Crown and Thistle in Uttlesford

We have visited the Crown and Thistle a number of times and always enjoyed it. Last night it really exceptional: all 5 of us chose different dishes and they were all absolutely delicious. We shared green beans, also fantasticly cooked to perfection. The service was superb and friendly. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

We were on our way back south from Norfolk and popped in on the off chance. not far from the M11. Food was excellent nice cross over between pizza and Thai. Definitely recommend it. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Nice village as well.

What a disappointing evening we had at this Thai restaurant. From being rushed to our table, even though we were early, to sitting in a cold room, it was a really poor experience. The staff didn't seem to know what they were doing and the service was very rushed. The food was served in small portions and very average with not much flavour. Particularly bad were the tempura vegetables - 6 pieces of predominantly carrot and onion smothered in thick batter - completely inauthentic. Not much better was the side of broccoli which was steamed with what seemed like soy sauce poured over it. £5 not well spent. Other dishes were all disappointing. Will not be returning.

We came just before they where suppose to close the kitchen in the middle of the day. We got a platter for 2 with a lot of good stuff, served quickly from a nice waitor. A nice small city, will higly recommend it if you pass throug it :)

My husband and I were staying nearby so stopped for an evening meal. Booking a table online was easy. Staff friendly and the food was not only delicious but there was a wide range and good descriptions to aid choosing. Would recommend.

I often come here when I am in the area for work. It is such a professionally run, friendly and tidy place. The food is excellent and the service is so fast even when busy. The ales are kept very well and the ambiance excellent.

Unfortunately we travelled 35 mins. We feel let down. long wait & orders were wrong & food was bad!

Visited for early evening meal whilst staying at Saffron Walden. Lovely food and excellent service in quiet village venue. I had a chicken green curry and my partner a prawn red curry. Both excellent. The rice portion was exactly right for me but my partner would have liked more, which reflects fact she comes from India where rice portions are typically (too) large for good health!

Six of my family ate at The Crown & Thistle last evening, and had a lovely supper - one of the best commercial Thai meals I've had. My daughter-in- law is Thai, and a trained chef so I have high standards! We met the chef, and she excelled with the food she provided us - my mixed curry was delicious and had a very generous portion of mixed meat and prawns. The young woman who served us deserves special mention as she was friendly and courteous throughout. The pub was very busy (a good sign, especially on a Wednesday) and for anyone interested in such matters, is a dog-friendly zone. We had a two month old baby with us, so we contributed to the general hubbub! Top marks to The Crown altogether

First time here. The food was fresh and fantastic. I have to say, I ordered a vegetable massaman and it was the best I’d had since visiting Thailand. I would highly recommend, shame we don’t live closer. Almost all tables full and no issue with service from the two helpful waitresses. The photos in Tripadvisor don’t do this place justice.

Really disappointed with whole experience. Clearly not enough staff for the volume of people booked in for food. 2 young ladies trying to do it all, an hour & half wait for a main, no apologies & no one overseeing or taking responsibility. Won’t be going back!

The Crown and Thistle opened up early to accommodate us for my mother-in-laws wake and made us feel extremely welcome. The food was absolutely delicious and the teas and coffees went down well very when we arrived. The staff were all very professional, friendly and helpful right from the moment I contacted them on the phone through to the end of the evening. The range of drinks is excellent and I would highly recommend this pub if you are looking for somewhere to hold a wake or indeed for any occasion. We look forward to returning to the pub again soon.

Visiting friends and I had a fabulous early evening Thai meal where, as seasoned travellers, they remarked how good the food was. Ella, our waiting staff was unobtrusive yet attentive. I’ve never disappointed when eating there. As testament to this, the restaurant filled as the evening progressed.

It’s been a little while since we have visited this pub. However it’s nice to find that the Thai food is still up to its tasty high standard.

Visited the Crown and Thistle for a meal during a short visit to Gt. Chesterford The four of us all had an excellent meal. The Tamarind Duck was wonderful, so much of it. Beautifully presented. The cocktails were good too. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. If ever we're down that way again expect another visit from us all.

