Very welcoming, as much for those (us) just calling in for a post-hike drink as for people ordering food. Several rooms and alcoves make for a cosy atmosphere. The wood-fired pizza menu looks good and, as we were there on a Sunday, there was a decent looking and sensibly priced roast lunch on offer. Staff were great, several decent real ales available. Looks like a good beer garden at the back of the pub, whilst there is parking at the front. OK, so you may not be intending to visit Tebay as part of a holiday trip. For which you can hardly be blamed. But I would like to suggest that you make an exception and give the Cross Keys a try.

Really great little overnight stay whilst heading down the M6. Brilliant staff and very welcoming. ( Please ignore the reviews about being locked in, it's not factually correct. The team give you a code and you are able to come and go as you please over night)

The list of issues is considerable, so I'll list just a few - Noise from live music until late directly below our room. Ensuite was a cupboard with a sliding door. Of the only two available sockets, one was un-unusable. Couldn't get out of the place to walk my dog in the morning. The door through the bar area was locked, and the fire escape was either locked or jammed, preventing me from getting out ( even in the event of a fire !!) - basically, we were locked in the accommodation overnight. Watch the food bill, the menu prices magically have tax added on the bill. Unfortunately, I only noticed after. The place was dirty and tired. Needless to say, we won't be going back.

Having booked a lovely weekend away for my partners birthday in June , we decided we’d visit the cross keys inn , Penrith the coming September 24th as our children are back in school , so giving us a little us time. I booked using wowcher back in June , I paid the cross keys inn through wowcher , and in return we were excited to come to the cross keys in Penrith for 2 nights bed & breakfast inc drinks and a meal on the 1st evening. We don’t go away very often as money is very tight , as it is for most people these days. I booked the hotel over the telephone in June , and left my contact details. We travelled up from Chester on the day , taking us just a little over 3 hours. As I went to check in I was told the previous owners had gone into liquidation and the pub was not accepting any wowcher deals made ! I felt very unwelcome , disappointed and had to book elsewhere , leaving me out of pocket . Again nobody thought to contact us to let us know of any changes , I am struggling to get a refund via wowcher as the merchant has not yet responded to their emails. This situation is going ongoing , having had my money since June I think it very unfair. As this situation is still ongoing I feel others need to be careful when booking any deals though the sites. I am sure I am not the only customer affected .

Even though the menu was a bit sparse, seeing that they have only been there for 2 weeks, what they had was lovely and filling. Good value for money. Will go back

Great location with tremendous views. We went on a Thursday lunch time and it was quiet inside. Good choice of beers and hot drinks

We came away feeling very messed around and disheartened. It was my 30th birthday and I am 6 months pregnant with my second. My mum wanted to do something nice for us so she booked us the chalet for 2 nights so we could have some quality time away as a couple and to celebrate me turning 30. All seemed fine until we arrived at the hotel after a long drive and were asked to pay the extra £60 as she had upgraded us to the chalet. We paid it and were given the key to the room upstairs NOT the chalet. I questioned it as they had just gladly taken the £60 off us. They then proceeded to advise us that they 'knew this would happen and agreed they would have to challenge it when we arrived'. They had double booked us and obviously were hoping we wouldn't say anything about it but take our money. They said the same elderly lady books the chalet every year so they were happy to just move us! They knew this in advance and didn't call to let us know and had discussed it yet still took the £60 off us for the chalet upgrade!!! She had cancelled the first night so we stayed in the chalet for the first night but that wasn't without the guy trying to convince us not to stay in it saying 'I'm sure its not worth the faff moving the next day etc'. They then didn't give us half of the £60 refund but £15 refund. Our second night was awful as all we could hear through the floor and paper thin walls was slamming doors every few minutes, shouting all the time and the owners dog barking none stop outside our window. Management really need to think about how they greet new customers and how the place is ran. Will not be returning and my parents have said they won't be returning. Its a shame they look after returning customers but treat new people so unfairly.

Discusting customer service, conned my family from a weekend stay, the manager is extremely rude. Do not book

Booked through Wowcher and then contacted hotel and booked for the 15th of April. They have now turned around and said the booking doesn’t exist for that date but have redeemed the Wowcher lining their pockets. It’s an absolute scam and they are thief’s! Customer service is appalling, manager talking over people on the phone and then keeps hanging up! Will be reported to trading standards and watchdog

We stayed on a Wowcher deal and couldn't fault it. Excellent food, friendly staff and a lovely room with a big bath. Handy for the Howgills too. We'll be back.

Dogs can enter really clean they put food and water out for them too staff lovely and place really clean toilets clean and friendly staff, local people lovely and food looks nice too! Set in a lovely area xx

Had a really lovely stay.staff very nice .made us welcome .our room 6 was ok too small shower unit .but does the job .locals are friendly to .They bring there dogs into the pub but they are not trouble even when eating food .thank you for a nice stay

Good coffee and very friendly staff. So close to the M6 motorway that you can pull off instead of using a service area.

