Derbar Indian Restaurant in Aberdeenshire

I was there for work. Ideal if you don't want an itemised bill for expenses. Chicken tikka achari was spot on. Friendly service.

I was part of a party of 10 friends who got together for a curry a few beers and a good catch-up on Saturday 10th Dec. We have used Derbar several times for this and we were not disappointed! Yet again the food was excellent and our host and his staff were attentive & friendly. I had Chicken Tikka Bhoona. Not on the menu, but I prefer it made with Tikka than plain chicken and it was no problem for them to provide it. The chicken was delicious, with the Tikka flavour combining beautifully with the depth of flavours in the Bhoona sauce. A real treat. The rice was perfect & the Naan breads were perfectly cooked. We all had a great time and we will not hesitate to use Derbar for our next catch-up. My family and I will also be continuing to use the takeaway service in the meantime too. :)

Was a bit worried about recent reviews but with 3 Carnivores, 2 Vegetarians and 2 Vegans felt an Indian Restaurant was the safest bet. We weren't disappointed. We had a wide selection of dishes which were all excellent. My wife had the Tarka Daal and Vegetable Fried Rice which were both delicious whilst I had Chicken Jalfrezi and a Paratha. The Jalfrezi was very tasty, a perfect heat, too hot for most but not ludicrous and the paratha was flaky and perfect. Will definitely go back if we are ever in Banchory again.

Having seen the previous reviews I was sceptical but keen for a curry so I went. The restaurant is bright, clean and a nice place to eat. I had the vegetable pakora and the Chicken Tikka Bhuna. Both were delivered, the tikka bhuna was outstanding with so many complex flavours. The service was friendly and efficient. I read that others have had challenges with service, but I think they have to remember this is a very remote Highland village and not top end London. I think the people of Banchory are lucky to have such good Indian food in this remote and beautiful place. Thank you.

Possibly one of the worst dining experiences I have had. Being treated to dinner by a close friend and decided on the Derbar - big mistake. On arrival at around 8.40pm, we asked if they could accommodate. We were advised "no problem" and were shown to our table. Around 3 or 4 other tables of diners at that point. First impression was that there was not much atmosphere and we noted some enormous cobwebs on the windows which we tried to ignore. During our meal, we were continually asked if we were finished... this is whilst eating with food on our plates!! Once other diners left, the music was switched off and the staff were staring at us speaking loudly about the fact that we were still there despite them having asked us if we were finished umpteen times. This must have been approximately 10 to 15 minutes after receiving our main course. We were also half way through a horrendously overpriced bottle of wine (£24.95 for a bottle you can buy in Tesco for £6 - whilst I appreciate alcohol has a large mark up, this was insulting as clearly no thought has gone in to the wine list!). When I informed the staff that we could hear EVERYTHING they were saying about us, one of the staff burst out laughing. We asked to speak with the manager who proceeded to blame the front of staff member and saying some unpleasant, personal things about her, which it would be inappropriate to repeat here. He became more and more agitated and started complaining about how he and his staff have to drive home to Aberdeen after work. We were flabbergasted and suggested that he make a gesture to try and make up for the horrendous evening we ere having. He then proceeded to accuse of valuing money above all else.... somewhat ironic we thought since he was very willing to take our money and kick us out the door before we had had the opportunity to finish our meal. From the off we were made to feel like a complete and utter inconvenience until we left just before 10.30pm. This could have been avoided if the management had informed us at the beginning of our visit that they shut at a certain time and needed us out - closing time is advertised as being 11pm!! Makes Fawlty Towers look professional!!! Food bog standard (there is a far superior take away 50m away with no sit in), but service / customer care non existent. Funnily enough, I spoke witha friend who happened to go there the following evening and had had a bad experience. I asked why, and before I had relayed my story they said "well, we were the last people there......" Their plates were being cleared as they were still eating from them! Clearly how these amateurs treat customers on a regular basis, so I have no idea why they are still in business! Surreal, disastrous and needless to say we will not be back!

