Our first meal at The Grand, daytrip from Cornwall by train. The Compass Bar overlooks the Torquay sea front . The lunch was excellent followed by good coffee. The "comfy armchair" dining chairs enhanced a memorable meal with relatives! We look to book for a long weekend stay.

My wife and l ate here with the promise of culinary delights. Oh how disappointing. The selfish bisque was as expected salty if not a little too much but was OK. However, it was downhill after that. My wife ordered a filled fish but no fish was filled and the chef refused to fillet it for my wife. Her attempts to do so resulted in disaster so abandoned that course. My main course was pasta which was incredibly salty. Courses returned payment refunded.

Met friends here for dinner. Food was OK but expensive for what it was. Fish and chip (quite a small portion) and a burger both, costing £15 each. We also waited a long time for our food, well over half an hour, with no apology/explanation from staff. We found staff quite curt and not naturally friendly. There was a party in the hotel which may have slowed things down, but a friendly notice of this would have helped. Keith's brasserie as it is now called is in a lovely setting with great views.

I didn't expect to like this place, we arrived and it was heaving, a couple of days before Christmas. There were no vacant tables, we weren't very keen on waiting, but it was 'brass monkeys' outside and we were hungry. When a table became available we ordered and were very pleased when the food arrived pretty quickly and with a very pleasant and attentive waitress. They were working flat out, but despite the general craziness everyone was very pleasant and efficient. The food though, not cordon bleu, was very acceptable, for such a place, the room was wacky in its decor and,all in all we enjoyed our brief mealtime, we also had an amusing time people watching.

We decided on going to The Grand for lunch as it was my partners mothers birthday, we sat outside as it was a sunny day. The service poolside was fabulous from Anthony James, however when we decided to sit within the compass lounge and brasserie outside seating area we went unnoticed for quite a while until asking a girl from the brasserie for menus. When I asked to order from one of the brasserie staff I was told to order at the bar, on all other occasions I have been at The Grand it's has been table service. My partners mum and sister were still deciding on what to have so I made my way for the bar to order. When my partners mother then went to order about 10 mins later the gentleman who was serving had said it was table service and came outside to our table. My partners mum had ordered the same as me and cheese and pickle sandwich, although they were substituting the pickle for chutney. My partners sister is Vegan, but when we asked about Vegan options, there weren't any. She then ended up ordering an avocado sandwich. We waited over half an hour for our food, from which at that point Anthony James made his way over to us from the poolside bar and went inside to chase our orders. He then returned with our food. I felt he really went the extra mile for us. Although I'd like to say after that we sat and enjoyed our lunch I'm afraid I can't as both the cheese and pickle sandwiches were inedible, I had ordered mine on brown bread, I received white and there's was more chutney than cheese on the sandwich. The bread itself looked to be just a supermarket loaf of sliced bread and overall the sandwiches looked poorly made. I expected much more than this from The Grand with the sandwich costing £7.50, as I would of found a better quality sandwich in Tesco. I did go to the bar to complain from which Paul dealt with the complaint. He gave amazing service and took both sandwiches off of the bill. However to complicate things when it came to pay the bill the problem had arose that my partners mother had paid for dip and dine from which I felt Paul really went above and beyond going down to the swimming reception to sort it out and making this slight complication as least stressful as possible. Although the situation was rectified I did find this brought down the tone of the birthday lunch I had planned. We will go back to the grand for drinks but will not eat there again.

Met up with an old friend at this location for lunch. We had done this together before and had good memories. It was a beautiful day for October and the views across the bay were magnificent. A great location and yes, while it is true that the ambience of the hotel is one of a faded bygone era, the Compass provides a solid lunch menu. The staff were attentive, courteous and extremely helpful and the Bouillabaisse which we all chose was good – a little too many potatoes perhaps, but of good colour, consistency and flavour. I also had the chicken liver parfait which was old school and delicious. Good value for money. We will do it again sometime.

Called in for a glass of wine and snack. Disappointed. The hotel itself is in a great location and the foyer is lovely in a "faded glamour" way. However, the staff could have been at home in Wetherspoons: not much "wow factor" or sense of great service for staff in a hotel holding itself out as the premier one in the area. The staff in my own "less upmarket" hotel along the coast rang rings round them and could give them a lesson. Smiling is not hard. Wine not very nice, food fine but no more.

Being local I have been coming here for coffee or lunch regularly over the years in the compass lounge. It used to have lovely food and service. The last two visits the food has been very disappointing. A long wait for food despite only two tables occupied, then lukewarm food which was sent back. Food expensive and nothing special. Condiments smeared in something greasy. The bill plonked on our table despite not asking for it, and without being asked if we wanted anything else, we did actually! But after that we didn't bother. Complained about the experience to the staff and got handed a form to fill in, which did, with my contact details. It's now been over two months and no one has contacted me hence this review. What a shame how this once lovely place has gone downhill to the point where we won't be back.