We often visited before the lockdown and always enjoyed everything about this pub and were so pleased to find our visit last night was just as successful. The pub is split into two areas to eat - one which is like a smart restaurant and the other around the bar with wooden tables and beams. in addition many locals just prop up the bar for a pint or there are outside areas too at the front and back. Staff were excellent as was tjhe food.

This is the second time that we have visited the Crown & Thistle. The food just gets better and better, you really can’t fault the presentation, taste and portion sizes. We really do love this place, highly recommended

We've come to Great Chesterford to go to the IWM at Duxford. I happened upon this pub online as a nearby place to eat. We couldn't have been happier with the welcome, the service or the meal. Recommend this to anyone visiting the area.

Paid £10 for a gin and tonic, feeling extremely ripped off for a casual drink with a friend. Shame as they’re going to push the younger people away with these prices!

2nd day in and this pub has excelled themselves... staff have looked after the customers, Gemma and Laura have been meeting and greeting customers at the door and have taken customers to their tables.... good to know we are being looked after x

I’m biased because this is my local, but the food is good, including a takeaway Thai and Pizza menu which can be booked online. Being careful to socially distance, so feels safe.

Best tai food I’ve had. Had a couple of sides as well as a noodle dish and a green tai curry. Both tasted amazing, plus service was friendly and quick. Prices were really good especially for food that was that good. Great selections of beer and a nice garden (which we would of sat in if it weren’t raining.) Will one hundred percent be heading back and exceeded expectations!

Good quality thai food and reasonably priced, have eaten here a few times and it has been consistently good.

Just by chance we found the crown and thistle and ended up with a lovely lunch without a prior booking and managed to get a table by the fire.Excellent choice on the menu and very generous, well presented dishes. The food was delicious and the service was quick and efficient. £40 for a main course and drink for two including tip was a very reasonable price.We will be back with more next time!

We had been recommended the crown and thistle. When we arrived it was quite unwelcoming as they couldn’t find our booking and questioned whether I’d even booked it in the first place, only to find they were looking at the wrong day. We then waited 45 minutes at our table to order drinks, and after waiting another 15/20 minutes we had to go up to the bar to ask to order our food. Food was pleasant when it arrived, but the service was exceptionally slow and the staff could not have been more disinterested.

We visited this Pub with another couple and used the restaurantwhich is Thai. The menu is extensive, we all ordered different dishes and all agreed were very tasty. The bill came with a round of drinks came to about £65, which was reasonable given the quality of the food and service.I would recommend that you ring to make a reservation prior to venturing out as this is a very popular place

Called in here to break up a long journey. Staff helpful and friendly and we were able to sit out back in a lovely sun trap garden. Good food selection and we had Thai food which appeared to be authentic and was very tasty washed down by a nice draught cider. All at a very reasonable price what more could you want ?

Travelling back from Dover to NW of England and wanted somewhere to stop for lunch. I am not a fan of service station food so I googled pubs near me. This pub was a short diversion off M11 . Situated in a lovely village with ample parking. It was a gorgeous day so we sat in their large beer garden. Lovely spring rolls to share. I then had vegi noodles, tasty although slightly oily. My husband had mixed meat curry. We requested mild however he still struggled with its hotness..2 cold ciders and very friendly staff. Definitely better than the services

we took over this place on a friday, about 22 of us! Food came out promptly and hot! Tasted amazing and we will be going back again next week!

Been coming to the crown for over a year now, never had a bad pint, had so many meals there in this time, pizza, Thai and all really good quality at a price that’s more than fair. Would recommend!

Went to Crown & Thistle last night just for a drink although often eat there as food is always fab and service excellent! Lovely atmosphere and as it was such a warm evening took advantage of the secluded rear garden. Good village atmosphere and always good to catch up with friends. Seems to attract many people from surrounding villages also which is always good to see. Look forward to my next visit.

Our first taste of thai food, we were blown away, it was a fantastic experience and one we will definitely repeat. Lovely staff.

There's always a well kept pint of beer at the Crown and Thistle, and a lively conversation with the locals or a member of staff. A friendly village pub serving Thai food that is popular for miles around.

