The perfect English pub! This secluded place in the centre of the Woolhope Dome is in a unique location, too, as geologists and geographers will appreciate. The food and the service were friendly and excellent. The atmosphere inside is the epitome of the classic English pub. The views from the front are lovely. Approach it from the west on the narrow road over the hills and through the fairy-tale-like Haugh Wood. The Crown Inn and Woolhope are worth a trip to visit their own right.

Celebrated with family for a meal, we were all looked after so well, attentive staff and a great selection of drinks enjoyed outside in the gardens before moving in and having a delicious meal, kids had pizzas, I had the belly pork which came with new potatoes, local organic leaves and 2 beautiful salads, I also had the padron peppers ( cooked perfectly) and cajon spiced corn on the Cobb. Couldn't fault at all. We questioned the bill at the end because we expected it to be more, one of my favourite eateries in Herefordshire. Excellent menu, perfectly cooked and served by lovely staff. 10/10

The Crown is in a pretty village deep in the Herefordshire countryside and it has won awards for its drinks, especially its range of ciders, including their own make. And very good it is too. They make a feature of this and also of their food, much of it locally produced. They're better at producing cider. The menu includes light bites, lunchtime deals, a la carte and specials - all a bit confusing. and when you get down to it, they're mainly a variation on steak, fish and cheese-y meals. For all that they make a feature of the Herefordshire steak, my partner's rump was decidedly tough and not that flavoursome. (OK we're spoilt because our local butcher, Andy Creese in Newent, is a five times winner of "Cotswold Butcher of the Year"). I just wanted something light, and settled for a baguette - not the steak, fortunately, not the cheese, as I'm allergic, so went for fish goujons. But why serve battered fish in a big bready baguette? With chunky chips. Just too much carbs. Additionally the service wasn't great. OK, we were a party of 16, but they knew that in advance. Even so we waited well over an hour for the first course and had to ask for someone to take our order for desserts (the ice cream's lovely). Waiting staff were very pleasant, but the pub wasn't busy and in the end we left more than three hours after arrival. The cider was very good, however.

I am not sure I was at the same pub as the previous reviewer as my experience was completely different - We were booked in for 1pm for a Fathers Day treat with my family - We were welcomed by the owner and his bar staff who, when asked, recommended we try the Kings Cider (produced by the pub itself). It was delicious - worth a try!As it was Fathers day, we decided to push the boat out and have all the courses - My wife had Welsh Rarebit from the specials board, and I decided on the Crispy Chilli Beef starter - Both were excellent - The Chilli Beef is now a firm favourite (and apprently you can have it as a main course size - a definite for next visit!) - The food did not arrive quickly -(This isn't fast food - take time to chat with your lunch/dinner guests - enjoy the experience) - but it arrived in good time for something that is prepared to order. Another round of drinks after the starter was enough to smooth us into the main course - We had the traditional Sunday roast - (Beef+ Lamb mixed for me, Pork for the wife, and Chicken for the kids) - This was presented well with an array of sauces and different gravy according to the meat type (eg. Rioja Wine Gravy for the beef) - with plenty of veg. - It was was hot - pan to plate. Puddings were also very good - Creme Brulee did not look huge, but was rich and tasty - I did not need any more after finishing - Overall, a very pleasant and gratifying experience -

Late booking (booked Saturday for Sunday), fit us in no problem, table of 4.Arrived at 12.20 and sat down, ordered food and drinks, at 1pm I was done with my drink and ordered another, at 1.30 our lunch finally appeared, not good at all, they really were not very busy, but seemed to be a bit all over the place, not a very good experience. When the food did arrive I think that they (The staff) thought it was fantastic, to be honest it was average, clearly a lot of it had been pre prepared as it was cold, so why it took so long was beyond me.Also to have a menu and charge extra (£2) for beef when it’s a Sunday lunch I think is really very poor.Needless to say I will not be going back in a hurry (if at all), pretty poor service and overpriced, and there are better places for Sunday lunch in Hereford.

Have been told about this pub/restaurant by a number of people and thought we'd better try it for ourselves. A lovely lunch with rather slow and inattentive service. If you're not in a hurry and fancy a leisurely 2 1/4 hour lunch then this place is certainly worth checking out. The food was really nice for all three courses. The wine list was rather limited but a nice glass was had by all nevertheless.I guess our only slight gripe was the slow service. We had to ask for dessert menus and then wait a further 30 mins for them to be served, having already waited 30 mins for the main course, waiting to pay, and generally feeling unattended to. However, we had a nice lunch on a lovely day. Reasonably priced at £25 / head for three courses and drinks.