There was no vegetarian choice on the menu (I should point out that by "choice" I mean I get to choose from a variety of options and by vegetarian I generally mean"not containing meat or fish but containing vegetables". They did however, have a meat-free carbohydrate option of tagliatele. It said that it came with capers. Do not rely on the capers - they were not there. the tagliatele was over-cooked. I do not have enough fingers to count the number of meals that I saw being sent back. I was hungry enough to eat it after the extensive wait and as I said, there was no alternative for a vegetarian. However, the service was very good, as was the coffee. We opted for draft and got given a list which included Peroni which we ordered a pint of. It turns out Peroni isn't on draft but got given two bottles and a pint glass regardless which cost £8. We had been treated to cream tea for two with Groupon vouchers, and used them today. We decided to sit in the Compass Lounge, which is decorated in a sort-of Art Deco style (or Art Deco as imagined by decorators perhaps in the 1980s.) The waitress was friendly and efficient and it wasn't long before our tea arrived - two large freshly baked scones each, with pots of clotted cream and strawberry jam. The tea was hot and strong and plentiful. I had to request napkins but she brought them promptly (I couldn't help but notice that on a nearby table recently vacated that the used napkins were starched damask ones, whereas ours were paper; this is no doubt a cost-saving for those using Groupon vouchers and one can hardly blame the hotel for such measures.)We really enjoyed our tea and not only would we recommend this to readers of Trip Advisor, but we hope to return for another cream tea. Indeed, the scones have now leapt to the top of our Scone Leader Board! Well done, kitchen bridgade at the Grand Hotel!

What a fantastic location ! Just about nice enough to sit outside. As a party of seven we ordered cream teas, drinks and cake. The waitress delivered tea for six by depositing everything at one end of the table. We distributed cups and teapots, on pouring drinks we found that the earl grey was loose leaf ... But there was no tea strainer. Another member of staff replaced the earl grey and provided a strainer. The one milk jug provided was insufficient for 6 pots of tea (+ replacement). On previous visits the scones had been a delight - freshly baked. On this occasion they had the texture of something frozen that had been revived - pretty poor.

My tuna was overcooked and another family member's fish and chips was undercooked. All the food was tepid. How can they mess up a sandwich? Stale bread and barely any filling. Dear me - we have never had these problems before apart from the slow service that is. They had run out of the bottle of white wine I ordered and the substituted white wine was warm. They made a complete mess of our bill, charging us for another family's meals. An ordered newspaper never arrived. We waited over half an hour for hot drinks after lunch. It turns out it was less formal but more expensive and with a much less interesting menu. We were the only customers and service was friendly but slow. My wife's food was OK but my sirloin steak was the toughest I have ever had - and at a cost of £28. They served it literally covered with the salad so I suspect they knew! That said, the puddings were fine and there was a lovely view of the sea. Had we read other reviews, we wouldn't have gone. Ten minutes later we were served two of the worst drinks ever. My glass was dirty and the drink very salty. My wife's drink was watery cranberry juice. On complaining, the waitress said sorry and then took my payment. £15.50.The bar/restaurant is best described as beige. It is one of the most joy-less places we have ever been in. Went for Valentine's dinner with my partner and another couple. The starter was seafood cocktail which sounded great.prawns, crab, mussels and lobster. The prawns were the tiny tasteless frozen ones from a shop. The crab had shell mixed in it the mussels were dried out and the lobster shell was filled with potato with a bit of crayfish on top. The main course was overcooked sole which fell to pieces and I jokingly said to the waiter I've ordered cheese for dessert, you can't mess that up but they did .They gave me the tiniest bit of Stilton I have ever seen which turned out to be mainly crusty rind. The other couple complained ,their meals were equally awful. The waitress knocked the wine over his wife's dress.the head waiter was extremely apologetic called the manager and the bill for the food which no one ate was reduced by half. I think this must have been sat around in the kitchen waiting to be served. I refused this dish and reordered fish with vegetables. Meanwhile, my husband had almost eaten his fish meal. My fish dish eventually arrived, but again was only just warm and appeared to have been just thrown onto the plate! We refused to pay for the food, but settled the bill for the drinks we had and left very disappointed. Booked with high hopes of this hotel in view of location & facilities. Meeting with family for lunch in the Compass Lounge/Restaurant on a Monday, so not anticipating it to be over busy. Lovely setting, comfortable environment. We had the 3 course reasonably priced Christmas menu. There was one other table occupied when we arrived but we still waited 40 minutes for our starters of soup & a cold dish, then a similar time for mains & then desert. A couple of guys walked out whilst we were there having had one soup delivered, whilst his friend's had still not arrived sometime after he had finished. The food was well presented but we had one small side dish of vegetables to share between 4 & no additional gravy. I had a pannacotta with mixed berry compote on the side. The chef couldn't have tasted them as they were very sour, heavy on the cinnamon & gritty with pips. Not nice. 2 others of our party had cheese & biscuits. The biscuits were obviously homemade, but were like soft cardboard grey & lacking taste like they'd been left out in a humid kitchen & lost their crispness. We queried this as the cheese was also dried up round the edges. The message from the kitchen was that the biscuits were home made & supposed to be somewhere between soft & crisp. A potentially great meal was spoilt by poor attention to detail. Service was great when the food was ready. A shame, as we are always looking for a good venue to meet with family for lunch & we will still be looking!