Stayed in Great Chesterford for my Wife’s Birthday and booked at table at the Crown & Thistle. Fantastic food great service and fabulous atmosphere in a very lovely Pub. Thai food cooked to perfection will be back

Found this gem on a lunchtime a couple of weeks ago, surprisingly busy , food was excellent , ( managed a gluten free curry ) a decent selection of beers and good service , highly recommended.

A very enjoyable evening in a lovely atmosphere, our first evening here and the food was very authentic packed with immense flavour. Truly delicious, Gemma the waitress was a real gem and she made our evening even more pleasant, cheers Gemma! We will be back again for sure!

Having visited the restaurant on New Year's eve and been impressed, we decided to book a table for our wedding anniversary meal.

Converted pub with lovely lively atmosphere and great Thai dishes. Combination platter starter is highly recommended.

We supported a young autistic gentleman to come here and the staff were lovely. They had an excellent beer garden and although we didn’t eat here the food looked amazing.

This restaurant is in fact in High Street Great Chesterford. Fabulous food, lovely atmosphere and reasonably priced. Highly reccomended.

Meal started well, waitress had good knowledge, was friendly and the menu was varied. Had the mixed platter for starter, was bland and greasy- it all tasted the same. Potion size was good for the price however. The quality of our mains was varied, Thai chow mien tasty, Penang very good. Unfortunately I ordered from the specials board, crispy chicken and ginger rice. It was like having chicken dippers with a side of sticky white rice, didn’t taste of anything- I should have asked the waitress to describe it to me before I ordered! Should be removed from the menu immediately! The room got gradually busier as we ate, it was unbearably loud and there weren’t enough staff to deal with the customers in a timely manner. It took 25 minutes after we had finished to have the table cleared and no one came to check on us after our food had cone to the table. Had heard great things about this place but unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations. Will go back to the Tuns next time we want a Thai!

Had a very good dinner. Delicious mixed platter for 2 followed by beef stir fry and chicken stir fry both served with jasmine rice. Portions are generous and the staff friendly and attentive. Will be back soon.

The first visit was with a friend in mid November but the whole experience was so good that I booked again for 8 of us. The atmosphere in the pub is lively and friendly and the beers and wines are excellent. The food is quite exceptional and, even when there were 8 of us, it arrived together and piping hot. The service was extremely friendly and efficient. All in all 2 fantastic evenings in great surroundings serving fabulous food and drinks.

Five if us came her for my daughter's birthday. What a treat! The mixed platter starter was plentiful. The batter was hot and light, not soggy. Everything was fresh and tasty. The Thai curries were delicious, as was the duck stir fry and the noodles. Again, the meat and fish were obviously fresh. There was a wonderful selection of desserts which we we were too full to consider. The service was excellent, with the waitress giving excellent advice to those of us who don't often eat Thai food. Most of the curries can be served to your taste, depending on how hot you like them. The specials board had a good selection. All of this at an affordable price. Well definitely go there again.

Restaurant & Pub were very busy. A testament to the quality of the food, wine, beer & service. Only occasionally (in my experience) do you find good Thai food in a country location.

So pleased to have found this Thai. What a great find it was too. Wonderful olde Worlde pub serving authentic Thai cuisine. Very friendly staff, also knowledgeable with regards to the menu. Wide and comprehensive choice of dishes.

Recently visited with friends. The exterior is not all that swish since the pub is situated in a narrow road in the village with a few benches outside. Traffic is light.

Best Take Away in Great Chesterford! What better way is there to end your day by calling in and having a cooling glass of wine while you wait! The pub has a real village atmosphere and staff and customers always join in for a good laugh. Love it!

Popped in here early one evening after my son, who works nearby, suggested it after a lunchtime visit. I had a beautiful freshly cooked prawn stir fry with chilli and coconut rice. The 4 of us ate and the bill with drinks was just £54. Not bad for a 53rd birthday celebration! Staff were friendly and attentive. We will be going back.