Visited one evening at New year for sons birthday at short notice. Friendly staff, quality ales and food at a good price. Steak was excellent. Thoroughly recommended if in the area. Will be back.

The chalets are lovely and the staff friendly, roast beef dinner was very welcome after a day on the fell. Very dog friendly.

A quiet Saturday night fir this venue. A group of 8 of us visited. Food was OK. The brie starter was only warm at one end & the rest of the dishes a little disappointing.

Nice rooms, and venue. However the room has a terrible smell, that seems to be a common thing. If it wasn't for the smell, I'd have given it a 5 rating, but it really is terrible.

Staff lovely and evening meal lovely. Breakfast was disgusting with snapable bacon and black pudding that flew everywhere it was so burnt and hard. This totally spoilt our experience there.

After a very long day of driving I decided I would find a nice traditional pub, have a meal and get a room for the night. My call was answered promptly and a friendly person said yes they had rooms but the kitchen would close at 8:30. I called back to confirm the booking. When I arrived a young man handled my check in quite well. He was friendly and attentive. After ordering a meal (which was average and did not resemble the standard of the food pictures on their website) and a beer, I was then subjected while eating, to the two young male staff members and what I assume was an off duty female staff member lark about and talk about their personal lives, skipping through song after song on the music playing. Worst of all is the constant swearing in their conversations; almost every second word. I realize it’s a pub but it’s completely unprofessional for staff to speak this way in front of customers. What a shame. It had the potential to be a welcoming pub and to leave a lasting impression. The room was good - clean and well presented. Better quality towels than most 5 star hotels.

They tried to charge £4 more for a meal than advertised. They wouldn't adjust and ended up paying what they said not what the menu said. Definitely will not be visiting again

Great accommodation...particularly as we had our mutts with us. We had a meal in the bar..food and service was really good..overall a really positive experience..would go back!

A pleasant enough little place with a couple of minor issues. The staff were great, very helpful and attentive. Food was fine at the evening meal. The room was functional but the shower was tiny, even for my missus who is under 5' and the shower curtain was a bit grubby. I thought the room was clean enough but she reckoned the unit the TV was on and the mirror needed a clean. One of the sockets by the bed didn't work and the sink had a bit of a crack in it and worst of all there were only 2 small biscuits with the complimentary tea & coffee😊

Lovely pub just down the road from where we were staying, food is okay but fairly expensive for what it is. The steak was lovely but the chips weren't so good, the pasta was a bit bland and a bottle of wine was £18! Very friendly staff and locals. Coming back to the area in September so would go there again and hopefully they will have more choice on the menu by then.

Visited The Cross Keys Inn twice now. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the food was really nice and the atmosphere was very relaxed. They do allow dogs and muddy boots which is fab for people exploring the local countryside and fells, they also have rooms available which are clean and a good size. The only downside is the toilets in the bar are not wheelchair accessible but even so it's a nice little stop for a pint and decent food.

Two of us had a very good lunch, reasonably priced. Considering how close it is to the motorway, we would have expected more clients. We checked out the spotless toilets too!

We came here for dinner during our Coast to Coast walk. The staff are friendly and attentive. The service is flawless. The Chef is great, everything seasoned perfectly and food was piping hot. Keep the Pork belly on the menu, it's a winner.

Friendly village pub with good food.

It is what it is. Great place for a an overnight stay. Basic but done very well with decent beers, menu and accomodation. Staff helpful and friendly. Parking is handy, access to and from couldn't be better and the views are wonderful.

A lovely family run hotel. I had a good meal with wine, very reasonably priced and well presented. Very friendly staff and I was comfortable to visit on my own.

Stayed for 2 nights in the garden chalet. Lovely decor, clean and everything in order. I loved the towel robes, nice extra! We ate in the restaurant both nights, we thoroughly enjoyed it, great choice, well presented and reasonably priced. Staff were all friendly, professional, and we enjoyed a bit of "banter" with them all. Breakfast set us up for the day, we decided on the cooked option, tasty and quality produce, additional extras on the menu which you can add on, depending on appetite (the standard breakfast was enough for us) cereals, fruit etc also included. We didn't have our children with us, but it was lovely to see kids having fun outside in the play area, nice busy atmosphere where you don't feel the need to shhh the kids. Great stay and we look forward to going back.

We have been before and knew the food would be great. The service was fine though our starters took a while to arrive. The main meal, lamb shank, was delicious.

Grim room. No water out of hot tap. Hasn't been decorated in decades. Food was actually ok, staff polite enough , but it is a pub , not a hotel.

