I was absolutely gobsmacked when I preferred my food only to find out that half of the slaved staff are children. The children are also treated with contempt and paid a diabolical wage. How can I trust food like that being handled by 12 year olds. Nevertheless I shan’t be returning to the pigshed for another meal. And I can garantee my family won’t be eating there vile produce.

We recently visited the Cowshed for the first time in several years. The layout and food offering have changed, but it still disappointed. On a night when one might have expected the restaurant to be busy, we arrived to find only three tables were occupied. The place still lacks atmosphere. We were shown to our reserved table but there was no offer to take coats. It is autumn now. That proved a reasonable indicator of how the service would be: not very attentive or friendly. The menu is not ambitious, and doesn't offer great variety. I found it hard to get excited by any of the main course choices and vegetables seem hard to come by. Prices are not excessive but I didn't think this was really value for money. Reviews from others suggest lunch might be a better experience, but for dinner there are definitely better options in the area.

this is the 3rd attempt I have had at dining at the Cow Shed. My wife and I arrived at 2pm to be told that they had stopped serving food but the chef would stay back and cook for us. The staff are the biggest problem here not very helpful at all then my ordered a latte and a scone the latte came very quickly then the scone came 10 minutes later by this time the latte was getting cold The burgers were superb and the chips also pity there was no relish with it. I am infinitely more positive about my second visit to The Cow Shed and I hope my review will reflect this. My negative observation from my first experience was that the restaurant lacked a bit of identity and did not know what it wanted to be. The restaurant seemed soulless as a result. This time I feel the Cowshed is more comfortable in what it is wanting or trying to be. We went as a family for a relaxing informal lunch whilst still expecting good quality food and service. This is exactly what we found and we enjoyed our meal immensely as a result. Compared with my previous visit , their were numerous other diners seemingly enjoying themselves likewise. I thoroughly enjoyed my fish and chips , although in choosing the jumbo portion , I was not overwhelmed by its size. Others had burgers that equally appreciated.

I vaguely remember visiting The Cow Shed a couple of years back and thinking it was a little too posh! I'm not saying it's not lost it's flair now but it certainly seems a lot more friendly! The food is amazing, we have been twice within 6 weeks and the menu has changed, between visits, but there has been something for everyone on it on both occasions. Staff are great, friendly and helpful. If the conservatory is open the views are so peaceful and pleasant - but in winter months this may not apply!I applaud the Cow Shed, they have really changed things up. They have now also opened a take away chip shop at the side and it too provides brilliant food!Kids menu - great! Staff were also very friendly towards child and it was really appreciated! Child was the one that begged us to go back for her birthday meal!

Along with a large group of friends I visited this restaurant for a previously booked lunch and as a result we had a more limited menu to choose from, however, all the starters and main courses were of good quality, tasty, beautifully and efficiently served by a pleasant and helpful staff. I didn't have a dessert but members of the group who indulged said the desserts were delicious. The dining room is very attractive with a light and spacious feeling. I will certainly return soon with my husband to sample the more normal menu.

Easy to find and good parking - not quite at the door, but very near on a pouring wet day! Very well presented modern room with just the right balance of decor to offset the beautiful country scenes from the panoramic windows. Nice welcome and tables well spaced considering how busy it was - certainly would suggest booking for Sunday lunch. The food was nicely presented and very tasty although the starter of prawn cocktail would have been better enjoyed had a small spoon been supplied to enjoy the delicious sauce. I do have one issue, maybe just personal, however roast beef (mouthwatering) should be accompanied by a nice light, fluffy on inside crispy on out, yorkshire pudding - not a soggy mass of batter full of skirlie? Nice selection of puddings followed by good coffee. All in all a perfect lunch with friendly and attentive service and reasonably priced too.

The restaurant facility is fantastic with great quality furniture, super views but it's let down by the overwhelming aroma of chip shop fat !In addition the new menu is tedious - boring choices of burger and steak and of course f&c. Only interesting choice (cauliflower brick) was "off".Starters were stingy and pre-made. Dessert choice equally bland.Overall - they should up the standards and charge a couple quid more.

I was taken for a birthday lunch to the Cowshed. A very smart modern building consisting of a main dining room and adjoining conservatory. The menu provided good choices to suit everyone in my party and including consideration for those with dietary requirements. The food was served in bowls rather than plates making using knives and forks awkward. Service was pleasant but slow and the provision of appropriate cutlery (spoons for soup) required a request some time after the soup was served! The food was good but not outstanding. We were not offered a dessert menu and had to ask, likewise with tea and coffee. Improvement could be made by training the staff. We were able to linger at our table which we appreciated. I would dine here again in the hope that the service is improved.

