There will be many who mourn the passing away of a favourite local restaurant - the Danube! Went by today to discover that it is no more and that in it's place is going to be another place, thankfully, called "Taylor's Restaurant'.

Went to Danube with friends for Saturday lunchtime. It wasn't very busy, but I hear it does get quite busy at times. The atmosphere was pleasant. The waiter was friendly and helpful. The food is very nice, and you get a really classy meal for your money.

We were heading for the chain restaurant around the corner but Danube looked so inviting we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. It was a bit like stepping back in time, both in terms of the decor and service, but in a fabulously intriguing and welcoming way. The wine was delicious, the food choice was refreshingly different and everything served to us was tasty and aromatic with a ‘home cooked’ freshness we were delighted with. Prices are surely unbeatable? We had two three course dinners plus coffee and carafe of wine for £55. We will definitely be back....

I didn't actually eat here, but found from t'internet that they do a vegan meal. We were briefly in Newark on Trent and had to go to a 100th birthday party in Essex. Not wanting my daughter's boyfriend to be left out of the standard party food, I spoke to Ramone at Danube. We discussed what she could prepare for James and a cost. Not only did I agree to pick it up on a Thursday (we were travelling mid morning Friday) but she then agreed that I could go in before their opening hours on Friday and collect it then so that it could be made up fresh and the sandwiches not get soggy - what a star! Long story short, we arrived in Essex with Mushroom filling sandwiches, vegetable pate, pecan pie and sweet potato fries all for just £10 and we all reckon James had the best food at the party! Thank you Ramone and John the chef for making all the effort but for being a part of not allowing a young man to be left out of a great celebration, just because of his beliefs. You are complete stars. Oh and by the way, we will come back and eat in your restaurant when we are back next year, it looks absolutely gorgeous.

This is a lovely welcoming place to eat. The menu is excellent value, starters average £6 and the mains £14. The two and three course menus are fabulous value. Drinks are very reasonable too. Our first visit but it won't be our last. Starters were Duck pate and Nolalox. The pate was delightful only slightly spoiled by the brioche style toasted bun. Nolalox (lightly smoked salmon) was melt in the mouth and perfect. Mains were the Ox cheek, which lived up to all the positive reviews and Wiener schnitzel, which was also very good. After so much food we forced ourselves to share a Creme brulee which again was perfect.

We were in Newark overnight and stumbled across Danube when looking for an evening meal. I was weary and not really 'in the mood'! However, from the moment we were greeted as we walked in it turned into a lovely evening .... the service was excellent - very keen to please and very professional, the food was tasty and well presented, the carafe of wine was really good and the atmosphere very pleasant. An excellent find and good value too. Very good to be offered good quality, well cooked food that is a bit different for a reasonable price. We would definitely go again - I note they also just do coffees etc in the day, a nice place for a break if out and about. Service with a smile.

Four of us called in for lunch. Nobody else in the restaurant as we were early for lunch, so chose our own table. The lunch time menu was varied and offered a 2 or 3 course meal at a realistic price. My husband and I happened upon this delightful restaurant throughTrip Advisor. From the minute we walked in we were hooked. Ramona welcomed us and showed us to a lovely table. We felt like we had just been seated in her dining room at her home. [Later we found out that she is the owner! So that was pretty spot on] She went out of her way to make sure that we had just the right wine to go with our entrees, allowing us to sample a few before selecting a bottle. We ordered goulash (first time ever) and a pork dish that was amazing. We shared an apple strudel that was delicious as well. Since we will be traveling to Romania in July, we wanted to try Eastern European cuisine. An added bonus was when Romona sat down with us and helped create a travel itinerary for our trip to Romania. We were so pleased with our experience here and hope that we have more like this in Bucharest and beyond.

What a lovely place to eat. A warm welcome taking coats and making sure we're happy with the table. I visited with family including teenagers and an 87 year old and the menu had a great range to suit everyone, light meals, 2 or 3 course set price or a la carte and no pressure for everyone to order off the same menu. The service was attentive and the food delicious. Mostly authentic Austria/Hungarian but enough choice to suit most tastes. Went to Newark 4 days ago. Looking for somewhere to eat and passed this restaurant. Sister is a Gluten Free Vegan. Hostess was lovely & friendly. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and explained all the options available for my sister, and also which dishes could be altered to make them suitable. Sister had the Chickpea, Butternut, Red Onion & Cranberry Tagine served with vegetable rice. I had the slow roast Pork with a Red Wine Jus, Chunky Paprika Chips and seasonal veg. It was the most amazing, delicious meal I have ever eaten. The pork melted in your mouth, the red wine jus was to die for and the service was outstanding. Sister said Tagine was absolutely delicious. Congratulations, the decor was beautiful(love the blue & gold), the ambient music was relaxing. I will definitely be returning and recommending to family & friends. Only downside not sure about disabled access as I am disabled & had to negotiate 2 steps at entrance with help of hostess.Would advise checking in advance.

I've been to Danube's a few times now as the service is always so warm and friendly. It's our 'go to' restaurant in Newark for lunch if we are in town or having family over for the weekend. We were spending a few days in Newark for my husband's birthday and the Danube's menu featuring dishes from countries along the Danube appealed. We were very warmly welcomed into the restaurant by a woman who we discovered was the owner. My husand chose the Weiner schnitzel, which he said came with a divine sauce, so he was very pleased. I had the soup followed by slow-cooked ox cheek which just melted in the mouth. My husband had skipped a starter so that he could have the apple strudel for dessert. I didn't feel I could manage a dessert, but our hostess cut a portion off of the strudel and gave me a small plate "just in case" I wanted to taste it. I did manage a bite. Lovely. Stayed in Newark for 2 nights and the Danube was recommended by our hosts. I'm so glad we went. The menu is based on foods from the countries that lie along the Danube River so included dishes that we don't normally see in British restaurants. I had the chicken paprikash (spelling?) and a lemon meringue dessert. Both were delicious. The hostess was friendly and chatty as well as professional. I will certainly return when I am next in Newark.