Terrific to be able to go back to The Cross Keys Inn for lunch outside in the beer garden today. Home made steak pie and hand cut chips were delicious and a big plate full, more than I could eat for lunch. Introduced a couple of colleagues to the place and both had chicken jalfrezi curry with home made Nan bread followed by the special board dessert, a lemon number with butterscotch ice cream and a shortbread biscuit all freshly made. The staff were friendly and attentive. Well done. We will be back for more.

We called in for a quick lunch and took up the 2 for £15.95 offer. My wife and I went for the fish and chips. The fish was fresh and cooked in a lovely batter. However, the chips were frozen and could only be described as horrendous! (Scraps rather than chips and hidden under the fish). They also tasted like they have been re-heated. The tartar sauce was tasteless and the mushy peas, again tasted like they had been warmed up, or been stood around for ages. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

Really pleasant surprise, we'd booked this end of the lakes as everywhere was booked up and this was the only pub in walking distance from the BnB - really big pub, beer was clean, food was great, service was flawless and the games room was great- had electronic scoring for darts. Lovely time and a short walk back after a hard day's wandering. It's going to cut about 40 mins from the drive back as well- think this is going to be our groups bolthole from now on!

If I could give it a no star, I would! We have been travelling lots of times around the UK and abroad, been to tons of different accommodations but I never before experienced a customer service as disgusting as this one! I had trouble booking on Expedia for a family of 4 for 3 nights in the "chalet". It was definitely available but for some reason, it wouldnt let me and I didnt want to cheat them by booking for 2 adults and then turning up with 2 children as well. So to secure the booking, I rang up and had spoken to the owner (Thomas). He guaranteed that I've got my name booked in because he said that I try to book it on Expedia, it might allocate me to an unsuitable room. I asked for confirmation email/text but he said that he is the owner and so I dont need a confirmation, thus giving me a reference number after giving him my bank details. We arrived at 9.30pm(and paid full upon check in) after a long day walking and driving only to find ourselves in a small double room for 2 adults, 1 toddler and 1 infant!!! I tried to speak to the person in charge named Daniel and he was very apologetic-he is the only good thing about this place. He tried to help us by looking for a spare bed or maybe another hotel but unfortunately nothing came up as it is a bank holiday weekend. I wasnt very happy with the whole situation being with 2 very tired small children. Daniel rang the owner and explained what happened and passed the phone to me. Thomas didnt give me not even a single apology for the inconvenience he has caused. He just gave me two options: to either leave and get my refund or stay-pressure was on at 9.30pm with 2 kids after driving for 5 hours!!!!! WORST THAN THE MOST TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!! I was so anxious, I couldnt help but cry in front of all the staff and customers at the pub. He was extremely rude, inconsiderate and arrogant. I paid for the price of a chalet and been given a small double room and didnt get any form of compensation. I was left with no choice but to stay. There is nothing good about this place. It is very noisy being on the top of the pub, very uncomfortable and very dated and dirty. So if you dont want to be in a pickle on your holiday, AVOID AVOID AVOID this accommodation!!!!!

Efficient, clean and very pleasant

We stayed in the area for a week and came here twice, staff were always lovely and attentive and the food was brilliant. If we stop by again will definitely return, thanks to the owner for a great time

Visited this lovely family run Pub Restaurant on our way back home from a short break. The gentleman am assuming the owner welcomed us with a smile and clearly acknowledged us and straight away told what the soup of day was, something we usually have to chase or ask. The level of service of excellent quick and efficient. The food we had was very nice and filling. They catered to our needs and a wide range of beers/wines including international beers like Estrella. As a dog friendly establishment they also catered our dog whom enjoyed his nice cut up large Cumberland sausage for a cheap reasonable fee. I'd definitely recommend coming here for grub and drink in this clean public house with lovely interior and natural log fireplace fitted for the winter. ¡Muchas gracias mis amigos y hasta pronto!

Lovely staff who were prompt and happy to help. The food was Reasonably priced and very tasty. I very much enjoyed my steak and ale pie. The views were also quite nice from the beer garden.

We were made very welcome & to stay in our motorhome in the overflow car park after enjoying a beautiful meal & the lovely host's couldn't have done more. Thoroughly recomend a visit. To top it all the breakfast & pub doggie were the best.😁

We had a very enjoyable stay, the bed and room were brilliant and we had a great nights sleep. The evening meal was well presented and tasted divine. Breakfast was superb and staff were very attentive, all in all a very enjoyable stay and will be coming back soon.

Lovely village pub with friendly staff and serving good food

Visited this pub on a Sunday afternoon in January while visiting my daughter and her partner in Tbay, the pub was very quiet but the staff we’re very welcoming and the food was delicious. Four of us had Turkey dinner, one had Belly Pork and one had a Vegan vegetable stir fry and all the meals were lovely.