Having just opened a fish and chips take out, the Cow Shed was recommended to us. They have a wonderful outside area where you can sit and enjoy your take out food. The huge overhead umbrella is kitted out with heaters for cooler evenings and shelter from the rain. Pricing was similar to other fish and chips outlets. The fish portions were big and could easily feed 2 people. Our fish and chips were a bit soggy, have had far better from another chipper in the village. The round fish cakes, however, were absolutely divine. A novel idea having fish cakes as round crispy balls. The outer coating/batter was superbly crispy and the inner smooth and delicious - they are to die for! Will definitely be back for the fish cakes but sadly not too sure about the fish and chips.

It is not clear to me just what clientele this place is aiming at. It has, overall, an upmarket look about it and yet it combines a fish and chip shop within the premises. The main restaurant area is very smart, roomy, and with a conservatory-type area with pleasant outlooks over the surrounding agricultural and forestry land. An attractive and seemingly well-stocked bar is situated at one end, although I don't think one would be encouraged to either stand or sit by it.We arrived shortly before noon, seeking lunch, and the place was absolutely deserted. Indeed, we wondered whether it was actually open. However, a waitress appeared and asked if we had booked. She looked disappointed and troubled when we said we had not. She said she would check if there would be a table for us. Unless management were aware of some impending invasion of diners, presumably by the busload, the response seemed really odd. However, she returned, said it would be okay, and asked where we would like to sit. We opted for the conservatory. We were led there and seated. Menus were provided. However, before we could really begin to examine them, the waitress returned and told us that the manager had said the table we had chosen was already reserved and, so, we had to move to the main seating area 'inside'. I'm reliably informed that, when it first opened, this restaurant appeared to aim for the fine-dining market but has since lowered its sights and prices, presumably having found insufficient takers for the initial approach. What one finds today is a menu that is certainly a step up from your typical pub grub, without being pretentious. Two friends opted for soup and open sandwiches, whilst I preferred a burger. They were each excellent and, to our minds, very good value. Since this was lunch for three friends who don't meet up regularly, we tarried over the meal and coffee/tea and it was close to 3pm before we settled the bill and left. We noted that several tables, apparently reserved, had never been occupied. Some persons, calling in on the off chance of lunch, had been turned away, though. It seems management needs to do something about its reservation policy.I would happily return here and happily recommend it. Just one adverse comment - no waiting staff approached over the course of a lengthy lunch and asked whether everything was to our satisfaction. Perhaps they were too busy getting ready to repel boarders!

There are some places you walk into and you know at once that this is something special and so it was the other day when we walked into the Cowshed, Banchory for lunch - clean, no expense spared, bright, welcoming staff, the view from beyond the panoramic windows opening out on to a colourful vista of ripening wheat fields to a green forest and Hill of Fare beyond - must be a watercolourist’s dream. And what about the food? Suited my palette, the varied menu offering choices to suit every taste. And what about the staff other than the welcoming attribute already mentioned? I only need to say one word “Lewis” not “Hamilton” but a young man who at 16 like LH knows where he wants to be - having set his sights on a career in serving the public enthusing about the time spent at Gleneagles for special training - may not be formula one racing but certainly formula one in attention, politeness and service. The chef/owner whose culinary skills cannot be faulted and whose surname is Buchan I could have been forgiven for thinking he originated from my home town of Peterhead - not so said young Lewis - but the fish you’re eating is! Fare well? yes indeed but not farewell!

We stumbled across a sign for this restaurant one lunchtime and decided to go with it. First impressions were mixed as the outside area hasn't actually been finished, but looking at Trip Advisor, they've only been open a week or so, so can be forgiven! The restaurant was bustling but we were seated in the conservatory area very quickly - and what a fabulous view! We struggled a little bit with the lack of choice on the menu but eventually chose burger & chips and spanish sausage, egg and manchego cheese & chips, with a side salad to share. The burger was delightful. Tasty and fresh. The chips were crunchy and cooked beautifully. The Spanish sausages unfortunately were very oily and every time my boyfriend cut into one, it would leak fat onto his chips which neither looked nor tasted great, although they did have a nice flavour. The side salad was fresh with lots of croutons but had been doused in grated parmesan. Although we both like it, we agreed it could have done with less. Saying all that though, we wouldn't hesitate to go back. Prices were very reasonable and the staff were pleasant and polite.