What can I say, apart from one of the worst dining and surreal experiences encountered. Planned to enjoy a long overdue dinner out with a close friend only to be met with an unwelcome non existent customer interface or atmosphere, overpriced cheap wine at 400% mark up, with the attitude we will serve you but can’t be bothered to wait for you to finish as we want to go home! How businesses like this still exist are beyond understanding, they are out for a quick buck and have no interest in the customer but expect top dollar - living in cloud coo coo land! Continually harrassed throughout meal when not finished, mocked and talked about by staff in ear shot, made to feel incredibly uncomfortable and unwelcome, no atmosphere, freezing cold, overpriced and small portion sizes. Manager was full of excuses and made no genuine attempt to address the serious failings. Fair to say will not return or endorse such a poor excuse for a local business…..sad.

We had our evening meal on a Friday evening March 2022. The menu is extensive with the usual Indian fare plus house specialities. Kingfisher lager is on draft. The service and food were excellent. The restaurant is bright and modern. The only downside is the flight of steps from the street to the door. Unless there is another way in then I'm sure there is no disabled access.

I visited here with my friend recently and the service was terrible. Walked in got ignored I had to ask if we could be seated and the service was so slow as well. Would not recommend anyone to visit here.

What an amazing menu to choose from in the first place and was not disappointed in the food or the kingfisher on tap! Unusual dishes as well the expected ones. Every dish was extremely flavoursome and well seasoned. The lamb was tended and plentiful and the chicken moist and tender. Even the breads were the best ever! Finished off with a special Pakistani tea by request. Great food, great location and lovely family owner. Thank you!

We have been going here for years for both sit in and takeaway. Really excellent food and Mohamed (owner) is ace. Friendly service with a great selection of food.

Spending a couple of nights in Banchory with my husband and booked in advance! Thankfully!! Had really great meal! We got in just in time as soon filled with many tables! That didn’t worry staff! Efficient service and food was great!! All Covid rules in place and carried out!! Look forward to our next visit!!

Amazing great quality sit in and take away restaurant. Full bar and super friendly staff who cater to all needs. Suitable for family visits, celebrations, couples and businesses to meet, greet and eat. The owner is there every day to make sure things run smooth and is so lovely and approachable! Highly recommend!

We have eaten twice at Derbar recently. Both times the food has been excellent and service efficient. The meat in the chicken pakora & mixed tikka plate were very tasty and tender. The chutneys with the popadoms were really fresh and tasty. We also had a lamb curry from the specials and a sag aloo, which were also both high quality. We’ll be back!

A most excellent meal with good and friendly service and atmosphere. I can thoroughly recommend. And to repeat despite Tripadvisor and Google saying that it is closed, it is definitely open for eating in and not just takeaway.

We were turned away 8minutes before opening. When asked if there was a table or if we were to early we were told no. Not have a drink kitchen opens at 4.30 just no. Went across road to Rangoli take away and a 5* meal provided for a fraction of the price.

Would definately recommend this Indian Restaurant. Called here at short notice during Covid. Had sanitisers and seating at appropriate distancing. Also took contact details in case of need re Covid.Being from Bradford, we have an abundance of Indian Restaurants - The Derbar did not disappoint! The food was delicious- it was clean, tasty and the meat was lean. We had the mixed starter which was lovely and the fish pakoras which were the best we had ever tasted! The service was excellent and they even made me a Mango Lassi which was not on the menu. I would recommend going here and if we are back in the area, we will definitely be making another visit. Good value for money.

So I would rate this “average” there is a big menu with some different dishes. The owner is friendly. The setting is nice. The food is ok. The service was slow, and we got the wrong things. Not terrible but not mind blowing. Worth a visit if you are in the area and want curry, but don’t expect the world!!!

Wonderful food with a fabulous manager - a real treat for banchory residents. As good as any curry in glasgow, the dips and sides arguably better! Get down to this place, we love it and it deserves to keep its place on the high street. Support local business.

Always such a pleasure to visit the Derbar. Food is always varied and full of delicious flavours which are quite distinctive from curry houses elsewhere. Lovely staff serving and the manager & his wife always very welcoming. Can’t fault it, everyone should try it.

