Dobson and Parnell in Newcastle upon Tyne

Excellent overall. We each had 3 courses from the set menu plus the matching wines, which were all great. Food was top notch, service was nice and attentive without being bothersome, and I’d say it was good value too considering the amount we ate and drank, and the quality.

We went for dinner on a Saturday evening and were disappointed that their top three dishes were unavailable, the starter and two mains we wanted to order originally. They explained they had had a busy day but they were at half capacity at 8pm. Not sure if this happens often or it was a one time thing but we were rather disappointed nonetheless. The food was nice but nothing exceptional. I had the fried coley with oyster hollandaise and it was well cooked but I couldn’t really taste the oyster in the hollandaise. I had the bao bun as a starter and the bun itself was quite dense, not light and puffy as it should be. I don’t think we will go back

Excellent service and people, really caring and attentive! We were not that amazed with food and the quality of it, plus overall atmosphere. I would suggest coming back for a glass of wine though

5 of us visited for a birthday celebration, the decor is lovely with a nice welcoming ambience too. We had one person who was vegetarian and gluten free and they were able to choose a dish from each course from the set menu - most unusual that they have this opportunity! The fish options were also delicious. Childrens menu was well balanced between predictable (in a good way) options and also incorporated some of the main menu options too. The chips were absolutely outstanding. Mocktails were well received by the children. The staff were helpful and very accommodating for dietary requirements. It's actually very reasonably priced considering the quality, presentation and taste of dishes.

One of my favourite places in Newcastle for a special occasion meal, the prices are more than fair for the quality of the meal and the Sunday dinners are incredible, love the atmosphere too. The vegetarian options are always good too and it's nice that on Sundays there's more options than just a dinner if you're not in the mood for one

We were given a voucher for my Partners 60th. The meal was really nice, however we were only allowed to book from a certain menu and it happened to be restaurant week. It was still beautiful food. Highly recommend.

We opted for the set menu at £32 for three courses. All three were delightful. The parsnip pakoras were crisp, served on a bed of spicy green chutney. The main roast chicken was wonderfully tender and the side of maple syrup and miso roasted root vegetables was very moreish. The pistachio and blood orange sponge nicely rounded off the meal. Cocktails at £15 for two went down well. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly during the whole evening. We went for the early sitting and the restaurant was half full but it was filling up by the time we left.

I'm my opinion.. the best restaurant in Newcastle.

Busy because it was Restaurant Week but the service was cheerful and efficient and the atmosphere buzzing. The food was superb, the menu offered a good choice and the wine pairing was explained fully and was delicious. Highly recommended for delicious food.

Dined on Saturday night for the first time and could not have been more impressed. Food was delicious, cocktails were fun, wine was lovely. We were with out toddler and the staff were so generous, kind, and accomodating. Our waitperson, Demi, was wonderful and we had such a romantic evening even with toddler in tow. Would definitely recommend.

The quality of food is undeniable. The chicken was cooked to perfection, almost melting in my mouth, same for the cod. Liked the soup and enjoyed the chocolate dessert. However, I have to say that for the amount of money we paid I would expect a bit better taste wise. Portions were a bit on the small side (we went during Restaurant Week) and nothing really stood out. We sat close to the window and there was a strong light coming towards us which affected negatively the already bright ambiance. Service was exceptional and our waiter was always friendly, approachable and smiling. With that being said, if you like simple british cuisine that's well cooked this might be the place for you.

The food was unbelievably good and the service was fantastic. Especially loved the smoked trout starter and dark chocolate cremeux. The drinks were really good as well, especially the lemon fizz whizz cocktail, tasted like lemon sherbet and was so refreshing.

Simply middle of the road for food and like nearly all places on the quayside bottles of wine are way overpriced!!!!

Let's be honest. The food was nice both my plates tasted the same tho. Not inspired food. Really expensive if this was 15-20 a plate fair play but it's not. So I'm just wondering what you get that is worth the extra here. Well I can tell you one plus the service is some of the best IV had in Newcastle spot on every member of staff. Fantastic experience here on Saturday 30th December. The restaurant wasn’t busy a we ate mid afternoon but the atmosphere was still great. All of our food was too notch and the staff were fantastic.