The Cow Shed is a rather odd culinarily experience on account that it does not not quite know what it wants to be. It does not appear to be either a casual / informal lunch offering, nor quite a fine dining experience. I understand that the restaurant has dabbled with what it is trying to be. And perhaps should be better focusing on its dinner offering but for lunchtime it's a little confused. This is a great shame for the Cow Shed has many positive qualities. Not least of which Is that it has an absolutely wonderful location . The premises overlook some beautiful country side which can be appreciated throughout. The food we ordered was excellently prepared which on this occasion was fish and chips. It was quite wonderful with very pleasant tarter sauce that I could have devoured. From what I could see of other patrons dishes, other choices looked equally appetising. However the decor and "vibe" is not quite right, and judging by how quiet it is , this is very unfortunate. This would seem to be the general consensus among patrons who were conspicuous by their absence. When one considers how busy the Raemoir Garden Centre is for lunches a short drive away, the Cowshed must be considered to be not fulfilling its potential; potential I feel it has in abundance.

Having been to The Cowshed before and enjoying it a lot, we were keen to return. Although it was a Saturday, the restaurant was not full so we expected a trouble free and pleasant evening. However, the food and the service were disappointing from the start. Once we were shown to our table and an initial drinks order taken we were not a top priority. Our drinks did not appear until the staff were reminded when the starter arrived after quite a time (the starter was a salad). Once this was finished we waited for 20 minutes for the main courses which, when they arrived, were disappointing. The fish and chips were very dry (surprising when there is a "chippie" on site and the burger was cold. The onion rings were very good though. The desserts were mediocre and small. The whole main course menu was limited, mostly beef; 1 fish, 2 chicken, 1 vegetarian option the rest beef in some form. Not once were we asked if we were enjoying the meal, nor were we asked if we would like coffees etc, but the waitress was quick to point out that we could add a gratuity to the credit card payment. If we had been asked we would have commented, but as we had been there for quite a while we decided to leave. No-one said goodbye on our way out. I will not judge by this visit alone and hope the next is a better experience, but will not persist if there is no improvement.

I make that at home, so not ideal for a Fri night out with drinks. I was told I could have burger without bun, soup without bread etc.Not good enough. The place was recommended to me as there was a gluten free chef? I would have expected a bit more experiment for the food if this were the case. Had to have pudding, but my only choice was ice cream and sorbet. Not exactly very exciting. We spent £140 in total and I couldn't wait to get home for something else to eat! I'd only ever been here once before, but our friends we were dining with had eaten at The Cowshed several times, so they were very familiar with the restaurant. They knew that the menu and style of food had recently changed, as they'd chatted with staff when having lunch just two weeks prior to our Saturday evening visit for dinner. We liked the decor and ambience of the place and noted how busy it was, being a Saturday night. The menu was, to be honest, not what we'd been expecting, as we'd always heard it tended toward the fine dining end of things. This was more of a bar supper menu now, just as our friends had anticipated, knowing the owners were altering what they offered, to appeal more to a larger market. The guys both had starters – a ‘Special of the Day’ Sole Goujons in breadcrumbs and a Chicken Liver Parfait served with Baby Pearl Onions, Toasted Brioche, & Pea Shoots. They were fairly small portions, but adequate, and nicely presented. I usually find I can choose between 3 or 4 options but on this mains menu just two appealed to me. I love fish and would have preferred another fish option than just Fish & Chips. However, I chose this - Crispy Golden Battered North Sea Haddock Fillet with Chip Shop Chips & Tartar Sauce and it was really beautiful fish, and wonderful batter. My friend chose the chicken option, Butter Seared Scotch Chicken Breast served with Roasted Spiced Apples, Vegetables, Potatoes & Tarragon Gravy, which would have been my other choice. It was great too. The men both had ‘Daily Special’ 6oz steaks, and be warned, other than chips, any other accompaniment such as vegetables is an extra £3 - that's not on as far as I am concerned, especially with expensive steaks. One steak was also considerably smaller than the other.Once again with the dessert menu, I felt there could be one or two other options – all four of us settled for Lemon Tart. The tart filling was zesty as it should be, but the pastry very thick, hard and disappointing. The lime ice cream accompanying the tart was delicious, saving the sweet somewhat. As both we ladies were designated chauffeurs for the night, the gentlemen had planned to share a bottle of wine, but apparently the wine list was having a re-vamp, and the wines they would have chosen were no longer available. They settled for glasses of wine.Perhaps we had visited when the transition from fine dining to bistro type fayre was just bedding in, and it may alter/be adapted according to feedback from diners.I understand establishments wanting to tailor what they provide to customer’s preferences and wallets/purses, and altering their menus to try and attract more diners than they are perhaps seeing coming through the doors. There is perhaps a fine line between pleasing all customers and making a profit, but it is something which needs to be addressed. What The Cowshed is offering is a tad muddled right now – neither fine dining nor food at bistro prices. With 4 glasses of wine, a few soft drinks and teas/coffees, our bill for the four of us came to around £160. The service was very good, so we might give The Cowshed another go a few months from now, and see what additional tweaks have been implemented.