We have eaten at this pub before but not for a number of years so this was the first time with the current owners and with the pub serving Thai food. The interior is still much the same and is relaxed and quite welcoming - the restaurant area is off to the side and is comfortably spacious. They have quite a good menu of Thai dishes, nothing unusual just good-average dishes and we all enjoyed the meals that we ordered. Service is what disappointed us on this occasion. Although we were greeted and shown to our table promptly we felt that the waitress showed no warmth or personality and did not engage at all with us or other diners. Furthermore, when we came to settle the bill we weren't quite sure how the bill was worked out as the layout and terminology weren't very clear so we politely queried it with the waitress - we were given several quizzical looks (were we speaking a foreign language?!) before being told, without any explanation, '...well, it IS right!' Disappointing and does not inspire us to return when there are plenty of other options locally. Restaurants should realise that service is paramount if they want customers to return.

We were on our journey home from Stansted Airport up to Yorkshire and needed to eat! We put a search in our cars sat nav and it came up with The Crown And Thistle, Great Chesterford, Saffron Walden. On entering the pub we were greeted very warmly by the owner Mark and when we asked if he had a table free in the restaurant he was able to accommodate us! My husband has a gluten intolerance and is extremely nervous about eating out as he has had some bad experiences when he has eaten at various places.we explained all of this to our waitresses Jo and Abi who were very knowledgeable and if they were unsure they went away to speak with Mark and the chefs who advised my husband. The meals were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious so we were thrilled that we had stopped there! Thank you Mark, Jo ,Abi and your team!

Thai is reasonably new here but done very well, with generous portions. We tried Massaman, Green and a Chilli Stir Fry during our recent visit - all delicious. Soft drinks are expensive - £3.60 a pint of lemonade - but otherwise well worth a visit.

Went to the pub tonight and ordered a takeaway as it was too busy for a table. The waitress was very nice an took our order and told us tI was busy and it would be a long wait about forty five mins. The waitress got our drink order quickly and even a second one for my husband. Another waitress came and took our payment and then we waited. About twenty mins after the time we were told we asked where our meal was and the waitress went to get. The food had beensittin on the side for some time. She did apologise but could no make any renumeration with out the owners consent and he was unavailable. We went out of the pub and the bag broke we carried it underneath as we walked a short distance to the house, but when we went into the house the sides of he bag split and some of the contents spilt on the floor much to the dogs joy !

Website advises ‘stone baked pizzas’ served alongside Thai menu every day of the week. My partner who doesn’t eat Thai ordered a pizza to 30 minutes later be told the oven isn’t working. (Stone baked pizza, coal and fire??) he then had to choose something he didn’t like as there was no other option but Thai. My food was lovely, but lack of ‘normal’ food and slow service.

The C & T has recently changed to a Thai food experience. This was our first visit. The menu choice is extensive to say the least. The food was good, but not outstanding. The service was very slow. We had to wait ages for second round of drinks. The food order was slow as well. Notwithstanding that, we had a most enjoyable evening

On Saturday we had use of the whole pub for the evening to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday. We had music and Mark and Ella arranged a Thai supper for 100 people! Since then we have been inundated with lovely comments from our friends complimenting the lovely food, venue and fab time they all had!!! Thank you Mark, Ella and all the staff.... can’t wait for the next party !! X

Sauvignon blonde local beer...yum! Nice Thai food at a really good price. Quick service. Nice surroundings. What's not to like?

We visited with friends two nights ago on a very busy Friday night. We were shown straight to our table and ordered a drink very promptly. The food was delicious, hot and fresh . We had the sharing starter and it was really lovely and more than enough for two. The mains were also great and we had no room for dessert unfortunately. The staff were very good too I have to say. We will definitely return and are lucky enough to live in Saffron Walden, so not far at all. Well done everybody.

We've eaten here before and previously enjoyed, but this time we were disappointed. My husband's food (Pork Belly) was cold;...

We visited on a surprisingly busy Tuesday night and experienced slow but pleasant service. Luckily we were in no rush. Starters such as whitebait and home-made soup were very good, but mains that included salmon and pie were very ordinary - my pie was burnt and accompanying veg more like school dinners. So a mixed bag.

Disappointed with our visit today. Went as a family of 4 for Sunday lunch. Dinner was served very cold and two of the guests were served very burnt Yorkshire puddings (they were black!). One of the portions of beef was very poor, inedible due to the vast amount of fat. On the plus side the veg was cooked well! We did complain but not entirely convinced the staff were too concerned. Don't think we'd visit again, much better available locally.