We went to Derbar last night (Saturday), my wife and I, and another couple. We reserved a window table overlooking the high street. We were greeted by a fantastic smile and were ushered us to our table, and took our drink orders right away.The owner came over and explained and recommended some items on the menu. Mine was Spicy Aroma chicken which was divine(No 65). The menu is wonderful and between us all, we had a very broad selection of dishes All our choices were well flavoured and tasty. Its clearly a popular place with several larger groups in as well as couples like us but service was efficient and staff helpful and friendly.I would very highly recommend this restaurant if ever you are in the Royal Deeside, social or business .. you won't be disappointed

We ate here on two consecutive nights & wish we had gone back for a third evening instead of going elsewhere. There is a huge choice on the menu & we found the portion sizes just right. Lots of choice to suit all tastes from creamy to spicy. The proprietors are very attentive & friendly. They do a buffet evening on Tuesday & Sunday - I think it was £15 each. Well worth a visit if you like Indian style food. I had the best onion bhaji’s I have ever tasted. Our new favourite restaurant in Banchory.

A Saturday night and no-one else there when we arrived at 7pm but people quickly started to stream in! Always had great takeaways from here so we went here for a birthday and was a great treat! Food was fab and staff were friendly, will definitely be back!

Lovely food and excellent service. The poppadoms were served with a variety of delicious relishes and the food was tasty and plentiful.

Went to this restaurant early evening with my husband and four children, age ranging from 10 months to 11 years. The owners were at front of house and were lovely and made us very welcome.

For our 2nd visit it was great to find nothing had changed. Great food, great service all in pleasant surroundings. You are not rushed, staff more than willing to adapt to any requests you have, and the menu leaves you spoilt for choice.

With family moving into the Banchory area we were delighted to recommend this restaurant to them as we had eaten there before and been impressed. On Sundays visit we dined together there.

We went on buffet night and it was a popular choice with a lot of people. The food was t brilliant but that didn’t stop people eating enormous amounts and the buffet was having to be constantly replenished. Lovely owner.

Lovely meal the curry was so nice... Reasonably priced wine. The service was good and the food came quite quickly. I Would definitely recommend.

Lovely indian restaurant with friendly efficient staff. The menu had a good selection of chef specials along with the more traditional dishes you would expect to find. The food was well flavoured and tasty and we really enjoyed our visit. The vegetable pakoras were inedible as was the biryani. Both dishes were spiced to the max with chilli powder and tasted awful

Tuesday is buffet night. 4 starters and 8 mains. Ok if you like chicken. Only one lamb dish. No Dall so I ordered a tarka dall - never had chilli in a dall before so not for me. Desert was just chocolate cake and pouring cream.

We live 5 minutes walk away and have been going to the Derbar for many years.

The Derbar has a surprisingly large menu. Lots of stuff you don't see or have never seen before. E.g. Curry with whisky.bi admire the effort.

Arrived one Monday evening , only one guy in the whole restaurant. So after about half an hour just me and 2 of my friends in the restaurant it took an hour and a half for us to get our food where it arrives cold. I could wipe up a curry in half the time !!! Waiter was v rude.

Had a great takeaway with my daughter! Very tasty..Good portion sizes..Definitely worth a go.. reasonably priced too!

El Derbar es extremadamente impredecible. A veces es genial y nos encanta y al día siguiente de esta noche de curry) la calidad es pobre. Esta noche nuestro pollo era difícil y era duro y recocido o recalentados. De cualquier manera no era agradable. Los 4 platos tenían la misma queja.

On a recent business trip on Tuesday 4th July i went into this restaurant on the High Street just hoping to get some good warm food after a 7 hour drive & finishing late and hotel not doing evening meals anymore, I must say this is a real gem, the food was absolutely wonderful, i love chicken Pakoras starters after having a fantastic one 15yrs ago and this was up there with the very best, plenty of food even for a starter, well presented and very very tasty. Next the main course was again exceptional, not too much but still plenty of food for a very hungry man, the chicken i had was cooked to perfection, it just fell apart when i put fork in it, all the veg were great and you could taste every individual flavour in the dish and not just a soup like mixture, the Naan bread was fantastic, very light & tasty not stodgy at all like plenty i have experienced.