On a whim, we popped into The Cowshed for Sunday lunch. We all ordered the roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, skirlie, potatoes, broccoli and butternut squash - and what a great decision that was...!The beef was probably the finest of its kind that we've had - at least as far as I can recall. It was not fillet steak, but it was a beautifully cooked joint of roast beef - sliced nice and thick with a tinge of pink; the result is meat that is succulent and very, very tasty.Service and setting was perfect on s sunny May afternoon.Well worth a visit.

We came here as a family group for Sunday lunch and I was very impressed. The drive from Aberdeen takes you out along the river Dee and is a stunning drive. The restaurant is a brilliant white low building set against the backdrop of mountains and forests . Inside the building is very nicely decorated in a contemporary style and floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the mountains so it almost appears to be a huge painting running the length and height of one wall . We opted for the Sunday roast share lunch where you get large platters of beef chicken and lamb. The beef was the finest roast beef I have ever had. Far from the usual grey thin slices this pink thick slices full of flavour and melt in the mouth. With a cheerful and efficient team to serve this helped to make for a Sunday lunch that was hard to beat

It was our first visit to the Cowshed but certainly won't be our last. The waitress was charming and told us that we could have smaller portions of the main courses or larger ones of the starters. We chose smaller portions of the fish and chips but could not have managed a larger portion. The batter was excellent and we were pleasantly surprised by the bill.

Good quality local produce cooked excellently, very home styled cooking. Went for dinner on a quiet Saturday. Fish cake and langoustine starters were too notch, main courses of steak pie and chicken breast were very good without being overly exciting, the fudge brownie dessert was delicious! Perhaps a little pricey but still very good cooking.

We popped into the fish and chip side of the restaurant. The service was excellent - our order was taken quickly and everything is cooked to order. A standard fish supper was £6:80(which is very reasonable) a very large piece of freshly cooked haddock with plenty of chips - all popped into a cardboard box( so no need for washing up). The staff were very friendly and helpful. This place is becoming the talk of the town and the surrounding area due to the fact the fish and chips are so good! Well done guys keep up the good work I will definitely be back.

I ate lunch there with a friend recently. The restaurant was empty apart from us and a single gentleman. As the title suggests this must have been a former cowshed and although nicely and freshly decorated it is a large space. It was cold and there was no atmosphere. We did mention that it was cold but I am not sure if there was any response to this as we hadn't actually asked for the heating to be turned up. The waitress who attended to us was lovely. My friends meal was OK but mine was disappointing. My cheeseburger was so solid I couldn't cut it and I was given a different knife which was better. They would have cooked me another, but my Vegas and chips would have been cold by then so I persevere. There was one piece of processed cheese slice on it that just looked miserable. The vegetables looked forlorn too. 3 lonely Brussels sprouts, too many chewy green beans and a couple of pieces of stem broccoli, all of which went cold quickly. The chips were delicious. Even the tartar sauce looked tired and dried out on top. The toilets were clean and tidy. Certainly won't be rushing back despite the lovely waitress.

I visited with my daughter, sister and mum just before Christmas. My mum had been unwell so this was a treat for her.The restaurant setting is lovely with some really nice views. The restaurant decor was nice although not very festive feeling. Another gripe was we were seated at a round table and in the centre was a really high vase so you couldn't see the person opposite you which made conversations tricky. We decided to choose from the festive menu, I had the brie wedges (which were cold in the middle) and the roast turkey and trimmings, this was tasty enough although no pigs in blankets! but nothing to get over excited about. For desert I went for the poached pear and meringue, again well presented but average tasting. The staff were very attentive so could not fault them.Prices were reasonable £17.50 for 2 courses or £19.50 for 3 courses.I had been expecting more but would probably return again to give it another go.