Friendly, efficient service and a good range of wines, beers and cider; Stowford Press is local and our favourite. The menu offers something for everyone, well prepared and presented. The fish and chips and the Sunday roast beef and chicken are the best we have eaten for years. Roasts are served with all the traditional accompaniments and several vegetables, piping hot and cooked to perfection. The prices are appropriate too. We highly recommend this pub.

There was one other table for lunch but the food took 40 minutes to arrive and it was all distinctly below par and guaranteed to positively discourage a return visit. This pub and all who think big, fat chips with the skin on taste better than the skinny variety need a reality check. One of our party had steak which she ate but I felt sorry for her choice which looked drab. Drab seemed to be the word of the day as the one member of staff visible seemed unconnected with us and his job and catering in general. The cidre cooked ham was one slice submerged under the tidal wave of dry chips and not nearly enough for the price given it gave the dish its name. Deserts were all bought in and drab too. Woolhope is a semi picturesque spot and deserves better. So did we on that day.

Well a tale of two halves. After great experieces at some of the excellent places near to our new house in Bridstow...eg The Lough pool, Moody Cow and yhe Green Man we saw that this was a quite recommended place to eat lunch.Jane had a delicious seafood pie. Nice chunks if fish and really tasty. The vegetables consisted of simple frozen peas and could have been a bit more exciting mix of local item/s.My Steak and ale pie was a major disappointment. The steak was simply a few overcooked threads, a few mushrooms to complement. Not a single piece of meat was evident. No Ale noted at all.I complained to the owner and he replaced it immediately with a small steak. However the rest of the plate was the same rather sad collection that had been on the plate before.Seasonal vegetables were simply....very very over vinegared red cabbage and a broccoli shoot. The creamed potatoes lacked any butter flavour and resembled Smash. So as I said, very much a tale of two meals. Quiet on the day but nicely furnished. Good beers.Such a shame really.

Soup was the only starter we had and although very tasty, the bowls should have been fuller. The main courses were not so good, the duck was no better than average, the rib-eye steak was woeful, very greasy, over-cooked and under-sized. Because it was so small, the waitress brought another one out, but it was exactly the same! To their credit however, they did knock the price of the steak off the bill. Desserts were very small and quite pricey too. Never say never again but it will be quite a while

Heard good things about this place so thought we would try Sunday lunch. On arrival, pub looked very nice, not packed but busy. First thing I noticed was the price was higher than the website information, but not much, so not desperate, then realised that as a vegetarian, if I did not want the fish option on the specials board the only choice for me was the meatless roast. I had seen on the website sample menus the option of a lovely sounding nut roast so assumed (wrongly) this was what was on offer. Didn't want fish and chips for Sunday lunch so ordered this. Was so disappointed when my plate came with just roast veg, Yorkshire puddings (I did get 2) and a large portion of stuffing! Roast potatoes where hard and tasted like Aunt Bessie's, the extra veg was quite mean for 4 people and those who did get meat, only 2 thin slices, available only pink. Not sure why extra charge for beef as what came did not warrant it. All in all, sadly did not live up to the first promise and we left feeling overcharged for what we got.

Booked in advance for a table for four for Sunday lunch. Kept waiting for well over half an hour at the tiny bar. Yes, they were busy - great! - but felt like they were doing us a favour by eventually seating us (table wasn't laid, only three chairs - we sorted things out ourselves). Waited an age to be served and had nearly finished our drinks and bottle of wine when we asked the manager about waiting. " Yeah, it's coming!" was his reply. We expected at least a reasonable standard of service. Sure, if you've been greedy and accepted too many bookings for the kitchen to handle, then at least keep customers happy with some bread rolls or complimentary drinks when things go wrong. None of that here. Rack em and stack em. Food was okay. Pay extra if you want beef (even though it was like thinly sliced sandwich beef you can buy in a supermarket). Not sure about this place. Always confused when pubs want to masquerade as fine dining restaurants and charge their prices without having the care and attention to keep customers coming back. A shame.

Everything from the attentive and friendly service to the attention to detail with the meals, it was all spot on. I especially liked their Steak Frites idea of giving you the basic "French" meal of the steak and the fries and then offering you the many and varied options to add to it, such as the different butters, the options of greens/salads, etc.... All of which were locally sourced and homemade. One of us also had the Venison Burger, again with all of the options, which made a nice change from the norm of a beef burger in a stodgy bun.A great place and one that we will definitely be going back to.

