Coffee Trader in Newcastle upon Tyne

Nice vibe in here, cosy sofas and the coffee is good compared to some other places--doesn't taste as "third wave" which I can't always get along with. I've been here myself and with other people over the years. The food is also pretty nice. I'm a little nonplussed as of late though, because they seem to start turfing out customers an entire half hour before closing, which I'm pretty sure is a little extreme compared to normal for a coffee shop even when taking closing into account. There were still a number of customers sat in who WERE having a relaxed time. I'm taking it slightly worse because I paid £3.75 for a coffee only to have a paper cup dumped in front of me and I was planning my time around opening hours--I'll just avoid this place when it gets later in the day because I've been caught out by timings a few times, which seem to be a little inconsistent depending on who's on the clock. Please, if you're eager to leave early then just change your times so that customers get to know and respect them. I know the service industry is hard, but customers need accurate information like this and maybe tone down the hostility. I wouldn't tell a paying audience over a microphone to leave just because I want to shave off some time and I don't normally expect that attitude at a coffee shop either, unless it really WAS closing at 6:30 and your opening hours are wrong on Maps. The sad thing is that I was having a nice online date with someone and that had to be cut short for the sake of five or ten minutes. I've been able to sit in Caffe Nero a little later, so I'll just go there when I need more time. Sorry guys.

Great spot for breakfast, coffee and cakes. Staff are super sweet and helpful and everything we had was delicious. Loads of space to sit, both tables with chairs and couches to chill on. Really nice!

I am on a budget and want to know prices before purchasing. Cold drinks need to be priced in cabinet or if not, then on a list. I do not wish to wait till I arrive at till to find out how much I owe.

We spotted this great coffee shop on our first day in Newcastle and decided that it would be perfect for getting breakfast the next day. It is tucked away down a side street but has quite a long footprint-really what caught our eye as we passed was that it shared an entrance with a tanning centre. There is Aldo outdoor seating at the front. There was so much choice when we went in for breakfast with a great range of hot drinks, pastries and all manner of sweet treats plus a very comprehensive menu. We opted for scrambled eggs, mine on gluten free bread. It was delicious! I would have loved to try one of the cakes and pastries but was too full… There was a lovely vibe in the coffee shop-all the staff were friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble. The clientele varied across the age groups and included family groups, young people working on laptops and lone diners. By the time we left there was quite a queue at the counter as it is obviously very popular. Will definitely visit again when we are next in Newcastle.

Great atmosphere, staff are lovely, food is fast and tasty and the drinks are my favourite. I've been coming here since I discovered it in 2005- 2006 and never stopped. (Should consider vegan options for further success) 🫶🙌❤️

As inside is busy and crowded all the time, I love enjoying my coffee outside. The staff is always nice there for you. Outside tables should be kept clean 😌

Came in to get a coffee as needed somewhere to chill with my dog as we had been out all day. Lovely staff made me very welcome brought water and a puppacino out for my dog. Lovely friendly staff great coffee great little place. Thanks for your great service 👍

This place is a cute independent coffee place. I found the coffee very milky and not really strong enough with a distinct flavour. I asked for syrup in my coffee and paid a hefty price and they forgot to add it. I took it back to ask and they just pumped syrup in it instead of remaking it. I asked for it to be not too hot but it was scolding unfortunately. I did have a slice of cake too which was nothing special. I did like the atmosphere but the coffee not being made quite right is not the best when it's a coffee shop !

Terrible. 17:15 Sunday 23rd July. Told I can't order a pot of tea at 17 15 "because the pot wash is turned off". Man with a ponytail working the front. Obviously wants an early finish. He can't simply leave it on the side and wash it in the morning. Quality service that. Not really.

I have been coming here for so long and loved the place. I came here today with my office friends. The place closes at 7 and we arrived here at 4pm and the staff said most of the space is closed as we have cleaned it already, gave only take away cups as they said we have cleaned already. I felt really awkward as I suggested the place to everyone and we didnt have any place to sit.

Bizarre service experience.. had been in a group of 10 at 4.30 they hardly managed to accommodate as they said have limited staff and near to closing time ( which was 7pm), empty tables were cleaned off so they cannot accommodate us there (wow!).. on top of that they said only take away cups is possible (pic) because again limited staff and closing time ( soon after 2.30h).. will never go again..

Lovely atmosphere, liked the seating plan and options for chairs or sofas. Not too loud so great place to catch up on work or with friends. Friendly and pleasant staff

Edit: went the other day after a good couple of months, new faces who I’ve never seen before. Not the most professional! Not sure where the usual faces were but the new ones were too busy chatting amongst themselves whilst some were waiting in line to be served! No smiles, no courteousness! and a lot of commotion common from the kitchen, could be heard from around the corner. Will try another day and hopefully the usual staff will be there. Been frequenting this place since my early teens and I am now in my early thirties! Has had various decor changes and staff changes over the years but all in all still feels like a proper coffee shop. Good selection of hot and cold drinks plus they do panini's and melts 😋

Have written five star reviews for Coffee Trader in the past. We used to visit when our son was at university here and it was fabulous. Excellent friendly service and delicious food. Unfortunately the waitress who served us today was less than enthusiastic, the food was mediocre at best and the table wasn't clean. Shall look elsewhere when next visiting Newcastle.