Went on the spur of the moment for a family meal. Service was very good, all the staff were very attentive. Place is clean and nice to sit in. Menu range was excellent and speed of food delivery was just fine.The main issue is simply that I've had better curries. There's nothing wrong with anything, it's just that the meat seems to be coated rather than really marinaded, and none of the flavours really stand out. If you're used to a big city experience (Glasgow, Birmingham or Manchester) then this is just so-so.It's a decent basic curry house. There are better options out there.

We are locals and the Derbar is our favourite place to eat or have take away. The food is excellent. The restaurant is modern the toilets are very clean and the staff are great, especially the owner. Lovely man.

Best Indian meal I have ever had. I'm not able to eat chilli so instead had a delicious Derber creamy korma. The rice was light and fluffy. The owner went out of his way to advise on the meals. Lovely selection of ice cream desserts. I had a yummy limoncello dessert .

It's been a long time since I've had a sit in at the Derbar however I'm a regular for takeaways and it's lovely!!!

The choice of food on the menu is overwhelming! It seems the more choice there is the harder it is to choose. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here and would recommend anyone in the area to give it a try.

This has to be one of my favourite Indian restaurant in Aberdeenshire. The staff were friendly and the building was very nice. I had vegetable pakora to start and it was first class. Not too much but not too little. Main course was a lamb madras with pilau rice and I have to say it was absolutely amazing. Full of flavour and hot but not overpowering 10 out of 10 for the food and service here. Definitely be back next time I am working in the town.

The Derbar is the perfect place for a group get-together. Tasty food, brilliant service and speedy meals. A great selection of traditional and more unusual Indian food.

This is a good indian. I know, because I've had a few in my time.I would have given this 5/5, if I'd only eaten here once. I went twice in one week with a colleagueFirst visit, no debate, 5/5. The Everest curry was a master piece, being both hot and tasty too. The other dish, and the sides we shared were excellent too.Second visit, had the Everest again, but found it a different experience from the preceding visit. It was hot, but lacked the tastiness of the previous one. The other dish, and the sides were again, fine.Would have given 5/5 if the second had matched the first.Happy to revisit, happy to reccomend.

Doesn't stand out form many other curry houses, but the staff were pleasant the restaurant is up steps from the mainstream and is quite spacious. the food was perfectly ok but but unmemorable. If I was wanting a currying that area I would happily go back, and would pass other Indian restaurants in its favour unless feeling adventurous.

My husband, daughter and myself had dinner here when on holiday to Banchory. We visited mid week and the restaurant was quiet but the manager/owner? took time to chat after we had finished eating, we very much appreciated this and his enthusiasm for Banchory. We had a lovely meal with generous sized portions.

We arrived very early, 4.45pm so we were the only customers. Our first impressions were of the friendliness of the waiter and the cleanliness of the restaurant. We did not feel in the slightest uncomfortable at being the only customers. It was beautiful. The food was delicious. Portions were ample. The naans in particular were the best we've had. Fresh fruit, unexpectedly, followed the meal as a palate cleanser and rounded off the meal perfectly. We were also provided with hot hand wipes. Can highly recommend this place.

Never been disappointed with the food here, and have been going for the last 20 years!Sometimes the service can be a little slow, but staff always welcoming, and you are never rushed out. Good size portions. Good for couples or large parties.

A large group of us ate here, fantastic choice of food, all reasonably priced. Food all served together which for 13 plus people was really good. Staff and management both friendly and accommodating.

This is a very attractive restaurant with attentive staff. All quite large there were only a few tables occupied. I had nice onion bhaji to start which were pre prepard and heated up. Tasty and nicely presented with fresh crisp salad. The curry was something I hadn't had and was one of their specials. The lamb was tender and of good quality but there was a tinge of something non-authentic in the sauce which made me feel uneasy. I cannot put my finger on it but maybe a pre-made sauce or a manufactured condiment etc. The chapatis were very good too.Maybe I sound a but picky but it was just a feeling

We didn't receive the warmest welcome but the host quickly warmed up and came back to have a joke with us later on, I think possibly, he was just a little busy when we arrived.The food tasted great and service was quick. There is quite a big menu and the flavours of the dishes we had were good. A Samundri and I can't remember the name of the other dish but it was no. 60 on the menu.It was good value, you got plenty of food and as well as the usual things you'd expect at an Indian, there were a few more unique dishes which is what you'd expect from a decent Indian restaurant. On a tangent, there was a projector and screen in the restaurant, presumably they do some kind of special events or maybe show the football?

