Davenport Fish & Chips in Stockport

We live nearby and have stopped going here, much better options nearby. Quite greasy with everything mushing into the paper by the time you get home. Can often taste the oil is old and needs changing, not worth the premium prices. On the plus side, it is always spotlessly clean.

Had a take away tonight, usually lovely so don’t mind paying the overpriced chippy price, but tonight it was awful, tasteless no salt and vinegar when asked and totally taste less. Will be thinking twice now about returning after been regular customers

Staff member unfriendly and glowering at me. I'd had to leave the shop due to my child having adhd meltdown (due to being tired) and vile gossips being near the shop. I came back when she'd calmed down and wasn't hitting me anymore to be served by brown haired woman with angry face. Won't be using again.

Good portion sizes, reasonably priced, parking usually available for free just outside. Menu clearly labelled with vegetarian options. Nice n clean inside. Cash only - just like most chippys and their is a cash machine outside Spar - 100 yards down. Always a pleasant service when I go:)

WOW & WOW £8.50 for pudding chips & gravy with a small slim can of coke!! It was piping hot and not tasty at all. Gave it to the dog & pigeons in the street behind.. I don’t mind paying if it’s nice but that was awful!’ Two fellas stood like mafia bosses rude & ignorant while young lady serves.. Can see where all the profits go because it’s not on the food!! Absolutely terrible & shameful!! Avoid it big time !!!!!

This £5 worth of food. That's a rip off I'm anyone's book. I would have took it back but my son is hungry.

very overpriced undercooked and lukewarm

Last 2 times had hard chips uncooked, priced a bit high if they can’t be bothered stirring the chips around. Nothing worse than 20% of the cups being raw

The best chippy in the area by far. Chips are great, fish lovely, battered sausage a hit with my kids, staff nice. Nothing more to say.

Drove here on lunchbreak and waited for it to open CASH ONLY. I dont have time to travel to an atm for you. Waste of time, went to the bakery next door which was excellent.

Used to be great. I’ve moved back to the area and thought I would try it again. I wish I hadn’t as it was poor. £5.50 for sausage and chips and the chips weren’t cooked. There wasn’t even an excuse if it being busy as I was the only one in there Unfortunately at that price and quality, I won’t be using again.

I eat chips here after college sometimes, they are some of the nicest chips I have ever eaten. I would 100% recommend to anyone else.

Ordered fish and chips,got home opened two lots of chips.Went back got fish,got home threw most of it away it was Luke warm and greasy.

I've loved this chippy since it opened and happy to pay cash but the prices have gone ridiculous. £18 for standard fish and chips, 2 tubs of curry curry, 1 tub of peas and a battered sausage. Certainly won't be going very often

In 2023 one would expect card payments were welcome service without a smile food order was ok nothing great certainly not value for money

Asked for salt and recieved the entire sea. The chips were overly salted and the fish was just something else. Really disappointed after seeing such promising reviews. £13 in the bin.

They just dont care in here. Miserable staff. Expensive. Fish and chips are greasy as the friar doesn't shake the oil off properly. Felt sick after eating. Peas and gravy too salty, curry full of sugar. Never again.

This place is a hidden gem. The staff are lovely and there Fish & Chips are fantastic. Lunch time the portions are enough for two !!!! Came here with a dementia client & elderly clients, they love it xx

Since moving over from Canada 3 years ago, this has got to be the best fish and chips place I have ever tried. Batter is light and crispy nicely seasoned with some salt and vinegar at the end. Fish was flaky and succulent. Chips were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy from the inside. Mushy peas were silky smooth, the best I’ve ever tasted. This will now be my go to place.

Wasn’t the hardest of orders for a fish and chip shop to get right, a fish and chips. With the fish being usually the most expensive item on the menu you’d expect the time and effort went into preparing it. The fish was considerably greasy as well as sticking to the the grease proof paper and doesn’t look at all appealing once you get it home on a plate, the batter was very thick and even with another 6 minutes as they mentioned their cooking times were, still wouldn’t have been enough to get through it Chips were run of the mill, with being overcooked/undercooked throughout and very tasteless IMO, Curry sauce was as sweet and had little kick too it. Price wasn’t great at all, considering there are many local takeaways which I could get more for my money. Would expected better considering there isn’t much competition in the area, but then again maybe that’s the reason for this review. Save your money

Whatever you order for here will be good, I’ve never been left disappointed when ordering from here. That being said it is a bit pricey.

