tried to get in before without booking but with no luck. Booked ahead this time and managed to get in for 4.15. The service was good, the beer excellent and more importantly the food fantastic. One complaint was they’d ran out of cauliflower cheese by that time of day. Other than that it was one of the better Sunday lunches in the area. Worth a visit but book in.

Absolutely fabulous food, lovely staff, reasonably priced would definitely recommend. We had Sunday lunch, lots of choice.

My wife is a professional cook and can be quite critical, however she thoroughly enjoyed Sunday lunch today, opting for the roast pork and I chose the chicken. The meals were both outstanding, faultless in every way. Staff were attentive without being ‘over the top’. We have already booked to go back, this time for a weekday evening meal. We would highly recommend the Dog and Gun and cannot wait to return.

We have never recieved service so high as when we visited this pub. It was my wife`s 60th, it was the only pub offering a great variety of choice on the menu. we traveled 16miles from our hotel we were in. The landlady put a bouquet of flowers on the table that i asked if she could. The welcome was very warm, the atmosphere in the pub was great, everyone very happy and enjoying themselves. The landlady spead her happyness over into the clients and the responce was given back.

A party of 11 of us booked for Sunday lunch, we were greeted with smiles and shown our table, there were 6 adults and 5 kids, we ordered food and drinks and had a great time the food was very good the drinks the same the staff were very good friendly, efficient and fun, the landlady at one point had 5 kids at the bar talking to her, she looked after them a treat..We would like to say a great big thank you to them and would recommend the Dog and Gun to all.

What a fabulous place, friendly welcome especially for the dog! Staff outstanding, roast beef that melted in your mouth! Can’t recommend highly enough. Landlady even called after us after a mistake with the bill and gave us money back.

6 of us visited for the final evening that we were all together in Yorkshire and we enjoyed a fabulous meal.

Called in for Sunday Lunch, easiest thing in the world to do badly,not so easy to do it well.This was exceptional , well done chef. Lovely Bar and Waiting Staff you should all be very proud of yourselves. Thank you we will certainly return

We frequently visit this pub, and enjoy both the company of staff, and the quality of the food. Even more so the pudding!! Wow, they're amazing. The service is excellent, and no matter who busy this pub is, the atmosphere is brilliant! It's a MUST visit!

We visited The Dog and Gun for yet another Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed, from the greeting to the goodbye we weren’t disappointed, the staff are amazing it’s like we have known each other years .

Very very nice . One of the best Sunday lunch Ever !!! 3 had beautiful lamb shank, 3 had beef. Catered for vegetarian in a better way than most pubs ever do. Staff were very nice and engaging. Highly recommended.

I don't often write reviews, but the dog and gun is well worth a visit, very welcoming staff, excellent menu and specials board, the quality of the food is superb, from start to finish I can only say 5* for well presented, the food tasted superb, great flavours and fresh. A place not to be missed.

Pre-booked a table here because we were on holiday nearby and i'd found this place on the internet and it had good reviews. I'm getting fed up of trying establishments on the hop only to be served up inedible tripe therefore tripadvisor is my saviour on this occasion because our experience at the D&G; was exceptional.

I have visited this pub a number of times now, and have not once been disappointed! When you experience a Sunday roast as good as this, I can guarantee you will never go anywhere else! The most amazing roast beef! The staff are so friendly and welcoming, we drive from York and will continue to do so. We have also eaten from the main menu during the week and this is just as delicious. Wish I could give 10 stars, excellent all round.