It was my first time dining at Dobson & Parnell tonight. From start to finish it was lovely, the service was outstanding, the food was so lovely and the wine superb. I would highly recommend!

Booked for 6pm, 5 course tasting menu and was very disappointed in both flavour and speed of service. Within 30 minutes we were 4 courses in, and that was after asking them to slow down. Infact, the first course came before we’d had a drink (that was after the bread!) and the plates were cleared while I was still eating! Food was just ok, my husbands favourite dish was the cheese board so that tells a story in itself. Overall, having experienced many tasting menus this would come bottom, and it felt as though they just wanted us in and out as quickly as possible.

Great food at affordable prices

Food is to die for on the christmas taster menu for 2023!! The sweetest staff giving me a lovely glass of Prosecco and a birthday card which I wasn’t expecting at all. I feel very humbled with such generosity as I have never had that before ever. Staff went above and beyond with the service and I know for sure I will be back

Had a reunion lunch with ex colleagues for an early Christmas treat. Weren't disappointed. The place was busy throughout our stay. Food was excellent and the service attentive and welcoming. Out of this world! The food is just spectacular! Very reasonably priced for a tasting menu, and worth every penny. The staff are so attentive and friendly. The sommelier is very knowledgeable. Amazing night out.

We visited recently for a family meal and had the 7 course tasting menu. Overall the food was beautiful, lovely wine pairing with friendly service. The only critique is that service was quite slow, the menu advised 2.5 to 3 hours for the tasting menu but it was 4 hours with some noticeably long gaps between courses. Despite that, a lovely evening and I’d return.

We had a lovely lunch at Dobson & Parnell to celebrate two birthdays and a pregnancy. We were very impressed by the excellent and personal service from the staff, and the food was absolutely delicious. Cannot recommend it enough - will definitely be back again soon.

Firstly, friendly and professional staff are to be commended. Starters were good however Sunday roast disappointing. Pork consisted of two very finely sliced tiny pieces of loin, two tiny carrots, tablespoon of red cabbage and the same of creamy leeks with two roast potatoes which were so dry they had obviously been cooked for hours in advance. The food was just warm and the restaurant itself very cold so not very comfortable at all which didn’t help. Really nice ambiance but seems to be a repeat pattern of the same issues? Surely the chef and management need to take this on board and do something about it? We would like to return but improvements must be made.

Amazing food and impeccable service

We booked a table of 4 and mentioned it was our friend birthday, it was a lovely touch to have a card on the table when we arrived. Friendly service, though quite light touch for this calibre of restaurant. Food and wine were fantastic, cocktails not so much.

Last time we came here I had the best Sunday roast I've ever had, and this time didn't disappoint! Unlike too many other Sunday lunch offerings, where everything is a generic sideshow to the meat, here every element is given the same thought and care as the perfectly pink, succulent beef itself; light, fluffy Yorkshires, maple glazed carrots, luxuriously creamy leeks, herb roasted spuds. The starters and desserts are unpretentious but equally delicious. The staff are brilliant - relaxed but professional and completely knowledgeable of the menu and their excellent wines. Awesome city that it is, Dobson & Parnell has become our main reason for visiting Newcastle, and without doubt will be our first booking next time we visit. And, by the way, outstanding value.

After my experience yesterday, I cannot begin to fathom how this restaurant has managed to maintain its place on the Michelin guide. Firstly, the server informed us that they had run out of beef. On an already limited Sunday lunch menu, this seems like sheer bad planning. We were not informed of any alternative until after we'd ordered. Starters were ok, nothing special but no huge complaints. It then took roughly 30 minutes for the main to arrive. Surprising considering the restaurant wasn't particularly busy and seemed adequately staffed. The pork looked more like catering slices rather than off a proper joint of meat. The creamed leek was far too salty, the potatoes were dry and the little cabbage we were given looked like it had been scraped off the bottom of a pan. The vegetarian option was almost inedible. The entire plate looked dry and the gnocchi was overcooked. I suspect this being due to the fact that it had been sitting under a heat lamp on the pass while the other dishes were prepared. Overall, not worth the wait or the money which is really disappointing considering the good reputation that this restaurant seemingly used to have. If I'd looked at the reviews beforehand I would've had second thoughts about booking.