You need deep pockets but the fish are huge, as are the portions of chips. Really nice, clean chippy. Only minor downside is that the curry sauce is the spicy one, rather than the fruity one you'd normally expect from an english chippy. Very nice though!!

Disappointed that even in the middle of a pandemic, cash is the only accepted payment option.

Horrible never again £13.00 for 2 fish and chip but on the plus side I can now do an oil change on the car just off the soggy fish well done 👏. PS, I may even have enough to do the wifes car off the chips!!

The food is cooked to perfection the staff really friendly, this is a very popular place so sometimes there's a short wait for your order as they only cook so many items at once. This shows there attention to detail, and commitment to cooking great quality food.

Times are hard, you need to up your game, I have never had such disgusting fish and chips! The fish batter was too thick so has absorbed the fat, I assume the fat was also not hot enough as otherwise I have no idea how you would make it this bad. The old grease smell in the car on the way home was enough to put us off but at £13 for we decided to give them a try. We are now regretting this as I have a layer of grease in my mouth. Avoid this chippy, dont waste your money, go elsewhere!

Poor,came highly rated fish was the greasiest I've had in a long time. Chips were similar never again.

Love this place. The food portions are very big and the food is great. the staff are fast to serve you so your not waiting long.

Best chippy in the area (and the best I've ever had!). Their gravy, curry sauce and battered sausages are out of this world 🤤 And of course the chips are delicious as well. Good portion sizes and great value. Especially impressed with how they've handled the Covid situation: all staff wearing masks and gloves and a strict limit on number of customers in the chippy at any time. Love this place. I'm so lucky it's only round the corner from me 🤩

Very professional as far as distanceing chips are o.k a few hard ones run out of haddock & the cod wasn't too brilliant reasonably priced helpful staff

It used to be the best in the area but the last few times I used it the fish was swimming in grease . The batter stuck to the wrapping so ended up just eating the fish itself . Now go to Grove Chippy in Hazel Grove [ opposite the Wilfred Wood ] , brilliant

Have been here quite a lot of times , sometimes the food has been lovely but sometimes it hasn’t , not sure why maybe it’s the different times of day or different staff.

Lunch time visit. Nice friendly staff. Fantastic portion (light lunch was in fact huge!), and great value. No problem recommending this place for a (not so) light lunch!

Refused to do me a lightly battered fish , was at least a £30 order .... Said there were closing , a 8.41 , rude and 0 customer service , they a lot better fish and chip shop in Stockport who cook fish to order .... Avoid .........

Used to be really good but the last two times the fish has been horribly greasy that even stuck to the grease proof paper , my friend gave up with the batter and through it out . Shame it was the best , wont go again I suggest the owner wraps a fish and try’s it after 10 minutes

Very expensive and not great service

This is a very busy place, called in at 12.30pm for lunch.Very busy but the girls serving had it all under control.A great idea having a lunch time menu, smaller portions but perfect for lunch time.Its that busy the fryers are very busy which make everything so fresh, nothing is sat in warmers to long.Really fantastic food at a great price.

Huge portions and great taste, best chippy around for miles!

Went there last week. queue a mile long so had high hopes for quality fish meal. What a rip off -fish was whole fillets of smallest cod, which was from fish that should never have been landed. =less thn half an inch thick at shoulder, and wafer thin at tail. -smothered in thick batter, which was far too thick to cook properly and become crisp. When server picked it up it was not rigid enough to support its own meagre weight. It was soggy to say the least. Chips were the usual- large numbers of bits because of not quality selected spuds, for chip shops. Is there anyone of my age group (70s) who acn remember good chippies, and then inform me if there is a good one anywhere near Stockport.

Best chips in Stockport. Bar none! They do all the usuals as well, fish, scampi, chicken, pies and kids meals including fish fingers. Lovely people, and very clean shop. Often a little wait, as they are popular, but worth it. Cash only

Clean, friendly and most importantly delicious!

They are meant to open at 5 pm, but are always late. Today at 5.15 chips still not ready. No apology, no smiles. They don't care. When they are served they are swimming in oil. I asked for a refund.

Delicious fish and chips and great value too. Lovely, freshly cooked cod, firm, crispy chips and a generous helping with a Standard portion. A meal for two less than £10. The best in the area by far.