As we have already experienced the Danube in the past, we knew it will be a great place for our wedding lunch! Everything was excellent from the beginning. The whole restaurant was booked exclusively for our celebration which made the experience even more special. The tables were laid beautifully, the food was amazing. Ramona has suggested us few choices and all gets were free to choose depending on their preferences and eating habits. I highly recommend the home made tomato soup, the duck pathe and the slow cooked pork leg. All guests were so happy, relaxed and delighted! Nothing was too much trouble. Without even asking our niece who is alergic to nuts has received a plate of canapes specially for her and our 1 year and 10 months old has eaten all her three course meal. Ramona made us feel like home and she and her staff made our day even more special! Thank you very much, Ramona! Well done team!

Danube is a small restaurant with a lovely calm atmosphere, it has fresh decor and the food is delicious. They offer a lot of deals and seasonal menus, i've eaten here mid-week for lunch as well as on valentines day for dinner and both times it was flawless. Service is fantastic and prices are very affordable. I'll definitely be eating here in the future.

We had some very good, wholesome and interesting dishes from along the Danube. The wine list was very comprehensive and the owner Ramona was very welcoming.

In terms of food quality and service I have little to add to many of the other four and five star reviews here. I will note a few specifics that pushed it up to five stars for me.Firstly was the service. The staff were uniformly pleasant and polite. One of our party of five had a disability which caused us to have to both delay our arrival by half an hour, which was accommodated without complaint. Food was a little slow but unlike many places the time was explained and accounted for, staff did not leave us feeling forgotten, and the freshness of the dishes explained the time taken. One of our party was a native of Eastern Europe, and was able to compliment on the fantastic standard of the Goulash and the Ox Cheek dishes. The beer and wine choice and quality was excellent, and I should note the views as well, being near the castle were very nice. Perfect for an early Mother's day meal and heartily recommended.

I have been here twice now as my first visit was so good. The service is very friendly and efficient. I ordered the goats cheese starter followed by the salmon, and I was quite surprised at how very flavoursome all the food was, even down to the potatoes. I can recommend this restaurant very highly and will definitely be returning again. Prices are also very good.

Arrived last night, Friday 24th march, for my booking at 7.30. Place was packed and no table for 4 available. Greeted by waiter and asked for my name. Started to usher us into the bar where one table was hastily pushed against one already there and we were told that this was our table. They had clearly missed my booking, but acted like it was completely normal to squeeze us in front of a walkway, opposite the kitchen, wedged between a wall and a pillar! Luckily we found somewhere else to eat so I asked for my coat.Enquired as to what had happened and the waiter finally admitted that they hadn't booked my table, despite me booking it two weeks ago.Such a shame as I had taken my future boss and his wife there as the meals we've had in the past were really good!

My realistic marking would be Average to Good.Ate in the evening. Agree with other reviews that staff were pleasant and helpful.Wiener Schnitzel perfectly acceptable but deserts sampled disappointing.Lavatories scruffy and need more attention than they get - beers interesting and unusual, but a little overpriced.

We're regulars to the Danube; probably a trip every other month. Love the food (the ox cheek is so good it's a fight not to have it every time!) and the service is friendly all year round. Great lunch time deal but worth it for a Krombacher or 3 every time!

Never fails to please. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. If there is something you don't like on your choice they will try and alter it, if they can of course. Have had Girlie nights there, taken friends and just us. Everybody enjoyed the different food. My husband and friend used to go to a restaurant just out of town when travelling back from the races but always go there now as we have never had a bad meal. My husband was a bit wary of the beer at first but really enjoys it. I love the deserts too! We have been all year round.

I always find its good to be mindful we're so entitled nowadays to critique places from the comfort of our sofa's, and we're all critics aren't we - so I'm going to be very thoughtful before criticizing the shabby toilets or some crazy detail I'm probably not qualified to talk about. I was grateful I could eat out with some good company in a nice place. We went on a Sunday, with a Christmas present voucher, it was fairly quiet, but we were treated really nicely. The waiter impeccable and friendly, clearly knew how to do his job and we ordered the 3 course ala carte menu. The food was well portioned, tasty, and I couldn't really find too much to fault. Perfectly priced, I would definitely go back. The décor is fairly classic and a nice ambience especially if you can get a table in the window. I thoroughly recommend it, would go back

We went to the Danube on the basis of your reviews. The restaurant décor was nice and the service was friendly. However, the food was disappointing. The "Wiener Schnitzel" turned out to be very thin slices of nondescript flat meat in fish-and-chips style batter with fish-and-chips style chips - all deep fried. This may be what the good people of Newark view as haute cuisine, but to anyone who has tasted the real thing it was a mess. The bottle of Romanian "Sauvignon Blanc" did not help.

Not the Blue Room any more called the Brasserie 32 . Service very slow, food still of a good standard but not a la carte any more . Which is a shame used to be a wonderful experience.

Beautiful food for their Christmas menu. Six satisfied customers. The macaroni cheese topped with pigs in blankets was very filling and flavoursome. Nice traditional pub atmosphere.