The restaurant is in the Michelin guide, is set in a nice room with excellent service. The restaurant was quite busy so may need to be booked for a weekend dinner We tried the 5 course tasting menu and whilst there is a wine pairing option, we selected a bottle of wine from the wine list. All of the courses were tasty, to a good standard and well presented. One duck dish was not to my taste but there was no issue with the cooking of it. All in all, a nice experience and a nice night out. Recommended.

Yet again, amazing food, service and ambiance. 5 starts doesn't do this restaurant justice.

I came for Sunday lunch with my partner. The staff were very friendly however it did take a long time for orders to be taken. The restaurant appeared to be fairly full but they did seem to have adequate staff working so I’m not sure why there was such a delay. We both had a cocktail which was very nice and (eventually) managed to order a bottle of wine which was ok. Obviously the main reason for my visit was to try the Sunday lunch. I ordered the beef and my partner ordered the pork. Both meals were luke warm and there wasn’t a great deal of meat. There was two slices of beef on my plate and one of the slices was was very fatty so I left it. There wasn’t a great deal of veg either. This was my first visit. It may be that eating here through the week is better. It could be they were having an off day today, but based on my experience today it was expensive, food average and it took far to long to order so I won’t be rushing back.

Started well, nice wine, friendly table service. Starters were good although they had ran out of the beetroot at 2,15pm? Main meal,Sunday roast, one pork one beef, okay, gravy was like water, one carrot, peas? Meat was okay as was Yorkshire pudding but overall a very average effort. Desert... wow Ran out of sticky toffee pudding, replacement was a fruit hobnob with ice cream (no thanks) I ordered caramel Panna Cotta with poached pear... I never realised that you could make a panna cotta 3mm in depth, then top it with shavings of pear that were more like left over peelings... absolutely shameful Two starters, two mains, one desert and a bottle of wine £96 Won't be going back for a Sunday roast maybe the tasting menu is better. Sister resteraunt to Blackfriars but nowhere near as good.

Fine dining tasting menu with a wine pairing for my partner's birthday and we've never been before. We're greeted with a birthday card from the restaurant which is a lovely touch and very much appreciated. The whole evening, the service, the food, the wine, the effort was exceptional and for once the vegetarian tasting menu for my partner does not contain endless pasta or risotto. It's as imaginative as the normal menu and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you very much for an excellent evening and we can't wait to book again.

Perfect Restaurant , great location , fabulous serving staff …. go there ! The food is amazing …. one small point i loved all the savoury taster courses but i chose my desert of a cookie with golden syrup …. bad move but my choice ! We arrived and were shown to our table and asked if we wanted water for the table and drinks order taken and brought quickly. Positives The staff were very attentive. The bread that we were given to start was amazing, along with the seaweed butter that complemented it. The food was amazing and portion sizes generous. Good value for money. Negatives None I can think of. Will we return Yes, we certainly will.

I was very happy with the table position as I could see around the restaurant. The servers were attentive and knowledgeable and helped us to make wise choices that suited our tastes. We decided to go for the wine pairings with the first and second courses which proved to be excellent wines. The food was presented beautifully and the tastes were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed each one. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and we were made to feel right at home by the staff. We will definitely be back.

Superb restaurant who pay particular attention to guest allergies. I have never been to anywhere as scrupulously efficient in putting my mind at rest over my crustacean allergy. The service was second to none and the food scrumptious. Highly recommend

I dined at Dobson and Parnell twice. The service was very good both times. Sadly, I can’t say the same for food. However, the price is quite affordable and the friendly service makes for a pleasant dining experience. My most recent visit was for a three course pre-theatre dinner. I had the mackerel for starter. It was simply a smoked mackerel with a hint of ginger, and mayonnaise which I could have easily had at home. My confit duck main could be described as an over-cooked Gressingham duck leg. It was left in the oven for too long. It wasn’t at all tender with a melt in the mouth texture as confit duck should be. The mille fuille dessert was better than the main, but it had an overpowering taste of coconut. It was not the best mille fuille I had. Overall, although the food was under-par, I had an excellent dining experience due to friendly service and atmosphere.

I had a lovely dining experience at this place. Absolutely amazing service, they hang your coat for you, come to ask how you enjoy your meal very often, and with a very polite and friendly attitude. The price for the set meal is affordable, and the quality of the food is totally worth it.
