This is a great little restaurant/coffee shop, very quirky with great food. At least it has been since we moved to Hawick 3 years ago and until Lockdown we visited quite regularly and I’ve posted a number of 5 star reviews at regular intervals. Until today. We decided to celebrate the end of the most recent lockdown with lunch at Damascus drum and ordered a large plate of mixed ‘maze’ to share with one apple juice. The price was £16.00 and whilst this would have been reasonable if there’d been enough to eat, we were surprised that the portion was to say the least ‘mean’. We were both surprised that what we were given, whilst being a fair portion for one was in no way adequate for two especially given the high price of £14 for the portion. I enjoy Middle Eastern cuisine and often make my own hummus and baba ghanoush, added to this were some wrapped vine leaves a little salad and some olives and a couple of bits to accompany. At a very rough estimate, about £4 -5 ingredients. ‘!!We will return in the hope that this was some sort of post lockdown hiatus which will be reversed. It would be such a shame if this was to be ‘the new future’

What a great find! This little cafe is tucked away down a side street near the heritage centre, we found it by accident and had planned to eat lunch at the heritage centre cafe and am very glad we detoured! The cafe also sells books and rugs, serves Middle Eastern fare including a dish of the day, Mezes , falafels, wraps, cakes etc We had the dish of the day which was a feta pie with salad and mezes and delicious coffee. We could have stayed for ages and I ended up buying a book as well. Great ambiance, truly lovely food that was a delight for us vegetarians and made a day out around Hawick and the region absolutely perfect. There is a large car park on the outskirts of town which is free. The car park has half a dozen long spaces for motorhomes and you can park overnight there for free as well which is a great opportunity for seeing more of the town.

Our first visit, since the beginning of the year, and like a previous reviewer, we’ve missed this excellent Coffee shop/Restaurant. Quirky, charming, friendly with the most interesting dishes you could hope to taste, always different but always delicious and the coffee is perfect. We had lunch today and the price was silly, they’re part of the government scheme to help people get out more. The Covid precautions are very good and the restaurant has lost none of its charm. Finally, there was lots of laughter in the kitchen and the place was busy as they’d put tables outside on the lane overlooking the river. DELIGHTFUL We’ll be back

My favourite cafe in Hawick and have missed it so much. The subtle partitions enhanced the cosy atmosphere. I had to question the cost (£2.90 for latte and carrot cake) but was told that the cafe was part of the gov 50% off scheme. Absolute bargain. I’ll be back !

The food was good but the grumpy cook ruined our 1st and last visit. She was hostile towards the girl at the front. A customer tried to converse and she was just really grumpy, perhaps a bad day but it was tense. In these days being nice isn’t hard! The front of house girl deserves respect. She was very well presented and polite.

Informal, friendly and Very good light food. Home baking, home made soups, sandwiches and superb "artisan" breads are all I have personally tried (but there is more avail) and really do recommend them. It is in the Town centre, but not on the High Street (plus point!), near the "Heart of Hawick" and well sign posted. For a slightly different eating experience, (those with a sweet tooth will love the baking), if not, there is still plenty of choice!

Coffee is very good, wide range of options including decaff. I could not in fact finish the bowl and took the remaining old home with me. The burger was declared very good too. We left stuffed full, but with two pieces of cake(a slice of Chocolate and Stout, and a Pistachio one too) for when we did feel able to eat again!Service as usual was great.

It is fair to say that not many people would mistake Hawick for a Mediterranean town. Step inside the Damascus Drum, however, and you enter a different world. The menu is really interesting, based around Middle Eastern or Mediterranean dishes, which are varied and generous in size. These are light lunches, but for coffee and tea the place would be a great find too. The atmosphere is quite unique, as it is described as a bookshop, but it's hard to see how you could browse to buy while people are sitting up against the stacks of books - I like to think of it as a converted library. Maybe at less busy times the shop bit works well. For the purposes of this review I'm just concentrating on the food, which was delicious and a real culture shock given the location.

