Great to be inside a pub again! My wife and I had an early lunch. Steak and ale pie for me and sea bass for her. Both dishes were amazing! Really attentive staff, especially Tracey and Sarah. So friendly. Well done Pete and Dawn. Good to be back!

My son booked a table for tonight, we had been on a Friday night for the past two weeks and had a really good experience.Unfortunately that ended tonight as we were turned away by a very abrupt young man who didn’t apologise or seem to care even after showing proof that we had called the day before ! As no confirmation is given when you book you rely totally on staff doing their part which didn’t happen on this occasion. Our family won’t be back any time soon....Colin

THEY ACCEPT AMEX! Booking by telephone was a pleasure and nicely handled. On arrival entrance was by the rear gate, signed in, gelled hands and led to nicely spaced table seating in the garden rear or the main pub. We were served by very pleasant staff, efficiently and politely. The food was well prepared; I had freshly caught fish with mushy peas and chips, my partner had steak and ale pie with chips. The fish was delicious but the mushy peas were very artificial green and tasteless. The pie crust had become sodden with gravy so very gooey. Chips for both of us were soft and lacked crispiness outside. On the whole a good pub grub with no pretentions. Wine by the glass was overpriced and not very nice - stick to beer here.

Awesome treat. Well what can I say. Again another delicious roast dinner for 2, delivered on time by the most charming lady whom we know from working there. Piping hot, full of flavour and no less than 5 freshly cooked vegetables accompanied by crispy roast potatoes, parsnips, homemade stuffing , pigs in blankets & lashings of wonderful homemade gravy. Then to top it all off just the best apple crumble and custard. A total feast. We are so lucky to have this little pub in Emsworth and must support and ensure it’s wellbeing and the staff who are just delightful to ensure it stays open Thank you Pete, Dawn and crew from the coalie xxx

The staff all wearing facial safety masks took our order, the food arrived swiftly piping hot and all homemade. Spent a couple of hours at the coal exchange, regrettably! We were seated at a table outside that was on a slant. Therefore one of our drinks fell over and covered one of us. It took three members of staff to give us an answer when requesting a refill. The staff member was rude and didn't offer a refill whilst we had to wait an hour for our food in soaked and sticky trousers.

I don't normally review pubs in my local town, but as a result of the pandemic infection rate seems to be on the down, I decided to pop past the Coal Exchange today.Prior to the pandemic I would use the Coal Exchange at least once a week, primarily before I picked up my Saturday night take away.Today I walked past the Coal Exchange with my brothers, and we saw a "we are open sign" in front of the pub. We walked around the back, as instructed by the sign, and then waited to be seated, as instructed by a further sign. Subsequent to this, a member of staff approached us and asked us to follow her out. She then proceeded to say "I just want to show you something guys" and pointed to a washed out 'Regular's only' sign on the back gate. We weren't too worried by this, and proceed to leave, but then the member of staff followed this up with 'I am happy to let you in, but should there be any trouble I will be grabbing you by the neck and throwing you out myself". The whole attitude and demeanour was intimidating, bordering on aggressive. There was no action from ourselves to warrant this. Naturally, we declined the offer to purchase a drink subsequent to this comment.I just wanted to feedback that, though I may not have been recognized, I had always considered myself a 'regular' of the Coal Exchange, having attended at least 1 to 2 times a week.Unfortunately, this has left a bitter taste in my mouth, which sadly was not the London Pride which I fancied.I will not be using the pub again due to this personal experience. There is a large selection within the town. All the best for the future.

We dropped by on our way home from work one evening. As we arrived about 10.30pm the live music was just ending but the pub was very busy and there was a lovely log fire burning.. Quaint place with more than one bar area and full of local people

Great choices on the menu and very well kept beer. Good banter and light hearted atmosphere. Owners do a lot to support local charities. We are moving to this area and this pub will do just fine every time we go into Emsworth.

Met up with some friends who live locally. No food on a Saturday night which creates a great atmosphere for a few beers. Packed at 7pm nice beer garden and people spilling out onto the street no doubt helped by the summer weather.

First pub we visited when we discovered Emsworth and having moved here 5 years ago it is still one of our favourite pubs. A real community pub, that is welcoming to new comers, always chatty people, really friendly atmosphere. Great variety of food and events throughout the year

In its heyday Emsworth boasted a pub to population ratio of 1 pub per thousand or so. Those days are long gone with names like The Seagull, The Black Dog, and The Town Brewery shuttered or built over by dodgy developers. Standing strong against this entropy is The Coal Exchange (the Coal Hole). Good honest home cooked pub grub, charming and lively staff, and that Prince of Beers HSB (Horden Special Bitter from its pre-Fullers Gales Ales era). Folks, do your bit in resisting the chain brand narcolepsy that is slowly eating away at English pub culture and support a family run tied house local. You won't be disappointed

We visited as a group for lunch and sat outside. The Pub is a little grubby and tired looking, the staff were pleasant enough but the food was pretty low quality. It seemed like the fish (cod and chips) had been cooked from frozen, the batter was soggy, the fish was sloppy and a little tasteless, chips were just average from frozen and well, peas are just plain peas. There is really nothing special about this place, although some of the locals seemed quite happy sitting at the bar..

We ventured into the Coal Exchange on the last evening of our visit to Emsworth and we're really glad we did. There is a large choice of traditional pub food available. An easy choice - a home made steak and ale pie, even better there was none of that "puff pastry top only" - this was a real pie with a pastry top and bottom and succulent filling with rich gravy. Service was great, Josh was excellent and with the staff behind the bar provided great hospitality. Excellent local pub, just how one should be.

A lovely pub, very friendly staff, food was wonderful and prices were very reasonably priced, my only disappointment was the lady working in the kitchen, tall slim lady in dark clothes, her hair was hanging all over the place, she bought out an elderly gentleman’s food and her hair was touching the food, he did not see this, if it had been mine I would of refused to eat it, Kitchen staff should have hair tied back

A big shout out to the Coal Exchange who went out of their way yesterday to modify a dish from their menu to support my wife who is on a very limited medically-required diet. They could not have been more accommodating and it meant we were able to enjoy lunch out together for the first time in months! And excellent well-cooked fresh food as always! Many thanks!

We were in Emsworth and came across this pub by chance - well it is right next door to the car park. It is quite small but the staff were great and the food really good. My crab salad was to die for

Bit of a local pub really didn't try the food as the kitchen was shut, a range of different beers on sale which were well kept but a bit of a grubby garden out the back.

Visited yesterday for Ann impromptu spot of lunch with my parents. Initially, from the front door, it looked very busy but as we walked away we noticed a back garden sign and decided to take a look. Well we were presently surprised tyo discover a reasonably nice sized garden which gave us easier access and after sitting in the garden for a while, Also managing to grab a table by the back door. Food was good. I had scampi and dad had the cod. Both fresh and nice size. Scampi was also wholetail, very nice. My mum however opted for a crab sandwich which unfortunately was a very lacking in filling. So just looked like a couple of thin white slices of bread! Bless her. She's not a fan of salad either, which is a shame, as it did come with a nice side salad & coleslaw. I gave her some of my scampi & a couple of chips. Overall impressed with the cooked food and the place was busy. So that's a good sign! Toilets could do with a revamp mind. Grubby and tired & Toilets are set on a high on a raised step, so tricky for us short people! Ha ha. We left through the rear entrance & noticed that there is a good part sheltered, seated, smoking area, for those who smoke. Can imagine the garden would be nice in the summer.