Having moved very recently into the area, we were amazed just how many local reviews we received from neighbours and local businesses alike to 'try the Cow Shed'. Our daughter and her boyfriend went and had a lovely romantic meal which they raved about, however this review is from me - so I can only vouch for our experience! When we arrived (we had booked), it took quite a long time to be recognised as being there, waiting to be seated despite the restaurant not being that busy. I must admit however that the owner did fuss over us after a couple of inadvertant coughs and the table we were given was lovely - in fact, we both remarked on the decor and the lighting which was quite low creating a nice, homely feel... We did feel welcome as soon as we sat down.We ordered drinks and as we were handed our menus we were taken apart with the news that the steaks were 'not available' - the very thing that we were both looking forward to having! :0( No reason was given, and as the restaurant wasn't particularly busy being mid-week, we genuinely were at a loss to understand what the problem could be. The food we did order was average - not bad, but nothing amazing and it was cooked perfectly well. The menu without steaks, did seem to lack something however and we both left feeling a little deflated after our experience. I am not knocking the owners nor the Cow Shed as a whole and I am willing to give them another chance to prove me wrong, so in summary - I would give the evening a B+, not bad with enough potential, credibility and resources to become very good.. Just get those steaks sorted!

Having taken a friend out for a meal, was very disappointed with quality of food. Not one fillet steak cooked to what was ordered. Had to call the waitress to ask for steak knives. Having spent £30 on each fillet steak not including the veg which was a further £3 each I would have expected them to have cooked to our requirements. Not normally people to complain we tried to make the best of it. The three course dinner lacked professionalism which we would have expected from a Restaurant of this standard. Plastic tablecloths, lack of flowers, too noisy, no finesse. Like to keep trade local but will definitely NOT return to this Restaurant.

Been now at the Cow Shed three times. It had been recommended by a fish merchant in Aberdeen. This restaurant is very modern and stylish, staff is knowledgeable of the menu, courteous and pleased to be of assistance to the diner. This is quality on a plate! The chef has consistently delivered food at its very best with attention to detail, a nice combination of flavours and a well balanced menu. This is classical food at its best! When you source the best produce, it must reflect in the price. Reading some of these negative reviews which we found most unhelpful, price seemed to be an issue. Well, you only get what you pay for!Another negative review was that the menu was not varied enough. To the contrary, there are 3-4 starters, 4-5 mains and desserts. To me this is fine dining and this is the norm in Aberdeenshire. My only regret is that you didn't open a Cow Shed in Aberdeen and give the big boys a run for their money!

We pre booked our table for 4 and there was no need since the restaurant was very quiet. This was our first visit so we were anxious that it may not be good. How wrong we could be. The restaurant is very modern and the adjacent kitchens which were open, in part, to see were spotless. There is a cook school on the premises as well.Gordon our waiter was obviously very nervous and he confirmed that this was his first night waiting on his own. He was very friendly and attentive but needs more confidence which will come in time. Graham Buchan, Chef and part owner, provided an excellent meal. Our starters varied from a plate of olives, to potato and broccoli soup, to langoustines. all were very good as were our mains of lamb chump, beef and fried sole. All fayre was simple but was served in an attractive way and was delicious. I hope this restaurant will be successful and if we are in the area we will return. The view from the restaurant over the fields to the forest, was very pleasant and restful.

This looks like the kind of place you'd describe as a gem. If so, this one hasn't been fully polished. Starters were average. Salmon marinated in turmeric was oddly tasteless, accompanied for some reason by giant cashews. Would have been so much better if they'd been finely sliced. My colleague's langoustine was deep fried in breadcrumbs. He described it as inoffensive. Hardly a glowing report. Presentation was average for both dishes. My roast beef was good, although the salted onion marmalade was the only touch that set it apart from a home cooked meal. The fillets of sole were "ok". Again nothing to set the dish out as a meal created by a creative chef. Didn't have pudding. The view is great. Overall I would have expected better, especially for a restaurant that we discovered through the Michelin guide ( it doesn't have a star). Any restaurant that has a cookery school should be on top of it's game. I'm not entirely sure you'd learn much if tonight's meal was anything to go by.

We arrived to a totally empty restaurant and were given a nice window seat. A party of 3 chatty ladies arrive a few minutes later and the waitress sat them on the table right next to us! The proximity of the tables is best described as cozy and it was a totally unnecessary as we were the only two tables in the place when we left an hour later. I had the insalata caprese which was tasty but arrived with the surprise additional ingredient of Little Gem Lettuce. Mains arrived in good time but my wife's steak and ale pie as a stew with a puff pastry slice placed on top. My grilled sausages and potato croquette with gravy arrived in a bowl and the sausages were burnt and not very warm. The croquettes may have been crispy once but ended up a soggy, drowned in the onion gravy. We skipped dessert resulting in a £38 bill with a bottle of mineral water a diet coke and a glass of wine.