I loved this café. It is nice and big and airy downstairs. There is also outside seating. It is just off the main shopping street in Newcastle centre. I had a delicious orange hot chocolate and a chocolate shortbread traybake which was lovely. My daughter had a toasted sandwich which she said was excellent. I would certainly go again when I’m in Newcastle.

I love this place. Great coffee. Clean. Great staff. A nice place to meet friends, do remote working or just get away from the city hustle and bustle.

Visited here, with my son, for lunch. Been here many times and I have to say it's one of our favourite places for coffee/tea/lunch. Always a good selection of sandwiches etc, a good choice of hot drinks and plenty tables and seats on offer. Never have we not been able to find somewhere to sit. Love it!

The cafe has a variety of food and drinks and the vibe of the place is great! The hot chocolates are amazing and I was excited to see that they had some “school cake” too!

Only discovered this placed recently when I wanted to go somewhere different than my usual haunts. It's very spacious inside, with lots of comfy chairs and sofas to relax into with your beverage. Bonus: all the seating areas are well spaced out, so you don't feel like you're cramed in. Have to say, the flavoured coffee I had was AMAZING. There's a good selection of food and snacks available to make it a great spot for lunch too. All of which are reasonably priced.

A huge variety in both coffees and teas. You would find your loved one. With table service if requested.

Disgrace, I was waiting for my coffee 40 min I asked 4 times, ignored avery time

Owners must be covidiots level hard. Used to be my fav coffee place but now it feels like waiting on funeral in church lobby. 6 months after “freedom day” and they still have table service, wooden utensils and americano in paper cups lol avoid at all costs.

I came here recently with some work colleagues. It's a nice place tucked away down a little side street. The service was fine and the guy who came to take our orders was very pleasant. Coffee is good, friendly atmosphere; overall nothing to complain about, except.... It costs 50p extra for the plant-milks. I hate when places charge extra for alternative milks. Whether it be through an allergy or for personal choice there should be at least one free alternative milk available, especially nowadays when it can be bought so cheap and so many people drink it. Knock this extra charge off and I'd give 5 stars!

Cheap and cheerful little coffee spot with friendly staff and decent heated outdoor seating .food is a little inconsistent at times but the coffee is good .

This place used to be great but since covid it has gone downhill. Service was not very good, it took a while to get orders placed and people who came in after us got their orders placed before we did (I don't know why they have their strange queuing system in place as it means more face to face contact with staff if you sit in which is not great for them or for customers during covid). Loads of staff on shift but they were clearly confused as to what they should be doing as several of them were milling around while orders were waiting behind the bar to be taken to tables. Menu does not have much for vegetarians. Coffee was not great quality. Food was OK, but pricey for what you get.

I would literally give this place 0 stars if I could! I saw that they did pumpkin spice lattes online yesterday and they looked amazing so I though I’d pop in and try one and get some pics of it to put on Instagram. When I got there though the woman behind the till reluctantly took my order she couldn’t have been less enthusiastic if she tried to be fair! and I went and sat down she brought me the drink and says “oh we don’t have any cream by the way” like why didn’t she tell me not all the ingredients to make it were available before I ordered it and wasted my time? obviously I didn’t want it because it wasn’t as advertised at all and looked awful actually. So I got a refund which apparently doesn’t clear for 5 working days so now I’m out of pocket and couldn’t afford another coffee from anywhere else! yeah thanks for that! quick to take my money but slow to give it back eh? the customer service is an absolutely joke! I’m aware that’s it’s only a drink but I have an eating disorder and I would at least like the only thing I plan on consuming all day to be actually made right and without an extra serving of rude, filthy dirty looks of the staff thank you very much!

Good place to chill, drink some coffee or eat and even work. Fair prices. Will definitely come back.

Reasonable prices. 🌟 A spacious café with many seats available inside and outside. 🌟 Also serves breakfast and lunch menus ... Sandwiches, pancakes, fries, etc taste good. Food service is a bit slow though. 🌟 Peaceful environment even it is near a very busy street (Northumbria Street). Always enjoy sitting outside and see the surroundings. 🌟 Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent service.

This coffee shop has gone downhill. Today it was half empty mid morning. I stood watching staff at the till chatting for a few minutes before one came to open the barrier and told me she would take my order once I’d chosen a seat. I then waited for fifteen minutes while the same two staff chatted at the till, then one served another table (fair enough, they were there first). Two members of staff were sitting at the next table, one told the waitress to serve me but she walked off. I then decided to leave.

Coffee cold. Staff on another world. Atmosphere dry! Wouldn't recommend!

Nice coffee...but sometimes run out of food items!

Coffee is ok, little acidic for my taste but the prices are fair. Staff are nice though when we asked for a Tiffin we got a white chocolate shortbread, we couldn't be bothered to argue because it took a lil bit to be served and get drinks etc. Covid restrictions are great though, felt very safe.