Menu has an interesting and varied choice for meat lovers (mainly chicken and lamb), but vegetarian choice is quite limited and uninspiring. Starters were tasty enough, but veggie main course was quite bland. Service - well, only got offered poppadoms 10 minutes after arriving when order was being taken, didn't get asked for more drinks despite all glasses and wine bottle being empty, not offered coffee or dessert and no hand towel or oranges at the end, which other tables got!

Draft indian beer - very nice. Curry range is good and good service. Modern feel to dinging area with very large glass windows and roof painted white.

Enjoyed a delicious meal in Derbar with my husband. It was a Saturday night and the restaurant was really busy so I'm glad we booked a table. Staff were friendly & attentive. The menu was extensive so it took us ages to choose. The food was delicious and good portion sizes too.

On the night my family and I visited it was nicely presented and a lovely relaxed atmosphere.The staff were very helpful and once food was served we were left to enjoy. No hassle, no interruptions. ...but staff at hand when required.The service could have been quicker but it suited the quiet, relaxed evening we were looking for.Food delicious!! No complaints whatsoever and will certainly visit again.Only down side is that the restaurant access is only via an external flight of steps, which won't suit everyone.

We came here with my family and long time partner in december on bufet night. The atmosphere was fantastic, and was the food. However, the waiter didn't remember our order for nan bread and we had no choice but to eat the freezing cold ones from the buffet plates. We also didn't get any table service, as all of our plates hadn't been cleared away, wile other tables clearly were.

Good service, modern decor and most of all great Indian cuisine. The menu is extensive and the flavours are genuine and intense. Naan breads are enormous and the quality of everything we had was very good. In summary this is as good an Indian as I have had anywhere.

We have been visiting Derbar for over 10 years now. In all that time we have always had excellent service and delicious food. It doesn't matter what you chose from the menu, everything is served quickly and the quality is always first class.They will cater for individual tastes and will make your dish as hot or mild as you would like.Overall probably one of the best Indian restaurants we have experienced.

We were recommended this Indian restaurant by our Indian friends but didn't visit until last night. Wow! What a find! The restaurant is light and airy and the staff were excellent. The menu was extensive but we were able to have a drink whilst browsing. We all had mixed platters for starters and every on that platter was delicious. We all had different dishes for the main course and once again they were delicious. The food was so different in flavour than your average Indian restaurant and we will certainly return.

When we lived in Banchory this was a regular haunt, now we always make a pint of visiting when we are home. Always good and tasty food and still very pleasant to sit in the light and airy restaurant during the long summer nights. Service is good too.

Awesome food, quick service - will use again - bit weird having a TV projector screen up with football on if you were sitting in but was a busy place

Went here while visiting friends in Scotland. It was a busy Saturday night but we had got there just before the rush. It could be seen very early that they needed more waiting staff as we had to wait 20 minutes for drinks and papadoms. The main course was also very late coming out.Drink refills would need to be asked for two or three times before they arrived.My friends had mentioned that they had never waited so long for the food so it was probably a one off.When the food did arrive it was good food on,y spoilt but the slow service. Hopefully just a blip I. Normal service.

Great Indian food, absolutely lovely space. Loved watching the skylarks above us (through the skylight) while tucking into some very yummy grub.

We enjoyed a lovely meal. Set us up for our trip further down the road. Very good staff very attentive without being overbearing. We were delighted to find such a modern Indian restaurant with up to date decor and even the background Indian music was fine. The reason for the title of this review is because the whole place was spotless even the toilets very nice change for a busy restaurant. We hadn't booked a table but we were seated unlike a restuarant further up the road who said 30 min wait. As we are on the road very often we will be back. The only downfall is that from the road it looks bad with the signage for the empty shop unit downstairs .

My family and I visited this restaurant the other night and had a very nice evening. The poppadoms and condiments were delicious. I had the onion bhaji as a starter, which was nice but much spicier than any other bhajis I've ever had. I tried a new dish for my main course that I hadn't had before, and I was very happy with it! All in all it was a nice meal and I would be happy to come again.

went to this restaraunt for the first time. was not sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. very nice atmosphere, with very good food, brillian staff, very nice atmosphere, & good price. will definately be back!!!!