We went easter monday for my dad's birthday, as we had seen on Facebook beautiful pictures of fish they had on offer...so we arrived at 6:45, the bar staff took our drinks order and left us with the menus. The menus are very simple and very expensive, basically posh ham egg and chips was £11. There was no fish on the menu except for battered cod so I have no idea where the fish was that was on Facebook. So we waited and waited for our order to be taken, to the point where another customer pointed out to the waitress that was serving him that we had been waiting a while, the waitress then came over and took our order, at 7:15 so 30minutes after we had arrived. We then waited until 7:55 for our dinner to be served, so 40minutes. I really wish I had taken a picture because we ordered the 6oz steak for £11, which says it comes with chips, and it was literally just a plate of French fries with a steak on top, no salad, no tomato, no mushroom, nothing. They put no effort into the presentation at all and for £11 you expect an onion ring or two! So please read the menu carefully because what it says is what you get. The staff were busy chatting to each other behind the bar so obviously could not apologise for the delay nor could they come and ask if we wanted anymore drinks whilst we waited. We were really disappointed and we definitely will not recommend the place nor would we ever go back which is such a shame as we'd been meaning to go and looking forward to it for ages!

We had a fantastic meal. The quality of food was very good. The menu had good choices with many different takes on the standard meals of other venues but, don't let that scare you off. The variations were all good moves. The Wild Boar pork chops with sour slaw were amazing! Quite often where the food is good, service is lacking, false or overzealous. That was not the case here, they managed to get the attentiveness right without being too much. We are looking forward to returning.

My elderly mother and I visited this pub for my birthday this week in the evening at 7 pm.As she is vegetarian , she'd rung up and asked if they had vegetarian food and was assured they did besides the curries that she can't eat. She had fish that was poached instead of battered ( she can't eat battered fish) and unfortunately it was very dry as if it had been standing around for a while. My curry was very average - cauliflower and spinach . It was nicely presented though naan was dried out and like cardboard. We did both enjoy the deserts and had the smaller ones. We particularly liked the amaretto ice cream with honeycomb though the banoffee was also nice. The evening was partly spoilt by very loud opinionated conversation from a customer at the bar concerning US politics, EU entry, Cheltenham races, local gossip etc. It was hard to carry out a conversation between ourselves as this was very intrusive and we did consider leaving at one point as it was so loud. I know it's difficult to control this sort of behaviour in such a small pub. We won't be going back and won't recommend the pub. Shame, as in 2013 when we went for Sunday lunch with my now late father, the meal was excellent .

Arrived to see this place heaving. Great to see a country pub so busy. However we booked a table but we're left waiting at the tiny bar for half an hour along with many other families. Felt like they were doing us a favour by finally seating us at a cramped table. No apologies. We were starving: uncomfortably so as they left us waiting and waiting. Lots of people looking around. Service slow and clumsy. A basket of bread with butter would have cost them peanuts and would have done a lot to give some breathing space on very slow kitchen service. No such foresight here. Took over 2.5 hours for two courses. Again no apologies. No atmosphere. No music. No special thing for a Mother's Day token: a rose, a choccie, a calypso coffee? Nout. Did they even know it was a special day for mums? Left feeling really dissapointed, nothing special. Food okayish. Not cheap. A real shame. I have no doubt they will have had a super day's takings but think in the long term they may lose out.

My husband and i booked our groupon meal for two at midday, we were looking forward to the meal and travelled some 20 miles to get there, my husband is disabled and doesnt get out that often. On arrival (early) we noticed a marquee and my husband asked the chap who was outside the pub cutting roses if he had a function on, we were then informed it was a funeral of a very well liked local man and most of the village would be attending. We were aghast at that and felt disrespectful and intrusive by being there and felt that we couldnt enjoy our meal at this sad time, it was made worse by the fact that the pub was next to the church. We cancelled our meal via groupon and the pub, and said to the young lad if we had been told there was a funeral at the time of booking we certainly wouldnt have come but chosen another day. A completely ruined day and no phone call from the management to apologise. Customer relations......???????

Had a great meal last year whilst on holiday so was looking forward to visiting again. This time we paid £30 for a Groupon voucher and saved it to use on our last evening, saved the best until last, however on booking I was told that they wouldn't accept the voucher because they were up to the limit of vouchers and they were too busy. They told me that I could book and pay the proper price on the menu. I explained I'd already paid £30 for voucher and Thursday night was only time I could use it as i was returning home but they were not interested and the Manager refused to speak to me or take my details. So if you have a Groupon voucher don't bother they STEAL your money but don't give you the goods. Total scam.