Oh my.....Sinking down into a squidgy sofa that embraced me like an old friend, I gazed at the walls of books around me and nestled into my little patch of Heaven. For nerdy, wordy bookwormy souls with a cake fetish and a fondness for caffeine, this place is a dream. I only popped in for a quick coffee to escape the rain, but stayed longer than expected, thoroughly enjoying the warm and friendly ambience and delighting in the quirky setting. Take a good look around as you wait for your food - it's intriguing. The former cobbler's shop has kept many of its original features, including a cast iron oven set into the corner, various cobblers' paraphernalia, ancient adverts etched on glass (Dales Gold Medal Dubbin etc) and a framed, yellowing certificate from the International School of Practipedics, awarded to S. B. Dalgleish in 1932!This is all oddly, yet agreeably complemented by the Middle Eastern artefacts around the place. Drums, an ancient tambourine, a silver coffee pot and richly-coloured rugs and decorative wall hangings lend the back room a touch of mystique - an other-worldly feel that is quite magical. Aqua blue paint contrasts beautifully with the rich reds of the weavings and the dark wooden floorboards, creating a cheerful yet relaxing feel.Did I actually consume anything? Why Yes! My Americano was devilishly strong, and I sipped it as slowly as possible to savour the dark flavour and make it last. The Carrot Cake is the best I've had anywhere outside of my own kitchen, beautifully moist with a real 'just baked' freshness. The frosting had a delicious caramel-like quality, and made me want another wedge immediately! I fell in love with this place, and can't wait to return. The authentic charm to be found here is truly unique, and could never be replicated. It's the one-off serendipitous blend of a lovely place, filled with good energy, run by warm-hearted people happy to be there, serving delicious soul food with a smile.Wonderful!

A different cafe in Hawick! Small, little tables, second hand books on shelves all around you and all for sale! There's even a book, on the counter, written by the owner! A very well travelled gent! The soups are lovely and so is the Scottish smoked salmon! Dog friendly which makes it great from my view!

The best Café in Hawick. We found it by a recommendation from locals. It's a café and a book store in one, you can pass your time by reading and enjoy the good mood that is somehow connected to this place. They have very good food and very friendly staff. Buy a copy of the "Damascus Drum" at the counter! It's a good read.

Having visited the café twice, We can highly recommend the coffee, food, staff, atmosphere, books, rugs and location for disabled parking. It is not a run of the mill menu but caters towards the vegetarian and adventurous palette. The food is freshly prepared, well presented and overall tasty.Definitely be back soon.

Fantastic Chilie full of flavour with tasty granary (& pumpkin seed ?) bread grated cheddar on the side with salad & sour cream.Mmmmmm a perfect lunchtime warming meal on a damp Saturday lunchtime with quirky vignette stories from the "writer in residence" to read at the table.. Highly recommend this cosy cafe, which we will use again if we visit Hawick.

Stumbled by mistake onto this little gem where you can have great coffee, pick a book, buy a book, a carpet or discuss everything there is under the sun! The owner authored a book called the Damascus Drum as well. I would strongly recommend stopping by when you are visiting the Scottish Borders region.

Haven't been in here for about a year now and its still a great place to eat or just have coffee. I had the chilli beef (once again) and its still delicious. The menu changes every day and everything looks delicious. Highly recommended.

Just off the main road through town, you can discover the Damascus Drum Cafe , where you can also find out why it has its unusual name.It is a comfortable and welcoming cafe, with a fairly wide menu, to suit most tastes.I enjoyed a Bagel filled with Brie and roasted peppers, Which was also served with a side salad. The Chai Latte was also creamy, delicately spiced and deliciousBy the way the Cafe has WIFI but does not accept credit cards. Prices are very reasonable and Damascus Drum is very relaxing place.

I love this little cafe. Warm and inviting, full of books and rugs, this place is like stepping into a different world. Good freshly-made food as well, although a little pricey, but that's my one and only criticism. If you're in the mood to kill a couple of hours somewhere, read a book, grab a coffee and bite to eat, this is the place! I could quite happily spend all day in here on my own.