Went for supper tonight, ordered something different for a change, though my husband stuck to his usual! Didn't like mine and despite the fact I didn't complain they noticed I wasn't eating it and exchanged it for another meal at no extra charge, very impressed considering it was my fault. Even offered more rice etc free of charge. Very helpful.

Really enjoyed the Debar. Mixed starter for two was great value and perhaps too much when ordering poppadoms/pickle tray as well as a main though!Both mains were good, although my friend did say the lamb although very tasty was a little dry and perhaps would have preferred the chicken.Just a minor quibble as was a good overall experience.

Tasty authentic indian cuisine, fast friendly service and a very central location. Be aware that the restaurant is up some steep stairs !!

Three of us dined on a Friday night. It wasn't very busy but starters took almost 30 minutes to arrive. Main courses then took over 40 minutes after the starters, but yet there were A LOT of takeaway customers coming in, ordering, collecting their meals, and leaving again. It seems to be that once they have you seated, they cease to care. We did point out that the waiting time was too long and that many take-away customers had been through and we were met with a very brash response from an extremely rude manager. Food was fine and tasted nice but none of us will be back.

We love Indian food and regularly eat out- tried this restaurant when we first moved to the area a few years ago, first couple of times was really good followed by not so good meals and service so we stopped going. Recently returned to see if things had changed and am pleased to say we have now been 3 times in recent months and each time the food has been really enjoyable so this restaurant is firmly back on our preferred list. The restaurant is situated on the main street just beside the traffic lights at the park, it has a steep set of steps to the entrance which some people may find difficult. On our last visit on Saturday the restaurant was the busiest I have seen it, a good sign. I find the staff which has changed are much better now, the food quality is good, the chicken in the curry was really nice, portion size was good, just right. Enjoyed the roti breads also.I paid a visit to the ladies and found them to be spotless so top marks all round. We will be be back for sure for as long as these standards continue.

Had a fantastic meal, dined with a few friends and the atmosphere was excellent, nice hub hub yet still able to have a quite friendly conversation. The service was well timed to allow you to enjoy your meal and not feel rushed with a sensible period between courses to allow you to be ready for the next. Cost was very reasonable for the three of us.

Staying on the Caravan Club Site in Banchory and found this place listed in the handouts about Banchory. Thought we'd give it a try and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good food well cooked and presented, friendly and efficient service, and reasonably priced, If we return to the area we'll definitely revisit

Visit this Indian twice a year when fishing in Aberdeen. Food is tasty and portions are generous and prices are reasonable. See you in October!

One of the tastiest King Prawn Curries I have had in years. We both had wonderful starters too, the fish pakora was heavenly. Only slight down side was that we were there on a very quiet night and the service was not as quick as it could have been. Otherwise would highly recommend.

This is the first time I have been to Derbar and I am really looking forward to going back. I had the Lamb tikka starter, very tasty, others in my group had pakoras which also looked very tasty. Good portion too. For my main I had the Chicken K2, which was one of the best curries I have had. Big chunks of tikka chicken and a delicious tomato spicy sauce, finished the lot. My only criticism was the service. Restaurant wasn't really that busy but seemed to take an age to get our drinks, that's really poor when it's quite quiet. The food is great though and will return very soon.

We had a meal at Derbar on Sunday night, having met up with our husbands, who were walking across Scotland, and had reached Banchory.What a lovely restaurant. The décor, food and service could not be faulted, and the relaxed ambience helped the boys to relax after a long gruelling hike that day.I would highly recommend.

Food ok...but could have been warmer. Garlic nan was awful, green and didn't taste of garlic at all. The restaurant was freezing cold, even with my coat on!

Whilst the food is relatively good and they do a spectacular King Prawn starter, the service on the last two occasions has been very poor. It would appear that there is difficulties in trying to balance restaurant and carry-out orders.

Had a great meal here.It has a large varied menu.The place has a good atmosphere.The staff were very courteous.(I think the waiter who seems to upset a previous reviewer was probably helping behind the scenes?)Will definitely be going back.