The homemade Crispy beef starter was top quality. My sirloin steak was delicious with the pepper butter, my husband ordered the extra pepper sauce to accompany, it was plenty to share, but I found it was a bit too strong with red wine, and was perfectly happy with the butter. The dripping chips to accompany were tasty, and the onion rings good too. My husband was a bit disappointed with his lamb shank pancakes for starters, the pancake had an odd texture and it overall was a bit bland, but he had steak too, ribeye, and it was lovely. My sister and bro in law go there often and love it, my sister loved the cuttlefish croquettes for her starter, and her steak and blue cheese sauce too. Annalisa was very helpful when ordering our meal.It was our first time. I'm already planning a trip back! A nice, country pub feel.

We were out for a walk in the area and happened to be in Woolhope around lunch time. The staff at the Crown found us a seat, even though they were busy, and we were pleased with our selection of local ales. The menu was quite limited for vegetarians, and the prices ranged from £5.50 upwards for a starter, £9 upwards for a main (and that was for a baguette), so rather pricey for a pub lunch. The soup was relatively flavourless, sadly, and the rib of beef baguette my husband ordered had definitely never seen a rib. However, the cheese souffle was delicious and very nicely done.Overall, it was expensive for what it was, and we wouldn't be keen to be back to dine again in a hurry. Perhaps better for non-vegetarians, but left something to be desired for all in our party.

Puddings are expensive 6.50 is the average. Chocolate brownie and ice cream, fruit crumble which didn't have much taste, the lemon tart was ok, but they couldn't find the raspberry coulis in the freezer. We waited half an hours for pudding! we ordered two French coffees, one coffee with Tia Maria and one filter coffee. this took ages to come as well. they got this wrong and we waited for about 15 minutes before the filter coffee came and then another ten minutes to get the milk despite asking twice. they even put the bill in front of us before we had our coffee. busy they may have been, but it didn't do a lot for us. not likely to go back . sorry.

The Chef was aware of this and kindly bought us a round of drinks as an apology - this was a very nice touch indeed. All the specials were fish, not something we liked so we were restricted to the main menu I ate ham egg and chips. The ham was delicious as was the homemade pineapple chutney. To be picky the duck eggs needed another minute cooking. My friend had the Hereford hop baguette. A good choice with lots of cheese and a really tasty baguette. We could really have shared this. Other choices were steaks, burger chicken breasts. I think the lunch menu needs light bites expanding. We did debate a starter with chips but otherwise stick with the bread! Sound cheerful service. We had eaten well at another pub in Fownhope the previous night and were expecting better at the Crown, given previous reviews. We were disappointed. Between the four of us we had a variety of steaks which were all good, although the serving of beef dripping chips was a bit paltry. For desert, my creme brulee was fine but nothing special as was the cheese board. The most disappointing aspect was the service: it was poor bordering on - at points - inhospitable. It was a Saturday night and the place was busy (but that's not unexpected!). Having been shown to our tables, we were left alone for at about 15 minutes: no menus: no order taken for drinks. We had to go to the bar to get someone to come across which they did, with menus. Having taken our drink orders and returned with our drinks, we decided on our choices. But no sign of a waiter/ waitress interested in serving us. We then had to go up to the bar again after 15 minutes to ask them to take some orders for our food. The food came 25 minutes later, so we'd been there nearly an hour before eating. When it came to deserts again we had to go up to the bar to get them to come across and take out order. Others - probably locals - seemed to be getting more attentive service (but perhaps that was just paranoia setting in on our part). I eat out in a variety of different places regularly but this was the poorest service I've had for some time. On this showing it's not somewhere I'd rush back to.

Lunch for two, mid-week, pub not very busy. The menu was quite good with a varied choice and a daily board. I had the souffle with garlic mushrooms and it was superb. My wife had the garlic mushrooms and they were really good too with a large variety of wild mushrooms. We should have finished then because the mains were a great disappointment. I had the belly pork which did not have much flavour, One of the joys of belly pork should be the crackling. The dish was dressed very well with curls of crackling arranged over the meat. However I would defy anyone to have eaten this crackling. I did try every bit but I ran the risk of a trip straight to my dentist. My wife had the monkfish which again was very attractively presented on a hanging skewer over a bed of chick peas, a bit like the sword of Damocles. The fish was good but the whole dish was spoilt by an excess of chopped red chillies. Chillies are good but some folk don't like them too hot.The service was slow but that could be excused by the fresh nature of the food, the young man who did everything front of house was very pleasant but sadly the main courses spoiled the whole meal. Will we go again? Doubtful as there are so many much better pubs in the vicinity

Desserts were also fantastic - I would definitely recommend the banoffee Eton mess or poached pear.