I had booked a table for afternoon tea for the Saturday just gone 3/4 weeks in advanced. I called the Compass lounge on Tuesday to ask if they did anything special for birthdays. I was greeted on the phone by a young man grunting 'ello?' and proceeding to sniff loudly down the phone at me. When I asked the question he told me he had no idea and would get someone to call me back. 3 hours passed with no phone call so I called again, I was then told a manager would call me back. Eventually that day I recieved a call back, to be told if I brought decorations in the staff would decorate the table. Around 4.30pm on the Friday I arrived at the Compass lounge bar, and waited around for 10 minutes while the staff stood around their newly carved pumpkins laughing and chatting. Eventually what looked like a manager came over to me and greeted me with a 'yes?' I then explained I had called earlier in the week and these were the decorations for my table on Saturday. He took the bag from me muttered that he'd sort it and went to walk away. I then called back to tell him my name and what time the table was booked, he repeated that he'd sort it and walked off. I didn't feel confident that this would be done so I got home I called and voiced my concerns. I spoke to Zoe on reception (who was very helpful) and she assured me she had spoken to the Compass staff and the table would be decorated. We arrived on Saturday a few minutes before our booking, and I couldnt see a decorated table in sight. We were then asked if we would wait at the bar for 5 minutes, to which I asked the waitress if it was because they hadn't decorated the table. She replied 'yes' with no apology or concern. I asked to immediately speak to the manager (Joanna) as I was really unhappy. The attitude of Joanna was absolute disgusting, she stood with her arms folded listening to my complaint, and then told me that she 'didnt like my tone,' I could not believe she wouldnt even comment on my complaint. The operations manager was then called who was no older than 20. I was very surprised that a 4 star hotel would hire two managers at such a young age and surely lacked the experience needed to successfully run a large 4* hotel?! His attitude was a little better but by this point I had already called Pier Point who had agreed to save our afternoon and lay on a great spread for us...AND put balloons etc on our table with only 20 minutes notice.I know this may seem like a petty complaint but they were unable to carry out a simple task that was requested several times and the attitude of the staff realy did ruin the experience, so much so that we will not be returning.

As we were going to see Black Coffee at the Princess Theatre we popped into the Compass Cafe Bar and were pleased to be offered a themed Agatha Christie menu.We had a starter and main course for £12.95 and it was very good and started off our theatre trip with a bit of fun.The starters of A Pocket Full of Rye/ Partners in Crime, were both tasty and served with fresh and warm bread. We both opted for Evil Under the Sun, for the main course and it was a delicious sun blushed tomato risotto. As we were in a sparkling mood we had a bottle of prosecco and some sparkling water.Great views and a friendly staff make this one of our favourite lunch venues in Torquay.

Our reservation was for 7pm sadly although there were several empty tables the waitress advised that we should wait in the bar area until a table was available. The bar was stacked high with glasses plates and cutlery, a complete shambles !We waited for half an hour when I enquired again to see if a table had become available I was told by the very same waitress that I needed to book ?I reminded her that she had directed our party of four to the bar area, she apologized for the confusion and offered up one of the many vacant tables. It went from bad to worse taking over an hour to be served our meal and what a awful display of culinary delight that turned out to be.The only positive from this experience was the view !

Good food good service good atmosphere and .not too expensive which we liked. No dislikes as the reason we go there is because it suits us and it's very comfortable. The tempura prawns were great and the soups are excellent. We have eaten there for both lunch or dinner and quality has to date always been great and of course the views are stunning

We were very embarrassed at the poor service and disorganisation of bar and waiting staff. we never did receive our drinks, and left after being informed there was no tuna for the nicoise salad. Poor for this calibre of Hotel.

Worst service ever. Pig ignorant man and the most awful passive aggressive woman I’ve ever met. That obsessed with how busy they might be that they forget the people paying their wages .
